T430s Build Quality Versus a T400

I'm considering moving up to a T430s from a T400. I've been very happy with the durability and build quality of my T400 and would like to know how it compares to a T430s. How does the T430s compare in terms of build to a T400? I realize it doesn't have the magnesium lid roll-cage but rather the newer CFRP lid roll cage, etc. I am not a gamer and would only use this laptop for typical business use and web development and design. I'm unable to see one in person. Thanks.

I've had mine for a couple months and would recommend it. However, it is not perfect and as someone who came from using Macs, I can say that even a low-end plastic Macbook is slightly better built all-around than the T430s-- Although the T430s feels more solid, it has gaps and other small problems that don't exist on Macbooks.
Internally, I think the T430s is quite a bit better than a current model Macbook... Its faster and runs cooler. It also has much better expansion than most other laptops in its class (especially if you get the version with Thunderbolt, which is basically a fast PCI connector in serial form).
Don't worry about the screendoor effect. That was from a batch of LG panels and those are no longer used by Lenovo as far as we can tell. I bought my T430s in January and it has an AUO screen that looks pretty good and I think that is the screen they are using as standard now. Lenovo did misfire on the color profile they included with Windows, but loading one of the substitute profiles from the forum rectifies that problem.
So the only remaining 'weakness' of the T430s seems to be battery life, and that can be helped by adding an ultrabay battery.

5800 Really Bad build quality

Well I am now on my 3rd 5800 and they all seem to have really bad build quality. As others have mentioned there is a big gap along one side of the phone (top right hand side running down past the volume buttons) and in the dark light leaks out through the gap
Come on - how can anything like this be put out to the general public - this is a serious issue. If you can get one side of the phone to close properly then why didn't you get the other side to do the same?
As a product designer I know that during the design stage there are several prototypes made, parts checked etc - how could this be passed as ok?
I am seriously considering ditching the 5800 all together - for something that Nokia are classing as a premium model they really need to re-consider its quality.

This is really annoying me as well. This phone cost me a lot of money and it's the worst build quality/design I've ever seen.
People talk about dust getting in through the gap but what worries me is that it is much more likely to let in moisture! I've checked with Vodafone and moisture damage is NOT covered by their warranty. So unless Nokia admit that it's a manufacturing fault you'll have to pay for the repair youself.
Of course,
1) If their wasn't a gap down the side of the case water wouldn't get in so it wouldn't need repairing!
2) If the phone gets water damaged it's almost certainly going to be classified as "beyond economical repair"!
Come on Nokia, admit it's a manufacturing fault, recall all the phones and repair them free of charge.

Blackberry Torch 9810 battery life and build quality

I'm going to be getting a new Blackberry soon and I wanted to know what the 9810 was like. Can someone please tell me how it compares the the other Blackberry 7 devices, especially the battery life and the build quality of the handset?? I'd also like to know what the call quality of the handset is like, through the earpiece and the loudspeaker.

I use twitter all day long, facebook set to evey 3 hours, and have 11 BBM groups.
Usage is tough to measure as there are many factors. I can go a whole day or mabye need to change once during the day when too active on it.
my 9800 not 9810, lasted me very well and the slider was still like new. it is built well. I sold it to a friend so i could have a 9810.

Build quality question

The left side of my MacBook (the side with all the ports) seems a little loose to me, especially toward the front of the machine. If I press it, it will deflect inward a little bit and creak. G4s by comparison are built like tanks it seems. Should I be concerned about this or is this just the normal build quality of a MacBook?

yeah, they all do that. Why on earth would Apple choose to NOT use real screws in the area that receives the most use, i.e. where all the ports are? The screws there are just cosmetic to balance it out with the right side.

Macbook vs Macbook pro for ruggedness/build quality/toughness/knocks etc.

Question is about the ruggedness and durability of the Apple models and how they stand up to knocks in the field.
Apple do two models and I want to clarify the differences in build quality. I'll compare the old and replacement models and would appreciate feedback.

If you need something truely rugged, a Panasonic Toughbook is a great, although expensive, way to go. I have a CF-29 and I have dropped it in my driveway with no damage. Heck, I have even put it on the floor and stomped on it with the lid closed to show my friends' it's durability. I work in construction, so I thought I would need something rugged. Truth be know though, my MBP would get me by just fine--especially since I can use XP on it. Drawbacks to the Panasonic? EXPENSIVE!! Oh--and it only runs Windows!! LOL!!

Build quality of the C2D's?

Just a quick question for current C2D MBP owners.
I have had pretty bad experiences with the previous generation of MBP (Core duo). The lid closes unevenly meaning to say that the gap for 1 side is significantly wider than the other.
Hows the build quality now?
Oh and about the downclocking of the x1600 display card. Is it running full now since there is no heat issue will the C2D running cooler?

I don't believe it is running as fast as it can in the 15". If I'm remembering correctly the core clock frequency was at about 400 MHz, and the memory was at about 445 MHz. (I could very well be wrong, so don't take my word on it)
The "max" specs (without over-clocking) for the card are 475 MHz for both core clock frequency and memory. Again, I'm not positive on this.

