T440s and linux and webcam software

Can anybody recommend a good program on linux to take photos and video with the webcam?
I normally use Cheese but this seems to freeze when taking video.
Thanks,

Thanks for your answer . Before going on, it would be nice if others people could give me some advice about Linux Debian wheezy and the 64 bit version. Nevertheless, AtliJarl, I have always hesitated to install Fedora. You seem to know Ubuntu, Mint which are two children of Debian. Is it hard to change to Fedora, a Red Hat child ? Indeed, I am a software developer and many oracle softwares are only available in rpm packages. So, what are the others advantages of Fedora ? Thanks.
Edit: this morning, I have downloaded fedora 20 after doing some researches. It seems to be a good OS. I am going to try it with the live CD. Then, I will use clonezilla in order to save the Ubuntu partitions and I will install fedora. Thanks a lot for your link.

  • Looking for DELL Webcam Central software and the webcam software updates

My laptop is DELL XPSM1530. I read that the webcam was made by Creative Technology.
Recently, I read in DELL.com that there is a software named DELL Webcam Central.
It was said that it can improve the camera performance.
I have looked for it in DELL.com but I did not found it and I also have looked it here but I got nothing.
Where can I get it? Is it the same as Webcam Manager / Webcam Central that has been installed in my laptop here?
And if it the same, where can I have the software updates?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
You will stand a better chance getting in touch with Dell, the download site here does not offer the mentioned webcam software.

  • Toshiba 32GB Flash Drive and lock software for Ubuntu

Got myself a 32GB Toshiba Usb Flash Drive which comes with lock software. Works fine in Vista but if I stick it in my Ubuntu driven desktop, the files on the drive can be accessed or copied or deleted, so the software what comes with the drive is pretty useless as security.
    Any suggestions please?

    Hi Gumnut,
What Toshiba flash drive you have exactly because there are different models on the market? Im not owner of such flash drive but as far as I know Toshiba doesnt support Linux so this software will not run on Linux so the drive isnt locked.
You can also contact Toshiba directly. I found an e-mail address on Toshiba memory product page:

  • Cloning OS and DB software

    Hello,
we need to install up to 70 database servers based on SuSe linux 8 SLES.
The servers will run exactly the same configuration (same proccessors, same harddisks and partionions, ...).
    The database-version will be 9.2.x.x.
We will use two harddisks running in RAID-1 mode for the OS and the database software and 4 harddisks running in RAID-5 mode for the databases.
Would it be supported to do one installation by using the standard installers (SuSe and Oracle) and cloning this installation on the other systems (e.g. by doing disk mirroring)?
Would it be supported to include the databases in this cloning-process (sid and global name of these databases will be the same)?
After cloning we would change the system specific information like IP-addresses.
Has anybody expierence in cloning OS and db software?
Does anybody know any tools which could be used to do this cloning (especially handling the RAID-5)?
    Thanks in advance!
    Mike

    Hi Mike
Yes, I have experience clonning Oracle Servers and databases includes in it.
If you decide mirroring the disks you will have any problem because all the software Oracle is stored all in disk ( Configuration files and so on ).
Once you mirror the disk you have only to change.
    * The host name or IP address in the listener.ora and the same in the tnsnames.ora file and that's it.

I have a macbook Pro which had Mobileme. I have joined ICloud, but my Calendar does not sync. How do I fix this? I do not see an ICloud Icon on my laptop and the software is updated.

This is the situation with Snow Leopard and existing iCloud accounts:
You will be able to access email and calendars on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point.
Address Book won't sync: this page has a convoluted hack to make it sync which has been reported as working (and as not working by others). I've not tried it.
There are a couple of alternative syncing services you might like to consider, though they're not particularly cheap:
Soho Organizer can sync Calendars and Contacts with iCloud on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. A single user licence (multiple machines allowed) is $99.99.
Fruux syncs Calendars, Tasks and Contacts beetween a wide variety of devices (not using the iCloud server) including Snow Leopard and above, Windows Outlook and Thunderbird, Linux Thunderbird, and iOS and Android devices - see their compatibility chart (click the blue 'i' for a caveat about Snow Leopard). It's free for one user, two shares, two devices; above that pricing starts at €4 per month.
(I have no connection with these firms and have not tried Soho Organizer, though both have had good reports and I've found Fruux to work well.)

