T500 not starting after unplugging power cable

Hi,
I'm looking after a customer's T500 Thinkpad (Win XP). The machine first didn't start at all. I then figured that by removing both battery and RAM, and pressing the power button repeatedly a couple of times, and then like a minute), I could get it to start up.
The machine was in very bad condition, I had to remove a ridiculous amount of spyware and viruses. I also went to the Productivity Center and updated the system, just everything that was updateable (including BIOS).
The only problem I can't solve is that the computer still refuses to start once switched off AND power cable removed. If I leave it plugged in, it would boot, but once the power cord is plugged off, I have to remove battery and ROM again etc...
The regular battery seems to work fine, I was working like an hour only on battery, and it went down to approx. 70 %, so I know the battery is not dead.
I also updated all drivers and software available for Category "Power Management" from the Lenovo suppor site, but still it would work.
I opened the computer and I found a CMOS battery as shown here:
https://itsuperstore.com.au/images/t40%20cmos.jpg Unfortunately, I don't know how to verify if this battery still has power (chances are it doesn't), and if this would have any impact on the booting process.
Could somebody please help me out?

you can take off the CMOS battery, and try to boot the laptop regulary. Having a depleted CMOS doesn't cause the problem you described. The problem you describe usually is something to do with a faulty charging circuit/power management circuit on the laptop.

    Hello AmlnnN,
I understand have you finished doing a little maintenance   work on the computer it now freezes periodically is that correct? I will do all I can to help you resolve this issue.
First thing lets run a couple test on some of your hardware.
    See steps below:
    1.       I want you to boot into the bios menu this link will show you how.
    2.       Once in bios go over to the diagnostic option at the top.(Note you will need to use the arrow keys to navigate)
    3.       You may see 2 test there if that is the case run both test.
    4.       It may take some time so please have the ac adapter plugged in.
    5.       Once the test finished press F9 to setup defaults and then press F10 to save and exit.
Also find out while you’re in the bios if the computer ever freezes there.
Pleas respond back with your results at your earliest convenience.
    Thank You

  • Bios not starting after switching SATA cables?

Problem description: I'll try to be as specific as possible with this. Yesterday I installed an Intel SSD into my computer to use as a boot disk. I had previously been using a Spinpoint F3, which I retained as a storage/gaming disk. The firmware update software for the SSD was unable to detect the SSD, so I checked intel's website and saw that some MSI boards conflict with the firmware update on certain specific SATA ports. I then did the following, after unplugging the computer and opening the case:
    1. Removed the power cord to the motherboard so I would be able to more easily remove the graphics card.
    2. Removed the graphics card to access the SATA plug-ins
    3. Removed the cables for the F3 and the SSD
    4. Removed the cables in the SATA ports I wanted (these hooked up to my CD/DVD drive and the front panel USB/headphones/ESata drives)
    5. Put the cables for the F3 and SSD in the ports from part 4.
    6. Put the cables for the F3 and SSD in the ports from part 3.
    7. Replaced the graphics card (Making sure that the two connectors at the end were definitely attached to it)
    8. Replaced the power cord to the motherboard
After all of this I closed the case and powered it on. It starts up, but the only thing that happens is the fan turns on, the various LCD lights on the case come on, and the lights on the motherboard come on. Nothing comes on the screen, although it appears that the monitor can detect that it is at least plugged into the DVI plug on the graphics card. At this point I had not actually updated the firmware for the SSD.
Attempted fixes: Putting the SATA cables back in the prior positions. Unplugging and resetting every cable I can think of.  Took apart the computer and put it back together more or less.  Switched around the RAM
Recent changes: Other than moving the SATA connectors around, I added a new keyboard (can't see how this would affect it) and the SSD drive. As mentioned above, I never got around to updating the firmware on the SSD.
    Operating system: Windows 7 64-bit
    System specs:
Lite-on DVD RW - Sata cable
    Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB G2 SSD
    CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3
    Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor
    SeaSonic SS-500ES Bronze 500W ATX12V v2.31 80 PLUS BRONZE
MSI P55-CD53 LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
    Radeon 4890
    CoolerMaster 690 case
Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

Try to clear CMOS and boot again to see.

