T430s neither boots, nor enters BIOS anymore

Hi all,
A quite tricky challenge:
I got a new T430s a few days ago. It worked nicely, with Windows 7. I started working on it for some days, with many reboots. I could also enter into BIOS. Now I created a backup image of the Windows-7 partition, and the partition called like "sysdrv", using an Acronis TrueImage boot CD. This went fine, the system booted from CD, and created a backup to an external USB HD. After having finished, I closed the Acronis program. Since then, the T430s doesn't boot anymore. It hangs with the following message:
"Initializing Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.3.81; PXE 2.1 Build 091 (WfM 2.0)". The cursor is blinking underneath.
I tried pressing ENTER at the beginning, which works. But then in the menu, I can select either F1 to enter BIOS, or F12 to choose temporary boot device, but both options lead me to the same text as above, with blinking cursor. The option F10 to run diognostics works, and doesn't find any error.
We tried with another bootable CD, no effect. The optical drive quickly sounds, but after some seconds the system hangs with the same message.
So, in conclusion: I cannot boot Windows 7, I cannot enter BIOS, I cannot change the boot order. Even Ctrl-Alt-Delete doesn't work to reboot. I can only press the power button for 2 seconds to shut it down.
Thanks for any suggestions

I am guessing your Acronis backup you did was cloning the drive and not a full HD image to the external drive. If you clone and don't use advanced or responded incorrectly your original HD was modified by Acronis Trueimage. It may not longer be marked as an active boot partition and never boot again without fixing it.
As I recall the tools are on the boot CD and you should be able to fix it. NOTE: Window 7 partition is NOT the normal boot partition on Lenovo Win 7 systems. Its the "SYSTEM_DRV" Partition set as Active.
Good luck, you can call Acronis for help with their tools on fixing this and I would if you're not well versed in partitions and managing them. Once you screw it up its far harder and may be impossible to fix over the phone of via forum posts!!!

  • T61 at boot everytime enters BIOS (unable to skip BIOS)

    I have a T61 with Windows 7 64 bits installed,
T61 did work fine for several months untill last week,
but now when booting immediately after the message to enter BIOS press F1 there is a message entering BIOS setup and then BIOS windows appears, by pressing F10 or ESC Windows 7 starts without reporting problems,
apparently there are no errors reported and I am unable to understand why BIOS setup window appears,
I did several attempts to restore BIOS to default values etc. (hoping to avoid the reported problem) without success,
when booting T61 enters everytime the BIOS Windows and I have to press Esc or F10 to continue normal boot,
How can I restore the original behaviour (i.e. booting without entering BIOS windows) ?
Has someone experienced a similar problem and found a solution ?
    Thank you for help.

Have you checked the date and time to make sure they're correct?
They will enter bios if the date isn't set or if the cmos battery is bad, but I've never seen a T61 behave like this otherwise.

  • USB Keyboard not working at boot to enter BIOS (Neo2-LS 865PE)

    Hi,
I just upgraded to a new usb keyboard for my computer but it seems that I can't use it at boot time...When i was using the PS/2 KB I was able to enter bios and select the multiple boot selection...now with the USB one I can't! Is there any option I have to set in the BIOS to support USB KB at boot time ? If I let go the boot sequence up to Windows, I can use the USB KB in Windows...it is detected and everything seems to be ok!
    Thanks!

  • Fn Key is disabled on boot - Cannot enter bios

    Hi there,
I'm running an x240 series machine running Windows 8.1 pro. I need to enter bios. I have tried butting it from PC settings, but there is no uefi option or any menu or boot menu option.
Hence, the only option was to enter via the traditional route. However, the moment I restart the machine, the fn key green light immediately lights up, effectively locking the button. When I interrupt the normal startup process via the "enter" key, I cannot enter bios via the fn + 1 key since the fn key is disabled or locked.
Is there a reason or a solution to enable the fn key?
Update: Felt like a complete moron. The F1 label was so small on the keyboard that I missed it. Just press the mute option. You will see a tiny F1 label on it.

