T430 CPU speed question

Hi,
I recently bought a T430 advertised as having this cpu:
Intel Core i7-3520M Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.60 GHz)
However in my control panel the i7 cpu shows up as 2.90 GHz. Can anyone please tell me if there is some option to increase the speed in the BIOS or similar? Many thanks.
Michael.

The CPU can dynamically change speed in order to conserve power. If you have a CPU speed monitor you can see these transitions routinely. Here are some samples showing my T430s (i5-3320M up to 2.60GHz) taken about a minute apart:

  • Question CPU speed VS RAM speed

I am tweaking my new worstation.
    I have an Asus p6t ws professional. I7 960
24 G DDR3 tripple channel ram (Patriot Level 7 Viper II)
I am new to overclocking and I up to now I don't know how to solve this propblem.
If I overclock the CPU by putting the BCLK frenquency to 160, with default multiplier at 25, I clock 4.07
But, when I check the speed of my RAM with CPU-Z, I get a clock of 490 (!!!) so time two 980 (not even the 533 x2 to 1066)
If I put my bios to XMP mode I get my ram to 1600, but my cpu is about 3.4 (close to normal 3.2)
    How can I OC to 4.0 with 24 G RAM at 1600?
The mother board manual say it acccept 1600 RAM but (OC) And THEY SAY THAT iNTEL SPECIFICATION, IN xmp mode, DDR3-1600 are supported for one DIMM per channel only (does that mean I cn only put 16 gig in channel A,B and C If I want 1600 OR 24G butr at a lower clock around 1066?
IF I am stucked in making choices and can't have it all (CPU 4.0 and 24D RAM-1600), WICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT: CPU SPEED OR RAM SPEED?
I mostly edit P2 and wil be editing red and filmstock transfered.

Using a Gigabyte MB and cooling with water my i7-950 is rock stable at 4.3 with 24GB of 1600 G Skill RAM running at 1624; I have CPU turbo disabled and RAM XMP enabled and running at 1.5 volts.
Based on my clocks (BCLK 203, CPU 21, turbo off, QPI 36, MEM 8, and Uncore 16), I would suggest trying the following to reach 4.0 with your 1600 rated RAM:
    BCLK 190
    CPU 21
    turbo off
    QPI 36
    MEM 8
    Uncore 16
If that is not stable for your Asus, Try lowering BCLK until go get something that is. These settings would put your RAM at 1520 which would certainly be close to their maximum potential.
OC'ing can be time consuming; if this "formula" does not work for your system, then you really do need to go with the tried and true methodical approach.
Regarding which is more important for PPro I would say CPU speed is much more significant than RAM speed based on runs that  making with Harm and Bill's ever so useful PPBM5 benchmark along my journey.
On another note, Cristobal on this forum informed me about "INTELBURN TEST" (Google it), which was a more rigerous torture test for stability than the ones that most people use (memtest, 3DMark, wPrime, etc.).
Good luck and do report back what works best for you in the end; it would be nice to report how your drives are set up too along with your PPBM5 results as well.

  • How to get statistics (or precise data) about cpu speed and RAM

My problem is I want to determine the CPU speed of the computer is running the applet.
I know there's no way to obtain in a simply (and standar) way this property, so I've thinked about generating statistic methods for do it (something like executing a loop a defined iterations)
My doubt is what to put inside this loop, beacuse I would like to know just not CPU speed (or satistics about it), I need also free RAM statistics, so I've thinked there would be some specific java instructions to give a relationship of these data I need.
My question is if someone has done (or has thinked about) this kind of classes before me, and can tell me what is the best way to make the same.

  • T430 cpu i7-3520 multiplier stuck at 12

    Hello.
    Symptoms of problem:
Model # T430 with Intel i7-3520m processor with 8 GB RAM running windows7 64 bit ultimate.
    Slow performance.
Low windows experience index for CPU 4.8 versus expected ~7.2 for i7-3520m CPU (2.9 GHz)
    Observations of Problem:
CPU-Z monitor and AIDA64 showed the CPU multiplier constantly stuck at 12 which translates to 1.2 Ghz CPU speed.
    Steps to resolution:
Ran all Lenovo diagnostics via F10 at boot – all passed
Ran all Intel CPU diagnostics (Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool) – all passed
Changed setting in bios for CPU speed step and power management – no change
Changed all windows power management settings to every combination – no change
Upgraded chipset drivers – no change
Upgrade Video drivers – no change
Complete reinstall of Windows 7 – no change
Upgrade BIOS – unable to upgrade, updater refuse processing update without battery, which is unavailable now. Anyway there is no fixes for such problem in BIOS fixes list.
    Any suggestions, gentlemen?

65W without a battery is not sufficient to drive the hardware at full speed, so it caps your CPU.
    You'll need a 90W or potentially even a 135W adapter. Or a battery.
You could use ThrottleStop to force the multiplier, but you'd risk system instability or damaging your power supply.

