T430: Super-high Optimus power consumption

Hi,
I've got a brand-new 2349-D17 (T430 with Optimus graphics). I just installed Windows 7 Pro 64, installed the drivers from the matrices and wrote a detailled review over the last days.
In between, I did a little benchmarking to investigate the fan controls. I found the T430 to run very hot in the basic Optimus setting. At some point I tried changing the Graphics cards manually in the BIOS and compared three scenarios:
1) Nvidia graphics - OPTIMUS
2) Intel graphics - OPTIMUS
3) Intel graphics - BIOS hardwired
I got a pretty weird result:
Click me!
It basically shows that Intel graphics switchable by Optimus made the machine run A LOT hotter than Intel graphics hardwired on BIOS. That's weird, since Optimus with inactive Nvidia graphics should make the laptop run at about the same setting as Intel graphics only.
Now, since heat emission directly corrolates to power consumption, I decided to have a look at the battery drain. Here's what we got:
Click me too!
Now this is even more interesting. It basically shows that Optimus NOT using the Nvidia graphics drains MORE power than BIOS hardwired Nvidia graphics. Needless to say, it also drains a LOT MORE power than BIOS hardwired Intel graphics.
Since Optimus is actually supposed to REDUCE idle power consumption to a level nearly as low as BIOS hardwired Intel graphics, something is obviously wrong here. I hope it's a driver problem, yet I use the original Lenovo optimus drivers downloaded from the T430's driver matrices. I even installed the Windows updates from System update, yet that didn't help either.
So what can I do to fix this? Are there any other Optimus drivers I could try?
Solved!

Did you happen to have PowerManager open during any of this? According to this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Thinkpad-T430-Optimus-power-usage/td-p/7819... the PowerManager program can cause the Optimus card to switch between idle & off. Idle causes power drain.
That thread also has instructions relating to installing the Optimus Tester Tools to determine the state of the card, and which programs is causing the GPU to be on. If you do not think that PowerManager was causing the problem, you could try installing the Optimus Tester Tools, and then let us know what it says. I like the "nVidia Optimus GPU State Viewer" with the "Show applications rendered by DGPU" checked. It seems to tell me what I need to know.
Let us know what applications you find are causing the nVidia card to be on.

  • Facility High Rx Power on 10DME card

    Hi all
I found message "Facility high Rx Power" on 10DME card. So, I need to know what is the root cause and reason to get the message. Please give me the idea or comment.
    Thanks
    V
Note: Please see the picture from attach file

it is -8dBm threshold set on 10DME.
    it is by default.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/optical/ps5724/ps2006/ps5320/product_data_sheet0900aecd803fc51a.html
in the link given above search for "DWDM Receive Side Optical Performances"
so by default we have a threshold of -8dBm high-Rx power and -20dBm for low-Rx power.
so now question is that from where we start getting -7dBm on trunk port, this we can ignore for now, as -7dBm is fine will not cause any issues.
so to clear alarm you can either change threhsold and put a 3 or 4 dB attenuator pad on trunk port of this 10DME.
i don't know your design, but we can even change VOA on add-drop cards.
but as i said -7dBm is fine, so just change threshold for now.
let me know what we need to do.

  • All out cpu+ super high heat+all out fans due to dashboard?

ok heres what happened, my external drives got accidentally disconnected and causes a Kernel panic (its due to a softraid driver issue). so then when i rebooted my mirror raid was out of sync.
at this point my machine tried to start rebuilding it, tried to index my spot light, along with the basic starting up settling ins. i hit my dashboard and nothing loaded, i pulled up activity monitor and most of my dashboard widgets were running super high and non responsive.
after a few restarts, with stopping the rebuild which let the indexing finish in a reasonable time, i was able to actually interact with my DB, most of the items still wouldnt load and still were running high. the only way i could get it to stop was to remove the widget and the pull up a new one, so basically i just dumped them all and rebuilt my dashboard.
after that it stopped, never had the issue before (hadnt changed my dashboard for at least 4-6 months) never experienced this before at all and havent had it come back. any body have this or have any idea why it would have happened (it lasted through a few restarts so it wasnt just a random runaway process)

Sorry for ignoring you, S.U. I haven't been checking posts since I'm not having any problems right now, but I had some free time at work and decided to check to see what was going on at iBooks.
I put my iBook on a board that's about 3/8" thick and 10" x 15". I started doing that so the computer's on a level surface, and because I didn't like my lap getting warm from the heat of the computer. I never heard of a chill mat. The temperature's down quite a bit now, but if we have another heat wave next year I'll try to remember to elevate the iBook with something - perhaps saved screw caps from milk jugs.
I really couldn't tell you if my fan has been coming on lately. It has in the past, but I haven't been paying attention to what the fan's been doing recently. I'll try to remember to notice if I hear fan noises when I next get a chance to do some writing.
Thank you for your suggestions. I'll mark your post as "helpful" since you have tried to help me, and your ideas may be useful if more problems come along.

