T440p ultrabay HDD not spinning down

My T440p has the Lenovo ultrabay caddy containing an HDD that never spins down and I've not idea how to make it obey the Win8 power settings that specifiy drives spin down after 20 minutes idle. Clearly that setting is for the main bay drive only (which in my case is an SSD).
Can anyone point me in the right direction? At present I see absolutely no way of spinning down the ultrabay drive short of turning the machine off.

Hi,
You've ruled out the obvious I presume?  Do you have the Photos tile on the modern screen?  Is it live?
That one got me on my T420.  The slideshow gadget was accessing my photos - on the HDD so it couldn't spin down.

  • IPod HDD never spins down when connected to computer

    I've got a two-week old iPod.
I've selected "Manually manage music and videos" in the iPod options in iTunes.
Whenever my iPod is connected to my MacBook, the iPod's HDD is constantly spinning, and the backlight is always turned on. (I've got it set to turn off after 10 seconds when using it while not connected to the computer.)
Is this always-spinning HDD/always-on backlight normal behavior for an iPod connected to a computer?
I tried the "Five Rs," but nothing changed.

Just got back from the Apple Store, where they gave me a replacement iPod for the one that wasn't spinning down while connected and charging to the computer.
Got home, tried the new one--and the same thing. The backlight remains on and the hard drive spins away while it's connected to the computer.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this actually normal behavior for iPods that are enabled for disk use rather than to sync?

  • Apple software RAID 0 not spinning down while not in use

I have a G-Tech G-RAID w/ Thunderbolt, 8TB external enclosure.  It has two 4TB fujitsu drives in it, set up as RAID 0 with Apple's Disk Utility v13 (426) that ships with 10.8 Mountain Lion.  This is attached to a very cleanly installed Mid 2011 Mac Mini, which is acting as a media server.  There is basically no 3rd party software on it, because it's acting as a NFS filer server for streaming digital players around the house.
However, I have the G-RAID set to spin down when possible in energy saver, and it's not.  It never spins down.  I have 4 external drives on this media server, ranging from USB to FW800 to the Thunderbolt drive, all from different manufacturers, and different sizes and models.  All the other drives spin down after 10 minutes.
Not only is the checkbox "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" checked in Energy Saver, but a
    pmset -g
reveals that the "disksleep" is set to 10 (min).
In frustration, I have tried a lot of things including (but not limited to) removing all other hard drives and hardware, starting up with shift held (safe boot) and removing any software at all that I thought would be keeping the drive "alive."
Finally I decided to start monitoring the drive with fs_usage, to see if I could suss out what is keeping this one drive alive.
"fs_usage | grep DISKNAME" reveals that SystemUIServer is accessing the drive every minute, about seven times in a clump.  Considering that SystemUIServer is the peice of software that controls the little menu add-ons to the right of the menubar, I have spend a great deal of time trying to figure out what would use SystemUIServer that is accessing this drive.
Now it's true that this drive is set up as a time machine drive, but I have disabled time machine, and spotlight, and still I get the same SystemUIServer accesses every minute.  Here is a fs_usage dump:
    orion:~ seanb$ sudo fs_usage | grep Betelgeuse

As you can see, it's the same seven drive accesses every minute.  This is NOT occuring with any of my other drives.  Now, here comes my wild conjecture.  Is this something the system does because they are RAID slices?  Do OS X software RAID slices check themselves every minute? This seems to be preventing them from sleeping.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm going nuts here.

The second column in your fs_usage report says that iStat Menus is what is accessing your disk (Istat64).  Disable iStat Menus and I bet your issue will go away.  I know there is a module in iStat Menus to monitor drive space, but if I recall correctly, even if that module is disabled, iStat has a habit of checking drives anyhow.  I remember hearing people getting rid of istat menus in order to allow their HDs to sleep propely.
In fact, and easy way to test this would be to reboot your Mac with the shift key held down until you see your desktop load up.  This will prevent 3rd party add-ons from loading like iStat Menus. Let me know if that works.
Unfortunatrly this is not the problem I am having, as I've booted with shift, and I still see the  "getattrlist" accesses in my fs_usage report.
EDIT: stupid font made your report look like iStat when it was Lstat.  So what I said about iStat Menus is probably incorrect.  But using the shift key to boot could still lead you to the correct anwer.  I'm doing testing on my end as well. Let you know if I see anything that pertains to your issue.  (I got an Lstat entry in my fs_usage when I open the drive during testing, but I have not beeing getting them an regular intervals like you do.  I would still guess that you have 3rd party software that is checking on drives periodically, and that holding shift might suss that out.)

