T430s mSATA SSD cache and new SSD?

I just ordered a new T430s with a 500GB drive and the 16GB mSATA SSD cache.  A friend has now talked me in to replacing the 500GB drive with a Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD, though nothing has been purchased just yet.
My question is:  obviously its dumb to have a 16GB SSD cache sitting in front of another SSD, yes?  So, what are my options?  Can I repurpose the mSATA SSD for something else?  Should I just pull it out?
(And, yes, I should have thought of this before I placed my order.  Hindsight, right?)
Thanks for your ideas/help/instructions!
Best regards,
Charles

Hello and welcome,
You'll get a bunch of different opionions on this
If you're going with a big SSD, you might as well just remove the mSATA device.
I've taken a different approach with my T420.  Left the HDD in and installed a 256GB mSATA SSD.  The SSD holds the OS and the stuff that I want to be fast.  The HDD has less-frequently accessed data - and a backup of the SSD.
The HDD is set to spin down when inactive.  Saves power and noise.  Mostly the machine just runs off the SSD.

Z.

  • Ssd cache and hybrid drive

I am looking to order the HP 17t-j000 with 8GB of memory.  It offers both SSD cache and a Hybrid drive as options, and you can choose both.    Does it make sense to get both, or is this just redundant?   I

No the SSD cache drive with hybrid drive will outperform just the hybrid drive by quite a bit. You will get boot time performance close to a main SSD drive, but a main SSD drive would be even faster, particularly on data transfer.

  • 990FXA-GD65v2 and New SSD

I'm starting to pull my hair out over this because I'm not sure what's going on!
My system includes the 990FXA-GD65v2 on BIOS version 19.9, which it came with. I have two (2) x 2TB HDDs in a RAID 1 configuration for redundant data storage, and a single Samsung 840 Pro 250GB with the OS on it. I recently purchased a new Samsung 850 EVO 500GB to replace the 840 Pro that was constantly running low on space. With no requirement to retain the existing Windows 8.1 Pro operating system, I opted to load the operating system fresh. After installing the new SSD in place of the old one, I was able to see it in BIOS, as well as in the RAID controller (though it is set as a "Single Disk" like the previous SSD). However, I'm not able to see it in the Windows 8.1 Pro installation DVD.
Curious, I replaced my original SSD, and hooked the new SSD into another SATA port. Once booted into my original OS, I was unable to see the new SSD in device manager.
I also attempted to clone the old SSD to the new SSD using Acronis 2014 on a boot CD. The clone was successful, but on restart, the computer was not able to boot to the new SSD.
Both new and old SSDs are on the latest firmware. I attempted to provide the RAID driver for the board while trying to install Windows, even though the RAID 1 configuration shows up already, but the new SSD still does not show up.
    Help me!
Thank you so much in advance for any replies.

k.4 the version of the 990FXA-GD65 is compatible with the 990FXA-GD65V2?
the 990FXA-GD65 and 990FXA-GD65V2 are exactly the same the only difference is the V2 version shipped with a newer version of the VBIOS back when the FX CPU's first hit the market as the normal ones did not have a BIOS that supported them!
In essence they are the exact same product and use the exact same BIOS versions as each other the V2 just points out it will support a FX processor out the box!

  • Migrating Windows 8.1 from one SSD to a new SSD

I've been doing a bit of research, and I'd like to slightly upgrade my current system by purchasing a new case, CPU cooler, and SSD (as well as possibly a new CPU.)
I have heard warnings from people regarding cloning Windows onto an SSD (it won't be set up properly for an SSD, etc) but all of those warnings appear to be in the case of cloning Windows from an HDD to an SSD, not from an old SSD onto a new SSD (which is what I'll be doing.)
My question: Is it safe to clone windows from my current SSD onto a new one? (Samsung 840 Pro 256gb)
Would I run into any issues?
I want to avoid purchasing a new copy of windows, as well as completely reinstalling, because I have a lot of programs and frankly reinstalling Windows from scratch is a pain in the butt.

    Hi!
Even though it's a pain in the "you know what", the absolutely best thing to do is to reinstall the OS.
Since you are not chaning any components in the computer it's quite safe to clone the drive to another SSD, this since you won't run ito any trouble with drivers and so on. So from that perspective you are good to go!
The problems that might occur is that data becomes corrupt when cloning the drive, so for this reason I allways recomend a fresh install.
But as mentioned, since you won't be changing hardware or anything, no new drivers needs to be added or removed so even though it pains me to say it, cloning the drive is an option.
If the data becomes corrupted, then you can reinstall the OS.