  • T430 not booting - flashing power button

A friend of mine asked me to look at his T430 because it wasn't booting.  Basically as soon as you plug the AC adapter in the CPU fan turns on (sounds like full speed) and the power button pulses / flashes (once every 2 seconds fading in and out).   I have stripped everything out (down to the mainboard but still doing the same thing.  Even with the processor and memory out still does the same thing.
Without AC and the battery in pressing the power button yields the same result.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Heard of this? Know the solution? Or even know what this type of error signifies?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need to get it fixed for him ASAP.

    Hi, welcome to the forum!
I hope that this classic trick will help you with your troubles:
    Remove battery and power cable.
Press the power button 10 times in a row, each time just for a fraction of a second. Then press it once again and hold it for 30-40 seconds and release. Try to start it again, post back here with results.

  • How to maintain high battery power?

For MacBook Pro, the battery was built-in with system, unlike other ordinary notebook where they are detachable. Please suggest which below is the proper way to use with charger and battery so as to maintain high power battery life.
    1. Whenever AC power is available, always connect charger with AC power supply, no matter whether the battery has been charged or not.
    2. Connect charger only whenever battery power has been used up. Whenever battery has been charged, detach the charger so as to allow battery power to be used up again. The procedure will be iterated.
I suggested the Apple web page about battery, however I cannot interpret what the answer should be for my above question.
I look forward to a procedure so as to decrease the battery life depreciation. Perhaps you would noted that, for ordinary notebook, if their battery was continuously charged, no matter it has been charged fully or not, the battery life will be depreciated, where the maximum power would be lower and lower gradually even when it was fully charged. Therefore, in the old day, I would normally detach the battery and directly connect power supply so as to avoid battery power depreciation.
    Please comment.

    HI,
Open System Preferences/Energy Saver. Where you see Settings for, click that pop up menu and select Battery. Now click the Optimization button and select Better Battery Life.
*"Whenever AC power is available, always connect charger with AC power supply, no matter whether the battery has been charged or not"*
    Yes.
*"Connect charger only whenever battery power has been used up. Whenever battery has been charged, detach the charger so as to allow battery power to be used up again. The procedure will be iterated"*
No. Connect to AC power whenever you can.

  • High frequency power measurements

    Hey,
I'd like to know if there are developments in measuring electrical high frequency signals with labview without using an extern power analyser. At the moment i'm using a yokogawa power analyser but i'd like to know if it's possible to log HF signals without the help of a power analyser... Are there NI products on the market for this purpose?
    Thx,
    Andy

    Hello,
In the case of frequencies up to 200 KHz, NI can provide several solutions using the 'standard' data-acquisition boards or digitizers (scopes), from a low to very high accuracy solutions.
A good solution can be one of the high speed M-series boards (PCI-625x).  These boards have up to 32 multiplexed channels with a resolutions of 16-bit at a speed of 1 MS/s  (500 KHz).
A better solution would be a S-series boards.  These data-acquisition boards sample all input channels simultaneously.  We have boards with 2, 4 and 8 channels and sample frequencies of 10 MS/s  (up to 5 MHz if needed).  S-series board are the boards with product numbers PCI-61xx.
The best solution is to use a digitizer (scope).  Also here a lot of possibilities going from low to higher bandwidth and resolution.
The most flexible is the PXI-5922.  A 24-bit digitizer if you sample @ maximum 500 KS/s.  This board only exist in the PXI platform.
Then NI has 8-bit digitizers (normal resolution for scopes) from 15 till 125 MHz bandwidth.  If you need a higher resolution they have solution up to 14-bit (very high for scopes) @ 100 MHz.
Please give your local NI Office a phone call.
They have technical engineers who can discuss your needs and provide you a solution.

  • Videos play too fast on ipad - sounds like super high speed mini mouse

We just bought the ipad and when we play videos on vimeo or youtube they play at an ultra high speed like the fps is messed up - it sounds like a record being played too fast
Is this our ipad or a setting - we are worried because we do not see the problem listed anywhere else.
    Thanks!

Have your rebooted/restarted your iPad? you do that by pressing the Home and power/sleep button at the same time until the slider to power off the iPad appears. Slide the slider and when screen activity stops depress the two buttons again until the Apple logo appears. When the iPad completes rebooting try again to see if that solved your problem.

  • RMBP - high frequency/power noise when doing file operations?