  • RAM vs. CPU speed

Hi..sorry for the uneducated question, but I'm wondering what the difference in performance is between having a fast CPU or more RAM. Where do each differ? For example, if I want to have less of the spinning beach ball..would installing more RAM help this? If so, what does the CPU speed effect? I appreciate any insight.
The reason I ask is that my MBP has 2.2Ghz but my wife's new MacBook is 2.4. So technically..is her computer 'faster' than mine? If I put in 4GB RAM..for example...how would that effect our comparison? (not that we're having a contest..I'm just wanting to know). Thanks!

The simple answer is that a faster CPU = apps running faster, and more RAM = more apps running simultaneously.
So, for example, when encoding a video in iDVD, your wife's MBP would do that slightly faster than yours (maybe a few minutes difference in a two hour process). More RAM wouldn't help that. But, if you went up to 4 GB of RAM, you could have more apps open at once without the spinning beachball, or having to wait while information is written to/read from the hard disk (virtual memory).
    Hope this helps...

  • How to check CPU speed, remove or install softwares? I'm a newbi

    Hi all,
I just purchased my MBP yesterday. I'm totally new to this machine. I don't know how to see CPU speed, RAM, or other hardwares on this computer. Also, I don't know if the apple button use for what? I press "apple" and nothing happens. Last, could someone tell me how to optimize the computer? I had 80GB but now I have only 57GB availble. I don't know why this MBP uses so much space.
Thanks again for all your help. I will have more questions for you
P/S: I couldn't find these info by search.

Hi y - Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Hi all,
I just purchased my MBP yesterday. I'm totally new to
this machine. I don't know how to see CPU speed, RAM,
or other hardwares on this computer.
click on the blue apple in the upper left corner of your display (a drop menu will open) then click on About This Mac.
a window pops up. some basic system info is shown there.
for all the add'l details, click on More Info...
that will open up the System Profiler which lists everything hardware- and software-wise...
the System Profiler is also sitting in Applications > Utilities, and you can also start it by double-clicking on its icon there..
    Also, I don't
know if the apple button use for what? I press
    "apple" and nothing happens.
the apple button on the keyboard is a "command key".
i.e. most applications will quit if you enter the key combination apple+Q.
save is apple+S, and so on.
    Last, could someone tell
me how to optimize the computer? I had 80GB but now I
have only 57GB availble. I don't know why this MBP
    uses so much space.
fairly typical. the default installation process writes language
localizations, many many printer drivers, and other things
you may not need. you can use the application monolingual
to remove language localizations that you don't want (download
it from versiontracker). printer drivers are generally smaller,
but some like keeping that to a minimum...
also if iLife is installed including GarageBand - there might be some GB of
'garageband loops' you might not need.
so, all in all, how much you might be able to clean up depends on how
you want to use your machine... post back w/ any details if you like...
Thanks again for all your help. I will have more
    questions for you
P/S: I couldn't find these info by search.
    enjoy your new machine!!! cheers

  • Newbie: My CPU speed is wrong!

I have a KT3 Ulta-ARU motherboard and an Athlon 1400Mhz CPU with a 266MHz FSB.  My diagnostics tools tell me my CPU is running at 1GHz though.
I can't get FuzzyLogic or the other MSI tools to work on my computer any more as they inevitably seem to just stop working and I can't uninstall them either.  So how in the BIOS do I fix my CPU speed?
I know this is a dumb question but I just can't figure it out after reading the manual or searching around the site.
    Thanks!

No I typically have trouble with the MSI tools.  I do a clean install of WinXP Pro, and install the tools from the CD.  Then I run LiveUpdate, and invariably one tool conflicts with another, or it tries to update one but can't uninstall it, or both.  So I've just given up.  My computer is due for an OS reinstall soon anyways.
I just got an MSI GeForce4 TI 4200 video card a week ago too so I would like to have the MSI tools working!

  • G505s slow CPU speed whilst charging.

This is terrible, by using CPUz i can see that, whilst the laptop is charging, the clock speed drops down to 900mhz and fluctautes between that and 1400mhz, this is shocking, i can hardly watch youtube videos or even post this thread, the lag and slowness is unbearable. When running on battery power the CPU speed shoots up to 2500mhz and stays there,it never seems to go to its turbo speed either. Please lenovo fix this problem as soon as you can, whilst charging, the laptop is unusabe, i cannot do anything on it.
    FIX THIS PLEASE!