  • IX2 not spinning down

My ix2 has been running quite nicely for a long while now with 2 2tb drives in Raid 1.
Recently I noticed it has stopped spinning down. It has gone through this before. I have not changed any settings other than keeping up with all firmware updates.
I always have to set energy saving to 1 hour and then back to 5mins straight after it has been turned on in order for spin down to work at all. Even that is not working now. That trick came from someone else here.
Is there any way of discovering what is keeping it awake?
I did try sshing in before but never got very far.
Please Lenovo cant you just make energy saving work on these things.
Ps I have no homepage, media sharing not used and i only use the windows sharing and http protocols. Everything is kwpt as a minimum because of the enrgy saving issues.

    Hi billybo8,
If you have any features enabled that require access to the device, the power down drives will not work. If you have the media server, personal cloud, remote access, iSCSI, or any other protocols that access the device it will not work.
If you have everything disabled and the power down drives is still not working, you will need to contact technical support directly to create a ticket with them to further investigate and troubleshoot to determine if there is an issue with the device.

  • FCP 5 and Tiger = do I need any utility to not spin-down my LaCie disks?

Before Tiger, I had a small utility that prevented my FW-disks not to spin down.
I run FCP 5, DVDSP4, SoundTrack Pro and some other apps on an iBook G4 and an G4 Dual.
After blowing the iBook disk, I have installed Tiger, and after each app install, I repair the disk permissions. Also after every software upgrade I repair the permission. Should I think of anything else to get a fresh clean system to start working in?
    TIA

To force your drives to never sleep:
Launch the Terminal application (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and type:
    sudo pmset spindown x
type your password when it asks for it.
x=the number of minutes that you want till your drive spins down.
    0 = never
More info on using pmset here:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/pmset.1. html
    And I found this here
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/sbbod.html
    I hope that this helps.
And note that this is a more 'controlled' way of putting the hard disk to sleep than is possible in >system preferences>energy saver>sleep>
If you go that way, checked means 10 minutes and unchecked means 180 minutes (not never).
    Good luck.

  • Time Capsule will not spin down

I have read some similar posts regarding this issue, but none could I find that is similar to my issue. I have an older Time Capsule (model #1254) which I recently upgraded from 500 GB to a Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 rpm 64 MB cache SATA 6.0 GB/s drive. Old drive was full. Since doing so the Time Capsule will not stop spinning, even when both of my computers are asleep or even shut down. The outside of the TC case is warm to the touch and I can feel and hear the drive spinning. The previous 500 GB Seagate drive did not have any of these issues.
Last night, while at home, I tried downgrading the firmware several times, but no luck. I have since read on the discussions to try renaming the TC and also, resetting the TC. I was hoping that someone else has had similar issues with a similar setup and has stumpled upon a solution. Obviously, I'm worried about the heat eventually killing my TC!
I decided on the 2 TB Seagate drive after reading other forums and discussions, but maybe I choose poorly?
    Thanks all!

Hi, after some tests i went to a new situation, which allows me to spin down the disk, in certain circumstances. It took me a week, so I want to share this experience in case it would be of any help.
I executed the following operations using a MacBook Pro with a new installation of OS X 10.6 from an external disk. This is not necessary, but I wanted to exclude the possibility of some app or hidden process in my system, or even some unknown (to me) new feature of OS X 10.9 using the TC disk without my awareness. During all the test, no other device was connected to the TC network.
First, I copied the Time Machine spare disk volume from the TC to an external USB drive, via the USB port at the back of the TC.
Then I formatted the TC disk to all zeros and reset the TC configuration to factory default.
At this point, restarting the TC, the disk was spinning for hours like before, no change. But now I can exclude it was the OS X Spotlight indexing the files: with the disk formatted to zero, there was nothing to index. So, Spotlight is not guilty to for this buggy behavior of the TC.
Now what happened is that I mounted the TC with Finder, and, 5 minutes later, the disk stopped from spinning. I can't say if this would happen even if I wouldn't format the disk, as I don't remember the last time I mounted the TC as a remote disk. If someone has this problem, I believe this is the first thing to try, keep the TC mounted and see if the disk spins down.
Then I went back to my Mavericks installation, copied the Time Machine spare disk volume, perviously backed up to the external disk, back into the TC. And finally reconfigured Time Machine to keep on using the old backup volume.
Now Time Machine regularly backs up every hour, and 5 minutes later the disk spins down. But this only works when the TC is mounted as remote disk. Whenever I unmount it, and then backup, the disk keeps his old behavior and doesn't spin down.
I think it is out of discussion that the spin down command always comes from the TC and not from the Mac, because the default spin down time of OS X Mavericks is set to 10 minutes (and so is mine), while my TC now spins down after 5 minutes, according to his settings. So, the TC is able to spin down my non-original disk, but only when he likes. This means that if I disconnect my Mac from the TC network, and someone else connects his Mac to the same network, without mounting the TC drive, it will start spinning endlessly. This is definitively crazy.

