T430: Win 7 total crash - safe mode unstable, recovery environment gone

Hi everybody,
I've had my T430 since November and have been dual-booting Win 7 64bit and Ubuntu since then. I'm booting both OSs off of a Crucial M4 SSD and all my data sits in the drive caddy on the original HDD.
A couple of days ago, the windows partition just decided it didn't want to part of this world anymore. I've made no major changes to the system, but after selecting Windows 7 in the boot loader I was met with a BSOD for a fraction of a second and then reboot.
Ubuntu works fine and still recognizes everything, which leads me to assume that nothing's wrong with the SSD itself - it failed the SMART test, but that apparently doesn't really carry any weight with SSDs.
Now, I used the Lenovo-issued "Windows Recovery Environment" to let the system repair itself. That took all night, so I went to bed. Next morning I was greeted by the Win7 login screen, but after entering my credentials the system got stuck in a sort of "loading loop". I forcefully shut down the system and tried to get into Safe Mode. While that works, the system is ULTRA sluggish, everything takes for ever and I've been running Malwarebytes on the Win7 boot partition for the last four hours, which is a lot longer than I would expect it to take. CPU usage is around 0%.
What gives?
At this point I'd like to either return to the "Windows 7 Recovery Environment" or completely re-install the OS, but here's the catch: The Recovery Environment is gone, completely gone. When I select it's entry in the boot loader, Win 7 boots up. The Recovery partition itself is still there, but it seems to be unbootable.
What is happening? Can I download a recovery DVD somewhere? Should I call CS? I'm very confused.
Edit: About the recovery partition - I'm fairly certain that Ubuntu sees all the data and files on there, but Win Safe Mode thinks there is nothing at all on there. I can't double check at the time since I want malwarebytes to finish whatever it is doing.

  • Can't boot to safe mode or recovery

    Hi
I was watching a video in Quicktime, with a few other videos paused and some pictures open in the background. I got a facetime call, so I paused the video and took the call. After hanging up, I maximised the video and attempted to play. My machine pretty much locked up (spinning wheel) although for a few minutes I could switch into an application, at which point that application would also freez
After a few minutes I did a forced shutdown with the power key. I then went through a series of unusable boots which got to various stages before locking up and requiring another forced reboot
    1) User selection screen, mouse couldn't move
    2) User selection screen, managed to input most of my password before lockup
    3) Apple logo and spinning dial
At this point I realised it may be breaking when it tries to re-open the same video/pictures/browser windows etc as were open on the last boot, so stopped trying to boot normally
    4) Attempted to enter safe mode holding shift, got a "No Smoking" style grey logo (without the cigarette, obviously) with a spinning wheel
    5) Repeat of 4, in case I just held shift at the wrong time
    6 onwards) A white screen
I've tried holding shift to enter safe mode, and Cmd+R to enter recovery. I even tried Cmd+shift+P+R as it was suggested elsewhere.
    suggest
Any ideas? My next attempt will probably be to swap my old HDD back in - I replaced it with an SSD 6 months ago - in case the SSD has had an issue.

    Further info
I've swapped the old HDD back into the machine, and now I get an Apple Logo with spinning wheel. I still can't boot into safe mode nor recovery
The SSD is Mavericks, the HDD is Lion, I believe, possibly Mountain Lion

  • New version installed,  XP crashes ; Safe Mode not loading

Tried to buy new song, iTunes said had to get latest version. Installed latest version, restarted laptop. Connected online and started iTunes. Store said no internet connection. Went to apple.com to trouble shoot. All looked OK. Shut down teh laptop. Started laptop again later, and screen just went black after Windows tried to load. Tried to restart in safe mode, but that wouldn't start either..... just a list of files flashed by kinda like a DOS mode window, but no prompt ...... just hung there.
    Any ideas beside reloading Windows?

