T430 brightness control question....

It seems that no matter what Power Plan I choose.... the screen brightness goes to a very dim level while in battery mode. Even after a "Custom" plan, it forgets the desired brightness level after a re-boot.
Any advice would be appriciated....  Thank you
The BIOS and all the drivers are up to date....

  • Windows 8.1 kills screen brightness control

    I have a touch smart 23 computer that came with windows 8.0. An auto upgrade to 8.1 caused the screen brightness control to stop working and the screen stays on super bright. I could not get a response on how to fix so I had to re-install 8.0 which fixed the problem. I set the system to not upgrade without my approval and yet it did it again last week (about 4 or 5 months later). When I have to reinstall 8.0, I have to re-install several primary programs as there are no restore points left except back to factory settings. Question one is - has there been a fix installed on windows 8.1 that will again let me control the brightness on my screen? If not, question 2 is how did the update override my setting to not allow updates to install without my approval. I have a full day of re-installs that I don't want to have to do a third time.

    Hi:
    You probably have to install the W8.1 graphics driver for your specific model.
    Normally when you can't control the screen brightness, that means the graphics driver isn't installed.
    As for your second question, that I do not know.

  • Failure of Shades, DarkAdapted and Brightness Control

    My iMac display is too bright even at it's lowest setting.
    A new profile in Display Preferences can't deal with this and the contrast control in Universal Access also doesn't help.
    I've tried 3rd party software. Brightness Control continually loses it's setting when the screensaver starts. Shades doesn't work for me because it leaves the pointer undimmed and that small too bright area is right where I need to look. And DarkAdapted is limited by the same screensaver problem as Brightness Control.
    I sure wish Apple displays could dim adequately as in the past.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

    I have DarkAdapted Pro, with registered version, it load your profile at mac os login, and darkadapted its a real bright control, not like brightcontrol (deform colours)...
    One question, do you have bright gradient left to right on your mac 24 alu?.. more bright at left side of your monitor, to view this, move one window at the left, and then move it at the right, if you see one variation of white values then the gradient is there!... ok it is my problem and a lot of people are at the same situation like me... not sure if it is a general problem...
    Ok see you bye!

  • Missing brightness controls in Tiger – Genius required please!

    I notice there are already several threads relating to the loss of brightness controls when upgrading from Panther to Tiger. This has now happened to one of my iBooks and I have spent the day trying to find a solution to the problem. So far I have not succeeded but I do have a few more clues and I’m hoping that some genius out there might be able to chip in and present a solution.
    The brightness controls work perfectly in Panther but upgrading to Tiger causes them to stop working. (I have tested this in 10.4, 10.4.3, 10.4.6 and 10.4.9)
    The problem is not resolved by any kind of reset – PRAM, PMU, NVRAM etc.
    In the folder System/Library/Displays there is a folder called Overrides. This folder has significantly more contents in Tiger than in Panther so I tried replacing the Tiger version with the Panther one – still no change.
    In the extensions folder I tried replacing Tiger’s AppleOnboardDisplay.kext with the earlier Panther version – still no change.
    I am at about the limit of my current software expertise here but it seems that Tiger is for some reason deciding that the display is not what it wants it to be and so limits controllability.
    There must be someone out there who knows how to take this to the next level? You would certainly make a lot of G4 iBook users very happy if you could solve this issue or even provide another clue so, go on, give those brain cells a workout and win the praise of all those not-so-bright (no pun intended) iBook owners out there.
    Thanks in anticipation.
    David
    14" iBook G4 1.33GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Mactuition!
    I don't know if this will help you or someone else addressing your question, but I also have the 1.33 GHz iBook G4 running the current version of Tiger (I purchased mine in 2006 with Tiger installed) and have never had an issue with the brightness controlls.
    This leads me to a few possibilities...
    1) Is it possible that there was a firmware update or new graphics driver between your iBook and mine?
    2) Did you perform a clean install when upgrading to Tiger? Could something else be causing a conflict?
    3) Could there be a physical malfunction or defect?
    I'll take a look at some things and let you know if I come up with anything. Good luck.