Build quality differences ?

Are the later models ie 2010 models better built than the earlier models. I just bought a jan2010 8900 and it seems a lot better built than the one I had last year , or is it just me ?

I don't recall any differences however, I've only had one and it's from january 2009. Everything is made in China so build quality is not that great across the entire line of BB's. It's adequate but not exceptional.

Build Quality.

Am I the only person who has noticed that my older Macbook is of a far superior build quality than the newest one bought this year? The keypad for one thing on my old one feels springy and rebust - the plastic on the casing doesn't have any sharp edges. The new one feels more Emelio than Jobs!

Anyway, it's not for me to judge. The mobile provider has to make that determination for warranty repair. You could appeal that within your provider, I suppose, but like I said, many carriers will consider that physical damage.
Since it's so fairly new, I agree with you though, doesn't seem like physical damage to me.

Iphone 5S Build Quality, iPhone 5S Verarbeitungsqualität...

Mir ist aufgefallen das Leider bisher jedes einzelne Gerät welches ich betrachten durfte, Verarbeitungs bzw. Hardwarefehler hatte!
Habe schon ein dutzend Nagelneue verschweißte boxen geöffnet und die Geräte akribisch untersucht, neben dem On/Off/ sleep Wackelknopf den 100% alle hatten gab es auch keins wo ich sagen konnte ja das ist ein Perfekt verarbeitetes Exemplar! Die meisten Fehler und meiner Meinung nach Grund für Ausschuss waren:
Abstehende nicht eben zum Alu Körper eingesetzte Display Einheit, auch gerne oft knackend...
Staub unter Glaß/Kameras
Leichte dellen auf der Rückseite des Gerätes (sieht man gut vor hellem licht/sonne), aber auch gerne macken im Alu (rücken, seiten, Laut- und leise Knöpfen sowie gern am sim tray)
Gruselige spaltmaße am Simtray
Gelbstich im LCD
Pixelfehler
Backlight Bleed
Neuerdings bei aktuellen Batches Gelber streifen/Verfärbung auf dem oberen Teil des Display... Genau wie beim neuen IPad Air...
Nicht mittig sitzende Lade ports sowie Kopfhörer Buchsen.
Mindestens einen dieser Fehler hat jedes Gerät gehabt! Manchmal sogar alle zusammen... :(
Bitte nicht falsch verstehen, ich bin bisher sehr zufrieden mit meinen Apple handys gewesen (3G, 3GS, 4 sowie 4S) fast alle waren top! Klar bei so einem oft in massen gefertigten Produkt "kann" immer "mal" was nicht 100% stimmen aber doch nicht bei jedem einzelnen von mir untersuchten Gerät? Das ist doch nicht mehr lustig, schon garnicht bei so einer hohen summe die ich gezahlt habe dafür?
Aber schön auf der Internetseite oder im Apple store App Perfekte Geräte abbilden und von höchster Präzision schrieben. Im falle der 5/5S reihe die reinste Fars, sorry!
Zum Glück habe ich es direkt von Apple gekauft... Garnicht auszumalen was für ein stress ich "ZUSÄTZLICH" mit Providern oder Elektromärkten hätte in meinem Fall.
Das verdirbt einen so richtig die Laune an der Marke.

Edit Build Quality permission not properly restricting access

At the top-most level of the Build security hierarchy, I have only one specific TFS Group that is set to "allow" for the Edit Build Quality permission. Everyone else is set to "Not Set". From my understanding, only those in that one group
should then be able to change the build quality. However, it seems that anyone can actually do so.
Is something not set up right? I'm very familiar with TFS permissions and hierarchical inheritance and everything looks like it should be working as intended, but it's not.
Does anyone have any ideas?

You changed the Edit build quality = Not set in your Contributors group and other default groups? Or you added the Contributors group and other default groups in a specific group, then set the Edit build quality = Not set in this specific group?
In the first scenario, you needn’t deny the Edit build quality permission in Contributors group and other default groups, just set Edit build quality = Not set in your Contributors group and other default groups, then the users which in Contributors group(or
other default groups) will cannot edit build’s quality, I confirmed this in my TFS 2013 Update 4 environment.
In the second scenario, although you set the Edit build quality = Not set in this specific group, but the Contributors group has the Edit build quality = Allow permission by default, so the users which in Contributors group can edit build’s quality. You
need set Edit build quality = Deny on this specific group to deny this permission for the member of groups.

T440p poor build quality and very loud fans

Just received my T440p and the build quality is a bit dodgy - it has quite sharp badly finished plastic to the edges.
More annoying however is the fan which is very noisy - it seems to be more vibration of the bottom panel than the fan itself - has anyone else had similar issues?

When I received my 440p, the fan was also noisy and produced vibrations. I called the warrenty provider for replacement and the fan was replaced without complications. Now the fan is rather silent. Of course I hear the fan if the system is under load but I basically donot hear the fan durring office applications.

T400 general build quality? Did I get unlucky or is this normal?

