T430 Ultrabay or HDD Caddy and mSATA

Hi,
I just ordered my T430 and waiting for delivery. I was wondering if it is possible to use built-in HDD and add a second HDD with UltraBay or HDD Caddy for storage and programs and also add a mSATA SSD for OS installation.
3 Hard Drives on a laptop is what I am looking for. I am a heavy VMware user and need to install separate VMs to separate HDDs. If this is possible, is it advisable?
Also I would be glad if you can give me some advice with the drives. I think with the 2nd HDD (UltraBay or Caddy) I am OK with 12.5 mm but I just couldn't be sure.
Solved!

In response to the original post, I was also going to install the operating system on the mSATA drive but I'm not going to now because there was a post that I read that advised against it.
I can't find the post right now but I highly recommend you do some more research before going into it. Cheers
If you find that post, please post a link.
IIRC there was a thread/post advising to not use the caching SSD that shipped with these machines for the main OS drive.
That was to do with the specific technology of that particular SSD.  It was not stating that it was a bad idea to use an SSDs in general for an OS drive.

  • Help adding SSD to Flex 15 using HDD caddy and One Key Recovery

    Hello,
Can anyone give me a little guidance on how I can add an SSD to my Lenovo Flex 15 by replacing my optical drive with a HDD caddy? I want to use the SSD as the boot device and use the exhisting 1 TB HDD(It's not a hybrid drive) as a storage drive.I was hoping to be able to use the One Key Recovery tool as that is the only way I have of installing Windows 8.1 since the laptop did not come with a recovery CD. Anyone know of any step-by-step guides or anything that could help me get this done?
Thanx for any help you can give

i have a flex 15 but mine as the drive with ssd all you have to do is replace the drive you have with a drive that has ssd one,
us an external usb caddie and a clone software to clone your existing drive to the new drive then replace it ive done this many times

  • T430s upgrading from HDD with 16G mSATA SSD to primary SSD - what to do with mSATA SSD

    Hi all,
I am going to install a Samsung 840 pro 256G SSD to replace my HDD that came with my T430s.  It also came with a 16G mSATA SSD "cache" drive.  Once I install the primary 256G SSD, I think the mSATA SSD will be useless and only going to cause trouble.
My question is, can I just remove it at the same time as I swap the HDD and SSD or will that cause problems? Are there proper steps to follow in this situation? Will any info be lost if I just take it out?.....I figure not since it is just a "cache" drive which is not supposed to really store any  files.
    thanks,
    Dan
btw - my overall impression is that this mSATA "cache" thing has been basically useless and a waste of money.

My 16GB SanDisk U100 is giving a SMART error as noted by a variety of tools (Crystal Disk, SanDisk SSD Toolkit, Lenovo's boot diagnostics), and is failing and useless. I was thinking of replacing, but I have a couple of questions:
Will ExpressCache work just as effectively if I get a 32GB mSATA and partition out 16GB for caching and the rest of data?
Are bus transfer speeds any different if on mSATA vs. internal HD port? Meaning is internal HD on a faster bus configuration than mSATA?
I also wonder by OP thought ExpressCache was useless. I also like the idea of getting a large mSATA such as lead_org mentions, but I wonder if it is more cost effective to just get a single 1TB internal HD with hybrid SSD technology...

  • Hard Drive Bay (Caddy) and drive for T430

Very confused about what the recommended HDD Caddy for T430 is. (to swap DVD drive with a 2nd HDD)
Also, is there a non Lenovo HDD that works with this? 1 TB drive preferred.
    Thanks.

    Ultrabay caddies come in two thicknesses, 12.7mm for T430 and T530 (0A65623), and 9.5mm for T430s (43N3412.)
You can buy these from Lenovo or you can get "clone" caddies quite inexpensively on eBay, e.g. 9.5mm Bezel SATA 2nd HDD Hard Drive caddy bay for T400s T500 T410s X200 is $10 for a 9.5mm unit. This is what I have in my T430s. A 9.5mm caddie will fit into your T430 but will leave a small gap at the top. You can search to see what 12.7mm caddies are available.
I haven't tested the clone caddies with HDDs larger than 500GB. There's no reason they won't work. Note that the HDD must be no thicker than the caddy in order to fit physically. Since you have a T430 with 12.7 Ultrabay opening this shouldn't be an issue for you either.

  • I want to dual boot windows 7 and Arch with an HDD caddy.