There is also a way to access UEFI BIOS through Windows 8.1, though it's buried pretty deep.
    Go to >PC Settings
    >Update and Recovery (it's at the very bottom)
    >Recovery (again, at the bottom. the next step shuts down you Windows session, so save your work)
       Click 'Restart now'
the OS shuts down and then displays some 'metro style' options.
       Click 'Troubleshoot'
    then     'Advanced options'
    then     'UEFI Firmware Settings'
    then     'Restart'
then you hopefully will be presented with the options that you are looking for. (works on anything running UEFI Windows 8.1)
    Have fun!

  • NB200-110 won't boot nor allow BIOS setup

    Hi there
I am new on the forum and this is my first post.
I am helping my dad with the troubleshooting of its mini notebook.
    Model is NB 200 - 110.
For a few months, the notebook has been having hard time to boot.
But after several trials, it would normally finally boot and work normally.
Two weeks ago the notebook will no longer boot at all.
When powering on, you can hear some noise ( HD or Fan ?? ) then the "Toshiba Leading Innovation" screen will show up, but it won't pass this point.
On the lower part of the screen you are prompted to press F2 to enter the BIOS setup or F12 to modify the booting devices, but it won't answer to none of the keys ( like if no keyboard present ).
I guess some of the hardware is failing, but is there a way to know what part exactly ?
Thank in advance for your help.
    Jean-Christophe

Hi Dr. Lamp and thank you for your answer. Though when I read it I already have solved the problem.
    Lets me explain how.
Since I made the post yesterday I have been "googling" and find some interesting topics in several forums ( including this one ).
Even if it looks strange, basically the steps to follow are :
1/ place the notebook in the freezer for about 10 minutes, then start it. It should now boot correctly
2/ update the Bios to the latest version ( in my case v2.20, can be dowloaded from Toshiba support page )
Well, I have done it and it works !!
I have been able to restart the computer normally afterward.
Now, I am really curious. What can be the relationship between a sotware issue ( Bios is software right ? ) and a physical ( hardware ) solution. For cooling the notebook in the freezer definitely has physical "impact" on the system, and this allows it to boot correctly, but then, updating the Bios is fixing something in the software side....
    Any logical explanation ?
Anyway, even if the mystery remains ( mystery is good sometime...), the good thing is that the notebook is now up and running.
I will update the post tomorrow to let you know if the computer is still running well.
    Best regards and thanks again,
    Jean-Christophe

  • Satellite P500 neither booting nor installing OS

Hello & Hearfelt Greetings to all Forum Friends,
Please, could anyone kindly look into this problem for me.
My laptop, a Toshiba Satellite P500 is faulty. It will boot past post and as soon as it reaches the "Windows Starting" logo splash (WIN 7), it will freeze and it will stay like that for hours. I changed the hard disk, the memory modules, I tried to re-install the OS, I tried to boot off a Linux Live CD and Live USB and USB DVD Drive, but all to no avail. I changed the configuration on the BIOS, then reset it to default, again to no avail.
Do you think it is a MB fault or CPU or GPU?
And does anyone have a suggested possible repair method?
I thank you all in advance and will be more than pleased to assist anyone !
    Thanks Again!

    Hi
You have already replaced the common parts like HDD and memory.
This was my first idea the memory or HDD could be affected but if you are sure that new parts are ok, then the issue could be related to motherboard.
Usually if the CPU would be affected, then the POST could not be passed properly.
So it seems that you motherboard might malfunction which means that the fix would be really expensive since new motherboard is one of the expensive notebook parts

  • MSI P965Neo-F V2 doesn't boot/enter bios with E8500 cpu

I have MSI P965Neo-F V2 motherboard and I have bought Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 CPU today which is declared as supported as per http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodcpusupport&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1275 but after installing system hangs and don't boot or enter BIOS. I have latest version 3.8 of BIOS.
Tried to plug off everything except video card, tried change memory—nothing helps.
    What I see last:
    http://files.myopera.com/GreLI/albums/2485841/e8500-error-shot.jpg
then system hangs. When I try enter BIOS «Entering BIOS…» is shown and system still hangs. After reset yellow text «overclocking is failed and system is restored to the default settings» is shown and after I press any key system hangs… The number in bottom right corner can vary.
Tried to set lowest D.O.T. settings, turn off speed step (with my old cpu)—no effect. It seems like the motherboard doesn't really support Wolfdale CPU.