    Hi,
I noticed today that my new rMBP is emitting some strange high pitched noise, especially when doing heavy files operations like spotlight indexing or startup of the computer. It's louder and more prominent when I connect the AC adapter. It sounds like some power interference, a bit like some broken chargers do or Iphone 4s when transmitting 3G data.
It's not very loud but I can hear it clearly, when sitting in a silent room, even without closing my ear to the Macbook.
Has anybody noticed that or can advise something? Is that normal with those machines or some issue that has to be fixed? I really don't want to return it, as it is perfect otherwise...
    Thanks in advance for feedback.

here is the link to a sample of that noise. Please listen from 15 second:

    Hi!
On my t430s I can't get the Thinkvantag Power Manager working. Was someone succesful with this?
    Thanks!

    "Erm...how do I do that??"
Install Power Management driver. Download Lenovo Power Manager for Windows7 to desktop or wherever you want.
Right click the file > Properties > Compatibility > Windows7. Haven't tried it myself but it appears people with Windows
    8 say that it's working.

  • Issue on CWDM high Rx power

i have 2 test switches setup in a LAB, each switch connecting to each over CWDM-Mux-8A, using various differenet wave CWDM SFPs on both switches, and i have  tried it using different ports on the Cisco switch, different  CWDM MUX-8A, different CWDM SFP 1490, 1590, 1550, I even tried different Cisco switch, different switch port, and using different single mode fiber patch cable. All are new SFP and new patch cable and new CWDM MUX-8A.  I even bypass the CWDM 8-port MUX directly, just connecting CWDM SFP 1490 ---to-----CWDM SFP 1490 directly, and also did the same for CWDM 1590….etc.   But i'm gettting below:
BAD Case:  if I push the LC connector on both ends of the single mode fiber cable, all the way into the CWDM SFPs on both ends of this fiber cable , and stop when you hear the “clicking” sound, the interface just won’t come up on both sides of the switch, below is the show interface transceiver:
    Test-SW01#
    Test-SW01#sh int trans module 1
If device is externally calibrated, only calibrated values are printed.

Good Case:  but if I let one end of the fiber cable loosely hangs on the SFP port, not inserting fully by avoiding hearing the “click” sound when LC connector connecting to the CWDM SFP on one of the switch, then the interface will be UP on both side:

why is that ?  how do i attenuate the Rx Power from -40 down to -8 ?  do i need an external optical attenuator to adjust the power ?  or is it because these are in LAB environment, the patch cable are too short, thus power is high ?
    thanks,

I'm very curious what the issue is. Strange that it would work when the connector is fully seated in the SFP port.  Are the optical jumpers from a name brand manufacturer? Is the connector end green or blue in color?
When connecting a CWDM SFP back to back, it should have 10dB attenuators placed in the path to prevent overloading the optical receiver in the SFP.  It is possible, even with the MUX8A filters in-line with a short 15m fiber jumper, that you are over-loading the receivers; causing the system not be be able to decipher the signal. The info you provided above shows a transmit level of +8.1 dBm (higher than the typical +3dBm specification).
When you determine what the problem is, please post it on this site!
    Thank you,

  • Mavericks use super high memory after upgraded from 2008 early

I suffered this pain after I upgraded from 10.7 to 10.9 on my early 2008 MacBook Pro.
Just as image shown above, I don't know what reason will cause this problem. It usually gets high with unknown operation.
I only get 4G memory. After I start 10.9, its kernel process and finder process consume almost 2/3 memory, it is so reduclous.
Is there any way I can reduse the memory usage of finder or prevent it eats memory so high ?

    arthur, thank you,
I do worry about it, because 4G is not enough any more for these memory monster =.=
They together eat almost 3.99 GB memory, so that Mac becomes slow and shows SBBOD a lot and not responsive for many many seconds. It slow down my daily work a lot.

  • NF980-G65 Super high temp on AUX?

I have an unidentified sensor on my board that is reading as high as 99c under load. It shows up as AUX in Everest. AUX in FANspeed, AUX in OCCU, etc.. I can touch all the major components heat sinks and do not get burned.....so  is this thing?  It does not show up at all in NVIDIA monitor (neither does the CPU core temp) MCP is listed and is within tolerance levels.. Any ideas?  I do not see any performance hit when it is under load but as you can imagine, I am worried something is going to melt.    (posting at NVIDIA site too)

mine is the same as is everyones on the internets, it fluctuates from 80c-100c and does go down when i apply cool air to the n force heatsink, bogus for sure than? i kjnow this post is old but time to bring it back

  • MacbookPro High CPU, Power Drain, and Heats

Hey. I have just noticed my Macbook Pro has some problems: it has a high CPU usage, high energy impact, and high temperature.
This still happens when the laptop is idle. The temperature's around 70Celcius. In activity monitor, it doesn't show any apps using significant energy, but you can see a drastic battery drain.
    I've attached some images.
    Thanks for any help!