  • I can't start my MacBook in safe mode or recovery mode

I have a 2009 MacBook pro (bought in August), I am running Mavericks on it  Not entirely sure the exact patch. Last night it froze up on me out of the blue. I was able to move the mouse but wasn't able to click anything, open applications or even pull up the force quit window. The cursor was replaced by the psychedelic pinwheel. I turned off my computer by holding down the power button. When I went to turn it back on the Apple logo appeared with a loading bar. After the bar was about 50% of the way through the logo and status bar were replaced by a prohibitory sign. I then tried to boot in safe mode and got the same results. I have also tried to boot from the recovery drive. I held down the option key (the cmd+R method doesn't seem to do anything) and selected the recovery drive but received the same results. I have also tried to boot up from an external harddrive with some time machine backups and received the same results. I do not have my copy of the install disc on me but  waiting to borrow a copy to try and boot from the cd. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what you did to resolve it. Or if anyone has any idea what the is causing the issue.
Thank you for your time. Apologies for any grammatical errors. I am typing this from my phone.

Note that Install DVDs are model specific so you can only use one from a MBP that is the exact model as yours.  Otherwise the disk will not work.  Duplicate Leopard disks may be obtained from Apple Customer service.  You will have to provide them with the serial number of the MBP (on the bottom) and there is a charge.
Based on the symptoms that you describe, your internal HDD has failed and will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

Hey, any help?  My 24" iMac won't boot.  I only get a white screen when turning on.  It won't open in safe or recovery mode.  Any suggestions?

If you can't boot from your installer DVD, then take it in for service.

  • Impossible to Update Antivirus Definition in Safe mode (onekey recovery press)

I have an Idea Pad S12, the first months i was able to update my definition of Norton in One key recovery mode. However my 90 days Norton internet Security has expired under Window and i have install PCtools Internet Security in place of Norton. Better price quality ratio. However after that, I am no sure if this is a coincidence but I am not anymore able to update the definitions. It run for 30min after he said he was not able to load it. The program run with the old definition (2007) not the last one I have download week ago. Then or is a Virus who is able to modified the Lenovo Oneley recovery program or is a matter of Norton license. What should I do, reinstall Norton Antivirus One Key recovery program or (all program) or download some Norton definitions and copy it somewhere (I could not find).
I find out tha in this mode I am able to find better where are virus, than under window where scanning show no problems .
    Could someone help me!!!

    Hello,
Have you checked with PC Tools' technical support to determine why PC Tools Internet Security is not downloading updates?  Perhaps there is a non-malware-related reason for this.

  • T510, thinkpad display not present unless in safe mode

    Odd situation.
The notebook display itself does not work in WIndows (Win7 64).  Boot to safe mode, BIOS, recovery etc it's there and works fine.  But partway through booting up in "normal" mode the notebook LCD goes blank.
    An external LCD works fine.
Going to graphics options, there is no option for the notebook display.  In device manager, and enabling display of disconnected devices the Thinkpad LCD does show up as a disconnected device.
Again, booting to safe mode, BIOS setup or Thinkpad recovery the notebook LCD works just fine.  Just not in Windows 7 normal mode.
Uninstalling the Intel video driver resolves this, reinstalling it brings the problem right back.  Also have installed the latest version directly from Intel's site to no avail.
I should note that Fn-F7 brings up the menu, but changes nothing.

Doing a factory restore fixed the problem, but now I have just heard about a customer that had the exact same problem occur. On the same model machine.
Open a command prompt as administrator then run "sfc /scannow". If the issue is a corrupted system file this should fix it.
    From the MS support site:
Some commands that you can run using Command Prompt might require elevated or administrative privileges. To run these commands, you can use the Run as administrator command.
To run Command Prompt as an administrator
    Click the Start button .
In the search box, type command prompt.
In the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  • When I open Firefox, even in safe mode, it causes my Windows 7 64-bit to totally crash and I get that blue screen of death =(. This has happened suddenly on Nov 16, 2010. I had been running Firefox on Windows 7 64-bit with no problems previously. Help?