  • Time Capsule not spinning down

Ive searched this forum for answers to this - and all of them seem to be old.  I am having a new issue where the TC doesn't spin down after completing a backup.  Also, I just now powered down the connected computer and the TC continued to spin.  This has never happened before, and just started a few days ago.
The internet part of the TC is working fine, both wifi and wired functions.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Sorry, should have clarified.  I use it for the time machine backups only - I was talking about makig a safety backup of these sparse bundles (I think that's what time machine backup is called) in case it s%#t the bed, and i needed to drag it over to a newer unit.  Maybe that process doesn't work.
Copying the sparsebundles is possible but may not be worth the effort.. if you replace the hard disk, just keep the old disk as is. that is already your backup. It is really only to recover stuff that you think you might have lost.. but in general a backup will be only that.. a backup.
The unit is getting pretty hot during backups.  I CAN keep my hand on it, but it's very warm.
I have not restored to defaults.  Nor have I erased the drive clean yet.  I was just going down the firmware route.  Should I try resetting before erasing it? Or do both at the same time?  I usually try to do one step at a time to see if I can narrow down the issue, but I'm fine with erasing it, and then resetting if there is no hope for one or the other to help.
The heat is killing it.. softly and by degrees.. both time and temp wait for no man.. or was that the tides.
I would say step 1. Restore defaults.. that is worthwhile.. do the full restore ie hold in the reset and power on.. keep holding in reset until you see rapid flashing led.. then allow it to restart. Redo the setup.
Step 2.. Firmware update will not fix it and could make it worse.. I would not do that at the moment. But there is no harm in trying .. you can always go back to earlier versions.
Step 3... wipe the hard drive. That is the final step and if that doesn't work.. well what is wrong can be power supply, hard disk or a combo of things.
Then take more drastic measures from there?  I wouldn't mind replacing the hard drive myself, but is there any trickery to getting the firmware onto it on reboot?
    Thanks for the thorough help!
    Scott
Hard drive replacement is dead easy.. google for it.
    But a few provisos..
    1. Do not buy advanced format drive. Standard green 2TB is possible.. don't try for 3TB it won't work or is painful. Try and check what drives have been used successfully so you don't become the guinea pig.. I am all for lab rats but don't want to be one!!
    2. Leave off the rubber mat. Just put some feet on the unit to keep it off the bench.. about 10mm should be plenty even 5mm is ok. (.25"-.5" in Imperial)
    3. Just initialise the drive in the TC.. ie erase. there is no firmware on the hard drive.. but the TC will prepare it for use.
Consider if it isn't better.. with hard disks so much now, not to do anything.. erase the drive.. ebay it and just buy a new one.. I would be thinking hard along those lines.

  • External HDD not spinning

    Hi guys,
My newish LaCie 500Gb Quattro D2 external has decided to halt on me. When I plug it in, I get a power light, but there doesn't seem to be any movement from the drive (when I switch it to 'on', the light flashes 5 times then stays on.
My question is this: is there any chance that I can get my data back off it without sending it to an exhorbantly expensive data recovery company (charges of $250+ --> I'm a student and can't afford this). It's under warranty, but LaCie take no responsibility for data, and I need this data back!
    What are my chances?
    cheers!

If by "doesn't seem to be any movement from the drive" you mean that it doesn't spin up, it could be a problem with the power supply in the LaCie case or its connection to the drive power connector. You need to determine whether you have an actual drive failure or a case failure. Will LaCie permit you to open up the case without voiding your warranty? I would remove the drive from the case and connect it to a desktop system's power supply to see if it spins up.

  • Second disk (HDD) spins down occasionally, ignoring energy setting.

I've UNCHECKED the setting "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" because I find no value in this. Yet my second disk (HDD) occasionally spins down when the computer is left idle for a while. (My first disk is an SSD). It's all apple-made, no custom or user changes inside. It's not a big deal, but I know spinning down and up again adds wear to the disk and it's something I'd rather not have the disk doing. It's ignoring the setting, why is this? and can I do something about it?

