T4i Red-Eye Flash Always On

I have a brand new T4i and when you enable red-eye reduction and press the shutter half-way, you get between one and three flashes, in the viewfinder you see the little countdown timer, and then you snap the picture and the flash goes off - no problem.
However, when you disable red-eye reduction, and press the shutter half-way, you still get a random number of flashes (between one and three), as if red-eye reduction was on but the timer in the viewfinder does not activate. It does this in every mode, except for the modes where flash is normally disabled.
Does this sound normal? I don't think I should be getting those flashes at the halfway point.

I found my answer: The T4i is equipped with something called "AF-Assist Beam". Under low light conditions, it will fire a burst of flashes to illuminate the subject and enable easier autofocusing.

• My Photoshop (CS4) Red Eye Correction always makes the eyes a dark blue. ??

What if the person in the photograph has medium brown eyes? How do I get the Red Eye Correction to stop always making the eyes a dark blue? Can't find out how to change the color cast. The software is Photoshop (CS4) for Mac.

It's in the Spot Healing pop-out, but I never use it. There is an option in Camera RAW, but prefer to use a Hue/Saturation layer. Select both pupils with the eliptical marquue tool > Open the H/S layer, and adjust hue, sat, and lightness if required.
or
Open the H/S layer with no selection in place, and use the RGB drop-down and select the Reds. Then adjust hue, sat, lightness. Invert the layer mask, and paint back in with a soft white brush.

• E90: Red light flash is always on

Hi,
I have a Nokia E90 Communicator. recently there is a problem. The red flash light near the camera is always on. I tried switching off the mobile. but the light is still on. I pulled out the battery and when Inserted the battery the fist thing is the red color flash getting on.
Can anyone help me to switch it off. its very frustrating to see it always on.
Thanks,
Amit Garg

You probably need to Reset your phone or if that doesn't make any difference then you should check for a firmware update or re-installation using Nokia Software Updater.
Important: Back up all your important data, contacts, messages, etc., using "Nokia PC suite" on PC. You need to have a USB data cable too compatible to your phone.
I hope this will work for you.

Ahmed.

• Red eye reduction not always working

Hi.
On some pictures, I'm having trouble with the red eye reduction. On a few pictures, it worked just fine.
I'm having the most trouble with cats. The eyes aren't red, but bright yellow and nothing seems to happen when I try to use the tool.
Anyone else seeing this? Or am I doing something wrong?

Hi Lennart - good to see you're asking a question in this forum - you're usually the helper (in iMovie)
I've had the same problem with red eye reduction. It generally only works when eyes are red - yellow eyes don't respond to the correction tool (humans and cats). My workaround is to use the clone stamp in Photoshop Elements. Option click on part of an eye that is the right colour (usually dark) then clone to the eye needing correction. With patience and care, usually the eye can be suitably fixed. Zoom in when performing the correction.
In iPhoto preferences you can set Elements (or any editing program) to open automatically when double clicking a photo in iPhoto.
Hope this helps Lennart.

• Red eye problems

Hi I'm new to this forum and an absolute beginner so please bear with me.
I would like to ask if anybody has a solution to the following problem.
I am working with Adobe Premier Elements 9 on a 2010 iMac running Mac OSX 10.6.8.
I always have a problem with the eyes of my Siamese cats. They have beautiful blue eyes with the usual black iris. Under flash photography they turn completely pink. Not red but pink. I have tried correcting this using the red eye reducter but it really looks terrible. Giving just a black blob on the eye, making it look dead. In one case the black dot even refused to stay on the eye and instead jumped to my wifes red finger nail. She is holding the cat.
Any ideas gratefully received and will be tried.
Thanks in advance.
John.

John,
You are correct in that feline (and canine) eyes show up differently on film (or digital), than do human/primate eyes.
There was a tutorial, or at least a long discussion on the Photoshop forum, from some years ago, on how best to "recreate" the feline eyes, but I cannot find the one that I recall (my memory is just getting too cloudy, sort of like the eyes on my older Bulldog... ). I looked over the tutorials on Dr. Brown's Web site, and did not see what I was looking for, but it might be tucked away, or perhaps in an archive. Dr. Brown does so many great tutorials, and those often change a bit, as Photoshop evolves (new Tools, and new features), that one might have to dig more deeply.
I would also post the question to the Photoshop Forum, and just not mention that you have Photoshop Elements, as some of the younger folk there (with better memories, than mine), will likely furnish you with a link, and tips (that can be easily translated to PSE). If you mention PSE in the post, too many will likely just recommend that you post to that forum, without considering the problem fully. I know that the tutorial/discussion was in the Photoshop Forum, but could not locate it.
Good luck,
Hunt

• Red eye reduction technology failure in N8

hi,guys it has been observed that red eye reduction technology in N8 has no significant results even in high ambient light.

