T440s display won't wake up from password-protected sleep mode

The display on my new T440s stays off and cannot be recovered, when it is in password-protected sleep mode (or when it has gone to sleep from password-protected screen saver mode). The only way to recover is to press the power button to shut down completely, and reboot the computer.
 When I remove the password protection from sleep mode,  the display turns on and off as expected during sleep/wake cycles.
Have any of you experienced this?  Is there a fix?  I do want to use password protection in sleep mode for security.

I posted this yesterday on another Mac site and thought I'd post it here, too, since my experience is similar to rmckillen's, and BobThe Developer has an explanation for it (thanks!). I've had my 15" MacBook Pro for almost 3 months, and it's been working fine until now. Tonight after it went to sleep while open, I tried to wake it up and the screen stayed dark, though you could faintly see what was on it. When I tried pressing the power button, I could see through the darkness that I was getting the usual message asking if I wanted to shut down. I waited for the approximately 2 minutes for that to happen, and then the machine appeared to shut down for a few seconds--only then the dark screen with faintly visible image of what was really there appeared again. I tried closing the machine and opening it again, but that didn't help, nor did clicking the mouse. The only thing that worked was forcing a quit by pressing command-control-power all at once. The machine shut down, and then when I turned it on again, everything was back to normal. My question now is, should I bring my machine in to Apple about this--will it be something they can fix, or is it just a problem I'll have to live with (or will the next operating system address it?)?     I don't want to enter a password for the screen saver (I'd have to do it 500 times a day). A password for waking from sleep mode only would be very helpful.

    There is just the one option that password protects both in the Security pane of the System Preferences.

    It's a brand new notebook.I've done nothing on it, other than installing Windows updates and creating recovery disks.I set the "Turn off display after" option to 1Minute.IMPORTANT: I set display brightness all the way to zero, the lowest setting possible, using either the keyboard keys, or the brightness option in Windows.Leave the notebook idle for a minute, the display sleeps like it should (the notebook is set to sleep after 30 minutes, it's only the display that sleeps, the notebook is still awake).Move the mouse, press keys on the keyboard, the screen does not come back up. The computer is still up and running-i can toggle keyboard backlight On/Off using the keys, but the display won't wake up.Press the "Brightness +" button on the keyboard, the display wakes up. This is the only way to wake it up. The other option is to press and hold the power button, force a shut down, and start the computer again.This happens ONLY when "brightess" is set to the lowest level. If brightness is set to even one level above the lowest, the issue cannot be reproduced. Moving the mouse or pressing any key on the keyboard will wake the display up in this situation.Both Intel HD graphics 5500 and GTX 850M drivers are up to date.BIOS is up to date as well.Battery/ Plugged in does not make a difference. If the display brightness is set to lowest, the screen will ALWAYS fail to wake up, irrespective of which power source is in use. What do I do?     Thanks for your reply Avenger Well, I called up HP tech support.The lady took remote control of my notebook and tried numerous things in the registry (regedit).But the issue could not be solved. She then arranged for an on-site support engineer to visit my house.The Engineer showed up right on the next day, and tried the following:- Updated ALL drivers, even the ones which were already up to date!Checked with my desktop monitor, the issue cannot be reproduced on the external monitor- the external monitor will wake up on moving the mouse, but the notebook monitor stayed dim (no backlight).Opened the laptop, took out the display cable, cleaned it with some solution he had, put everything back together- issue not resolved, external monitor wakes up but notebook monitor stayes dimmed. This is not the only problem I was having with the notebook, the other problems are:Battery would stop charging when the notebook is switched OFF, and the charger is turned ON and OFF a couple of times.The battery lock doesn't "click" in place, it slides automatically to the "unlock" position, it's loose.There's a dead pixel on the display. He offered me two choices: 1> Replace motherboard (to solve battery not charging issue), replace chassis (to solve the battery lock issue), and replace display panel (to solve the dim display + dead pixel issue). =======OR======= 2> Return the whole notebook back to HP, and get a new notebook (same model) in exchange.  I picked option 2. We shared a cup of coffee, and the tech left (he was very nice and friendly). The next day, I got an email from HP, with a PDF attachment, asking me to take my laptop, along with a hard copy of the email, and payment invoice, to the HP store. HP store took my computer back, but they didn't have a replacement ready, they asked me to come after 7 days to pick up a new notebook (same model). I really loved my Envy. It's a very nice looking laptop. Hope the replacement I get won't have these weird issues. I'll update the thread when I get the replacement. Thanks for your help

    We have a MacBook Alum running 10.6.2 with 4gb ram.
    We recently upgraded to 10.6.2 from Leopard and this issue started to happen.
    It seems that as the MacBook goes to sleep or goes to the screensaver mode, the screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep or screensaver mode without a hard reboot.
    Is Apple aware of this issue? It did not happen with the previous version of Leopard. This issue arrived when we upgraded to Snow Leopard. Other than the sleep issue, SL is rock solid. Kudos to Apple for producing a great OS!