I was affraid that would be the case, blah! Well it's an HDD so I can hear it click when it spins down and back up. It's mostly just happening when the computer is idle for a long time but it's still a wasteful act because it usually spins right back up again after a while and it SEEMS this time around it won't wait equally long before it spins down again but does so relatively quickly again as if the drive figured something minor just happened and that it can just go "back to sleep" when it's done, which on it's turn adds to the wear if I'd leave it like this for hours on since SOME activity is always present from time to time on any disk.

  • Thunderbolt Drives won't spin down and sleep in Mountain Lion

In Lion when I put my iMac to sleep, the external Thunderbolt Drives would spin down and sleep as well. In Mountain Lion, when I put my iMac to sleep, the external Thunderbolt drives do NOT spin down and sleep. Can anyone confirm or duplicate this issue?

I have the same behavior, however I'm using the TB to FW800 adapter. I have 6 FW800 drives in a chain. All would sleep when MBP was put to sleep under 10.8.5 (ironically fixed after 10.8.4, now broken in 10.9).
Seeing the same issue with native TB drives makes me think it's a problem with TB software in general.

  • Hard Drive Spin Down....Good or Bad??

'Two questions, really, but first some background.  I have an earlier Mac Pro running 10.7.3 (as I recall).  I also have a Sonos music system.  All the hard drive bays in the Mac Pro are occupied.  The first has a 2 TB Western Digital RE that has my OS and all my files on it.  Bay's 2 and 3 have two 3TB drives from Hitachi which are mirrored and serve as my internal daily backup which is run and cloned by CCC.  The fourth drive is another RE that has copies of all my music.  I simply copy my two iTunes folders and any other music I want the Sonos system to access to this fourth drive.  My reason for doing this is that I wanted to minimize the run time of my main hard drive as not so long ago, I had two Seagate drives go belly up on me.  All the music on the fourth drive (that serves the Sonos system) comes from my main hard drive which is backed up to the two mirrored internal drives as well as a G-Technolgy mirrored external drive, so I'm not concerned with backing up the drive serving the Sonos system.  So......
Question one is:  Which is better for drives in general, to keep them spinning all the time, or to allow or force them to spin down if they aren't being accessed?
Question two is:  If it is better to spin down a drive, how can I selectively spin down some drives and not others?
For instance, I'm thinking that it is better to spin drives down, then I'd like to be able to spin down drive #1 with my OS but not the Sonos drive because the Sonos system prefers that the drive not spin down or there are connection errors.
Thanks for all your answers and suggestions!

I understand the limitions of mirrored drives, but my main drive is not mirrored.  What is mirrored are my backup drives.  One daily backup onto mirrored drives in bay's 3 and 4 in the Mac Pro.  And a less frequent backup on mirrored drives that are stored in a fireproof safe in the garage.  Should my main, non-mirrored drive fail (hopefully it'll be a long time as it's an enterprise class drive), I've then got any one of four cloned drives to choose from.  Of course, I would choose the most recent ones that are internal, but should something catastrophic like a fire occur, I'd then have two identical cloned and bootable drives in the garage.
I recognize that in the case of a real catastrophy, the drives in the garage won't be as current as the drives in the Mac Pro, but in both cases, the backups themselves are pretty robust because they are mirrored.  If one backup drive fails, the other will likely be fine and I can then easily proceed from there.
It set up properly, mirrored drives offer some great redundency in case of hard drive failure.  What prompted me to go this route was three drive failures in one year, all of which were Seagate Barracuda drives and relatively new.  And two of them were backup drives.  My backup drives are now Hitachi and mirrored in case one dies.  And CCC makes it so I can just plug the backup drive into my #1 bay and I'm back up in business.  Except for MS Office which somehow limits the number of times it can be cloned and you have to call MS and get a new product code.  Easy to do, but a pain.  I learned this as a result of swapping cloned drives in and out of my wife's MacBook.  It all worked perfectly until I did it once too many times and MS wouldn't load.  Hence the call to MS.
    Thanks for all your feedback!
Oh, and any info on controling which drives spin down and which don't?

