T430 Discrete GFX under Linux not booting

Hi all. I recently purchased a T430 with the NVS 5400M 2GB discrete GPU with the intention of using it as my dev machine for CUDA work. Unfortuneately, when I set the machine to boot with Optimus OS check disabled and the GPU set to Discrete I cannot boot into linux. I have tried installing with the inbuilt graphics, instlaling the NVidia binary blob, then changing over but the system just hangs while booting. I have tried booting into a live CD with the discrete option and it has failed to boot, and have tried a text-based installation and it still fails. I have been using Ubuntu 12.04 x64 default, alternate, and even Xubuntu. I have come to understand that this distro was supported (or at least proven to work) on this machine, but I haven't achieved this with the NVidia GPU.
If anybody has any suggestions for this I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
Lee.

Hello Loriordan,
I have T430 and was interested in the issues you were having and set my BIOS settings to what you stated and tried to load my Ubuntu 12.04 LTE x64 ( its on duel boot with Windows 7) and got a screen that was lined/black/purple/fuzzy and just frozen. I Know for a fact that if I revert the settings that I will be able to load into Ubuntu 12.04. As a side note windows 7 x64 bit loads fine with the BIOS setting you said. I know this isn't really a solution but a affirmation of your problem but I will be looking into it and I will get back to you with any fix or work around I can find.
Best Regards,
Hiro

  • SubNotFoundException under Linux not under Windows

    Hi,
    I got a RMI client server application. The server runs normal on my windows machine with JRE 1.5. But when I want to run it on my linux server with JRE 1.4, I get the following error:
    java.rmi.StubNotFoundException: Stub class not found: .....
    I used an Ant Build.xml file to create jar (2 --> 1 remote.jar and 1 server.jar) files. In the javac I set the target to 1.1. In rmic I used stubversion and set to 1.1. All my remote objects are in a seperate jar file that is included in my path when I start my server. I start my server with a bat and a sh file.
    run.bat (under Windows)
    set CPBEFORE=%CLASSPATH%
    set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;PpdaRemote.jar
    start rmiregistry 10001 -J- Djava.rmi.server.hostname=willemc
    set CLASSPATH=%CPBEFORE%;
    java -jar PpdaServer.jar
    run.sh (under Linux)
    CPBEFORE=$CLASSPATH
    export CLASSPATH="$CLASSPATH:PpdaRemote.jar"
    rmiregistry 10001 -J- Djava.rmi.server.hostname=willemc &
    export CLASSPATH=$CPBEFORE
    java -jar PpdaServer.jar
    Can anybody think of a solution for this. I have been working on it for a couple of hours. Upgrading my server to 1.5 is not possible (it's a sgi server).
    Thanks,
    Willem

    Nevermind. Fixed my own problem.

  • Docking station under Linux, T430/W530

    Hi all!
    How are the docking stations working under Linux? I am thinking especially of the T430 and W530 series. Also, is it possible to run three monitors on only the integrated graphics (HD4000)? I know it is supported on chip level, but does Lenovo enable this feature on the motherboard/docking station, or do I have to run the discrete card to get three monitors?

    Unfortunately, no. The VGA outputs seems to be dead, I don't know if they are actually broken or if it's just a driver thingie. However, having two external monitors using nVidia TwinView and a little hack found here: http://blog.gordin.de/post/optimus-guide is possible. Unfortunately, my window manager does not handle TwinView very well, and I am still to find a working solution for running two separate monitors on the digital outputs.

  • Linux not starting with fsck.ext3: Unable to resovle 'Label=/boot' error

    I tried to setup fs by following this
    http://blogs.oracle.com/AlejandroVargas/2006/12/how_to_create_configure_and_mo.html
    now i restarted & its not staring , i think if i change /etc/fstab and put the setting back i will be able to start it, But new to linux, any body know how to boot it in maintenace mode ? & put the files back i made changes?

    any body know how to boot it in maintenace mode ?If you could not boot into your system successfully, you need boot into rescue mode from Linux installation CD and then update your /etc/fstab.
    Here are steps:
    The system should boot from media and land you at the linux boot prompt (boot:). Enter 'linux rescue' and answer the
    questions posed ie.:
    language - english
    keyboard - us
    start network - no
    mount system under /mnt/sysimage - continue