I am thinking of two possiblities with this scenario.  I want to first leave my windows 7 install on the hard drive that came with my laptop, and leave that HDD where it is, but in a few days, i'm getting a caddy so i can switch my optical drive for another HDD, which is going to be a 250gb.  On the 250, i want to experiment with arch, and maybe other linux distros, so i can get a nice feel for linux once again, it's been about 2 years since I've played with it.  What i am hoping to maybe do is switch those hard drives out, if I can get a linux install i feel 100% comfortable with, and running the windows HDD in the caddy, and the linux HDD installed in the motherboard.
I just have a few questions though.  First, is it possible to boot Arch when it is an HDD caddy? and second, would windows possibly work if i moved that hard drive into the caddy later?

Yes, and yes.  Both should be quite easy.
You should be able to set you BIOS to boot from one or the other - or alternately you can chainload windows from a linux boot loader quite easily (if/when linux is on the drive that the BIOS has selected to boot).

  • Model and brand name of the hdd and msata provided with msi gs70 stealth 077

i would like to know which brand and model is the hdd and msata is used in the msi gs70 stealth 077 series laptop.
also can i add one more msata myself after buying the laptop?

just a note hchg, apperently i think msi uses Hitachi and TOSHIBA drives in all of their GS70 so it shouldn't depend up on country since Hitachi apperently is a quality drive so since your paying hige price for laptop which means you get quality hard disk it's not like msi would put WD drive or SEAGATE drive in any of their MSI models at such price.

  • T540p 2nd hdd caddy problem

    Hello everyone
I got my new thinkpad t540p and by caddy for 2nd hdd for it
Bought here - ebay caddy for thinkpad t540p
    And I have a problem
I replaced optical drive by caddy, but OS don't found 2nd hdd.
It is not in Windows device manager. and not in bios boot list.
Optical drive works fine, OS detects it.
I check caddy by connected it on usb adapter - all works. Hdd works. Try with 2 hdd and 1 ssd.
    It not work in caddy
Do somebody have any ideas what I doing wrong?

I purchased the HDD caddy from Amazon and no, it will not work.  I have tried four HDD in the adapter - nothing.  The computer does not mount it or recognize it.  This appears to be a problem.  The adapter is well made, includes the bezel which matches perfectly.  On any drive I can remove the caddy and connect by cable to usb port and all drives work.  The system does not recognize a caddy.  Period.  The BIOS has an entry to enable CD/HDD in ultrabay and it is enabled.  So, not likely to work unless Lenovo can step in and help.

  • Lenovo T410s, T420s, T430s, Ultrabay battery falls off

    Hi,
At the company i am working at we have bought a whole bunch of T410s, T420s and some brand new T430s with a extra battery (ultrabay) instead of a DVD player, but for some reason the extra battery falls off at random when you lift the laptop. This problem is not on every laptop but i'ts on 3/10 of them.
It seems like the lock for the dvd/battery is broken, but I've open it up and made sure nothing was broken. Nada, but on one of the computers (a t430s) the battery connector was broken and some small parts of the battery was still stuck on it, like someone has bruteforced the battery to connect to the computer to not fall off.
Might this hardware problem be a cause of wrong batterys for the model? Or is this factory-related?
Ideas on how to fix this or is it just to send them to lenovo for repair?

I've found a way to start battery charge process - turn off (disable) BIOS -> I/O -> "Ultrabay CD/HDD". But the problem is that charge current is too small - it starts at 0.10A, then (very quick) drops to 0.01A value and stops when 2%  of capacity. What is this? I need to work (I'm a microelectronics engineer), not to repair notebook.
PS I'm monitoring current at Power Manager software.

  • W510 with hdd caddy 0A65623

    Hello,
I have a Lenovo w150 and I am looking for a hdd caddy to insert my hdd into the optical drive slot. (In order to replace the standard hdd with an ssd).
So I seached the internet and found a few posts on the original 43N3412 caddy. People say that it does not fit correclty into the notebook, leaving a 3mm wide slot. So I kept on searching and found the new 0A65623 caddy, which is officially dedicated to the w520 upwards.
My question is whether the 0A65623 fits into the w510 case?
Thanks a lot for your help,
    bright1

