T500 - SSD Corsair Force 3, unreliable Windows 7 start

I put SSD Corsais Force 3 240GB in my T500. My installation is simple - clean W7 and few basics + one audio programme, nothing more. While working smooth and fast overall, there is a consistent problem with Windows start (or restart). Every 2nd, 3rd or 4th time, there is a problem:
1) stuck at Thinkpad initial screen
2) stuck after that with white line blinking in the left corner
3) stuck with black screen after that
4) stuck with "starting windows" message
5) blue death (happened already thrice)
In all the cases I make force switch off and after that Windows start smoothly and quickly, as if nothing happened before. So starting a system is quite a lottery for me, it may or may not start.
Could SSD cause this strange behaviour in principle ?
Or it can be some hardware/software problem ? As I said - my installation is new, clean, with very few things, I plan to use it only for audio work ...nothing else

I don't really have a solution for this problem since i experienced a lot of issues with SSD's that use a Sandforce controller in a Thinkpad. Also when searching for help there seems like a lot of people had similar issues with SSD's on other systems (not only Lenovo) that use a Sandforce Controller like OCZ Vertex 3, Corsair Force 3 and so on. So based on my own experience i will never buy a SSD with a Sandforce controller again and never managed to solve some of the issues we experienced. So my recommendation is to buy a SSD with either the Marvell controller (like the Corsair Performance Pro or Plextor M3p), Indilinx (like the OCZ Vertex 4) or Samsung 830 that use a Samsung controller. The company i work for got almost 300 Thinkpads and we tested a lot of SSD's. We found most of them to work fine and these four without any issues at all. For SSD's with Sandforce controllers we had so many problems i cannot imagine why all of the reviews don't focus more on the lack of stabililty instead of the performance for the SF SSD's.
I guess this is not the answer you were hoping for and not much help, but if you find a solution please let us know since there seems like many others never managed to solve the problems including myself. I believe this is a Corsair firmware problem and not a Thinkpad problem so you could try to ask for help in the Corsair forum or contact Corsair support for help. They might be better suited to solve this problem even if it seems like the SF controller instability is a never ending story.

    Hello!
Where can I get description of lenovo software running on start up?
Can you help me to understand what I need to disable on start up?
I update my system to windows 8.
After the latest upgrade with lenovo solution center my systems became additional start-up software:
    1) Lenovo AVFramework Native Server (19) - I don't have web cam,  why it is running?
    2) Mobile Hotspot Client Application - what is it? Why I need it?
    3) ThinkVantage Active Protection System (TpShocks)  - what is it? Why I need it?
    Other qquestion:
    1) Why there is no lenovo power manager, but latest system upgrade (12.01.12) was installing it...?
    2) There are 2 copies of lenovo utilities in Program files and Program files x86! How can I delete one of it properly and what I should delete? (Why this happened - nobody wants to use 32bit software on 64bit system?),
For example there are 2 different copies of password_manager running...
Booting time is 1.20 minute vs 30 sec on [windows 7 without any upgrades]! I make upgrades only with lenovo solution center and I feel myself as a beta tester now...
And the last question, how can I disable life image and color calibration, it is annoying?
PS excuse me for some imperative in my English - this is not my first language.

    Hi,
Did you try running diagnostics? The ESC key after power on should get you to the Startup screen.
If diagnostics run clean then try Safe Mode.
Using F11 to enter the HP Recovery Manager(if working)  should get you to a menu that allows you to select Troubleshoot.

