T440 RAM Upgrade Missing

Hello all,
So a little while ago I upgraded the RAM in this T440 with a 8GB stick. Everything was working fine. I had all 12GB working perfectly. At some point in the last three weeks I noticed that the laptop was running slow with Chrome and Photoshop open. Couldn't figure out what was going on. A couple days later I needed to check the Computer properties and noticed it said 4GB of RAM installed. Popped out the stick, booted it up with the on-board 4GB and it started up. Popped it back in and it still boots but still only sees the on-board memory. Check the BIOS and it only sees the on-board memory. I would think that it would not POST properly if it couldn't use the RAM that was installed. Is there something wrong here? I literally just went to Best Buy and picked up a stick. I'm guessing I need a particular RAM stick?

Hi Charlieboy808,
I have suggested you to check with frequency of both the memory, as per the link provided by you it shows that up-graded memory is having 1600MHz bus speed. If there is a mismatch in the memory bus speed then also some memory won’t get detected in the system.
Please check the memory with different system to confirm if the memory is working properly, or else you can visit nearby authorized Lenovo service center for further assistance.
Please click here to visit the link on how to check Memory bus speed.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro 13' Early 2011 running Yosemite. After the RAM upgrade to 16GB, the speed of the computer is still not satisfactory, having some lag times in launching softwares and startup. Please suggest me what to do. Below is the report. Thank you!

First go to the RIM web site and look to see if they have an uninstaller for the device you had.  Some times a reinstall of the application and then running the uninstaller is required for complete removal.
If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles.  I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files.  Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.
    Ciao.

  • Ram upgrade to 2GB - fan running faster

I have just upgraded my intel mac mini from 512 MB to 2 GB using a kingston upgrade kit (KTA-MB667K2/2G).
The system is performing a lot better but there is an annoying "trouble": when 2 GB are installed the fan is running more fast and more often then with 512MB.
During my tests, I have see that while using OS X the system is able to regulate the speed, it goes from very slow to very fast but it moves to fast more often then before and the system is definetly making more noise.
The bigger problem happens when booting using windows XP: when 2 GB of RAM are installed the fan is always running at top speed or near to top speed.
That is not happening while using the original 512 MB.
I have tried to reset the SMC by using the apple istructions here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
but it didn't make any difference.
I have double checked all wires,I have switched from 512MB to 2 GB and from 2 GB to 512MB three times(!) but nothing has changed:
    - when using 512MB fan runs slow;
    - when using 2 GB fan is still able to change speed but is running fast more often.
Further more, to test, I have also left disconnected the fan speed cable in the front side, and in such way the fun starts at max speed and runs at fast speed all the time. So it is not a trouble with such connection.
    Is that normal this behavior?
Does anybody have noticed any fan speed difference after RAM upgrade?
About BootCamp and XP running fan at max speed, could be that reinstall them could solve the "always on" fan trouble with 2 GB?
Thanks a lot for any help.

I have some updates about the problem.
I was thinking that it was a my fault about some missing setup needed when installing more ram to mac mini.
So, today, I have moved to a local apple center and I have asked them to install the RAM for me... they do, and it happens the same thing: the fun was running very fast quite often under OS X and was always fast under bootcamp-XP.
I have asked them why this happens and if that was normal, but they have no other mac mini with such amount of ram and they never see it before. They suggest me to test it for a week and eventually to give them the mac for a day to make some hardware tests.
Later, back into my office, the noise was too high and too annoying so I have called again apple to explain the situation.
They told me that they have no reports about similar problems, that it should not make more noise when adding RAM. They suggest me to try remove and reinstall better the RAMs or to try different RAMs (I am using kingston kit KTA-MB667K2/2G).
So I have also phoned to kingston support, and they say that it is a strange bahavior, that they don't have reports about that too. They are now investigating the problem and they let me know something in next days.
They also put to my attention the fact that the computer is able to see and work well with the 2GB memory, so the memory is working correctly. They think this is something related to apple hardware/firmware and could be that apple should fix it in next realases.
Unfortunatly, all this new infos and all the time lost for a "simple" memory upgrade didn't solve my troubles and I still cannot use the mac like I need.
So I have continued my tests by changing the kensington Dimms with other 2 GB dimms by Nanya technologies that were installed on my centrino duo notebook.
Mac mini was able to see and work well with them too, now the fun speed is a little bit slowly then using kingston ones but still more fast than with 512MB.
Bootcamp-XP is still not usable due to high fan speed and the high noise. OS X seems to control better the fan speed but it goes high there too for any little thing you do.
So I have made one more test suggested by kingston:
I have started mac mini while only one kingston dimm were inside.
In this way the mac mini was making some less noise that using the two nanya dimms, but it was still to high.
The last test I made was to check the cpu temperature with different amounts of RAM and results were interesting.
Using OS X with 512MB, the cpu temperature is about 33 C while iddle; if I try to start parallels desktop with guest windows XP, temperature goes up to 40 C and the fan is still running at quite low levels.
Instead, while 1 GB of RAM was installed, cpu iddle temperature was 35 C and starting parallels desktop will result in temperature levels till 50 C.
So there was a difference of about 10 C.
While doing these test I have left the mac mini open, so once stopped, I was able to quickly feel the RAM temperature with my finger and it was quite hot.
I didn't try temperature with both 2GB dimms, but I belive it will be surely more high.
So what I am thinking now is that probably apple is aware about higher temperature inside when using more RAM, so the bios starts the mac mini with the fun running faster because it detects the 2 GB memory.
OS X is able to control someway the fun so it is not always running fast (but quite often) while using boot camp with XP becomes impossible due to the fan always at max speed.
I don't think apple's rams could work at lower temperature than kingston ones, so the dubt now is that things are correct in this way.. so intel mac mini with 1/2GB could be a shame due to high level of fan noise... or... my mac mini has something wrong.
Is anybody here with a mac mini and 2 GB of RAM?
Anybody could make some test about that?
Thanks a lot for any help

