T440s Touchpad Hardware Fault

Just a query about the touchpad/trackpad on the T440s.
I have found that there is a ~2cm wide column on the very left of the touchpad that does not register a click when depressed. It also feels very spongey and different relative to the rest of the touchpad. As a result it makes general use, and use with the trackpoint extremely difficult as a good percentage of the time a click is not registered in this area.
I was just wondering if the touchpad is infact supposed to be like this and it is a nonissue and just a really terrible feature, and if other people have this issue?
Also would this be something that I would be able to possibly fix myself somehow - taking out the touchpad and putting it back in again for example?

kwibatman,
This could be a hardware issue and I would encourage you to contact service after trying a few updates.
1) We have been releasing a series of new Synaptics drivers - a release on Nov, one on Dec 17th, and a most recent one on Jan 7 here -> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS034647
2) We have a firmware update for the touchpad here-> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS039494
Can you apply these and see if the situation improves?
If you still have trouble after this, please give service a call to check out the hardware.
Best regards,
Mark

  • PCMCIA Hardware Fault - Tecra 750CDT

    Hi...
I have two identical Toshiba Tecra 750CDT laptops.
One machine will not recognise when PCMCIA cards are inserted, no
reaction to it whatsoever, no status lights on cards.
On the other machine cards are recognised immediately and work
    perfectly.
When I swap the hard drive and WiFi card from the 'good' machine to the
'bad' machine, the bad machine boots normally with seemingly everything
working normally, except for no reaction to the WiFi card, not even a
    staus light on the card.
Swap back to the good machine and all works perfectly again.
Ive taken this to mean that there is a hardware fault in the PCMCIA
    circuitry of the bad machine.
Can anybody tell me whether there are any protection devices, fuses or
whatever, on laptop PCMCIA circuitry ?
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

    Hi
This unit is about 9 years old and it is not known to me but I recommend you to check all BIOS settings. Maybe you will find something there.

  • KM2M Combo-L - Hardware Fault DDR Upgrade

Am having problems upgrading RAM on the KM2m Combo-L (MS-6738)
All working perfectly with 1 x 512Mb DDR RAM in DDR Slot 1 (Bank 0 & 1) - soon as I upgrade with second 512Mb/256Mb stick in Slot 2 (Bank 2 & 3), system becomes unstable and crashes unexpectedly in WinXP. All RAM checked in other machines/Slot 1 - OK - Memtest reports no probs. All BIOS Settings normal - all 4 DDR banks are seen OK. Have 3 of these boards - all the same problem. Is this a known hardware fault on second DDR slot?
    Specs:

Yeah, matching PC266 CL2.5 Kingston - all OK in Slot 1, only prob when I try to use Slot 2

  • New ipod touch, hardware fault(?)

So,I've bought an ipod touch 4g,8gb on last friday, and I could connect it once to my PC,it was working well. Then on the other day,the accumulator was submerged,I've tried to do something with it,but nothing happens, and it's not even possible to connect it to my pc,nothing happens when I try to do so.I've just tried it with 3 different computers, still the same. Can it be a hardware fault? If it is,is it possible to get a new one instead? :O
I have no idea what to do right now..

To get a computer to see the iPOd try:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    and/or
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
Otherwise, as theother poster said, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store or call AppleCare under the provisions of your warranty.

  • Bought a new 64 GB 4S version, but "About" shows only 13,6 GB. Any suggestions except for hardware fault ??

  • T440s touchpad and trackpoint issue

I have a new T440s which came with Windows 8, and I upgraded to 8.1
    Nothing strange installed in it.
Sometimes touchpad and/or trackpoint don't work at all after turning on, rebooting or recovering from a suspended state.
It never fails while the system is running.
When it happens, I reboot and it works fine.
Already upgraded everything using System Update (BIOS, etc) and Windows Update.
Sounds to me as a driver issue, not a hardware issue... but I am not 100% sure.
    What should I do?
Should I reinstall any driver? How?

