T430 Headphone Jack Volume Very Low

Hi,
I recently got a T430 and it's pretty nice overall, but the extremely low volume coming from the headphone jack is a major thorn in the side for me.  I've looked around at other solutions for people who have similar problems, and they all seem to point to either Conexant or SmartAudio and I can't find either of those anywhere on my machine.
So is there any way to remove the volume limiting on the T430?  If so, what should I look for on my computer to adjust or remove that limit?
Running Windows 8 Pro, bought in May 2013.  Let me know if you need any other information!
Thanks!

I am having a similar issue after purchasing a T430. The price of the machine was great, but it doesn't warrant that something as simple as audio should be so poor.
I haven't yet tried this on windows (I am primarily on Ubuntu), but attempted multiple different types of headphones and situations to get it working.
Somehow, after testing out a sound connection via a pair of PC speakers plugged into the jack and my headphones (headphones meaning the small fit-in-ear ones), the sound seems to have improved when doing a direct connection into the jack with the headphones.
Here are some caveats though:
The headphones with an "okayish" sound have 3 black rings (otherwise known as 3-pin).
I did not plug the 3-pin in completely and left 1 pin slightly out (which improved the sound somehow)
The volume at which the sound is decent (compared to an older machine where 20% was quite high on Ubuntu), this one is now at 50%
I also tested out a pair of earphones (the big ones) and I managed to get some serious "bass" at a volume of 80+% and the same jack technique where it is not fully in.
I suspect (1 or more of) 3 things:
The actual soundcard provided with the T430 is low quality
The soundcard on some of the machines (like mines and the OP) is damaged
The soundcard requires a special jack or filtering device (as mentioned on some of the other search results)
I will be starting my own thread to finally resolve this sound issue that seems to plague the T4xx line. Hopefully we can (as a community) diagnose the real issue (which I suspect is a low-grade soundcard) and have users finally know what is wrong and what can/can't be done to fix it.

  • MBP audio out from headphone jack is extremely low in volume

i just sent my macbook pro 13in (mid 2009 model) to the apple store (out of warranty). my problem was that the audio out from the headphone jack was very very low and staticky. the problem arose about 2-3wks ago. i've owned the laptop since june 2009. i've never dropped or damaged it (no water damage, etc)
my local apple store told me they had to replace logic board which seems extreme for what my problem is. i've read numerous forum posts saying that their computers came back with flickering "kernel panic"
has anyone else had a similar audio problem with their computer, and if so was it resolved in this manner?
    thanks!

I think you may be mistaken. the static coming from macbooks audio output port is as old a story as the macbook itself. IMO, epic fail on apple's part. I am debating complaining in a few months when I decide I deserve a better sound quality from a ridiculously overpriced laptop.

  • Headphone volume very low :-(

This might be the result of new EU standards:http://www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk/your-hearing/tinnitus/eu-standards-for-personal-music-players.aspxhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-21294537Action on Hearing Loss says overexposure to loud music can trigger tinnitus.Experts say the limit is "good news".Tinnitus is a medical term used to describe a ringing or buzzing noise that people can hear permanently in one ear, both ears or in the head.It is often caused by exposure to loud music and can be accompanied by hearing loss.

  • Audio via headphone jack is really low

The sound from internal speakers is fine, but audio via the headphone jack is really low.

    Hi Krich918,
Your computer can tell when you have something plugged into the headphone port, and it remembers a separate volume profile for each (internal speakers vs. headphones). You may want to double check that the volume is up on the Sound preference pane in System Preferences when you have your headphones plugged in, as outlined in the following article (apologies if you have already done so):

try to set the 'volume limit' to 'off'.
You will found that in Settings -> Music --> Volume Limit.
Or there may be a number of reasons; like : the poor audio quality of the music you have loaded.
Use some good quality songs; then I think, it will be fine.

  • Incoming ring and text volume very low!

hi, have recently noticed that when i lower volume level for music, video, games, other media, it also reduces my ringtone and notification volume level too! (even though the slider bar level is on max for ringtones, notifications.) so if for e.g i lower video volume on youtube etc, it takes my incoming call and text volume down too! this never use to happen and only noticed when i saw led missed call, text, flashing.try your own z3c?
    settings-
    sound-
    volumes-
    music,video,etc (on low)-
    ringtone&notification(max)
    ok.
now check incoming call, text volume (very low on mine) so i have to reset music, video, games etc to max to hear incoming calls, texts but i dont want max volume for music, video,,,
b.t.w I'm still on kitkat 4.4.4 but as i said the volume levels could be individually adjusted since out of box.
now strange thing is my mate has the xperia sp and i checked his yesterday and he had same issue (jellybean) and because his volume level on video, games etc is low but max on ringtone, text he too misses calls and texts! (unless of course he sets max volume on the video, games). also using volume on side of phone has no effect either.
    any ideas?
    cheers.