My UPAD lite does not start after recent update. I have lots of info in it. Can anybody help me to get it back? Can I somehow undo the update? Thanks

    "UPAD lite?"
I expect that you mean some version of iPad.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

Hi, My iOS device (Ipad mini) only appears in iTunes while cable-connected, but does not appear after diconnect the cable. How can I Wifi sync ?
    Documents say

But I can't see my iPad Mini in iTunes.
And my  Ipad  (Settings, General, iTunes Wifi Sinc)  shows  a message :" Sync will resume when xxx(my PC with iTunes) is available "...

I have done exactly as you say, but it does not work for me.
You indicated  " Navigate to the info tab and scroll down. There'll be a check box for 'sync over wifi' or something to that effect. Check that box and sync to affirm your choice."
I navigated to Summary tab (not Info Tab) and checked "Sync with this ipad over Wi-Fi"

My MacBook Pro, does not start after pushing start button. The side bar starts and stops at half way.

    Hy myneck,
Happy Holidays!  The resource below may provide some steps to try if your MacBook Pro won't start.
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1367
This article discusses what to do if your Mac won't turn on. To differentiate this from a display issue, be sure that when you press the power button:
You don't hear a startup chime.
You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
There is no video on your built-in or external display
If your computer has power but doesn't display any video, it may have one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
You may hear a startup chime.
You may hear fan or drive noise.
You may see a light from the Sleep LED (if your Mac has one).
Pressing the Caps Lock key on the keyboard causes it to light.
If any of these display-related conditions occur, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead. Otherwise, continue with this article.
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

  • Canon 60D does not resume after auto power off

My Canon 60D does not resume after auto power off. It shows the empty battery icon when I press the shutter button, even the battey is fully charged. If I remove the battery and insert back it will resume to work. Any one had the same experience and know how to resolve it?

The power switch is actually a "software" switch.  It's not like a light switch in that it doesn't actually provide or deprive the camera of power... only removing the battery will deprive the camera of power.  This is why it doesn't actually just go dark when you switch off power... instead you'll usually see it perform a sensor clean cycle and then power down.  The camera is technically in a kind of "sleep" mode monitoring the switch.  If a Canon camera ever seems to lock up and ignore all input, the battery should be temporarily removed to "reboot" the camera.   There is no "setting" in a camera that can configure it to ignore buttons.   Although... if the camera is in an automatic mode, some input is deliberately ignored to make it easier to use the camera.  Put the mode dial in a "creative zone" mode (P, Tv, Av, or M) and all buttons and menus should be accessible. You might try connecting the camera via USB cable to your computer and then attempt to control the camera via the Canon EOS Utility to see if that works.  If the camera responds fine to the computer control, then likely the camera's main board and circuits are working fine and it may just be a wiring problem -- as if some cable simply isn't getting a very solid connection.  If this is a wiring issue, you are probably better off sending it in for service.

  • Windows could not start after SP-3 update

Windows could not start after SP-3 update
After I updated Apple Software Update to 2.1 and then updated to BC 2.1 successfully I D/L & Installed SP-3. Even got the Wizard & seemed to go OK. Got prompt “Installation Complete, Need to restart.” I did. I got a black screen with text:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\Windows\inf\biosinfo.inf
You can attempt to repair the file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select ‘r’ at the 1st screen to repair.
I used the power button to shut down Windows & then booted into Mac OS X normally.
I think I need to restart my Mac into Windows (using the Option key ) WHILE THE WINDOWS XP installation CD is in the optical Drive. Then maybe I’ll get a choice to select ‘r’ to repair at the 1st screen?
Has anyone done this with a similar error & successfully repaired their Windows installation? I don’t know if this is a Boot Camp problem or not. XP SP 2 had been working just fine.
    Thanks for any help.

Solved! It apparently was NOT a Boot Camp Issue. The fix was to obtain the file “biosinfo.inf” and from the Mac side, go into my WIndows XP HDD & add that file to: Windows/INF folder. (Yes, it was missing). Why my XP SP2 installation worked fine w/o this file is beyond my knowledge. Perhaps this file is needed only when doing a type of major update yet not needed for simply starting & running Windows? There are web pages stating that upgrading to SP 3 can cause this problem if using 3rd party software such as Norton Anti-Virus (I don’t have that but DO have Zone Alarm). There are also various complicated, long fixes out there. For me, replacing that file did the trick & everything seems fine now. (As far as where one “obtains” that file--long story)

  • Firefox will not start after I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04.