  • Audio and Webcam issue

Recently, my HP ENVY dv6-7210us Notebook PC has stopped being able to play any sound from anything. The issue includes several programs being unable to run audio files due to this, rather than just playing the file and no audio coming out. Additionaly, I find out a few days later that my built in webcam also is unable to work, although a USB webcam may still work if plugged in. I am close to assuming this may be a hardware issue rather than software, but I am making sure all my bases are covered.

    Hi @InsanitySpiral
Welcome to the HP Support Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I see that you are having some audio and webcam problems. I will be happy to help you with this. Are you using Windows 8 or 8.1? For the webcam problems try this HP document Webcam Troubleshooting.
For the audio issue do you get any sound if you plug in a set of headphones?  I have included a number of troubleshooting steps below and a couple of documents as well.  There was an issue with a Windows Update that was causing sound problems about a month and half ago.  I don't imagine that is the issue at this point but if nothing else works there is a workaround for the Windows Update below.
The first thing to try is this HP support document No Sound from Speakers. It has a number of good troubleshooting steps including using the built-in Windows troubleshooter.
Another solution is to uninstall the driver manually then force Windows to reinstall it. Follow the steps below to do that.
Step 1: Open Device Manager and open Sound, video and game controller section.
Step 2: Right click on your audio driver and select Uninstall.
Step 3: Restart the computer. Windows will then force in the driver on startup.
The last troubleshooting step is to try creating a new user account to see if the issue is only affecting the one account. This can happen is something has been corrupted in the one user profile. This HP support document Managing User Accounts and Logins look under the section Creating a new account in Windows 8.
Here is the workaround for the Windows Update:
At this point, unless you want to reinstall the operating system, the only other option is to tackle the update, KB2962407.
Uninstalling the Windows Update, then hiding it, is the only method of eliminating the issue if it caused by this update. Here is the procedure for uninstalling the update:
Step 1. Go into Control Panel, then click on “Programs and Features”.
Step 2. Click on “View Installed Updates”. Look for the update with the ID number KB2962407.
Step 3. Right-click on the update and select “Uninstall”. Restart the computer.
Next, here is the procedure for hiding the update:
Step 1. Go into Control Panel, then click on “Windows Updates”.
Step 2. Click on “Check for Updates”. When the process is completed, is should find important update(s) available. Clicking on the message will open a window where the important update(s) is.
Step 3. Right-click on the KB2962407 update and select “Hide Update”. This will prevent the update from being installed next time Windows Updates are being installed.

