T440 Using Large Amount of Resources

Hello. We currently purchased some T440 20B6-005BUS for our users and are applying our Windows 7 SP1 x64 Enterprise image to them through SCCM (and yes, ExpressCache gets installed). After imaging the first couple we noticed that at idle these laptops sit at 2-2.5GB RAM usage (4GB total in these machines). Thinking it may be something wrong with our image, I created a new gold image and applied it. However, the RAM usage is still very high.
To verify that it wasn't our image I started up another couple T440 out of the box with the Lenovo default image, and sure enough, it's also using 2-2.5GB at idle. Has anyone else seen this? It seems that some service(s) in svchost are using the most at idle (around 100-200MB).
I plan on installing Windows 8.1 Enterprise (fresh ISO) just to see if the T440 is just poorly configured for Windows 7, but I don't really expect Windows 8.1 to help much. I'd appreciate hearing back about everyone elses experiences with the T440 (especially 20B6-005BUS). Thanks.

Well, I'm using Ubuntu x86_64 on my 8GB t440, and it is currently using 1.2 GB of RAM (with just chrome open), most of which is chrome and the desktop (OK, the Compiz WM is just rather heavyweight). The Win8 that came pre-installed was very bloated and slow, and was using masses of resources.
I think installing a nice, fresh iso would help a lot. (Even Windows )
As I stated above, we have been installing fresh images. I actually found the solution myself: http://support.lenovo.com/en_IN/detail.page?DocID=HT077590 Turns out it is ExpressCache. I don't know if it really will help performance like the KB claims, but we might have to get rid of these T440 anyways. • Firefox is using large amounts of CPU time and disk access, and I need to know how to shut down most of this so I can actually use the browser.

Firefox is a very busy piece of software. It's using large amounts of CPU time and disk access. It puts my usage at low priority, so I have to wait for some time to be able to use my pointer or keyboard. I don't know what it uses all that CPU and disk access time for, but it's of no use to me. It often takes off with massive use of resources when I'm not doing anything, and I may not have use of my pointer for several minutes. How can I shut down most of this so I can use the browser to get my work done. I just want to use the web site access part of the software, and drop all the extra. I don't want Firefox to be able to recover after a crash. I just want to browse with a minimum of interference from Firefox. I would think that this is the most commonly asked question.

  • Causes windows 7 desktop window manager (wdm.exe) to use large amounts of memory

Whenever I have Firefox4 open, it causes dwm.exe (Windows desktop manager) to use large amounts of RAM - It starts at about 100MB, quickly increasing to about 1GB over 20 seconds, then dropping back down to 100MB and so on. It does this continuously while Firefox4 is open, with the occasional "Your computer is running slow" message being shown by Windows.
Update: Only occurs when browser isn't on the primary display on a multi-monitor setup.

I had the exact same problem. DWM would use massive amount of memory when Firefox 4 was open on my secondary display, especially when scrolling with the mouse wheel. It would use so much that Windows 7 (8GB RAM) would turn off Aero. Going into Options>Advanced>General and unchecking "use hardware acceleration" fixed the issue. Of course now I can't take advantage of any hardware acceleration.

I Have the same problem, I switched off location services, maps in data, whatever else maps could be involved in nd then just last nite it chewed 100mb... I'm also on vodacom so I'm seeing a pattern here somehow. Siri was switched on however so I switched it off now nd will see what happens. but I'm gonna go into both apple and vodacom this afternoon because this must be sorted out its a serious issue we have on our hands and some uproar needs to be made against those responsible!

  • App Store uses large amounts of data on startup?

Hi everyone.  This might be a bit of an odd question, but in my search for where the heck all my data has gone, I've been doing some monitoring and noticed something that seemed pretty strange. When I start the App Store application on Mountain Lion, it uses at least 20MB of data, and normally a lot more - up to 30 or 40MB.  This is just to launch the application.  If you have an unlimited download quota, this will probably be of no interest to you, although it will affect startup speed I expect.  Where I live, downloads are limited, so this is a problem.  I wouldn't classify 40MB as really large, my quota for the month is 75GB, but it seems very excessive just to launch an app.  Since I am routinely hitting my download limit I am looking to minimise wastage.
I guess I have one main question: Does anyone know whether it is possible to fix this, perhaps somehow in the preferences or way I use the app?  And of course I'm interested if anyone has noticed similar behaviour, so I know it's not just something strange on my computer.
    Thanks.
    Ivan

I would have to say 40MB is by far the biggest example I've seen on my computer, but I have commonly seen what appears to be 10-20MB of download at startup.  Still very large to start a program.  It seems if you quit the app on the Updates screen, then it will go there by default, and that is a reasonably small amount of data used.  It does appear to cache data, as subsequent startups on the same day don't use anywhere near as much data.  When I just tried it again, for instance, it used a little under 1MB.  So it is highly variable.
I will take up your suggestion to give Apple some feedback - thanks.