    Have you contacted AppleCare via telephone to make them aware of this issue? It definitely doesn't sound like normal behavior. What sort of troubleshooting have you done so far on the issue? What sort of settings do you have on your screen saver? Password protected? Custom iPhoto slideshow?
    What if you manually sleep the machine by closing the lid or engaging it via software (via the Apple menu) does the screen have the issue in both scenarios?

  • G3 Bronze Keyboard won't wake up from sleep

    I have a hand-me-down Powerbook G3 Lombard 400 Mhz (bronze keyboard), with a dead main battery. It works great with the power adapter, and has just enough charge for me to move it from one outlet to another without shutting down. I'm trying to set it up for use as an Itunes server connected to my home stereo, which is fine because it will always be plugged in.
    The problem is that the laptop won't wake up from sleep. This morning I noticed that the display and HD seemed to be sleeping, but the fan/processor buzzing noise was still going (there were no lights other than the little green light on my PCI card). I couldn't figure out any combination of keyboard or power key strokes that would either wake it up or shut it down. I unplugged it, waited half an hour or so, and it finally shut down. I then plugged in, hit power, and it started and booted perfectly (after the expected disk check for abnormal shutdown). Then this afternoon, the whole thing was sleeping (I think -- no sound, no lights other than PCI card light), and again it wouldn't wake up. Again, I unplugged, let it power down (waited for the PCI light do die), the replugged and it started up just fine.
    Any idea what gives? Or what I do when it's sleeping? Right now, I have changed the power saving settings so that it never goes to sleep, but I'd really like to let it sleep when people forgot to turn it off...

    There are many causes for sleep issues and you just have to wade through them one at a time.
    You can always force a Lombard or newer powerbook to shut down by pressing/holding the power button until it turns off. As you have noted, this is an undesirable process since you can corrupt the HD.
    I would start the troubleshooting in this manner:
    1. Unplug all peripherals (PC cards, mouse, everything).
    2. Reset the power manager:

    3. Now put the powerbook to sleep via the Special menu, wait a minute or so, then wake.
    4. If no success, restart while pressing the shift key until you see the message 'extensions off', then release. Now test sleep/wake.
    If number #3 is successful, one of you peripherals is probably the troublemaker. If still having issues, please post back with more details if possible.

  • It won't wake up from sleep after I open it. If I close it and then open it, it doesn't wake up for at least 5 minutes.

    just upgrade my macbook air to yosemite. now when i physically close the computer and open it back up, it won't wake up from sleep mode. I tried pressing the power button, but it wouldnt turn on. Then once it somehow turned on by itself, I tried a PRAM and SMC reset. Then I tried closing and opening the computer again and I still had the same problem. nothing has worked. when i do get the computer on, i randomly goes into sleep mode again. I've check the settings for display and it says after 45 minutes of nothing it will sleep.

    Step 1
    Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem.     Step 2
    If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select

    is checked, uncheck it and test.

    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
              DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
    (not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You may see one or more reports with a name that begins with "Sleep Wake Failure" followed by a date. Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
    I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
    Step 5
    In the Console window, select
              DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ Diagnostic and Usage Messages
    In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.)
    You may see one or more lines like this:
    com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
    If you do see that, and you did everything in the preceeding steps, then you're dealing with an internal hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • G4 DP 450 won't wake up from sleep....

    My PowerMac DP 450 (Giga Designs 1.8Ghz DP) has a bizarre problem. If event activity is idle for an hour or so the screen will go blank (even though there is the flurry screen saver running at the time) and it won't wake up from the sleep mode. I have to press the reset switch to recover. This issue pre-dates the processor upgrade so it isn't the processor.
    Any ideas on what is causing this? How do you diagnose this issue?
    If I leave a DVD in the machine and let it paly all day. This won't happen. Something weird about idle events triggering this.

    If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
    Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
    Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following lines:
    reset-nvram
    press Return on keyboard
    set-defaults
    press Return
    reset-all
    press Return
    Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
    Still did'nt work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.

    G5 won't wake up from sleep & fans will go to high speed within a few minutes of it going to sleep. Whether I put it to sleep or it goes to sleep on it's own per my preferences in energy saver. I have to manually shut it down by holding the power button in. I ran the system hardware dvd and results were good. I have repaired permissions, reset the PRAM.
    Any ideas?

    Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, test sleep in Safe Mode, reboot when it completes.
    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

    Hi...so finally got my X1C today. One thing I am noticing is that the machine won't wake up from sleep mode when I press any key on the keyboard -- it only wake up by pressing the power key. This is a bit unexpected to me. Is it by design, and is there any way to change this?

    Does it awaken from stand-by if you press the Fn key? That's been the ThinkPad standard for as long as I can remember.

    First things first:
    Update your profile (equipent, OSX, etc)
    In Lion MS office2004 is not compatible, are you stIll using it?
    Do the SMC RESET and do the PRAM reset.

    I'll explain the problem in details, right after hibernate or standby IF you press power button the led goes blue, fan starts, HD led lights, battery led, power adapter led (if its connected), and cd player make sound as if it looking for a CD, and THEN fan stopped, HD led goes off, no sound of CD, leaves u only with power button led ON, a nice frustrating Blue
    after waiting, u eventually gave up, turn it off by along press on power button, and then no matter wut u do, simply won't start only same sounds and leds as mentioned previously, nothing on the screen as if its dead !! no logo no nothing.
    give it a time ( about 15min with battery connected, or 5min or less with battery out) Press the power Button, THERE U GO, works perfectly !!
    same case with shutdown but not always as hibernate and standby (though once it did wakeup from standby!!), but most of the time after shutdown u have to wait 15min!!
    no USB flash memory connected or anything else !
    i did install winXP pro SP2 on it and installed the drivers and Microsoft HOT fixes also, but problem remains.
    i also did recovery from the recovery CD that comes with it, also no good !!
    i noticed that if u disconnected the battery the unit needs shorter time to be able to wake up or boot. about 5 min.
    wut kills me is that the unit works perfectly and i like it !!! i only got this issue with it !!
    so wut i need to know is this: Is there anyway to make sure weather if its a software problem or a hardware problem?
    its not easy to go to the local service cuz its in another city!! i need to try first wutever it takes to fix it on my own!

  • Powerbook G4 won't wake up from sleep

    My 4 1/2 year old powerbook G4 won't wake up from sleep anymore. After I close the lid, or even manually put it to sleep, I can still hear the HD run. The backlight on the top of the lid never lights up and when I open the lid the blank screen doesn't do anything. The only way for me to work around this issue is to power down the laptop and start it up again. Since I've been having this issue every program that I use take forever to load. The spinning color wheel is the bane of my existence! I tried resetting the PRAM, I used Onyx to repair file permissions, and am out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    How incredibly strange. I am having exactly the same problems with my computer. I just started the same behavior today. I have tried using MacJanitor, repaired permissions, verified disk, but it still will not go to sleep properly. S.M.A.R.T status is verified
    I have tested my RAM as described above with no problems surfacing. Anyone else have any ideas that we can try. When I get home on Sunday I will try some more intense investigative tools including re-installing OSX 10.5
    By the way, I am running 10.5.4 on a 15" 1.5Ghz G4 Powerbook with 1.25GB of RAM and 28.9GB harddrive free.
    Another strange thing I have also observed is that it now takes 10 minutes to start up. 5 minutes on the Apple screen with pinwheel, and then 5 minutes with the blue screen before the cursor appears. After that point startup is normal. Also, even though Disk Utility shows 28 GB free on my harddrive when I try to copy something, it says that I do not have enough free space on my harddrive.
    Do you suppose this means that my harddrive is on the way out? Is this also the case of the original poster?

    Can you say more about thermal cut-off?  My mac has beene having problems waking from sleep and I have noticed that I hear the fan running ever so slightly in the background.  When I depress the power button for a second the fan shuts off. 
    Just open the side an dlook to see which fan it is.  The lower fands are easy to see as well as the video card fan.
    When you push the power button and that fan goes off is the machine now fully off?  No power light?  No fans spinning?   Now drives spinning? 
    I don't recall what I did when my machine shut off with the one exhaust fan running.  I think the obvious thing I would have tried would have been to push power button for 10 seconds to shut it down fully.  That or actually pull the plug.
    When this happens the only way to use my Mac is to restart via the power button.
    Then I guess that answers the first question.  It must have turned off since pushing the power button again was the normal reboot.
       I can't find any helpful info on thermal cut-off so I was wondering if you could explain what it is, what causes it, and more importantly what I can do to fix it?
    That was my term for it.  What else could it be?  Without its fan video card would get extremely hot and throw off all that heat.  Whats the point of having temperature sensors in so many places other than to use that info to protect the machine against damage due to overheating?  So my assumption was card gets hot, sensor (probably the pci slot 1 temperature sensor) senses it, kills the machine.  It's also seems logical to me that the circuit(s) handling temperature overloads would want to keep a exhaust fan running to dump the heat out of the machine to further protect any damage from the heat.