  • Corsair Force GT issue on MacBook Pro Mid-2010 (Sata 2)

I just bought the Corsair Force GT 120 GB to use as the only hard drive in a MacBook Pro Mid-2010. I knew that my MacBook Pro model only supports SATA I & SATA II & that the SSD is backwards compatible. I expected (and still expect) the SSD to link up at SATA II 3 Gb speed.
However, System Profiler in Mac OS X Lion gives the following information:
    NVidia MCP89 AHCI:
    Vendor: NVidia
    Product: MCP89 AHCI
    Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
    Negotiated Link Speed: 1.5 Gigabit
    Description: AHCI Version 1.30 Supported
    Corsair Force GT:
    Capacity: 120,03 GB (120.034.123.776 bytes)
    Model: Corsair Force GT
    Revision: 1.3.3
Benchmark tests show my write & read speeds are at about 100 & 110-130 MB/s. I have searched for a while on this and other forums and not been able to find a way to get negotiated link speed at 3 Gb and then to check whether this solves the rather sluggish performance.
Some extra info that might be useful:
-I have installed all available updates.
-The SSD is the only drive in my system. After booting to the Mac OS X Lion DVD I had created, I used the disk tool to partition the new drive with the settings at GUID partition table & HFS+ Journaled. I haven't experienced any other problems.
-I have reset the SMC, PRAM & NVRAM. This didn't change anything.
-I haven't installed any Windows version using Boot Camp (yet).
-System has Boot ROM Version: MBP71.0039.B0B and SMC Version (system): 1.62f6

  • Corsair Force 3 180GB SS in MacBook Pro 8,2 very slow!!

    Dear Apple,
Last week I bought the Corsair Force 3 180GB SSD for my MacBook Pro I purchased just a few weeks ago. It is the basic 15" configuration with the only things changed are the screen, which is high-res glare and changed the keyboard layout from Dutch (I live in The Netherlands) to English International.
The SSD I bought for my MBP began showing failure, as soon as I installed Lion on it and it were to load the desktop and dock icons, it took a long time to do so. It was slower than the traditional HDD, it even showed the colored lolly mouse sign to show me it is being very busy. I thought it'd be once in a installation and that it needed time to get accustomed. Well... every half hour or so it began to hang and showed the same exact lolly mouse icon busy thing whereas I couldn't do a thing.
Luckily I had already bought a Force 3 180GB SSD before for my Asus laptop. I took it out the Asus laptop and swapped the new SSD (that seemingly is broken) with the 'old' SSD from the Asus laptop and began installing OS X Lion on it. First I erased the partitions with the Disk Utility from the Lion recovery disk and then I began installing Lion on it.
It seemed much better and it didn't hang anymore, so I was happy.
Then I began checking for the rated speed with 'Blackmagic Disk Speed Test' and XBench.
    ( http://imgur.com/nbEic and http://imgur.com/vyuIn for proof )
The speed is very poor!! It is even very close to a tradional hard disk drive..
The weird thing is that the SSD I also used in the asus laptop with Windows 7 x64 (specs are i7 2630QM 2.0ghz, 8GB DDR3 1333mhz RAM, nvidia GT540M/Intel HD3000 and the Force 3 180GB) it did reach 550/520MB as read and write.
Why won't it get those speeds in OS X Lion? I am very sure the MBP 8,2 has SATA3 for the hard drive SATA connector, and it is connected on that SATA connector.
The firmware of the drive had been updated to 1.3.3 but didn't improve my speeds on OS X Lion. So.. how are we gonna solve this?
I am going to return the faulty 'new' SSD back to the store I bought it and going for a RMA, but the SSD I am using now seems to be working well, but it isn't reaching its speeds, which is very weird because it did so in a Windows 7 x64 Laptop.
    Best regards,
    Rick van Dijk

I have the same problem but mine Corsair Force 3 SSD is upgraded in mid 2011 iMac.
    Here is my issue.
Here is my way what I've been through:
    • Apple authorized service: Before I went to service I wanted to test my SSD. It has an amaizing 550MB/s speed on PC (SATA3 port). After I get back my SSD upgraded iMac, I ran some dick benchmark on win7 bootcamp and OSX Lion 10.7.3. Both came back with dissapointing 180-230MB/s speed result. I have the latest EFI 1.9 firmware, and SSD 1.3.3. firmware. I called the service and asked for help. They have no idea what is wrong or what to do...
    • Apple express lane: After a 1 hour phone call I got an advice to take back to service where my SSD was built in even if they do not know what to do with it...
    • Corsair support: They said: "if speed was good on PC it should be good on mid 2011 iMac, because my firmware is supporting the 6GB/s link speed. Also remmended to go back to service..
I read that PRAM could solve problem, but it did not work for me. I will completely erase my drive and reinstall the osx without mirroring it or something like that. If this will solve my problem I will let you know. If not: SERVICE! I'M COMING!