I have had Windows 7 64 bit for the past year and have run Firefox with no problem. It was the most problem free of the three browsers including IE and Chrome.
I have a Vista side where I run my online backup and did so yesterday. Went on Firefox. No Problem.
Today I booted into the Windows 7 side. Seemed to boot up okay. Until I opened Firefox. Suddenly, my whole computer crashed, windows shut down and that bluescreen popped up. I restarted normally. Same thing. I restarted in safe-mode. Couldn't find any problems. Went back to regular mode. Started FF. Boom crash.
Back to safe mode. Did a system restore. Back to regular startup. Didn't help. Attempting to open FF crahed windows.
So back to safe mode. Started Firefox. Crashed the whole computer and same blues screen.
So I uninstalled FF. Reinstalled FF. It still makes Windows crash.
So now I am on IE :P

See below -- the way I asked the question the first time may not be clear. This post was a goof but I can't figure out how to delete it

  • Firefox won't open, error msg = can't find profile; deleted all app.data to rid new Win 7 Total Security virus - tried both v 4.0 & v 3.6 (now no error msg either). Can't open profile manager, can't open safe mode. pls help

My mother's computer was infected with the new "Win 7 Total Security" virus (apparently a fake antivirus program) - corrupted real av. To remove, we followed online advice to delete everything in AppData, for all programs, plus some other stuff. We moved it all to a flashdrive for safety, but after successfully removing virus, likewise cleaned & reformatted flashdrive. This apparently deleted Firefox profile(s), and after uninstalling & reinstalling, Firefox still won't open - I can't create a new profile. With v 4.0, I get an error message about not being able to find the profile. Found advice on how to open profile manager, but it won't open. Found reference to version 4 dispensing with profile manager, so tried installing version 3.6 again; still won't open, still can't open profile manager, but now no error message at all.

THANX for the reply cor-el. I've never had a problem using just "firefox -p", but i did use the full path like you advised after i read the profile manager article here before i posted my question. Unfortunately it didn't work. I've backed up all 3 profiles from the "%appdata% profile" file, and also from my remaining main profile that i'm on right now. I decided i'm going to uninstall ff3.6.28 & upgrade to "firefox 11" this weekend and hopefully create the other 2 profiles along with my main one. I do like in the newer versions of FF the tabs on top like googles chrome because it gives you more room on the page. I also like some other features too, but the main reason i kept my old version both times is because the newer versions didn't seem to load pages any faster than version 3.6.28. I'm not going to worry about some themes/personas not being compatible with ff11. I'll find some new ones. I think when i tried "ff9" awhile back along with my current version, i just deleted the shortcut that the article said to create on the desktop and still had all 3 profiles & no problems like i have now. In case your curious, the article on how to create more than one version of firefox at the same time was on the site "Dottech.org>[How To] Tip: Install multiple versions of Firefox to test before upgrading to latest release". It works but i obviously did something different this time that caused this problem. THANX again for your time/help, i do appreciate it.

  • Since the last upgrade, FF no longer runs on my laptop! I get the crash report box but it never restarts upon pressing that option. I can't try the safe mode or the other self-help options because no FF browser window opens.

FF worked fine before I accepted the latest update just a few days ago. My friend who lives far away said that she also has problems since the upgrade. When I click on the thumbnail to open FF no window opens, all I see is the crash report. Without the window I can't try the self-helps or give a crash ID (from what I understand from reading the options). None of the options in the crash report restore the browser. When I click on one, the box just pops right back up.
Other than general slowness of my system and some possible hacking which got someone into my paypal account this week, I've had no other computer issues. (I've changed my email address with PP & changed my email passwords in case someone is accessing my machine through my email...I'm not very computer literate...I don't believe this can happen, yet no other options were presented).
Because my friend also experienced this crash issue I think this is totally related to the upgrade & what ever it did to my computer such that FF no longer loads.
Please give me steps to fix this issue without FF running--all the self-help techniques seem to assume that I can run FF, get a browser window, utilize the links therein. I can't get a window open at all!

    YAY!! I have Safe mode!!
    um, now what?