  • MBP battery "Not Charging" after RAM upgrade

I brought my MBP into an apple store for the genius bar to install a 4g RAM upgrade, after i got it back it will not run on battery power. Its plugged in with green light on power adapter and battery indicates (0%) (Not Charging). Please help. My battery worked fine before bringing it into the apple store.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This sounds like the RAM installed was either not to spec, faulty, or the installer missed a step. Take it back to the store and indicate to them what happened.

  • HP Envy 13 1030nr. Windows 7 64-bit. RAM upgrade help.

I just purchased a RAM upgrade for my Envy 13 and I was trying to figure out how exactly to access the memory module.  I couldn't find a youtube video for the Envy 13 and reading the maintenance manual provides only partial instructions to access the memory module.  It tells you what you need to do (Disconnect the TouchPad cable 2 from the low insertion force (LIF) connector on the system board) but not how to do it without damaging the computer.  I don't want to permanently sever a cable or anything so I'm looking for help via a link to a video or more detailed instructions on exactly how to safely access the memory module.
I was under the impression that this would be a quick replacement, but the more I read the manual, the more I think that this is going to be a little more complicated than opening up the bottom and removing the current RAM chip and replacing it with the one I have.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    Here is the Manual:
    Manual
Memory is indeed on the motherboard and getting there requires nearly complete disassembly. See Page 4-26. Not sure how this qualifies as "easy" and if you have not done this before you should get some help. And yes, keep careful track of those screws.

  • Hard Drive and RAM upgrades for latest 15" MBP

I'm minutes from ordering a new MBP. Only concerns are whether I get hte Apple upgrades or shop around.
    I like this Hard Drive...
    http://www.compu2000.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=6433
    And this RAM upgrade...
    http://www.a-power.com/product-10937-311-4
If these are equivalent to the apple options I can save hundreds and get a 320 GB drive, which will make a great portable.
So, does my plan hold water?

You're on your own for support when you do your own upgrades like this, but generally speaking, it works fine.
Note that HDD is less risky than RAM. With RAM you run the risk of unstable behavior that is tougher to diagnose. That said, a quality RAM upgrade and some initial testing with any of many available tools is as good as a factory build.
HDD upgrades are less risky, and I've upgraded (well, replaced after HDD death) ones in my MBPs many many times. I crunch my hard drives more than normal and have to generally replace them about every year. Some of the MBPs don't make this easy, and prepare to get all sorts of cozy with little 0 and 1 sized Phillips screwdrivers and some T6 as well, but it is doable (just not quite for the truly faint of heart).
Again, you're on your own for support once you do this, so weigh that in your decision.

  • This is the regular status of the memory of my macbook pro. Do you think I need a RAM upgrade?

    Hi there,
I'm hoping to seek the expert views of the community here.
I have a MacBook Pro, Late 2011, 17 inch. Running latest version of Mavericks. Speed seems to have slowed somewhat, perhaps since I upgraded to Mavericks, but not certain about that. Based on my research of the Apple communities, I suspect that I may benefit from a RAM upgrade.
Attached are a few screen shots to assist:
Based on what I have researched in the community, the fact that I have used 3.99GB of 4.00GB, and have used 5.63GB of Virtual memory, seems to suggest to me that I have well and truly maxed out my RAM. Also there is a high number of read ins/outs (but it had been a wheile since I last did a restart on the MBP (if that has any effect on these numbers here).
I have also read that my model of MacBook Pro is upgradeable to 16GB of RAM (2 x 8GB).
Thoughts and views from the community would be greatly appreciated. Will additional RAM help the speed and performance of my MacBook Pro?
    Many thanks.