  • How can I keep a state machine readable when using large amounts of in/outputs

Hello, I am new to Labview,
Read trough the fundamentals and the
getting started and a lot of examples.
What I want to do is use a standard
state machine from the template, and add some stages, for example
orange, apple, banana. At this point I can use numeric controls to
put in the amount of oranges, apples, bananas there are. I can even
use a led to tell the user which state of the state-machine is
    active.
The thing is there will be more numeric
controls and more leds and it would be nice if the code would still
be readable when there are 20 inputs and 20 outputs.
    Questions
    (1) It would be nice if I could use the
typedef to select the right state AND the corresponding numeric
controls and leds out of a cluster or an array kind of structure to
keep the number of wires low. Is this possible, how can I do this?
    (2) I tried to put the numeric controls
into a cluster but that way I can't put the numeric control for the
apples in the upper right corner and the numeric control for the
oranges in the lower left down corner of the front panel.
    (3) An example would be really nice, I
know that I saw some examples describing this problem but there are
so many examples that after a few hours of searching I haven't found
    the right one yet.
Thanks in advance for the effort.
p.s. I will not use Labview to do
calculations on fruit, I am only using this to make the question
    easier to understand.

I can only start a proper answer but I might as well start with that.
When I am developing State Machines I have to think about what data is used and manipulated in each state. I then have to think about where am i going to keep and manage the data. I list all of the fields that are "touched" in each state and what values are used together and which are independent form the others. After this phase of the analysis, I usually have some data structure defined (cluser array etc).
Then I flipp from thinking about the state to thinking about the data (after all this is LabVIEW and the data-flow paradigm is critical). If I see data that is only used by the State machine and is used in many of the states, then the data structure get put in a shift-register for easy access in each state. This maybe enough of an answer for your fruity question.
When i see data that is shared or only used in a handful of states then I concider putting the data in an Action Engine. Depending on how you design your AE, you can access each of the fruit totoal by name or increment etc as required.
If your app demands many fileds that are all related (can't be broken into distinct data structures) then create a cluster that has all of your values that are used by the AE. Then create an Wrapper VI for each call of the AE but only put the associated fields on the FP of the wrapper and then bundle that value into the cluster and invoke the AE.

  • General question about storage, networking, and using large amounts of data

I have been using a powermac tower G5 up until now. I bought my daughter a macbook pro 15" i7, talk about a zippy little machine. What a screamer. I can't believe how fast it is with final cut express, Aperture, and Photoshop. I tend to use higher end stuff, video, photos, etc. Hence I need not only a good fast processor, but the storage....need lots of hard disk space.
oh, did I mention I bought this for my daughter who's about to go off to college? Heh, when I'm home, she loses the machine to me.... *evil grin*
Anyways, I haven't considered using a laptop before for me personally as I just don't care for the small screen size, no mouse, and things like that.
Seems I've changed my opinion, esp seeing as the new mouse track pad is a game changer. I still am not crazy about the small screen size, but I can get over it.
The one thing I can't get around is the small disk storage. I have 4 TB on my big machine. Between my video, photography, and music, I am nearing a full TB of just raw stuff. If I count all the things I've stored, especially finished videos I make of photography projects, well you can image the chomping that occurs on disk storage.
So what is a man to do about storage?
I'm really getting hooked on this zippy little machine. The idea of dragging it around is compelling. Having my work not tied to a desk is fun.
but the lack of storage is sucky, terribly so.
I have one possible option, taking the G5 and making it a server. I can use it for backup and high speed transfer, working on the transfer part today.
I thought I'd poll the collective wisdom of the community and see what do you peeps think is the best overall way to handle such a situation?
What is the absolute fastest best way to use external drives? Firewire 800 is ok, but when working with 400gb aperture database files....
I'm hoping there is some way to start posturing myself to really use a laptop for my full computing experience.
Or am I trying to make a small portable machine act like a tower? Is this not a reasonable hope at this point in time?
I'm open to suggestions. I'm going to purchase something when my daughter takes this laptop with her to college. Either a new mac pro tower or laptop. I love the portability but need speed and massive storage.
    Thanks for opining.

    Storage:
    1. Replace the drive with a larger one. Up to 1 TB is now available for notebook drives.
    2. Get a portable external drive for additional storage needs. See the options at OWC as an example.
    Drive speed:
    1. FW 800 should be fast enough for your work. If the computer has an ExpressCard slot then consider a card supporting full speed eSATA. You may then achieve speeds closer to the internal bus.
A laptop is not a tower so stop thinking of or comparing to your tower. Besides the laptop's speed compared to your G5 is more like comparing a Ford Focus to a Ferrari F150.
As for "polling" opinions here: polling is forbidden by the forums' Terms of Use.

  • Constantly getting messages Firefox is using large amounts (600,000+) CPU & sometimes for the plug-in,too. Solution?

When using Firefox, I now get messages from Norton, constantly, stating CPU usage is abnormally high (600,000+). I sometimes notice a plug-in container usage is also high on my Windows task manager. It's making my computer very slow. Any suggestions?

I think your 4GB of RAM could have something to do with it. 4GB is a pretty small amount and the minimum. Your system is really like a clogged vacuum and is not running to it's full potential. I would upgrade the RAM. My Macbook Pro is a Late 2011 2.2ghz i7 quad-core with 8GB RAM and fly's... After all, RAM is used to store files as you are using your system and when it uses up the 4GB writes those files to the HDD/SSD. The more RAM, the faster you'll be, because it will take a lot longer to fill up the RAM. I can put 16GB of RAM in my model, and plan on it. I also will be getting a SSD very soon and probably first.