  • 2009 Mac Pro will not boot up under Windows

    I have an Early 2009 Mac Pro system (Mac Pro 4,1) and I've had this system for 3 years already and have been working under OS X with this system ever since I purchased it.
    However, when I tried to boot off my Windows disk, something very interesting happens. The Mac Pro WILL NOT boot up off the Windows disk or a known working Windows partition if two monitors are connected. Upon holding down the option key and selecting the Windows partition, I will get a black screen on one monitor (the one connected via Mini Displayport) and the other screen receives no signal and will enter standby and the system is halted. It does not respond to keystrokes, there is no hard drive activity, no measured power increase on the UPS, no apparent network activity, nothing. The only way to exit this scenario (from what I can tell) is to power off the machine, disconnect the display on DVI, power on the machine again, select the Windows partition wait for the system to reach the login window and reconnect the DVI monitor (at which time Windows recognizes it immediately and the system works fine again).
    My question to the community is, does anybody know why this is happening and is there a known fix for this? Quite frankly, having to disconnect a monitor just to restart is very tedious and frustrating.
    I have two Samsung P2350 monitors attached to an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (512MB, from Apple). One is monitor is connected via directly DVI and the other is using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter. Both monitors work fine under OS X with no issue. At first, I thought that this may be a driver issue on the Windows side and after installing all the latest updates and drivers the issue is still apparent. From what I can tell, this doesn't seem like a software issue but rather a firmware or EFI issue as this happens before Windows even loads.
    If anyone knows of a fix or what to do in this situation, or if you are also having this issue, I would love to hear your input!
    Thank you!
    For the record, I am running all the latest software builds on the OS X side (10.7.4, not that it would really matter at this point). I have also disconnected all unnecessary equipment in a trial and error scenario but the results are still the same.
    The system passes all ASD testing.
    The full specification of the computer and all connected equipment are as follows:
    2009 Mac Pro (4,1) 8-Core
    2x Intel Xeon Nehalem 2.66GHz Quad-Core CPUs
    16GB DDR3 ECC 1066MHz RAM (Apple Branded)
    Two OWC 120GB SSDs (One for OS X, the other for Windows 7 x64) - These are in place of my optical drives.
    4x 2TB WD Black Hard drives for storage.
    Two Samsung P2350 Monitors connected via DVI. (One using a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter).

    In Windows I am using the latest (12.4) Catalyst Software Suite, 64 bit of course, downloaded directly from AMD's site after installing the drivers from Boot Camp.
    As for installing Windows I used an original (not burned) installation media (Disk is in a pristine condition). And yes, Windows is fine, the problem just seems to be getting the system to boot up Windows with that second monitor. However if the "problem monitor" is disconnected the system boots fine 100% of the time and connecting it later after booting the system will still operate properly.
    For the sake of arguement I swapped monitor cables and connected the "second" monitor to the mini displayport adapter to verify that it wasn't a cabling issue and I'm still yielding the same issues.
    As for GPU testing, I've played games (Crysis, Grand Theft Auto IV, Battlefield 3, etc.) and I've had no issues with the card or stability.
    You would think that Apple would try to find a fix for this, especially considering the caliber of this machine.

  • JMF code working under linux but not windows XP

    Hello everyone,
    I'm currently working on a nice cross-platform project involving sound producing. I decided to take a look at JMF and test it a bit to know if its features can suit me. I tried to make it works under windows, using a very simple sample of code. The system seems to play the sound as some console output detects the start and the end, but all i hear is a very short noise ( 1/2second ) like a "CLIK" and nothing else. I tested the code under linux, using the same computer and it works just fine, playing the same wave nicely and entirely.
    some info:
    -i used the cross platform JMF, no performance pack ( i tried it , but still no result )
    -the code just opens a file dialog and plays the selected file
    -the selected file was always a very simple .wav
    -i did not use system classpath variables because i don't like it, i rather use local classpath ( which works fine too, no doubt about it )
    -i tested this little soft on 2 other computer using windows XP, and still got the same result.
    Please, have you got an idea about what's going on ?

  • ARIAL FONT IN REPORTS(WINDOWS), NOT SHOWN CORRECTLY UNDER LINUX

    Our Reports are developed under Windows (Report Builder 9.0.4.0.33 and Windows 2000/Windows XP) and generated under Linux (IAS 10.1.2.0.2 with Red Hat Advanced Server). The Report Output is a PDF, that will be downloaded by the user with WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT. This works fine, but fonts are not shown correctly in the PDF, especially ARIAL, which is the font we use.
    I have run the Fontsolution Configuration Script from Metalink, but we still have a problem.
    When you look at the font.pdf, wich is the testreport from fontsolutions, some sizes and styles of Arial are printed correctly others not.
    Arial 8 is ok, but Arial 10 and Arial 12 are something like Times New Roman.
    Arial 12 Bolded is correct, but Arial 12 italic and Arial 12 bold italic are also not
    the Arial Font.
    How can we correct this problem?
    Regards
    Udo