  • Brightness control at startup with systemd

    I finally upgraded to systemd (I know... a bit later than I should have), and the transistion has been smooth, except for enabling brightness controll at boot.
    I currently have a bit of a hack working to enable brightness control on my Dell XPS 13 ultrabook. I have two backlight interfaces (/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight and /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0), and I have found that the only way to alter my screen brightness is to set the intel_backlight brightness value to 0 and then alter the brightness file under the acpi_video0 interface. I must always write the 0 to the intel_backlight/brightness file, even if it already contains 0, to enable brightness control through acpi_video0.
    I had had this code in my rc.local previously, and it worked exactly as I needed to enable brightness control:
    #!/bin/bash
    # set intel interface to 0, allowing acpi interface to take precedence
    echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    # set the permissions of the acpi brightness file for video group (me) regular user modification
    chgrp video /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    chmod 664 /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    # initialize brightness to a low level
    echo 3 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    exit 0
    Currently when I run this script normally it grants me the brightness control I desire through the modification of /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness. I have made this script into a systemd service initiated at startup, with the service file below:
    [Unit]
    Description=Brightness Control Initialization
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/scripts/bright_init
    RemainAfterExit=yes
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    My issue is that although the service is initiated at startup without error, my brightness control does not function like it does when I run the script manually myself. I have verified that systemd considers the service to have run successfully after startup, and I have also enabled both the multi-user.target and above service.
    My questions are twofold:
    1. Is there a better way to allow brightness control other than the somewhat hacky method of zeroing the /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness file with the above script?
    2. And does anyone have an idea as to why my service doesn't work, even though I can run the script after startup and it functions as I desire?

    It is interesting to see that this is working for you. I had to add OWNER="root" to the rule. Otherwise when testing the rule with `udevadm test` I always recieved a permission denied error. But even with OWNER="root" Udev did not actually write the ATTR{brightness}="2" into the file.
    Manually doing that by echo 2 > ... works well. I searched a bit on this topic and found a thread on the Gentoo forum where they say that it is not wise to use Udev for writing anything to /sys. Instead you should use Udev to run a script that does that:
    [orschiro@thinkpad ~]$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/50-powersave.rules
    SUBSYSTEM=="power_supply", ENV{POWER_SUPPLY_ONLINE}=="0", RUN+="/home/orschiro/Scripts/powersaving battery"
    SUBSYSTEM=="power_supply", ENV{POWER_SUPPLY_ONLINE}=="1", RUN+="/home/orschiro/Scripts/powersaving AC"
    [orschiro@thinkpad ~]$ cat /usr/local/bin/powersaving
    #!/bin/sh
    case $1 in
    battery)
    echo "Running powersaving on AC in 3 seconds"
    sleep 3
    # screen power saving"
    echo 200000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
    AC)
    echo "Running powersaving on battery in 3 seconds"
    sleep 3
    # screen power saving
    echo 4270725 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

  • No TrackPoint Scroll and Brightness Control After Resume

    Hello All,
    I'm having an issue with my new x120e where after a couple suspend/resume cycles both the Trackpoint scroll function and the ability to adjust screen brightness no longer work. Using the Trackpoint only yields results as a pointing device, and trying to use the brightness controls does nothing--no on-screen brightness level display. I've searched the forums but couldn't find these exact issues, and I'm using the latest versions of the UltraNav driver and Utility.
    Thanks!

    hey cbolos,
    check via http://support.lenovo.com and see that your Power Management software is at its latest version. If not, download and install.
    if it is the latest, uninstall all UltraNav drivers+Utilities and the Power Management.
    let window install its generic drivers. Test and see if it happens again

  • HP Pavilion 17" AMDA10 F2 F3 brightness control not working after win10 install