  • Fingerprint support on Windows 10 - ThinkPad T440 and newer

On Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, ThinkPad T/W/X systems use fingerprint software.  T440 and later models use Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro.  This software was needed because those versions of Windows did not natively support fingerprint readers.
Starting with Windows 10, Microsoft has added full support for fingerprint readers into the operating system.  You only need a driver.  The fingerprint software is no longer needed, and should be uninstalled prior to upgrading to Windows 10.  The purpose of this guide is to help you upgrade your Win7/Win8/Win8.1 system to Windows 10, so that you can successfully continue using your fingerprint reader.
Before upgrading to Windows 10, you need to make sure you know your Windows password.  Whether you have fingerprints enrolled or not, the Windows 10 upgrade process will ask you for your Windows password, so you must know it.
Below are the steps I took to successfully upgrade a T450 system running Windows 7.  My system has 2 fingers enrolled, and I also have preboot authentication where I use my fingerprint to enter the BIOS Power-On password.
Open Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall a Program.  Scroll down to Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro and then click on "Uninstall/Change".
Click "Yes" at the prompt about "Are you sure...?"
When the uninstallation finishes, click on "Finish" to restart the computer as prompted.
After the reboot, log into Windows using your Windows password.
    Upgrade to Windows 10
After the upgrade, open Device Manager (type Device Manager into the search bar)
Expand the category for “Biometric devices”
Double-click on the fingerprint device. On my system, it’s called “Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=0017)
    Click on the “Driver” tab
Click on the “Update Driver…” button
Choose the option for “Search automatically for updated driver software…”
You should see a message like “Windows has successfully updated your driver software”. Click on “Close”
Back on the “Driver” tab, confirm that the Driver Version is now 4.5.308.0 or later. This is the latest version of the driver as of July 31, 2015
Click on “Close”, and then close Device Manager.
The next step is to enroll fingerprints in Windows 10, to do this, we use the new Windows 10 feature called “Windows Hello”. To get to it, open Settings -> Accounts -> Sign-in options
To use Windows Hello, Microsoft requires that you first set a PIN. Under the PIN section, click on the Add button to create a PIN.  Follow the on-screen prompts to create your PIN.
Under the Windows Hello section, find the fingerprint item and click on the “Set up” button. Follow the on-screen prompts to enroll your finger.  Enroll more fingers if you want to.
Windows 7 only: You might see a problem where the “Set up” button is greyed out, and you can’t click on it.  You might also see red text at the top of the Sign-in options windows that says “Some settings are managed by your organization”.  As of July 31, 2015, this is a bug that we are working with Microsoft to solve.  You can manually fix it yourself by modifying the registry.  Download the attached .reg file, double-click it, and then click on “Yes” to confirm that you want to modify the registry.  Reboot the PC and then go back to step 17.
Any questions or comments, please leave them here.  I hope this was helpful.  Thanks for reading!
    NOTE ABOUT T430 AND EARLIER:
These systems (with Authentec fingerprint readers) use ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software which is still needed on Windows 10.  It can be downloaded here:  http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds036923

I too was fighting with my fingerprint reader after my upgrade from Windows 7 to 10.  I have a Thinkpad W700 with an Authentec AES2810 reader.  I think my computer would fall into the "Note about T430 and Earlier" section, but the ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software would not detect my Authentic reader.  What worked for me was to uninstall all of the Lenovo software that I had from Windows 7 as the initial steps (1-5) indicate.  In place of steps 6-14 (because Microsoft does not include the Authentec driver), install the Authentec WBF driver package from the link below on Dell's website.  It does not have anything inside it that is branded just for Dell machines.... just the Authentec WBF compatible driver. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=DFDJ9 After that, continue with steps 15-17 to set up Windows Hello to enable fingerprint based logins to Windows 10. My initial issues on all this was to get LastPass fingerprint scanning to work again.  As best I can understand, it accesses the fingerprint reader through the Windows Biometric Framework.  This driver allowed not only Windows to work with the fingerprint reader as Microsoft intended, but got LastPass working too.

  • USB devices and Webcam not working or installing on Pavilion Laptop

    Hi there,
    I have a HP Pavilion Dm3 1030 sa,
For a while now certain USB devices have just not worked on the laptop, specifically printers and mice, despite me reinstalling the drivers for those devices on the laptop. I tried the devices on other computers and they worked fine.
This was annoying but I put up with it.
Now the webcam and microphone have stopped working and are no longer recognised by the computer. I have reinstalled the webcam software but cannot find the drivers for it. The software (arc soft webcam) says the inbuilt webcam is not connected.
I have been able to get my iphone to connect via usb and usb drives work most of the time. I don't really know what is going on. When I look at devices that don't work in device manager It says that there is a USB I/O error. I have tried reinstalling the drivers using device manager but that didn't work either. Any advice would be appreciated. Not being able to use a mouse is annoying as track pads are slow.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!