The main cause of red-eye is the location of the flash in relation to the camera lens. In the N8's case it is far too close to the lens so you will get a significant amount of light bounce back to the lens in a more or less direct line, thus producing a red eye effect. The red-eye reduction mode attempts to lessen this effect by activating the flash to constrict the subjects pupils before the picture is taken. However, this doesn't always work as some people will either blink or look away during the pre-flash period.
The N8's camera may be the greatest seen on any mobile phone but it is not perfect.
If you do need to take portrait shots in low light with flash, have your subject/s look slightly away from the camera rather than directly at it.
All the best.

• Red eye removal tool not only for RED eyes

Hello,
I posted this already one or two years ago:
As wildlife photographers we encounter the "red eye problem" in different ways:
Some birds or mammals have a blue reflection or even a green reflection - or other colors.
The redy eye removal tool won't work here. I am sure that there are some other wildlife photographers,
who have the same problem (we use sometimes flash to get rid of shadows in harsh daylight or to
get more brilliant colors in dull light).
Solution: Don't reduce the tool to red eyes, but let us select the color, which should be removed!
Thanks for hearing us!
Christoph
(from Germany - please excuse be english)

Yes, it should be there under the same icon as the Healing brush

• BUG: Red Eye Removal on JPGs + Auto commit to XMP

There seems to be a bug in 1.3.1 when using the Red Eye Removal tool on JPGs and auto commit metadata to file option is selected:
Can anyone confirm?
This is what I've written to Adobe in a bug report:
******BUG******
Concise problem statement:
When using "Red Eye Removal Tool" on jpgs and in File->Catalog Settings->Metadata the option "Automatically write changes into XMP" is selected this will end up in a loop reading and writing metadata. The picture is always in status: "checking metadata". "Metadata Date" of file is changing from time to time because Lightroom is always saving metadata to file (modified date of the jpg file itself also changes, so something is written to file).
Steps to reproduce bug:
1. in File->Catalog Settings->Metadata check option "Automatically write changes into XMP"
2. select a JPG picture and go to Develop Module
3. use the Red Eye Removal Tool
Results:
Endless loop by Lightroom trying to save this change into Metadata of JPG file
Expected results:
Either it is not possible to store this change in metadata: then don't touch the file.
Or it is possible, then this needs to be fixed so it is written/read correctly from file.

The red eye tool works by selecting the whole eye not just the pupil. If it still does not work try lightening or darkening the image to gaiain some more colour. If that does not work you can clone form one of the eyes that has worked.
Hope this helps you out.........

• Red eye correction generating strange grid pattern in viewer

Hi everyone,
For the last week Aperture 3.5.1 has been adding a strange grid with a repeating pattern in my images when I edit them in the viewer. Here is a screenshot:
The strange pattern is near the top right and appears to be of my son's eye. The pattern appears in multiple images and always seems to be one of the eyes of the subject! It occurs when I use the red eye correction.
If I toggle off certain adjustments, not just the red-eye adjustment, the pattern goes away. However, once I turn on certain adjustments the pattern returns or moves to another part of the screen! If I do turn off red eye correction the grid goes away.
So let me summarize here:
If I use red eye correction and I use ANY other adjustments then I will get the strange eye grid.
It appears if I don't use the red eye correction the eye grid does not appear.
I have tried repairing permissions, repairing the library, rebuilding the database, and reinstalling Aperture. I've also tried moving the library to another mac and I can replicate the issue on that mac as well, however, not as often? I also downloaded memtest and ran it on my mac and it said all my ram is fine. I have also tried shortening my library and I can duplicate the issue in a small library with few pictures.
I'd really like to use the red eye correction without the strange grid! When I export the images the grid does not appear.
I am using a Mac Pro mid 2010 with 14 gig of memory. The second machine I tried is a macbook pro laptop using 8 gig. I'm really at a loss here. Please help! Thanks again

Sounds like you have done everything but delete your user preferences. This often resolves UI issues.
Details are on Apple's Aperture trouble-shooting page.
You might also flush your NVRAM.