    Hello bright1,
Here is a link to a bay adapter available by Lenovo:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-73170
As you can see this is the adaptor you would need to place a hard drive in the optical bay of the computer.
There are several different hard drives listed at the bottom of the page on the link that are compatible with the adapter.
This will be your best choice so there is no "wiggle room" for your hard drive.
Unfortunately the caddy you found for the W520 and up is not compatible with your W510.  This is due to the bay dimensions.  Your w510 has room for a 9.5mm drive when the w520 has a 12.5mm drive.
The optical drive is an ultrabay drive, this is just its design.  This is why you would need an ultrabay adapter rather than just a caddy.
    I hope this helps,
    Alex

  • "No bootable disk" when installing Windows 7 on Macbook Pro (HDD caddy)

    Here's the deal.
    I have a 2011 Macbook Pro (8,1) that I bought a HDD caddy for.  It's beautiful.
I replaced the superdrive with a 1tb hard drive and it's wonderful.  I want to install Windows 7 via bootcamp on it.  I go through the steps (create install usb, download extra files, partition the drive) and once it restarts I get the following error:
I press keys, reinsert the usb stick repeatably, and finally hold down the power button to restart.  After holding down option to bring up the boot menu, this is what I get:
Where did my other disks go?!  I boot normally and check Disk Utility and, look at that, there they all are!
I've gone through variations of this for 3 days now.  Please help!

I recently ran into a very similar issue. Windows, or at least Boot Camp, will not boot into an HDD that is installed in the optical drive bay. I do not know why this is, or if there is a way to fix it; all I know is that as soon as I moved my HDD back to the HDD bay, Windows started booting again.
Boot camp has many issues with MacBooks whose optical drives have been replaced, which are well-documented on the web. This article (and its comments) describe many of them, and the workarounds that people have found for them. That said, I think that Boot Camp has improved with Mountain Lion (or possibly with the continued proliferation of optical drive-less machines from Apple), because I was able to boot the Windows installer just fine from the optical drive that I had removed and placed in an external USB enclosure. (Not that it did me any good - I received the dreaded error 0x8030024 when I tried to actually install Windows.)
What worked for me was to install Boot Camp before removing my optical drive, use WinClone to make a copy of that installation, and then clone the image back to the drive once I'd gotten my drives in place.
    So, in summary:
Try putting Boot Camp on the drive that's in your HDD bay.
The article I linked describes many of the issues you might run into and provides workarounds for them.
Worst case, you may have to reinstall the optical drive in order to install boot camp, then use WinClone to move the installation to any drive you wish. (Hang onto this image for all future Boot Camp installations.)

  • Satellite P300-20H - Second HDD caddy

    Satellite P300-20H, PSPC8E
This laptop has a second HDD bay and a second drive works in the bay.
I have tried in vain to find a HDD caddie for the second HDD bay, can anyone point me in the right direction for the part number or a shop that sells them.
    Thanks

I have upgraded brothers P300 with second HDD but I didnt use HDD bay. I have just fixed second HDD to stay in the same position with piece of plastic so that HDD will stay in place.
You can also contact Toshiba service and ask for help. I am pretty sure they have such HDD bays used before and can imagine you can get one.
Visit also eBay/notebooks and check for Toshiba hard drive caddy. I saw several bays there.

  • HP dv 7 4050ea HDD caddy search

    Hello
I know that this has been asked a few times, but the sheer number of different caddies for different ranges of HP laptops out there scares me, so I decided to ask.
I want to add a second hard drive to my dv7 4050ea Pavillion notebook. However, I am unsure as to which caddy models are compatible. The best match I have found yet is this:
    http://uk.eetnordic.com/product.aspx?id=KIT340&path=MicroStorage-2nd-HDD-Caddy-Cable-for-HP
I am still not sure if it is the correct one though, and I do not know the site so I am reluctant.
So, can someone here possibly help me find out which caddy I need to buy, and if possible, point me towards a trustworthy site which ships to the UK or to Greece? Would it be possible to order this part directly from HP, and if so, where?
    Thanks.
    This question was solved.

    Hello
Such HDD caddy that you mean you can get from an authorized service provider. They sell all original Toshiba spare parts and there you can buy one.
By the way, here you can search for nearest authorized service provider:

  • NewModeUS HDD Caddy

I bought this HDD Caddy from NewModeUS to put an additional drive in the UltraBay adapter. There is a clear plastic layer with a tab on the end over the side of the caddy that has the perforated holes in it. Usually I've seen this tab to help pull the hard drive out of it's slot in a computer but I haven't seen it completely cover the perforated holes of the caddy before.
Anyone know if I should leave the plastic layer on the caddy or not? Will it effect the temp of the drive?