  • I have just replaced the headphone jack, volume button and mute switch ribbon in my sister's iphone

As you see I replaced the ribbon on my sister's iphone. The volume buttons and mute switch dont work while the headphone jack works perfectly. Also it cannot find any wifi networks. Anyone having the same problem? This iphone has not been restored since it was bought. Or should she update to iOS7 maybe that'll help?
    Thanks

Thanks but thats not gonna happen. Way too expensive, the company I bought the replacement off send me another one maybe its the ribbon. Im going to restore it first though.

  • Macbook Pro Headphone Jack, a very strange thing going on with it? help

    Hello,
My Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2011 has had this very annoying small issue for over a year with the headphone jack. Sound only plays through the headphone jack as per normal when i restart the laptop, but once i remove the headphones and plug them back in sound isn't going through the headphone, it's going through the speakers as if headphones aren't plugged in, to have it working as normal i have to restart the laptop again.
Is this a hardware or software issue?
    Please help me resolve this..
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Since this is a brand new MBP under warranty, the best thing to do is to contact Apple and tell them about your difficulties. If you have access to an Apple Store, you might want to bring your Mac in and show them what it is doing. This does not sound at all normal, and it's very possible that you have hardware issues involved. If so, you should be eligible for a repair under warranty or possibly even a replacement if you are still in the first 2 weeks of ownership.
There is a long thread which may be relevant:

It's probably too long to read the whole thing, but you might browse the posted images and see if this looks like your problem.

  • Audio: voiceover volume very low; & can't permanently delete original audio

I'm finishing off a project started by a colleague. In a number of clips, the speed of the footage has been reduced to 25%. The original audio is still embedded in those clips, but is not used and has been muted. I want to record a voiceover, and am using a USB microphone on my iMac. The recording levels work fine when I test them in GarageBand, but when I record the voiceover in iMovie, it's extremely quiet. I've tried increasing the volume to 200%; I've tried turning ducking on and off; and I've even recorded the voiceover in GarageBand, exported it to iTunes, where it sounds fine. But the minute I import it into my project, the volume goes right down.
I've tried detaching and deleting the original audio track from the relevant clips, in case this is causing problems (because the speed of the audio track is also reduced to 25%). But even if I empty my trash, when I go back to the clips, I can still detach the audio, so it hasn't really been deleted.
So. Can anybody suggest a solution to the low volume, and whether this might have anything to do with the speed reduction on the originally embedded audio?

I booted into Windows XP on Bootcamp, and it seems to have the same problem. I also tried the backup of my Tiger system on my external hard drive, and again, the same problem. I tried resetting PMU, but it's still the same. Again, for some reason, my internal speakers are working fine, but when I plug in headphones, the volume is really low even when I turn the volume all the way up. I tried this on iTunes, youtube, and the click sound when you turn up the volume from the keyboard. I can't hear any of them unless I have the volume turned all the way up, and even then, I can barely hear the sound.

  • Laptop Audio volume very low

    Hi Experts,
I bought my Inspiron laptop in January and was hoping for good sound quality based on the advertised Waves MaxxAudio. However I find the laptop volume is very low and end up holding the speakers close to my ears when doing a skype call.
Is this an issue I need to take up with warranty support or are the speaker volumes expected to be this low?

Hello. Some of the models do have adequate volume and some have low volume, but it is a subjective thing and I don't know if anyone can say that your volume is normal or not without hearing it. Even then they would need to compare it with others of the same model. If you post your model name then maybe someone with that model will express an opinion.
If the volume is low only in Skype but okay when playing an audio file from the hard drive, then probably a Skype setting. Right click on the volume icon on the taskbar and click on "Open volume mixer" to see individual volume sliders for each device.
Also you could test by switching from the vendor's audio driver (varies by model but probably Realtek) to the Windows native audio driver. If the volume seems too low (when playing audio files) with both drivers then there could be a hardware problem.
    1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the Windows search box).
    2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
    3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
    4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
    5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
    6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
    7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).
    8. Click "Next".
    9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
    10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.
[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 1 and 6.]
Note that the above instructions are for models with a Realtek audio driver. If yours uses IDT or Conexant, look for those names in the Device Manager.

  • Notifications volume very low

I just updated my Q10 to OS 10.3.1.1581 and now when i get notifications the sound is very low even with the volume setting at its highest level.  My wife updated hers at the same time and she has the same problem.  Is anyone else having this problem?

Blackberry won't even tell us that they are aware of this.. This is unacceptable! I read that there were 6 months of beta testing and notification volume was a known reported issue.. How can they not bother to fix such a MAJOR issue and release such a deal breaking OS update? Please update us on the issue blackberry!

What I'm about to say is totally crazy and no one should try this if they have the same problem!
    Ok are you ready?
As I got to a stage where I almost want to smash my phone, somehow an angel in me came out and said "why don't you just tap it against the table first before you hammer it?". So I did just that and guess what? God must have spare my N82 from the devil in me because it is actually working fine now!
I told you it's crazy... and please don't ask me how hard I tap it?