    # helvetica Italic and helvetica Bold-Italic fonts, your entries must be:
    # [ PDF:Subset ]
    # helvetica..Italic.Bold.. = "Arialbi.ttf"
    # helvetica...Bold.. = "Arialb.ttf"
    # helvetica..Italic... = "Ariali.ttf"
    # helvetica..... = "Arial.ttf"
    # If helvetica..... entry appears in the top of the list, all the styles of
    # helvetica font in the layout will be subset as helvetica Plain font.
    uiprint.txt
    # This is the printer configuration file.
    # The format for entries in this file is:
    # <OSName>:<Type>:<Version>:<Long Name>:<Description File>:
    # The first field is the name of the printer. It is the name you give
    # to lpq.
    # The second field is the type of driver to be used for the printer.
    # Currently, "PostScript" and "ASCII" are the only types of driver for
    # printers supported for now. But in future we may be supporting
    # drivers for other printer types.
    # The third field is the version of the type of printer driver. It's 1
    # or 2 for all PostScript printers; or 1 for ASCII printers.
    # The fourth field is a long description of the printer. This will be
    # presented to the user in the "Choose Printer" dialog window.
    # The fifth field is the printer description file to be used. For
    # PostScript printers it is the PPD file of the printer. (This field is
    # currently unused for ASCII printers.)
    # You can use default.ppd for the description file if you don't have a
    # PPD file for the printer, but it's best to use the correct PPD file
    # for the printer.
    # You must fill in at least the first two fields (printer name and
    # type). If the version is empty, it defaults to "1"; if the long name
    # or description are empty, they will default to empty strings. A
    # version of 1 or an empty long name is fine, but, for PostScript
    # printers, you must fill in the description file name.
    # You don't have to update this file to use any printer. The printer
    # chooser interface let's you select a printer and driver at run time,
    # as well as associate a printer description file to the printer. You
    # should list all printers accessible to users here, however, to
    # simplify selecting a printer.
    # The first entry in this file will be used as the default printer, if
    # no printer was selected in the operating system. (For Unix, the
    # following environment variables will be used in turn to get the
    # default printer's name:
    # TK2_PRINTER
    # ORACLE_PRINTER
    # PRINTER
    # For other platforms, see the Installation and User's Guide for your OS
    # for information on setting the default printer.)
    # WARNING: Do not define multiple entries for the same printer by the
    # same name. Selecting a printer with multiple entries will always result
    # in the first entry being selected. Instead, see if your OS allows you
    # to create an alias for the printer, and use an alias for the second type.

    If you want to make platform independent use of fonts, you have to use the family, such as sans serif.
    Arial is owned by monotype (http://monotype.com/). You have to contact them if you wish to redistribute it with your application. They also might have a suitable version that renders nicely under linux.

  • Windows 8.1 will not boot after setting up dual-boot with Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon

    In which forum should I ask this question?
    After installing Linux Mint onto a partition of my hard drive, Windows 8.1 is listed a choice to boot into after restarting my computer, but will not boot up. It suggests a boot repair and to obtain Windows 8.1 from my distributor. I have seen on other forums
    that this has not worked, and I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions for how to proceed.
    Thanks in advance.

    You can try them over here.

  • T60p does not boot from new primary hard disk (Single-boot Linux/Fedora 14)

    Hi,
    I have just upgraded the primary disk in my T60p laptop (model 8742-C4G.) The BIOS recognised the disk fine, I partitioned it, marked the first partition as bootable, and then copied the OS (Fedora 14) and all my data back onto it. Then I installed the GRUB bootloader using the following commands:
    grub> root (hd0,0)
    grub> find /grub/stage1
    grub> setup (hd0)
    grub> quit
    I've also tried installing GRUB with "setup (hd0,0)" instead of "setup (hd0)", without success.
    This ran fine, exactly like with all the other PCs I've successfully performed this procedure on in the past. However, this laptop is refusing to boot from the new disk. There's no sign of any activity, either - just a flashing cursor in the top-left corner of the otherwise blank LCD panel. So I'm guessing that either the bootloader is failing immediately, or the laptop isn't executing the bootloader at all.
    The laptop is running the very latest v1.18 BIOS, and there are no beeps, POST errors or anything like that. My previous disk booted into Fedora 14 without any difficulty at all, of course.
    Can anyone suggest why the T60p is not booting, please? And also how to fix it? Is there any extra initialisation that I need to do in the BIOS, for example? (I haven't seen any...) The disk *does* appear in the BIOS's list of bootable media. Or maybe there's some special code that needs to be written into the MBR that GRUB doesn't know about?
    The disk is a 320 GB 7200rpm Western Digital drive, and the Lenovo/IBM salesperson assured me that it was fully compatible with a T60p laptop without the need for any extra firmware.
    Thanks in advance for any ideas, because I'm completely stumped at this point.
    Cheers,
    Chris
    N.B. This is a Linux laptop, and so Windows-centric suggestions aren't going to help me.