  • Corsair Force 3 240GB and TRIM.

I have a 240GB Corsair Force 3 SSD installed in my macbook pro. Can some one tell me out of experience if I should have TRIM enabled or not. TRIM support in System profiler is set to No. I have read elsewhere that TRIM doesnot need to be enabled as the drive takes care of it. In other places i have read the contrary that it must be enable in the OS.
Can someone shed any light on this.

Read here to learn about TRIM and what it does. Most SSDs have some sort of garbage collection, but that's not quite the same thing as TRIM. I use TRIM Enabler on my 512GB Crucial m4 SSD and it works quite well. You can also enable TRIM through Terminal. Note that whenever there is a system update, you will need to re-enable TRIM again.

  • How do I stop Firefox from thinking it crashed and doing a recovery when forced to use Windows Task manager to close a bad URL that I never want to go back to?

Long question, I know :~) There are web sites that I may visit that will not allow me to exit the site, so I use Alt-Ctrl-Del in Windows to start the Task Manager and force the site to close by ending the program. The new version of Firefox (31.0) thinks that Firefox crashed and send me right back to the source of my problem.
Your documentation for this process is as follows:
    After a crash
Due to unexpected issues such as problems with a website, software errors, or an accidental loss of power, Firefox may unexpectedly close. In these situations, Firefox can restore the pages that you were visiting when it is restarted. Firefox will automatically restore your previous session, the first time you launch it after a crash.
If Firefox crashes a second time, the Restore Session (i.e. "Well, this is embarrassing") page will appear when you next launch Firefox.
...and this is what I found trying to stop this process. Next, when I am forced to use Task Manager to close Firefox a second time to stop a badware site, then the 'Well this is embarrassing' dialog appears and I am finally safely away from the URL.
I do not want Firefox automatically sending me back to a problem site.
Thank you for any procedure you can suggest to stop Firefox from restoring problem web pages, Art Clapton

I am unwilling to attempt navigation away from these sites. The pop-ups that occur on the attempt to leave a site or to close the browser are exit traps offering incentive to stay.
Once upon a time, when the internet was less dangerous, I would be willing to close the exit pop-ups. Now, after twice being infected with malware trying to close the pop-ups, I now force close whichever browser I am using.
Recently, I clicked on the red X to close one pop-up, and it installed a trojan that I had to pay to be removed. When I clicked on 'Leave' in another exit pop, it didn't exit and it turned out I was giving permission to run a script file. Now that criminals have learned these exit pop-ups can be used to force a click action, the sites using them have become dangerous.
If I force the browser to close using Task manager, Please tell me how to stop FireFox from sending me directly back to the same site because it mistakenly believes it crashed when it did not. I forced it to close because I was on a site that had taken control of my browser and was not allowing me to leave the site.
No other browser sends me back to the potentially dangerous sites. I prefer Firefox, but the new version must have a setting that allows me to get safely away from a problem site?

I running an application that is not displaying in the Force Quit Applications window.
When Adobe Lightroom 3 is running it is not listed.
I have quit the application and relaunched it and it still is not appearing in the list of Applications that are running.
What may have happened? How can I remedy this issue?
    Thank you.

Why do you need to invoke the force quit? Are you experiencing hangups, freezes, or ?
When you have the Help section pop up window of an application open, the app itself stays "hidden" until you close the help window - you have to get used to closing that first.