I was using Firefox without issue on Ubuntu 8.04. I then upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Firefox would not start after upgrade. Message said it was already running!
I checked the System Monitor and saw it was "sleeping". I ended process. Firefox then would start, however..... I always have to go into System Monitor before I start Firefox to stop it from running (sleeping) even if I already just quit the program or after a fresh reboot.
I do not use a firewall or virus program.
My router has some sort of firewall hardware, and it is the same router I used with 8.04 with no problem.
What is going on? Why is the program sleeping when I try to start it. Why do I always get the message that it is already running (and I have to shut it down) before I can start it.
It is either a Ubuntu problem or a Firefox problem.
    Sonny.

The workaround for the crash is linked [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=563484 HERE], under "Attachments" in the bug report. • Firefox will not start, after reboot.

For a few months now Firefox will not start after I reboot my computer. In order to get it to start I click the exe then must go into task manager kill it, click the exe again, kill it again then, from there it will typically start, but sometimes it may take one or two more trys. When clicking the exe firefox will appear in the task manager under processes but will will start with ~7% CPU usage, then quickly drop to zero every time until it does actually open and start. I have ran a full system recovery and started anew after reinstalling mozilla several times failed to fix the problem. I run virus and spyware checks often and come up clean, and also run Chrome as a default browser.

    Hello Tom.
You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • ITunes 10.1.2 not starting after update

iTunes will not start after being updated to 10.1.2. Also experienced internet explorer being extremely slow. Tried to repair the installation, but same result. Uninstalled iTunes, restarted the computer, and internet explorer started working again. Reinstalled iTunes from Apple web page. Same result as after update. Everything worked fine before update, no errors during installation.

I have just had exactly yhe same problem.
    Try this!
Go to the itunes support page and uninstall / reinstall Itunes + quicktime exactly to the troubleshooting instructions.
It takes some time and patience but it works on my Vista operating system. Windows 7 should also work as the instructions refer to both systems.

  • Windows 8.1 desktop PC not starting after hibernation

    Hi,
I have a PC that is not starting after hibernation. There are different errors appearing after my tries to repair the boot. I have tried to find a document online describing the boot process but I can't find any. I know how it worked in the old days with boot.ini
and such but this new one is hard to figure out without a desciption.
First I tried to use the automatic repair process but that didn't work. I have also tried bootrec, bootedit, and bcdboot.
I then bought the Easy Recovery Essentials from NeoSmart Technologies but that didn't help to fix the issue, PC still boots to error 1. below. I tried the following process that they suggested:
I have followed the instructions on this link http://j.mp/BcdRepair that they suggested but it didn't help. Instead of the two errors I have come across (PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED and error code 0xc000000f on file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD via F8, both with
white text on blue background), I got to a black page with grayish text telling me the following:
    Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc [...]
    2. Choose your language [...]
    3. Click "Repair your computer."
    File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
It looks like one boot entry gets added to the boot menu every time the PC runs the automatic repair process. In the boot menu I now have more than ten occurrences of Windows Boot Manager.
    Errors:
    1. Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart [...] you can search online later for this error: PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED
    2. Manual boot to one of the Windows Boot Manager entries that appears via F8 gives me the error code 0xc000000f on file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD.
I even tried to copy the BCD from an exactly identical PC but then the path to the BCD disappeared and I'm not sure what drive letter to enter in bcdedit because C: is not C: but X: when booted into Advanced resque mode.
I could just reinstall Windows 8.1 but it feels frustrating, all the files are there. I just need to fix the boot.
Sorry if this post is a bit of messed up, that's about how I feel right now... :)
Does anyone have any suggestions and/or can point me in the direction of a nice document describing how the boot process works, where the BCD is located (I have several on the PC) I would be very happy.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,
According to your description, in my opinion, it seems like not bcd file problem. It's PC itself problem, maybe a hardware problem, also can be system componments corrupt.
Can this PC startup successfully if you choose reboot or shutdown PC? Or this problem just occures after resume system from hibernate?
For Windows boot process knowledge, you can refer to the contents of the link below for more details:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/11341.the-windows-7-boot-process-sbsl.aspx
For your problem, in my opinion, it would be better to use System installation to fix this system file for test.