  • AEBS prevents my USB drive from spinning down

    Hi all,
I thought I would share my concerns about connecting USB external drive with AirPort Extreme. I've seen several post here talking about that issue, but they didn't solve my problem.
Otherwise great product, AirPort Extreme n prevents my WD MyBook 500GB disk from spinning down when not in use. I bought that particular disc, because of its ability to go to sleep when not accessed for a period of time. It works great when connected to my MacBook via FW400 or USB 2.0, but when I use it via AiPort Disk utility and connect to AEBS the disk will not spin down, keep running and getting hot. I am concerned with that fact, because it consumes more energy and will shorten disc life (yes, it is not a server graded disc, as most of USB ones, and it was not designed to spin continously).
I read some posts about Spotlight indexing the drive, but that is not true because of three facts:
    - when connected via USB 2.0 or FW400 the disc spins down.
    - when I left it for two hours it was still spinning - Spotlight should have finished indexing by then right?
    - even if I eject network drives from the Desktop, breaking the connection with my MB it is still spinning.
There seems to be a problem with AE itself. AEBS seem to keep the disc busy all the time or the disc thinks that's the situation.
From what I've read this is not MyBook only case. People with Lacie, Maxtor and other brands are having the same problem.
At this point I have no solution to this. I disconnected the drive and access it via FW400 only. That's a shame, because Apple advertises AirPort Extreme using USB drive connectivity as a major selling point. I think that situation is unacceptable. A disc spinning 24/7 is asking for trouble.
If someone has a solution to that problem, please share it with the forum readers, if not we will have to wait for Apple to fix this. I hope someone from Apple is reading this.

Other posts indicate you can solve this by privatizing the drive in Spotlight's preferences. I haven't tried this because I like the drive indexed--it is a shared data drive after all.
I turn the drive off manually when I'm not using it. Unfortunately, the Airport doesn't recognize the drive (or printers that I've turned off, for that matter) when I turn it back on. The only solution I've found is to restart the Airport. Any ideas on this problem?

  • HD won't spin down automatically

IMac DV+ "450" ruby red. Panther 10.39 - no extra software installed. Firmware update done as recommended. Original HD still inside.
Replaced CD drive with DVD drive >> set HD to slave.
Problem now: Energy saver will not spin down HD although checkbox is checked. Is this normal (in my configuration since HD is on Slave)?
    Thanks, Martin

I'm confused now, Martin. Your original post said that this was an "iMac DV+ "450" ruby red"
All of the 450's (they came in Ruby, Sage and Indigo ) had a DV drive fitted as standard. As you say, the 400's didn't.
Can you spin the drive down manually, using the sleep command under the Apple menu?
The slave issue could be involved, but, as I said, this was a very common problem with the Summer 2000's anyway. (I suffered it myself)
David, I must have dealt with hundreds of queries about exactly this issue with the Summer 2000 iMacs here over the years (though I don't look in here as often as I used to). I promise you, at least with the drives originally fitted, the very common problem of spin down failure of the drives in this model was directly asociated with increased bearing whine and wear over time. The hard drives factually fitted to these machines were generally a "LC" (low cost) model, with a reduced warrantee period.
Of course, as you say, if a new drive is fitted this may not be as big an issue.
    Cheers

  • 7.2.1 - AirDisk won't spin down under Tiger?

It seems that when the airdisk is mounted under my Tiger machine using AEBSn firmware 7.2.1, it does not spin down. However, when I unmount it, it eventually spins down. On my Leopard machine, even with it still mounted, it eventually spins down.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Just confirmed again. My leopard macbook with the airdisk mounted will still allow it to spin down. however, with my tiger machine mounting the airdisk, it NEVER spins down, even when i'm away from the computer, unless i unmount it in tiger.
is this a known issue in 7.2.1 when drives are mounted under tiger? if so, i'll try 7.1.1 again. thanks.

  • T440p secondary HDD spins down

    Hello,
In my T440p, I replaced the HDD with a SSD, and put the HDD in a caddy (bought from hddcaddy.com). My problem is that after booting, right at the Windows login-screen, the HDD spins down ~1 out of 5 times. I can't find it in disk management after that happens. When the HDD does keep spinning after login, it works fine.
What I know is that the cause of the problem isn't the caddy, neither the HDD. HDDcaddy sent me a second caddy, and I tried with different HDD's. So it must be software-related.
I played around in the BIOS, but nothing seemed to work. (BTW, instead of the 'ThinkPad' loading screen, I now have a 'Lenovo' loading screen while booting. What's causing that?)
Does anybody experiences the same problem as me? Because I couldn't find anything on the forum. Help is appreciated.
    Greetings
    ThinkPad T440p 20AN006VMH - Win 8.1 - i7 4700MQ - SSD: 250 GB Samsung 840 EVO (internal) - 500 GB SATA 7200rpm (HDD caddy)

My T440p has a spinner in a Lenovo Ultrabay, the system drive is a Toshiba SSD that I ordered with the system.  I do not have the same problem.
Some differences in setup, however:  I use fingerprint authentication at boot, that carries through to Windows login, and I am using Win 7 Pro.
I set the drive timeout to spin it down purposely once Windows is loaded, but otherwise it starts spinning and stays spinning on power up.