Is the CPU SPEC Code SLAPK or SLB9K? I don't know if it makes a difference but CPU support list only shows support for SLAPK.
You should ask MSI if SLB9K is supported if that's the one you got.

  • GE70 2PC - can't enter bios after EC flash

So I've flashed my GE70 2PC with 1.506 firmware provided by MSI. Everything went smooth - it flashed without any errors and the laptop still runs.
However, I can't enter bios anymore. When the laptop boots I'm pressing DEL and it stops on a black screen with an underscore ("_").
I did the EC reset, I even left my laptop without any power supply (no batter and no DC) for the whole night and nothing.
I've contacted MSI and they sent me EC flashes from 1.500 to 1.5007 (without 1.5002). I've tried them all and nothing. Still can't enter bios, however, after rest the laptop boots Win 8.1 normally.
Any ideas/clues how to fix it?

No, I didn't update BIOS prior to EC flash. I also don't remember BIOS version.
However, it seems to be a common issue and MIS has a fix as I get this message from them:

  • Windows 7 Stuck At BIOS Cannot Enter BIOS or Change Boot Media

My laptop has no problem before. Recently I try to install Windows XP. First attempt fail, so I change SATA at BIOS from AHCI to Compatible, success. However the partition that I want to install Windows XP to is not available.
So just to test I choose my Windows 7 partition. Since it want to format the partition, I cancel the installation. After restarting windows, it stuck at bios. I restart again and change SATA to AHCI. Restart, still stuck at bios. This time I cannot enter BIOS, recovery or change boot media. Assuming the boot sector has corrupt, will reseating the cmos battery will fix this  problem. Please help. Thanks in advance.

    hi kiebloom,
Yes, you will need to boot without the HDD to try and access the BIOS again. If you're able to access the BIOS using this method, reload the BIOS defaults by pressing F9 then press F10 to save and exit.
From here, you can try to:
    1. Re-insert the HDD and press the OneKey Recovery button to reinstall Windows 7
    2. Create a recovery disc for Windows 7, format the HDD and downgrade to Windows XP
    3. Dual-boot Windows 7 and Windows XP (see this guide)

  • Aspire V3-551 Won't boot, can't enter BIOS

A friend gave me her daughter's Aspier V3-551 to repair. When booted there is the Acer splash screen and then just a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I cannot enter BIOS with F2 even if I hold it down while powering up. No change if I remove the battery and run on AC and no response to F12. The HDD has what looks like good data on it. If I pull the battery and the HDD and power up I get the PXE boot screen that complains of no network followed by "Press any key...". Pressing F2 and many other keys causes the message to repeat (as expected), but pressing F12 causes no response at all. I believe this is a scrambled BIOS problem, but am not sure what is the best way to recover. If I create a bootable USB thumb drive, will I be able to get the machine to boot from that drive and not look for a PXE server?I could disassemble the chassis and pull the CMOS battery, would that help?Is there any other way to initialize the BIOS?Suggestions appreciated and "Thanks!" in advance.

Thanks for the comment. Didn't pull the battery, but found a great site for teardown info: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/how-to-disassemble-acer-aspire-v3-551-8469/ Spent a lot of time trying to find the right BIOS flash files, espically those containing .FD files mentioned on other sites. Used the CRITICAL Mode entry of Fn + Esc (with no battery) without a USB drive connected just to see what would happen. BIOS came back after restart! Set it to Defaults and that problem solved. BTW, this BIOS was only v1.02 which is not even mentioned on the Downloads support page - much confusion over what BIOS version applies to what machine, even with serial number entered. Now have corrupted Windows and tried Factory Restore with Backup using Alt + F10 during boot. That failed, so I ran the full recovery process (had manually backed up user's files earlier) which seemed to work. More trouble after the 20,000,000 Windows Updates tried to installed and failed. Cleaning that up now, but at least BIOS is back (and F12 option works as desired).