  • ITunes Accounts using large amounts of data

Hi, I don't understand but for some reason my data usage for my iPhone 4S jumped DRAMATICALLY just in the past few days. I somehow used over 2 GB of data on my 4G cellular network with just a little web browsing and about an hour of music streaming (something I also do, but typically have about 2 GB is one month -- not three days).
Went into my Cellular usage and found that iTunes Accounts had used 5.6 GB over the past two or three months (I hadn't reset it) and wondered what the heck was it doing? I never download apps or update apps unless I'm on WiFI.
So I reset my celluar data and, again, without doing ANYTHING on the App Store in less than 15 minutes, my iTunes Accounts under System Services had used 51.4 MB of data. Over 50 MB in just 15 minutes without even opening the App Store?
What could this be from? Even iCloud functionality shouldn't be using that much and it hadn't updated since yesterday on WiFi.
Any suggestions on what could be going on and how to stop it?There's no way I could have used 2GB in just three days with as little as I use it for webbrowsing, etc., off of WiFi.

Tried your suggestion of doing the All Settings Reset. And, at first, it seemed to work. The iTunes Account data usage stopped around 108 MB. But then, in the past day, it exploded again and is now up to 590 MB. So like 450 MB in one day. I always close open apps (not by the home button, but by swiping them off) and since it breaks down the data used by each application, I see what is used by individual apps. Nothing even comes close to the 590 MB for iTunes Accounts under System Services.
This is insane and really driving me nuts because I don't know how to stop it and obviously this is going to kill my ability to even use 4G.
Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • Removed SQL 2012 AV group leaves phantom processes consuming large amounts of resource

    Hi,
I have been experiencing performance degradation on some production servers that previously were part of a SQL 2012 High availability Group.
I recently used a small window of opportunity to test the HADRON groups on some of my SQL Servers. Unusually because of the licencing and hardware high spec, identically setup servers required I had to take some of our servers out of the web production
pool during a quiet period and use these for testing.
When the testing concluded, I removed all the HA SQL groups disabled, then removed the windows cluster and removed the cluster Feature from both of the servers and rebooted, but I see the following phantom queries.
    () select table_id, item_guid, oplsn_fseqno, oplsn_bOffset, oplsn_slotid
    from [<dbname>].[sys].[filetable_updates_2105058535] with (readpast)
    order by table_id
A reboot resolved the issue initially and although unhappy without knowing the root cause I decided not to spend any further time investigating as believed it was resolved. But I noticed a major hit on performance on those specific server again after 2-3
weeks and the queries have returned, if this happens during peak period I will be short of capacity and unable to reboot.
How can I completely remove trace of this as these are obviously protected system tables?.... there are still the odd days when I wished I was still allowed to meddle in those system tables :)

I'd guess that it is enabled in the process somewhere then, because we have never used the filetable feature, only AlwaysON.
The query detailed above runs for each user database - soaking up CPU i.e. at a fairly quite period this servers CPU is running at almost double another identical spec server in its pool on our website.
Looking the procedure cache, historically it if you combined the separate plans it spends
90% of CPU on these queries.

  • I am totally cellular wireless.  Will the creative cloud use large amounts of bandwidth?

I currently have a very powerful workstation with the full CS loaded.  I am on the road 100% and use a Verizon dataplan through a router.  What I am wondering is the impact of Creative Cloud n my bandwidth?  Any insight is appreciated.  Bob

negligible except for initial downloading of your programs.
once your software is installed and activated you don't even need to be connected to the internet but once every 30 days, if you have a monthly subscription, and once every 99 days with an annual subscription.

  • IPad 4 using massive amounts of wifi.

My wife's iPad 2 is using large amounts of wifi data. She has the cellular option, but I have it turned off and all data is going through wifi. My router says she is using 10x more data packets than any other computer in the house, even the ones that have heavy Internet usage. It is using 2x more data than a device we watched Netflix on for 2 hours last night.
How can I determine what apps are using so much wifi data?
This may also impact a data overage we got in just 1 day of cellular use last month. She only has the 256M plan and I didn't think anything of it. I have tried to shut down cellular access by everything but email, Safari and maps.
    Thanks,
    Jay

Thanks for the response, but I had already done that and it didn't help. Yes, my wife had 30-40 apps running, but shutting them down didn't help.
Based on other things I have read I have turned off Notifications (except email and Facebook) and turned off Location services. That may have helped. I need to run the iPad a while longer, then try turning things back one one at a time.
    <5 minutes later>
Wow! I just had her check her email and download the latest Facebook messages. Even though it has only been an hour since she did it, it took 2 Megs of data to get just a couple of messages.
Obviously I need to play with this some more.
Anyone have problems with major data loads from Facebook?
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Hi all,
we hve integrated OBIR (Oracle BI Reporting) with OIM (Oracle Identity management) to generate the custom reports.