• Aperture makes eye purple with Red Eye Correction tool. Why? Bug?

http://www.hvmediasolutions.com/images/picture1.png
As you can see with the above picture, Aperture does not do red eye well. iPhoto gets it right, actually as well as Photoshop CS4.
Any suggestions? Or is this a bug?
And yes I could use Photoshop every time, but I am trying to do as much as I can in Aperture.
Thanks,
Ed

I have an old camera, Nikon Cool Pix 3100 and save my photos to .jpg. Yes I know, time to upgrade.
I capture straight into Aperture.
The thing that bugs me, iPhoto 08 gets it right, better than Photoshop. Aperture, since version 1, has always given me purple red eye cast on both Intel and Power PC Mac Book Pro's. Since iPhoto can get it right, Aperture should be able to.
Currently I use Pixelmator and desaturate with the brush tool for the best results.
By the way Lightroom 2 desaturates the eye to a light grey with it's red eye tool.
Different results with 4 different applications. I would love to just use one.

• When i close firefox (normally click red X) i always see an very brief image of a previous screen as well as the one i just closed. This is only since new version downloaded.

As the questions says: when i close the screen using the red X i always see a very brief image of a previous webpage. This has only been since i downloaded the latest version of firefox.
I have no idea if it is harmful to my system. It seems to be constant each time i close firefox.

This can be caused by clearing the cookies via [[Clear Recent History]].
* Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" > [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings
You can try to exclude the cookies to test that.
You can let all cookies expire when you close Firefox to remove unwanted cookies and keep the ones with an allow exception.
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Keep until": "I close Firefox"
If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the cookies when you close Firefox then Firefox also tries to clear the cookies from plugins like Flash and starts a plugin-container process for each plugin and possibly for each cookie (?) and that can add extra time if there are a lot of cookies to remove and also can cause an unresponsive script error to appear.

• Glow eye versus the RED eye

Why isn't anyone talking about the GLOW eye or white eye that the iPhone 4 gives off, it's not a RED EYE, and it happens a lot! So if this new feature is supp to fix the RED EYE will it ALSO fix this GLOW EYE white thingy that shows up when using the flash? It's most annoying and if this new update fixes this on BOTH i repeat on BOTH someone please let me know!

hmm... yeah, I'm not being very specific. Red, white, glow. Guess I'm not sure which is which. I have a pic of my cat who's eyes are shining like green LEDs - I'm guessing this what you mean by glow eye:
Red eye is red eye. No question there.
What I saw from the iphone photo, which I thought you were referring to originally, looked kind of pale and could not be removed properly with the aperture red eye tool but was cleaned up nicely in the iphone with it's own red eye tool.

• N8 Camera RED EYE

hello sir , I m using Nokia N8 phone is good ... and there is no problem but main problem ... comes is in main sector ... 12 MP camera ...... there after afternoon all picture in RED EYE and and when click RED EYE option select eye become more horroble white eye ..........
when i submit phone in nokia care for these problem he says these is Nokia Genuine Problem ... it means Nokia Launch default N8 Mobile .......... without check Xenon flash working .. or not ........... after afternoon my nokia N8 worst camera ...........
so solve these problem in my and other phone too

Thanks for the reply but.... this message is directed at Adobe not you. With a program as advanced and complicated as Photoshop "trial & error" is NOT an option. As a professional I do not have the time to "figure out" the basics of the program, not to mention the depths to which Photoshop is capable.
Once again, I am not directing this message towards you. I am hoping Adobe monitors this list.

• Red Eye Woes

The red eye in iPhoto has does some strange things for me. It always had an issue where sometimes (seemingly randomly) it would apply redeye to an ENTIRE photo (red shirts, lips, face and all). This is obviously a useless feature and it takes a good 30 seconds to apply the effect, then another few seconds to undo it. Then the red eye tool works as advertised (click on the red area).
I still have that issue, but now I am having another problem additionally. I like to zoom in on a photo when I do the red eye reduction so I can see where I'm clicking. When I did this, the image would be blurry for a second then it would go back to the proper resolution a after a half second or so. Now however, when I zoom in the image stays burry. Not because the image is blurry, iPhoto just isn't recalibrating the image. The only thing that seems to solve this usse is if I use the enhance tool. The image goes back in focus.
Needless to say, all these issues make reducing red eye a chore and a several hour long one at that.
Any ideas about what is causing this. The new issue I mention did start after using a new camera (went from a kodak to a panisonic). I wouldn't think that could be the problem but you never know.
I suppose the best solution would be to plunk down the $80 for an upgrade. I wish I could spend $20 just for an iPhoto upgrade.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you find that the red eye blotched out more than just the red in the eye the photo in general may have more red in it than others. One possible way around it is to use the Temperature adjust slider to temporarily make the image cooler in appearance, use the red eye tool and then reset the temperature back to its original setting. That can reduce the overflow of the red eye tool.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