  • Z87-G45 will not boot unless I enter BIOS or boot menu

    Hi,
I v got some problem with my Z87 - unless I enter BIOS or boot menu(F11), I v got error message "Reboot and select proper boot device....".
When I enter BIOS(or boot menu), and dont change anything, exit&save it boots just OK.
The boot priority is simply the OS drive as 1st and everything else disabled. Every single driver is up to date (using supplied live uptade for board (v1.7 bios), and official inter drivers for OS drive (intel SSD), sound, graphics,... everything). Nothing but mouse, keyboard and LCD is connected to the PC. No DVDs inserted, no USB flash drives. Win7 64-bit clean(except drivers ofc) installation.
Any ideas what might be the problem?

  • Satellite L840/020 - Cannot enter BIOS after enabling fast boot option

I have a Toshiba L840/020 (PSK8LA-020007) notebook. I recently installed an Intel 330 Series SSD and Windows 8 Pro RTM 6.2.9200 MSDNAA on it and enabled Fast boot option in the BIOS (Boot speed > Fast).
Now I can not get into the BIOS no matter what I do. I tried pressing power button while holding down F2 (as suggested by few other forums) , up on failing that I tried all F keys and Esc, but nothing works. I also tried repeatedly pressing F2 while booting, connected an external USB keyboard and pressed F2 on that , but no matter what I do I cannot get into the BIOS.
When I go to Download section of Toshiba support > Windows 8 64bit, I can also see a BIOS update for my notebook, but when I try to install that I get the following error :
    Error
    Flash process will be terminated!
Current platform have secure boot feature, it must provide NV storage location by IHISI interface.
Please contact OEM BIOS engineer to add the feature.
Without this IHISI interface, the authenticate variables will be modified or cleared by flash process.
If you understand the risk and still want to flash.
You can add the following setting in platform.ini to ignore error.
    [EngineeringErrorDisable]
    SkipSecureBootProtectionCheck=1
    OK
I didnt change platform.ini and flash, without first seeking help from the community.
Please let me know how to get into the BIOS. Thanks.

    Hi
Try firstly INS button and then F2 button.
Then you should be able to access the BIOS I recommend disabling the fast boot in the BIOS if you could successfully enter the BIOS.
    Regarding the BIOS update.
I checked the Toshiba AU driver page and it seems that the BIOS v6.20 is the same like for Win 7.
I think that the BIOS update should be done running the Toshiba preinstalled system since Win 8 is not officially on the market yet and from my knowledge there are some big restrictions updating the BIOS running Win 8

  • X79A-GD65(8D) won't boot/enter BIOS

Hi, just got my new board and after rebuilding, it won't let me enter BIOS . POST seems to finish, i see the graphic, then the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor top right of screen.
    specs as follows
    X79A-GD65(8D) board
    32gb Corsair ram (8x4gb)
    Gigabyte t560TI
    Seaget 2TB and 1TB HDD's
    i7-3820 proccessor
Cant find out what the BIOS verion is
I have stripped it right back to 1 stick of ram and one HDD, no change.  Have completely dismantled and checked all connectors.
All help gratefully appreciated, this is/was my main work PC and i'm stuck badly without it.

I'm thinking the UEFI/BIOS version may be the problem. Early production mainboards may have been shipped with v1.0 or v1.2. To support the CPU you have, v1.4 is required.
Added: Standard USB keyboard and mouse? Initial startup should be with minimum components, not 8 sticks of RAM and all the HDD's. Makes it hard to troubleshoot if there is a problem. With just the one stick in the primary dimm slot, power off, pull the PSU power cord, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS and see if you can get into the UEFI/BIOS when tapping the Delete key. Was there a code number in the bottom right of the screen also?