  • Program taking up all of CPU Speed

    Hello,
I have been lucky not to have to use the forum, until now. I recently installed a program called Garage Sale. I decided not to use it and deleted it (drug it over to trash from the finder window). Well,(now at least a week later) I turned on my computer this morning and it was running really really slow. I was finally able to get into the activity monitor and was able to find the problem. A piece of Garage Sale was still running (Garagesalehelper) and it was taking up to 65 - 80% of my CPU Speed. How to do I get rid of this thing? Thanks for any and all help.
    Imac G5 Isight 512MB 180GB HD 10.4.9   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, JoeCat24
To stop the offending process immediately, you can highlight "Garagesalehelper" in the main Activity Monitor window and then click the red "Stop Process" button. However, this fix is only effective until you restart your Mac or the application.
To get permanent relief, you must properly uninstall Garage Sale.. I do not use Garage Sale, so I cannot give you specific, step-by-step instructions. You will need to find the proper uninstall instructions. Some applications come with an uninstaller. Others list all the files that must be removed along with their locations
If you still have the Garage Sale installer or Readme files, check there to see how to properly uninstall. If you do not have this information, you may need to download the installer again to see if uninstall instructions are available there. Sometimes it is simpler to reinstall the application and then use the Help files to find out how to properly uninstall.
If none of those things work, I suggest that you contact the software developer and ask him for instructions on how to uninstall his app.
If this GarageSale is the app causing your problems, the developer offers email support via his "Contact & Support" link.

  • Firefox wants newer Flash player but my machine doesn't meet Flash 10.2 CPU speed

Just installed Firefox 3.6 and it says I need to update Flash player plug-in, but my machine doesn't meet the current Flash player 10.2 system requirements, ie for CPU speed. My CPU is 1.7 GHz. New Flash wants something like 2.4 GHz. I have 128 MB of dedicated graphics.
IE does display flash content, using Flash active X plug-in, 10.0.32.18
    Otherwise like Firefox.

Update to the latest version of Flash that is compatible with your system. (probably 10.1 r102) After that ignore Mozilla's messages about needing to update Flash.
IE uses a different version of Flash (ActiveX) than other browsers use (Plugin), so it's like comparing apples and oranges.

  • How to boost nokia e63 cpu speed

hello, please i am wondering if it is possible to boost the cpu speed of nokia e63, become its usually slow when performing various task like 1. When installing an application 2. When opening some big third party applications like opera mini, whats app, and some games 3. When removing an application, these are the areas where i,ve noticed nokia e63 being slow

Try closing apps which is running in the background. Clear browser cache and uninstall 3rd party applications which you don't use. Turn off theme effects. All this could affect the "speed" on your phone in a positive way.

  • Quicksilver CPU upgrade question

Hi, I've got a 733mhz quicksilver G4. I'm looking into upgrading to a dual 800mhz quicksilver cpu. Sound like a plan? I know not to get an mdd cpu as I've heard they won't work in the quicksilvers. Does this sound like a plan, the dual 800mhz?....is it worth it/ do you think I'll see a difference? The only thing this computer is mainly used for is online...it's a clean system, yet with all the moving ads they keep putting on yahoo, weather.com, etc...the single 733mhz is seeming a bit slow...even with a good amount of ram I have in there. Will this swap be a simple one 'pop out, pop in'....or is there anything I need to do since it's a double on mb with originally a single cpu? Thanks for your advice! How do you calculate the cpu speed...i know that this dual 800mhz is not the same as a 1.6ghz, but what would you call it equivalent to? Thanks for your advice-
    Message was edited by: funylinks2004

    Hi-
Any of the Quicksilver CPUs are plug and play/ interchangeable in the QS.
Just get the heatsink with it, as they vary. Dual processors must have a dual processor specific heatsink.
A dual 800 is equivalent to a 800 Mhz processor, except that there are two of them, that's all.
It is better than the QS single 800 MHz processor in that the single doesn't have a L3 cache.
What a dual does for you is to help with multitasking in OS X, speed up dual processor aware software and boost graphics and video handling ability.
A single 933 MHz processor is quite a bit faster than a 800 MHz processor, and way better than the 733 MHz processor due to L3 cache.
However, the dual 800 also has the L3 cache, so it will feel a bunch faster than the 733.

  • Minimum usable CPU speed for Photoshop Elements

It has a CPU described as:  A4-5000 APU with Radeon (tm) HD Graphics 1.5 GHz.
    Windows 8.1 operating system.
Will I be able to use Photoshop Elements on this?

I know about the min specs. The reason I'm asking if it really checks the CPU speed is I have a school that *is* running Premiere Elements 10 on the exact same hardware. Same CPU. The only difference is the new version I'm trying to install is the volume license version, part of the Adobe Digital School collection. The school that already has it running is using Premiere Elements 10 with either separate licenses or some other license setup. So it doesn't make sense why it worked but doesn't now.
Testing today. On my test PC, a Core 2 6300 XPsp3, the setup would start up OK using the non-VL installer, but fail when I tried to use the setup.exe from the new installer. As far as I know the program is the same, but I don't think I can do the XML customizations needed to do a silent installer on the non volume licensed version of Premiere Elements 10. In short, why does one version of PE 10 install but not the other?