Probably one of your Develop presets is corrupt. To test this hypothesis, press the indicated button:

  • T500 SSD Whirring Noise When Booting Up

I have only had this T500 since July 2009 and last week it started making a whirring noise when I turn it on.  Before last week it was so quiet and it booted up very fast.  Now it's making this noise and slower.  I thought solid state hard drives were supposed to be quiet.  Any suggestions?

They have no moving parts. Are you sure it wasn't the cooling fan?

  • Booklet: clean install Windows 7 Starter on Kingst...

I bought a Kingston SSDNow V+180 SVP180S2/64G 64GB to replace the original HDD.
I had a lot of trouble cloning the drive (or actual the restore operation). Both restoring the Windows partition and the System partition failed.
I decide to start from scratch and just execute a clean install of Windows 7 Starter.
The advantage of this way is you only need a 4 Gb USB  Flash Drive and no other hardware (besides the new 1.8 SSD...) This guide is also very useful when the original HDD is broken (and no system restore is available).
Ingredients (where to obtain is explained below):
    - 1.8" SSD
    - USB Flash Drive (minimum) 4Gb
    - Windows 7 key of Booklet
    - Windows 7 ISO file (x86 version)
    - Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool
    - Nokia Booklet Drivers
The Windows 7 key of the booklet can be found behind the battery. Just remove the battery pack and there is the original Microsoft Windows 7 product key.
As the Nokia Booklet doesn't have a DVD-ROM and it's not supplied with the Windows 7 DVD, you can download the Windows 7 ISO file from here (make sure it’s the x86 version):
    http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65804/X15-65804.iso
I got this information from here:  http://mrintech.com/download-iso-file-create-dvd-activate-windows-7-x86-and-x64-with-genuine-product...
I also executed the "Remove Edition Configuration (EI.cfg) File from Windows 7 ISO", but wait until proceeding; I will come back to that...
Also download the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool from here:
http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe (When the link is broken, just use Google).
Please note: nothing illegal is going on downloading this software!
Install and execute the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool.
When asked, select the ISO as source and the USB Flash Drive as target.
The tool formats the USB Flash Drive and the files are copied to it as well.
(I executed this on a Windows 7 machine, but I don't expect differences when executed on a XP machine).
When the tool is ready do the following.
Search on the USB Flash Drive for the file "ei.cfg"
I used the tool to remove this file from the ISO, but it was back on the Flash Drive .
You will have to remove it otherwise Windows 7 Home is installed (result: you can't use the original Booklet key).
How to replace the HDD for the SSD can be found over here:
    http://pc-level.com/2011/07/how-to-disassemble-nokia-booklet-3g/
Plug the USB Flash Drive into the Nokia Booklet and power the Booklet up.
Hit the F12 button and select the USB Flash Drive to boot from.
When asked, select Windows 7 Starter to install.
The installation takes a while, but in the end you will see the Windows 7 desktop and are almost ready.
It's very important to disable TRIM and you will see a an excellent performance increase when you execute the following:
Open the command prompt (for example):
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
    type:
    fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1
To check whether TRIM is disabled execute:
    fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify
    The result should be: 1
Reboot the booklet, just to be sure.
Install the drivers from Nokia: http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/booklet-3g/software
    Execute a Windows Update.
The Windows Experience Index shows me 5.9 with the SSD.

Don't worry Reserter, your English is ok
Concerning your problem two things come to mind:
    - did you disable TRIM? It's very important to disable this option because the chipset can't handle TRIM. After I disabled TRIM a serious improvement was noticeable.
    - the reason of the clean install initially was because I wanted a SSD (solid state drive) instead of a HDD (hard disk drive). The factory installed HDD is slow and a SSD drive improves performance of the Nokia Booklet dramatically.
I would consider to buy a 1.8" SSD... The booklet starts up in an acceptable time and is really useful as a netbook now. (buy an enclosure for the original HDD and you have external storage as well).