More RAM is always a Prudent move...

  • 24" iMac (Primo 2009) strange RAM upgrade issue

I have a 24" iMac (Primo 2009) at work. I been granted a RAM upgrade by the IT department and have received 2 indentical 4 GB modules.
The 24" iMac (Primo 2009) uses 1066 MHz DDR3 modules and supports up to 8 GB RAM in 2 slots. I have purchased RAM from this source http://www.dustin.dk/product/5010642132/corsair-4gb-ddr3-1066mhz-1x4gb-so-dimm-i mac-macbook-macpro/#intcmp=searchProvider_SiteSeeker (Corsair Mac Memory so they SHOULD be fine.)
    Here's the issue:
I had 2x 2GB modules. I have taken both out.
I have inserted the new 2x 4GB modules but the machine refuses to boot. It gives off 3 beeps-interval-3 beeps-interval (repeats).
I took out one of the 4GB modules from slot B. It boots.
I inserted the one I removed in slot B again so we're back at 8GB. same beeps. No boot.
I switched the 2 4GB modules from slot A+B around. Now beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
I inserted one 4 GB in slot 1, and one of the old 2 GB in slot 2. It boots with 6GB RAM.
I inerted only the one that won't boot when in slot B in slot A, beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
OK - so logical deduction tells me one of the new 4GB RAM modules is defective. No matter what configuration, booting fails with that specific module inserted, though there are different beeps. I also know tha both slots work since the machine works with 6 GB RAM (2+4).
So I called Dustin, and since we're a big customer they sent a new moduel for free. But, I have the same isssue with the new module!! What are the chances I have recived 1 working and 2 defective modules? not big right? So my iMac seems fine with the old 2GB modules and one of the new 4 GB modules, but says no to the 2 other 4GB modules.
YES - I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC to no avail. Any clue?

Switched the 2 modules around, so there's now a 2GB in slot A and a 4 GB in slot B. Still works fine

  • Kernel Power error after Win 7 and RAM upgrade

    Hello,
I posted earlier on the subject of win7 and ram upgrades.  I did both and it seemed to go fine.  I did the ram first ... replaced a 667Mhz 1gb with a 800Mhz 2gb.  A couple of days later the computer just shut itself down and restarted.  Since then it has done it another 5 times, seemingly at random.  Yesterday I decided to spend some time looking into it and found the 'event log'.  All the shutdowns are recorded as 'critical'.  A search on the web/here showed other occurences of the fault associated with drivers as much as anything.
After I did the win update I did update almost every driver with ones from this site.
Other than the shutdowns the only issues I have which are of very mild concern are the length of time the fingerprint reader takes to be present and that occasionally the cursor is unavailable for about a minute after logging on. When you try and control it it jumps about anywhere but where you want it to go.   I rolled back the alps driver and that seems to have sorted the cursor issue.
So, details of the shutdown from the event log are as follows.
    Log Name:      System
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
    Date:          16/01/2011 16:21:31
    Event ID:      41
    Task Category: (63)
    Level:         Critical
    Keywords:      (2)
    User:          SYSTEM
    Computer:      (removed by me)
    Description:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
There's more (I've shown it all below) but it's not that important.  When I looked into it I found details of the problem on the microsoft knowledge base.  Its described here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504.
I believe I fit into scenario 3 for cause and resolution.
So, it seems that win7 and mixed speed ram may be a problem on some computers ... probably only a tiny number, but it looks like the HP3507 is one of them.  I did see somewhere that I could down speed from 667 to 266 which might help with memory compatability but I can't see anywhere on the the insydeH20 bios where to do it.  BIOS is version F18 .... upgraded from F15 as part of the Win7/RAM ugrade.
Before I swap back to the 'old' memory I'll see if anybody here can come up with any ideas.  It may be that I have to sell off the expensive 2gb memory (ddr2 800mhz 200 pin) for £39.99 from maplin at a bargain price and get 2gb of 667Mhz from somewhere.
The full 'detail' regarding the fault is below.
    Bye for now.