  • Help With MAC Mini Server and New SSD

    Hey Guys,
I just got a Mac Mini Server. I swapped out one HD for a new SSD. A Crucial One.
I am booting in recovery mode and it only sees one HD and says it is 1.5 TB, (1 tb regular and the new SSD is 512)
I just want to run osx on the SDD .. help

I'm unsure of the proper procedure as I'm not experienced dealing with Fusion Drive setups. If Disk Utility shows you have a 1.5 TB drive, then what do you see when you boot the computer and check disk drive space using Get Info? I know you can revert the volume you have back to standard format if you don't mind using the Terminal in your Utilities folder:
Open the Terminal and paste or enter the following at the prompt:
    diskutil list
Press RETURN. This will list for you the device information for your HDD. Here is an example of the output:
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *120.0 GB   disk1
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk1s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Yosemite                119.2 GB   disk1s2
       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk1s3
You want what you see at the top left - /dev/diskn, where n is the integer number. Then enter or paste at the prompt:
sudo diskutil cs revert /dev/diskn ; replace the n with the integer number found above.
Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen, so be careful typing. Press RETURN again. Wait until it completes the process which is when the prompt returns.
Given the potential danger when using the Terminal in this way, please be sure you have first made a reliable backup. Better safe than sorry.

  • What is the best way to move Lightroom 3 from my old ssd to my new ssd?

I recently installed a new and larger ssd on my computer.  When I attempted to clone my old ssd, it corrupted my old windows 7 on the original ssd and left me with a blue screen version on my new ssd.  So after reformatting the new ssd and completing a clean install of windows 8 I am ready to move my lightroom 3 over.  I want to do this without losing all my work on my photos and I am not enthused with cloning my old ssd as it did not work and left me with days of frustration.  Please help with the best way to accomplish this.
    Thanks,
    Dan Rafferty

Install Lr 3 to your new SSD using the original cd.
You can also downlad version 3.6 from here: Adobe - Lightroom : For Windows
Then copy your catalog, previews, and images over from the old disk, and make sure everything goes to the same location as on the old disk.

  • How to use A USB enclosure to transfer data from my old SSD to my new SSD?

So i have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro with a 120 gb ssd, and i recently bought 240gb Kingston HyperX 3K SSD(With the upgrade kit). In the kit i have the USB enclousre with a CD for transferring my data from the old SSD to the newer. The problem is i got no idea how to do it. I tried youtubeing it but most of them were on a Windows PC. Can somebody Please tell me how to transfer my data using the USB enclousre.
    Thank you for your time.

Put the new drive in the external enclosure. Connect it to the computer. Partition and format the drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-R keys until the Main Utilities menu appears on the screen..
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external SSD drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
         1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         3. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         4. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external SSD drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • SSD cache on windows 8.1

Hi, I do have windows 8.1 update 1 on my lenovo thinkpad edge e540 (20C6003QMC) which has 16GB SSD cache and I'd like to ask since express cache is not supported on windows 8.x how can i get it working? Thanks

Okay, I got mine to install.
Under the Start menu it showed iCloud 3.1 as still being installed although it doesn't show up in the add / remove programs.  So what I decided to do was manually uninstall it.  I found the directory where iCloud was installed, which in my case was:
    c:\program files (x86)\Common Files\Apple
Close out iCloud if it's still running in the taskbar, I used the Task Manager to close it.
I renamed the Apple folder to Apple.bak and then closed out explorer.  I re-ran the iCloud 4.x install program and it went through the entire installation without fail this time.  After which it'll prompt for you to reboot once the installation completes.

  • How should a SSD cache be partitioned upon installation?

I know there are various wiki pages for creating a bcache, but none of them seem to go into detail about how they should initially be partitioned.
In my case, lsblk shows an sda partition (1 and 2) which is my live USB stick, a sdb partition which is my SSD cache, and a sdc (1 and 2) which is my machines main HD partition.
Do I need to clean my SSD partition or should I just leave it alone? The wikis don't seem to address the situation as if the user has yet to install arch yet.

vixsomnis wrote:If you're still stuck on this, use $(wipefs -a /dev/sdbX) on the partition, then use $(make-bcache --wipe-bcache -C /dev/sdbX). There's nothing in the wiki about this, but the tool itself provides some help when it encounters an error.
Alternatively, you could try to use the Security Erase feature of the SSD if it supports it.  This will effectively zero out the entire drive.  Then you can go back and try getting bcache working again and not have to worry about lingering superblocks from old filesystems.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SS … l_clearing
I like to use this when I need to clear out an SSD because it tends to be super fast.  It is also amazingly easy to use as well (you just need hdparm).