    You said you can't get into Windows safe mode, have you installed Windows on the hard drive?  Are you able to get into the BIOS for the controller?
    If you aren't able to access the BIOS for the controller, it may be due to bad RAM.  If you are comfortable installing RAM and you have some extra laptop RAM of the same type (I think it's DDR3 for your controller) laying around, you can try swapping out the RAM.
    Was your hard drive damaged through some event, or did it just stop working?

    I am trying to show images using Read_Image_File under

    Obviously since you have iOS 7 you're a developer.  As a developer, you signed a NDA with Apple not to discuss the iOS on a public forum.  Please log in to the Developer Forum using your credentials and ask for help there, lest you risk having your credentials terminated.

    can I ask how you solved it? I am having a problem

    only used quotes under Windows.

  • JCombox does not work under linux (fedora) could you help me???

    Hi All,
    I am implementing a GUI for a linux application. This GUI works fine under windows system. But the JCombobox does not work under Linux system. Would you help me to solve it? Thank you very much!..
    The problem is that I cannot select any other item except the first item in the dropdown box of JCombobox. There is no event generated when I click the combobox, while events are generated for other Buttons.
    This problem exists for the following code when I maximize the window. When the window is minimize to some extend in my problem, it is OK.

    Which way you prefer with actionPerformed should work either way.
    I think your problem was too many unnecessary Panels and set all attributes before it is added, perhaps,
    not add the panel first and then try to set attributes like layout, color, etc...

  • Linux-based Live-CDs Not Booting

    I have Toshiba Satellite M45-S169 that known good (working in other computers) Live-CDs will not boot.  While other Live Cd's will boot on the Toshiba laptop. Has anyone found a fix for this?
    CloneZilla Live-CD will not boot on the Toshiba, but does on other computers.
    SystemRescueCD Live-CD will not boot on the Toshiba, but will on other computers
    Bart-PE Windows XP Live-CD Boots on the Toshiba, and other computers.
    All of these CDs are Linux-based, which may or may not mean anything.  The one that works on the Toshiba is the oldest, so maybe it has to do with what basic Linux Kernel is being used.
    I really want to get CloneZilla to work on this so I can make a backup image.  The version of CloneZilla is their i486 one that claims to run on any i386 processor.
    The Toshiba has Windows XP-Home with Service Pack 3.  It works well, but would feel better if I had a backup. It has an Intel Celeron M processor reported to be 1.60 GHz with 1.43 GB RAM.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Jerry,
    Thanks for the reply - you are correct; I was mistaken about Bart-PE.  Don't know what I was thinking.
    I have worked around my Linux problem by installing Marium Reflect.  I wanted a way to create a backup image of the Toshiba C: drive and believed CloneZilla or other Linux-based software was the only answer. But found the Reflect free edition that worked. So my ultimate goal is achieved (without getting Linux to boot).  I now have a saved image of the hard disk and Win-PE based rescue disk that can be used to restore that image.  I feel safer now.  Hopefully I will never need it.
    It is disappointing that Linux wont run on this computer. I might investigate that further when I have the time. I just found another tool that wont run on this computer - Speccy from Piriform.

  • SetForeground in Applet does not work (Netbeans under Linux)

    I'm attempting to make a Breakout version of java (if I go through with it) and the first issue that I encountered is that I can't change the color of the moving rectangle (you know, the thing you hit the ball with). I tried the code under Textpad on a Windows machine and that worked fine, but not under Netbeans in Linux using jdk 1.6.0_01.
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.applet.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class Breakout extends Applet implements MouseListener, MouseMotionListener{
         int mouse_x, mouse_y;
         Thread t;
         public void init(){
              addMouseListener(this);
              addMouseMotionListener(this);
         public void start(){
              t= new Thread();
              t.start();
         public void run(){}
         public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseExited(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mousePressed(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent me){ }
         public void mouseMoved(MouseEvent me){
              mouse_x = me.getX();
              if(mouse_x>=400)
                   mouse_x=400;
              repaint();
         public void stop() {}
         public void destroy(){ }
         public void paint(Graphics g){
              setBackground(Color.black);
              setForeground(Color.white); //doesn't work
              g.drawRoundRect(mouse_x, 600, 50, 20, 20, 20);
    }I'm wondering if it's because the Applet under Linux uses the Native l&f theme while appets under Windows uses the Windows l&f theme.
    Any thoughts would be helpful!

    setForeground(Color.white); //doesn't work
    g.drawRoundRect(mouse_x, 600, 50, 20, 20, 20);Change this to:
    g.setColor(Color.WHITE);
    g.drawRoundRect(mouse_x, 600, 50, 20, 20, 20);You can move the background setting into method init(), calling it once is enough.
    I'm wondering if it's because the Applet under Linux
    uses the Native l&f theme while appets under Windows
    uses the Windows l&f theme.You use java.awt.Applet, so you use AWT which means there's no L&F theme (as in Swing) but it's native components being responsible.