Uninstall the UltraNav driver from Device Manager or Programs and Features. Then run System Update; it should offer the UltraNav driver again.
    Alternatively, here's the manual download:

  • T440s - implementing hardware encryption on the OPAL compliant HDD

I just recently received my new T440s which I ordered with Windows 7 Professional and a 500GB HDD w/OPAL.  I choose the OPAL drive so that I could implement encryption at the hardware level.  I can't find information on how to implement/activate encryption on this drive in the User Manual.
    1)  Does anyone know how to do so and where the instructions are located?
    2)  My other question is regarding the 16GB M.2 Solid State Drive and the M.2 slots that comes with "most" T440s.  I didn't noticed till after I had placed my order that when I chose the OPAL compliant drive, this 16GB M.2 SSD disappeared from my configuration. Also least on my configuration there was no "third" M.2 card slot included.
If I run a new T440s configuration today on the Lenovo website and choose the OPAL compliant drive, the 16GB M.2 SSD disappears but the "3rd M.2 SSD Slot" remains in the configuration.
My question is can I install a 16GB M.2 SSD in my laptop at all?  or does having a hardware encrypted drive (which I don't know is even encrypting at this point) prevent me from using this cache?  configuring a new T440s today seems to include at least the third M.2 slot so it sounds like one should be able to install an SSD there.
    thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The 512GB option in current ThinkPads is not OPAL.
ATA-Security without encryption means that you must provide the password to the SSD's controller before the controller itself will provide access to the NAND chips (although the data on the NAND chips is not encrypted).  In theory it is possible to replace the password-locked controller with an unlocked controller and then get access to the data that way.  But I think it would take an NSA lab (or similar) to do this type of hardware hacking.
Another option is to just use software encryption like BitLocker.  On an SSD system, it is very fast and you won't notice a performance decrease in any real-world usage.

  • T440s TouchPad - Tap and Drag - Where is the "locking drags" setting?

On my ThinkPad X220 TouchPad properties there is a Tap & Drap setting for Locking Drags (see below). When this is enabled you can tap twice on an item (and hold on second tap) to engage drag and then this will be locked until you tap again. The benefit of this is it is possible to use multiple discrete touchpad movements to move an item across the desktop without having to engage drag mode each time.
    Link to picture
This feature is not specific to my X220. I find it on lots of laptops and I find it extremely useful.
However, on my T440s I can't find such a setting. Am I missing something?
Moderator note; picture(s) converted to link(s) About Posting Pictures In The Forums

I was looking for this setting too. It's extremely helpful when you need to select text. After googling around and finding little to no information I figured it out on my own. I grabbed my old laptop and compared the registry before and after checking the "locking drags" setting. All what you need to do is find the key:
    HKU\S-1-5-21-*a-bunch-of-numbers*-1001\Software\Synaptics\SynTP\TouchPadPS2TM2668,
and change the value of "Gestures" from 3 to 7. There is another similar key named TouchPadSMB2cTM2668. I was lazy to find out what key will affect the setting so I changed the valuge of "Gestures" too. After that log out / log in again or restart. It works perfectly for me.
    Hope this helps.

  • T440s touchpad symbol

Can someone tell me what is the chain like or dollar sign like symbol on the lower right end of the touchpad of Thinkpad T440s?? What does it mean or for what is it used? Thank you in advance.

    Hi Lyubomir,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per your query on touchpad, I checked with the attached image. The symbol on the touchpad is called as NFC logo (Near Field Communication).
Please Click here to get the complete information on that, for the complete details on NFC please refer to page no 35.
    Hope this helps!

  • X1 touchpad vs T440s touchpad?

My T440s has a horrible touchpad.  It's brand new and I already had to send it back to have it taken look at.  The sound is very loud and rattling.  It feels very cheap.... sort of like the spacebar button on most laptops (even MacBook Pro).  I've heard that X1 has a better/stiffer/quieter touchpad... is that true?  I couldn't find any specific details.