  • Copying Arch install to new SSD

My current Arch install is on an SSD, which is 2 1/2 years old. I'm about to purchase a faster (and larger) SSD to replace it, and reuse the old one in a home server. Is this the best strategy to move my install?
    - Do a file level backup of everything to be safe
    - dd the entire old SSD to the new SSD (dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb for example)
    - Resize with gparted
Anything wrong with that? Are there any performance or stability reasons to use another method? I've been reading over the SSD wiki, and clearly there is a lot more information available on optimizing SSD performance now. I was going on random blog posts when I set up the current install in March 2010.

  • 16GB mSATA SSD Cache

I recently purchased a new HP Envy 700-300z desktop computer. All is well except for the following. With the purchase, I had the 16GB mSATA SSD Cache disk installed to speed up the computer. I could not locate any info in the instructions and was looking for third party software that was attached to this drive, like scandisk or conduit the owner of the software. Was there a software installed and if so where is it located or any other info that you may have.

  • Does my t430s have the ssd cache that I ordered it with?

I've been reading a little bit about some folks who have the SSD cache drive but for some reason, don't have the ExpressCache software installed.  But I'm actually trying to figure out if I even have the physical SSD drive.  In Windows Explorer, I see the C drive, the DVD RW drive and the Lenovo_Recovery drive (which I'm assuming is just partitioned off the hard drive).  Looking at the Device Manager I only see the Hitachi hard drive.  Does this mean Lenovo messed up and didn't install my SSD Cache drive?

So, how painful is it to get this fixed, since I paid for it?  Am i going to have to send the bloody thing back to lenovo?  i can't believe they'd be so shoddy with their manufacturing as to forget something like that.
Mailing you the drive would be the smart thing to do.  Someone here will have to chime in on the proper procedure for enabling the caching after the storage device is installed.  I believe they are just using Intel RapidStart.
See the Intel RapidStart User Guide at http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/rapid_start_technology_user_guide.pdf

  • New SSD installed and Performance Problems

    Greetings all!
I just reinstalled my workstation with a new Intel X25-V SATA solid-state drive 40GB on which I installed only Win7 and CS5 and, with my i7980x processor and 24GB of ram, I was expecting some super crazy performance (my Windows Performance Number is 7,7 out of 7,9 possible) and... my Premiere Pro is now rendering painfully slow... Everything else is fine in the computer...
Real time viewing of the video, when not rendered, is impossible or extremely pixelized (it was just fine before with my HDD).
    Any help is welcome!!
    Thanks,
    Etienne

SSDs make great OS/program drives, but they can be pretty weak for CS5, especially at the price/generation point of Intel's X25-V series. Regarding why are SSDs poor for CS5, it is an issue with slow performance in writing.
Put everything on your HD except "media cache DB" (CS5 projects, media, media cache, output, etc.) and you should be fine. BTW, you have a strong CPU and lots of RAM, so your hardware would be much better balanced if you were to use a total of 4 7200 RPM SATA drives: 2 in RAID 0 for projects and media; 2 in RAID 0 for media cache and render outputs. Check out the "hardware" forum for LOTs of hardware discussion.

  • Proper way to migrate OS to new SSD with mSSD cache Intel RST installed ?

    Hi everyone,
    I have a laptop hp envy dv6 7300 CTO.
it has  750 GB SATA  with 32 GB  mSSD for Intel RST cache now.
Right now,  I am purchasing 500 GB SSD to upgrade my HDD so I guess I do not need intel RST to work with my new SSD.
I am not sure about how to disable intel RST cache properly (without damaging OS)
    I think
    1.  Backup my important data
    2.  Disable Intel RST in laptop BIOS  , just change from <enable> to <disable>  and hope system will resolve everything.
    3.  make sure system run in AHCI mode, check boot order
    4.  Boot to windows , make sure everything work fine (should see new 32 GB drive)   uninstall intel RST driver stuff.
    5.  Clone HDD to new SSD
    6.  install SSD to laptop   , set boot order
Am I correct about process ?