I bought a T400 in September 2008, so just about 2 years ago. I was really pumped because of the Lenovo reputation for good laptops and I like the way they look. I got to customize it with switchable graphics etc.
Well right from the start I had some issues. My fingerprint reader wasn't working correctly. It would sometimes not wake up from sleep properly or something and be unavailable, or take over a minute to become ready (effectively making it useless). Well I called and got the palm rest replaced right away. The customer service was very good and quick.
Then my headphone port cracked for no reason, other than plugging in headphones. It still works but doesn't hold onto the plug anymore so it comes out easily. This is part of the MB and could not be replaced easily without sending in my whole laptop for repairs which would take a couple weeks. I couldn't do without my computer that long because I was a student and needed it everyday, and it wasn't that major of an issue, more of a stupid annoyance.
Then my disk drive started not reading discs all the time. It wasn't really a big issue, just had to try a few times. But it got worse. By the time it got pretty much unusable (can't even install Windows from DVD, have to use a USB), my comp was out of warranty.
Most recently my computer started shutting off randomly. Happened once, then again, then more frequently. I noticed that it happened when the CPU was under load and noticed I was getting a Critical Thermal Event error. So installed TPFancontrol and made sure my fan was working, and it was. But my temps were very high, they would be around 75 idle and go up to mid-high 90's under load!!! I took my computer apart and removed the fan heat sink. It looked like the thermal compound was put on very poorly and there was barely any at all on the actual CPU. I cleaned it off the CPU and GPU and reapplied some AS5. Now my temperatures are back down to 55-60 idle and below 80 under load.
My question is, are other people experiencing these kind of quality issues with the T400 or other newer Lenovo laptops? I know that Lenovo took over IBM and from what I thought, the quality was the same, at least the first year or two. But with these kind of issues I don't think I am likely to buy a Lenovo again. Unless my experience is abnormal.

Man, all those little things seem to add up over time...
Honestly, I've not seen any widespread comments on headphone jacks or the optical drive, so seems either that you've had some bad luck with individual components, or it's environmental. I've not seen optical drive issues specific to T400, but opticals in general don't do well in a dusty environment and it sounds like it was degrading over time. Have you tried a cleaning disk? Just a thought.
The thermal grease on all the fans and heat sinks are pre-applied as a matrix of little dots of exact spacing and diameter so that they spread out to a uniform film when installed. As it ages, the factory grease does seem to get hard, not specific to the T400 and generally not an issue. Arctic Silver or equiv does seem to work rather well if you have it apart- glad that lowered your temps. I assume you blew out the heat sinks with canned air while you were at it? They can accumulate an amazing amount of dust over time that can lead to overheating too.
Also, I assume you've applied all BIOS and driver updates? Sept 2008 was a fairly early build of the T400, so there have been a number of updates released. You sound pretty savvy, so you probably have, but just thought I'd mention it.

T400 build quality issue

Here it goes, I purchased my Lenovo T400 less than a month ago and have noticed the following defects
- Bottom of the screen basel there is a 2-3mm gap between the LCD and the plactic basel which is about 4 cm long
Dust started collecing not to mention there is a pieace of metal is showing as well.
- Base basel where the power botton is located along with volume bottons looks like it's buldged up, most likely
due to its size, meaning it's slightly too big.
- Keyboard, the left side sits higher than the right side not to mention when I type on it the whole left side seems to sink/move
So, with the laptop being less than 30 days old I called lenovo and opened up a service call. The rep was very polite and
recorded all my complaints. I was also told that he will order new parts and ship me an empty box so that I can ship it to
lenovo to repairs. Since then I've been getting phone calls everyday from lenovo rep asking additional question, the same questions everytime he called, to describe the defects. Finally, I got a phone call today from the same rep stating that
lenovo will not repair my laptop as it's too new for it to be a wear and tear issue!!!
I must say, this is my first and last purchase of the lenovo laptop and I will make an attempt to return it and get my money back.
So much for "best" support..

welcome to the club. There are a few of us in here with that. Though the 3G had the same problem but I never realy had that issue. It seems more apparent on the 3GS. I went through 5 already cause of different issues and all of them had this problem...Apple says as long as its in specifications functionaly it dont qualify for a replacement.

Build Quality on 5G 30GB iPod

I've just bought a black 30GB 5G ipod w/video and I've noticed a couple of things about it's quality. 2 things:-
A couple of minor "dents" across the top of the silver casing (where the headphone socket and hold switch are) - is this normal - but these minor suface dents look uniform - maybe part of the molding is where the "clips" are underneath the casing to hold in place?
Secondly, on the front, if you press slightly with your thumb just underneath the play button, right in the middle, (just underneath the clickwheel) I hear a slight click - is this normal? (almost like the front cover isn't quite attached solidly to the rest of the unit)
I've had previous generations of ipods with none of these build problems - they've been perfect.

I'm pretty sure I set it to automatic.
The "Manually manage music and videos" is UNCHECKED.
Is there anything else I could be doing wrong. This is so frustrating. I restored and resynced and everything too.