I've had my new T440s for about 2 months. Everything about it is excellent EXCEPT the new buttonless touchpad. It is so bad I have given up and can no longer effectively use it. I am trying to sell it this unit which paid $2,100. for. The touchpad is clunky, noisy and inaccurate no matter how much configuration I've done. This is a very disappointing, half baked attempt by Lenovo to emulate the MacBook touchpad. Shame on them for pushing this out.

Yes, I experienced the same problem. Two finger scrolling became unusable (way too fast and erratic) after an upgrade to UltraNav 17.0.12.60. Reverting back to 17.0.12.56 fixed the issue.
Please fix this in the next version. Thank you!

  • G550 Freezes Due To Hardware Faults?

Hi Guys, I would appreciate your opinion on this, I have a Lenovo G550 (Model 2958) which regularly freezes, the symptoms are this:
    * No blue screen or any failure warning.
    * Mouse will not move, and all buttons are non-responsive (requiring forced power off as only option).
    * Is not specific to any specific software, can happen with office, or firefox, or no windows open.
    * Can happen within 5-10 minutes of start up, or even after hours of functional working.
    * Usually happens on warmer days (above 20 degrees C).
    The laptop's spec is this:
Bios update 44 (Release Date 2010-04-30) (latest)
    2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo,
    4GB (DDR3 - 1066Hz) RAM,
    500GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce G210M (512MB) (latest drivers)
    Windows 7 Home Premium
I have reinstalled several times and the problem still exists, which leads me to believe it is a hardware issue, most probably something heating up too much perhaps.
The laptop is raised up and plenty of air gets to every surface.
I bought it in February 2010, so the warranty is OK, what will Lenovo likely do regarding: fixing it, can they replace it? Will I have to pay for any hardware fix?
    Thanks for your advice :-)

  • HP Touchpad - Hardware Support Outside of US

I purchased an HP Touchpad thru ebay sometime ago.  I notice recently there is a one or two pixel horizontal line which appears 0.6 of an inch from the top border (it is slightly below the notification bar and runs parrallel to it. This line will show as a vertical line when I rotate the Touchpad and it is quite pronounced in this mode.
    My questions are:
Does HP support the Touchpad outside of the USA.  I live in Malaysia.
Secondly, can this problem be rectified by repair thru warranty or payment. Does the warranty cover this problem?
If I am addressing this to the wrong forum, please direct me to the proper one.
    Much thanks,
    tzabidin.

    This is the correct forum.
I am not sure if HP has a service center in Malaysia or not.  My guess is that HP will only service your TouchPad in certain countries.  Like the US, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, and maybe Austalia.  I don't know that for certain, so you should definitely call HP Support and inquire about how to get your TP serviced.  And yes, I would think a malfunctioning LCD screen would qualify for warranty repair.

  • Connector/Hardware fault with Ipad 3G/32

I am extremely disappointed and would appreciate any help. I have owned my Ipad for just over 2 weeks and have just landed in Thailand. I had thought this would be the ideal travel companion.
Unfortunately it seems I have a lemon. I am unable to get it recognized on any PC, here is what I have tried:
    1. Windows 7 laptop, on all 3 USB ports. Have used the apple cable, as well as an aftermarket griffen cable. In both cases, there is no reaction whatsoever on the PC or Ipad.
    2. Have tried on a colleagues laptop as well (also win7) with the same result.
    3. I purchased the aftermarket apple wall charger and dock. When connected to the wall, the Ipad indicates 'not charging'.
    4. I have reset the ipad as per instructions in other threads. I have even gone so far as to delete all the apps and data (via setting, general, reset).
At the moment it is showing the 'connect to itunes' graphic and i cant get it to connect to anything.
I am really at my wits end. I believe I have read all the threads and kb articles. I have checked device manager to see if its a driver problem.
I can only conclude that my unit is a dud?
As a last resort before returning it I am hoping someone can give me some advise.
One important note is that it seems this behavior started after updating to the 3.2.1 (firmware).
    Can anyone help?

    I would like to add:
    1. I have reinstalled itunes.
    2. This same windows laptop has synced and backed up this ipad before (since I have owned it) without fault or issue.