    After installing windows 10 my brightness controls F2,F3 stopped working. I found this out because after the install my laptops display was super bright and i tried to tone it down using the function keys.I did download the AMD catalyst control and can turn it down there, but my function keys for it are not working, is there a planned update to fix this issue? Thanks

    Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. Have you tried in the Device Manager to update the driver that is currently installed? In the device manager try selecting find new hardware.  At this time, I have a document to assist with Using the Function Keys. You can uninstall your keyboard driver, restart your Notebook, then reinstall the drivers. The HP Support Assistant can help you. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating for Windows 10. Here is troubleshooting when drivers are not available yet. Updated Windows 10 drivers will become available on the HP Drivers and Downloads Page for your product. They will be released as they become available to HP. Have a great day!

  • Volume and Brightness controls

    So I was installing Lenovo Drivers on my laptop after I nuked the hard drive and to repartition. However, somehow, I have TWO volume and brightness controls. Any ideas anyone?

    Hi ychen428,
    I saw your other post over here .  Is your audio working properly now with the exception of having two volume controls?
    Seeing as how the hotkeys are incorporated into Energy Management, could it be that there are two versions of Energy Management installed?  The on screen displays look like an older version and a new version.

  • [SOLVED] Thinkpad T430 brightness keys broken after firmware upgrade

    Hi.
    I've upgraded the firmware on my Thinkpad to version 2.51. Since that I'm unable to change the display brightness via the Fn-Keys on the keyboard. What still works is writing values to /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness but of course that's not how it should be.
    Here's some dmesg output:
    [    7.638814] thinkpad_acpi: ThinkPad ACPI Extras v0.24
    [    7.638816] thinkpad_acpi: http://ibm-acpi.sf.net/

    Any idea why it's broken and how it can be fixed?
    Thanks,

    Awesome, the acpi_backlight=vendor kernel command line parameter actually fixed it.
    Does anybody know what exactly has changed and why this in necessary now?
    Update: If you do this, you'll get error messages like this in your log/dmesg every time you press a brightness key:
    kernel: thinkpad_acpi: unknown possible thermal alarm or keyboard event received
    kernel: thinkpad_acpi: unhandled HKEY event 0x6050
    kernel: thinkpad_acpi: please report the conditions when this event happened to [email protected]
    The kernel command line parameter acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" also works and seems to be the better way to fix this.
    Bugreport at kernel.org: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51231
    tl;dr: Firmware update introduced 101 brightness levels even though the hardware only supports 16 but Windows 8 requires this. Reducing or increasing the brightness by one doesn't change anything at all so the firmware will still report the old value as the new brightness thus it'll never actually change the brightness. But if you explicitly tell the firmware that you're not Windows 8, it will only report 16 brightness levels and everything works fine. Lenovo, seriously?

  • Dual 20" Apple Cinema Displays brightness control

    Hello all,
    Finally added a 2nd 20" Cinema Display to my setup. When I first got the new display hooked up (used from eBay, but in great condition) I noticed that it was pretty dark so I went to adjust the brightness... but the buttons on the side of the display didn't work and there was no brightness slider on the preferences pane for that display. The primary display DID have the brightness control.
    Does anyone know what might be causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I've been trying to figure out why I couldn't change the brightness on the 20" cinema display connected to my MacBook Pro and now I know the reason. Thanks for this question and answer.
    Shouldn't such a simple and necessary thing be made clear in the MacBook Pro manual?

  • My screen gets dim and the brightness control buttons don't work

    My screen is frequently dim.  The brightness control buttons display that they are working, but the brightness doesn't actually change.  Any ideas why and what I can do?

    Thanks for the suggestion.  Actually, I had tried that but still had to go into preferences any time I wanted it brighter.  After I posted, I found a thread using some different keywords and found that people were having the same problem with OS versions up to 10.7.2 but solved it with the latest update (10.7.3).  I just installed it and now seem to be able to adjust the brightness with my keyboard no problem.  I appreciate your reply anyway!