    Hi DWeiland and Schwede,
Thanks for your replies. Yes I did the runtime engine registry change and also mass compiled the LV7.1 folder and my sourcecode. I still see the problem as I have set the LV adapter as Lv 7.1.1 runtime engine. Now I have changed it to LV7.1 development system. With this setting, it is not giving any error. Thus I don’t see any problem now. The older version of the code had the adapter as the runtime engine for some reason, now I have changed the setting to the development system. I hope that it shouldn’t be a problem.
    Thanks again!
    Thank you,
    Sasi

  • Mac pro 5,1 RAM Upgrade

I am planning to give my Mac Pro (Mid 2010) another RAM upgrade. As the official Kingston/Crucial DIMMs do not include 16GB DIMMs, I think of choosing Kingston Value RAM: ECC Registered (3x, 16GB, DDR3-1600, DIMM 240). Has anyone here in the forum tried these?
    Thanks for your comments.

The biggest official Kingston part is KTA-MP1333/8g which is a single 8GB module.
For 16GB modules the main criteria are that
It must be registered memory - not buffered, this is more because there aren't any 16GB buffered DIMMS
You cannot mix registered and buffered so any other existing memory left fitted must also be registered, as it happens you are supposed to not mix 16GB with smaller sizes anyway
It should be 1333Mhz DDR3 although in theory 1066Mhz DDR3 would work, again I don't believe there are any 16GB 1066Mhz DIMMS
It should be ECC (error correcting)
    CL9
The presence of a Thermal Sensor is apparently not compulsory, i.e. memory without it will work in a Mac Pro.
I have not used any 16GB DIMMS myself but other than OWC as per the link provided by Illaass, the following might be suitable
KVR13R9D4K4/64i - this is a kit of 4 x 16GB and this article has a post from someone who says they worked for them http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1493588
If you can find a kit of 2 x 16GB of the same type then logically they should also work, they would probably be KVR13R9D4K2/32i. As a reminder to do 64GB or more you need dual processors. The single processor model Mac Pro 2010 is limited to 48GB.

  • Display problem after RAM Upgrade to MS6712

    Hi there,
after a RAM upgrade (512mb to 3GB) my PC has developed a display problem. The graphics are slow / rippled and video playback is very poor. In device manager no "display adapters" are present and there is also an error mesage referring to the VIA CPU to AGP2/AGP3.0 controller not having enough free resources to run due to a conflisct with VGAsave? I've downloaded the latest VIA chipset drivers to no effect?
System info: MS6712 MB, AMD Athlon 1.25GHZ, XP SP3.0

    OK, here's the info on my PSU;
    It's a Powerman FSP250-60GTU(PF). Input: 230V - 5A, 50Hz. Max Output: 250W
While I had the case open I took out 2 of the RAM modules and without making any other changes everything appeared to work fine with just the 1GB, so I tried putting 1 more back in to take it to 2GB and again all seems fine? Does this indeed point to my PSU then? If so and it works fine with 2GB should I be thankfull for a 512mb to 2GB upgrade and send the 3rd module back to Crucial??
Before I posted this thread I did run a memtest from Memtest86+ with all three modules installed and it came up with NO problems?
Re Henry's post, I searched using the format of the part no on the RAM modules themselves i.e. M368L2923FLN-CB3 and it took me here:
    http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/productListNonflexTable.do?fmly_id=118&sht_id=1
Other info on printed the modules themselves: 1GB DDR PC2700 CL2.5
According to Everest my CPU temp (with 2GB installed) is: 43 degrees (MOBO 30 degrees and HD 42 degrees) - do these seem normal?

  • Do I need a RAM upgrade

    Hi- I've got a PB 1.67GHZ (aluminum) with 1GB RAM (2 512MB chips).
I tend to leave lots of apps open (around 10) for my workflow. I'm always having to jump between apps. None of them are particularly taxing though I do play one game that takes over the system (so I shut down other apps for that). My system definitely gets slower with lots of apps open.
Currently, my Activity Monitor shows page in/out as 307943/213848. I'm thinking that second number is not good and I ought to get some more RAM.
In addition to recommending a RAM upgrade, should I go for just an upgrade to 1.5GB or go for 2GB?

Currently, my Activity Monitor shows page in/out as
307943/213848. I'm thinking that second number is
not good and I ought to get some more RAM.
Your system is memory deprived. The general guideline is that page outs should be 10% or less of page ins. Yours are currently about 69%, meaning for every 10 page ins, your system is paging out roughly 7 pages. A page out is where the system has to move something out of memory to disk to make room for something else, and that impacts performance.
You can upgrade to 1.5gb by installing a 1gb RAM strip, and monitor your page ins/outs and performance/feel. For what you run, that may do it for you. However, if you don't see much improvement, then going to 2gb is available to you.
Recommend Crucial, Kingston (not their valueram line), or Samsung memory, which has proven reliable in our PB's. Crucial can be found at their website http://www.crucial.com , Kingston at http://www.kingston.com , and Samsung is available from a number of companies, of which OWC at http://www.macsales.com is one source.