    Hi Max,
Congratulations, at least you made a stab at solving the problem. I think a lot of users used to glance at that KB article ([[firefox crashes]]) and give up trying!
Hopefully the crash instructions will be further modified soon, (some of us consider the following is an [/kb/Firefox%20crashes/discuss/1855 omission] that needs correcting) have a look at this article for an explanation of how to get the crash ID from your OS even without using firefox:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Location_of_crash_reports
The XP OS is likely to use smoke and mirrors to make it look like you have a totally
separate installation of firefox for each account, but normally you have the one set of (most) program files, and then for firefox separate [[profiles]]. So this indicates the problem is likely to be in the profile of the problem account, or down to a plugin, malware or other issue relating to that account. <br/>(I note you have already scanned for malware with MSE, that should detect a particular trojan that is a top cause of firefox 6 crashes)
If you create a new clean profile in that account hopefully it will solve the crash problem, you can then address the issue of copying settings, bookmarks. passwords etc back. BUT before attempting that ensure that you disable all plugins, ([[safe mode]] does not disable plugins) if you have not already done so. Some plugins may not show up in Firefox's list, you may need to look at the OS program lists.
I note you mention banking, a particular utility ''IDvault'' (I think Comcast supply it) has been causing crashes. Are you using IDvault ? <br/> (IDvault should be fixed soon bug684748; version 1.0.627 may have been fixed, but standalone version 5.9.627 has not yet been fixed )

  • Firefox crashes constantly after about 5 min (not in Safe mode)

Basic info: using Firefox 14, was working fine until i came back from vacation, fired up my PC, and updated 3 things, Adobe Flash, Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit), and AMD Catalyst control center with the new 12.8 update, then restarted.
Have slowly been attempting to pin down the cause. Uninstalled Flash, firefox still crashes. Tried moving the Mozilla folder to desktop so I could simulate a reset, firefox crashed anyway, so i put the old folder back.
Read some troubleshooting pages on the firefox page and went down the list making sure all was updated and then tried running in Safe mode. So far no crash and we are going on 15 min here, the best I've seen so far.
Note: Just realized my Java version was out of date, uninstalled the old versions and installed the new version. Will see if this helps.
Note 2: Nope, Firefox is still crashing regularly. Java was not the issue. Didn't think so, but was hoping....

Hi edasvangen, try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
(WIN) orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced<br>
(MAC) Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If you restart Firefox, is the issue resolved (or at least greatly improved)?

    Dear All,
My firefox (version 23 on win 7) crashed when upload file on our internal web based application. This happen on two PC, even in firefox safe mode the problem still exist. So, my first conclusion the problem nothing to do with extension. here the crash ID https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/81220865-36c0-4e10-a484-6d27e2131023 and https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/86d2b779-9730-4d2c-b276-a86d42131023. I wonder if this happen because jquery modul in our web based application. But when I tried on my laptop, the problem dissapear. I tried to replicate same situation on different server, I mean I put the exact same application source to other server, never meet the same problem. Thus, I suspect may be it related to antivirus that installed in our network which is kaspersky. I am googling, never meet the clue.
If you meet the same problem, please help me.

The crashes are a problem with the winhadnt.dll file (OCular Agent from TEC Solutions Limited) as you can see in the crash reports.

Last week Firefox updated itself and there was a java update too. Since then I have been unable to access google maps within my browser, every time I get the grey background and then FF crashes. Have tried clearing cookies, safe mode, disabled the few plugins installed and a complete reinstall... same problem.
    Totally fed up with this

OK tried with a new profile - same problem :-(

  • Why do all the versions after 3.16.3 not have the safe mode, it is required because they crash continually

All the later versions of Firefox crash regularly, this is annoying. We can't update because there isn't a "Safe Mode" option to prevent this happening, or is there ? We are still using version 3.6.13 in safe mode to prevent the annoyance.
PS Explorer doesn't crash all the time like this. You are obviously aware of the crashes because of the sarcastic notices that pop up apologising for ther incovenience.