    Hello smarisig. I understand you are not able to control screen brightness from the keyboard on Windows 8. By chance, did you upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7? I have located an online forum that contains troubleshooting on this issue: http://thedailybuggle.com/forum/unable-control-screen-brightness-windows-8-a-200.html
    The person who posted the issue on this forum had upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and then this issue occurred. That is the reason I asked if this Windows 8 was upgraded. Regardless, follow the troubleshooting presented and it could resolve the issue for you. If not, let me know and I will continue to research the issue in the meantime. I'm only here to help!

    Hello,
    The backlight detection depends from acpi options selection on your kernel. Which kernel version do you use ?
    $ uname -a
    (Use at least a 2.6.36 kernel since a lot of improvement for recent Toshiba laptop have been done during summer 2010)
    This done, ACPI options beeing compiled into kernel or loaded as module, this line should appear in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log :
    "found backlight control interface /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0"
    Having a C650-15Z, my brightness control works well.
    regards,

  • Windows 8.1 update and brightness control

    I have a DELL XPS L521X with Windows 8.1 (I had windows 8 some days ago) and I have had two problems:
    1) I did not allow Windows to upgrade to 8.1 and it forced me to do it. It gave me 15 minutes to save progress and do it. I was watching the NBA finals on my computer and it was the only thing I had to watch the game. The installation lasted the whole second
    half the game and I WAS NOT ABLE TO WATCH IT DUE TO THIS, YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW I AM FEELING ABOUT NOT USING WINDOWS EVER AGAIN... How can I prevent it from ever upgrading anything without my consent? I had already turned off updates from Control Panel\System
    and Security\Windows Update but it didn't help.
    2) My brightness control became broken after the 8.1 update. I had to manually pick the older Intel HD 4000 driver to have it working again or else my eyes would stop functioning after such a bright display. I had to switch to the 9.17 driver version from
    September 2012. Where can I get the lastest WORKING version of the driver?
    Please stop making me loose days fixing Windows issues...

    Hi,
    We have set the GP to disable Windows 8.1 update in Windows store, you can check it here:

    http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-update-to-windows-8-1-for-free-notification-in-windows-8-store/
    For your second issue, it's not only related to Windows, but also the driver provider. Microsoft is working together with the device manufacturers and partners to deliver update package and try the best to solve the compatible issue and bring a great improvement
    on user experience. But you know, it will take some time.

  • Brightness control not working in Windows 8 x64 after sleep with Boot Camp 5.0.2

    Hi,
    I am using Boot Camp 5.0.2 with Windows 8 x64.
    Wheen the computer has been in sleep mode, and wakes up again, the brightness control won't work as expected.
    Usually the screen is to dark (darker than before, what it should be), and after some time pops up brighter as it should be.
    Has onyone else seen this issue?
    I mean, it seems that for brightness we use the internal control GUI of Windows 8, and not the Apple one that is used in Windows 7 and in Windows 8 for the sound control.
    Macbook Pro 13" Retina, early 2013 (brand new) with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD and 3.0GHz i7.

    I have been having the issue of no brighness control when running windows through bootcamp for about 6 months now and have not found any applicable solution online.
    While messing around trying to figure it out yet again I noticed that my monitor driver was signed by team viewer...
    Sure enough clicking the roll driver back button resolved the issue by rolling the driver back to the Microsoft driver...
    So long story short:
    Right click "My Computer" click properties
    Click device manager (lop left of window)
    Expand Monitors section
    Double Click monitor
    Click driver tab
    If the driver here is not signed by Microsot or Apple click the roll back button. My driver version is 6.1.7600.16385 (Driver date 6/21/2006)
    Rolling this back instantly resolved my issue. I will now propagate this post to all the threads I saw regarding this issue.
    I am running windows 7 x64 Ulti on a 15" rMBP.
    Best of luck