I think I have discovered the answer to my own question!
I have disabled Adobe Reader plug-in, and can now see PDFs in Chrome.
(Steps: Chrome Menu, Settings option, Click Advanced Settings link, then Content Settings button, then select Disable Individual Plug-Ins, and a list of plug-ins is offered to enable or disable).
I then get a different result depending on whether or not Chrome PDF viewer is enabled - with it enabled I see the PDF document in Chrome, or with it disabled then the option is offered to download it, but either way I can get it it via Chrome without having to run Internet explorer in another browser window.

  • NB550D - Upgrade from Windows 7 Starter to Professional

    Dear All,
I recently bought a Toshiba NB550D and need to upgrade the pre-installed Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Pro. I tried the (preinstalled) Anytime Upgrade Wizard but this does not work. I get stuck in the wizard because - as he tells me - "You might need to change locale or language settings to purchase Windows Anytime Upgrade online". I learned that in order to use Anytime Upgrade the locale settings must be identical to those of the country where your billing address is located. For me this country is Switzerland, so everything needs to be in German.
The problem is, the Windows 7 Starter installation always uses English as "Display Language" and this cannot be modifed after installation. I tried rolling back the installation but there is no choice possible, it is always English. All other locale and language settings can be modified.
    My questions:
    - Is there a way to force the display language of Windows 7 Starter to German (either before or after initial installation)?
    - Is there a way to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro circumventing the problem, e.g. by using a different approach than the anytime upgrade wizard?
    - Any other suggestions which might help?
    Thank you
    gg

    Hi buddy,
This is depending on the preinstalled Windows 7 Starter. If Windows 7 Starter was preinstalled in English language just an upgrade to an English version of Windows 7 Professional is possible. So you cant upgrade from English to German for example, therefore you have to buy a new Windows 7 version.
So either you buy a new Windows 7 Professional version in German or you upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. The Ultimate version provides MUI (Multilingual User Interface).

  • Windows Classis Theme - Windows Classic Start Menu / Save Files Dialog

MS, please keep a way back to the 9x interface!
Really anoying that the Windows Classis Start menu (Windows 9x etc.) is not available in Win7.
(and apparently no option "Always Show All Programs" option is available and the subprograms are listed in the same window which makes it a long list)
People and commpanies want the option to go to the old-familiair Windows Classic (9x) interface!!!!
We know it, it works and it suits the purpose: why change!
Furthermore in a company environment all files are saved in a directory structure and not in the 'favorites' folders in the user profile. So please...make a simple classic w7 interface like XP (with a simple Save File Dialog) and not a Christmass Three with bells Interface like W7.
[i think that's one of the reson that ofiice 2007/vista doesn't sell as it should. I'm affraid it is a marketing strategy of MS. But unfortunately I think it drives more people in to alternatives like openoffice etc.]

The XP and later interface has always looked like something designed by Fisher-Price to me. Much more annoying, though, is the inability to go the Classic Start Menu. This is sufficient to cause me to stick with XP until it simply can't handle the then-current software. By that time, Linux should be able to run all Windows progams; it is getting closer to that now. Are you listening, MSFT? I'm an MCP with other certs, and, unless you give the option for the Classic Start Menu and a menu that shows all programs (not just a "personalized menu), XP may be my final Windows version.
I really do not understand Microsoft's lack of logic here. They changed the interface in Office 2007 with the ribbon; millions upon millions of users were proficient with the interface prior to that, and MSFT says they have to learn a new one (I agree with Frank1977 here that it's driving people to OpenOffice). That sounds like a New Coke decision to me. Maybe they have an Apple or Linux mole in there, seeking to give bad advice purposely (for any Biblically literate readers, think "Hushai the Archite", and the advice he gave Absalom).
I have defended Microsoft to many Microsoft-bashers at work, but this is becoming more and more difficult to do. And I'm losing my incentive to do so. PLEASE, Microsoft, add power and abilities, as you are doing, but don't arrogantly insist on forcing professional users to learn a new (and less capable) interface.
Well said , Tewald , have considered other options lately as far as "other operating systems go" , you listening Micro soft ?
