T500 - Strange Problem With Display
Hi,
I've received my T500 after a HDD replacement, and a fresh Win XP. A really strange thing happens sometimes (not every time), either when I plug in the AC, or when I try to shut down the display through fn+f3, the display starts jumping horizontally, either the whole image, or parts of the screen, jump to the right and then back. What seems to stop it, is if I change the resolution momentarily.
Any ideas if this is a hardware problem, or a driver problem, and how I might be able to fix it?
Thanks a lot in advance.
does this machine have switchable graphics card?

Jin Li

Strange Problems With Display and Permissions Since 10.5.1 update.
Since I've done the 10.5.1 update I have been having a strange problem with my desktop and dock displays. On my desktop I have these strange lines that appear any time I log in or open any application, the lines never go away and change locations on the screen once I open an application or move a window. My dock has the reflective shelf for about half of it, the rest is a dull grey. I've also had problems with verifying and repairing my permissions. I can never actually complete either permissions task. I've used some third party apps, they always fail as well. The only time I can actually repair my permissions is by booting in to single user mode and doing a fsck -f command. When I boot back in to Leopard and try to use the Disk Utility to repair, it continues to fail.
I'm not sure if the video problem I am having stems from a permissions issue or possibly a corrupt video driver. Either way, I've done a lot research and haven't found anyone with the same problems I have been having so I thought I would give these forums a shot.
I am using a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver with dual 800Mhz, 1.5gb RAM, and a GeForce4 Ti 4600 128mb video card.
Here is a screen shot of the line and dock problem.
Here is a screen shot of my "About This Mac.
If anyone could lend some light on this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Hello,
I have a 1 year old intel imac 24" 2.4 ghz (brushed metal) running the newest OS 10.5.5 3 ghz ram. up until 2 weeks ago this machine ran perfect with not one kernal panic. In september I was away fr 1 month, during this time the computer was off. i came back from vacation and booted up and a number of new updates were available for the os, security, java, quicktime, itunes etc. what seemed to be a few days after installing these updates i got a strange pattern on the screen. here are links to what it looks like:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/computerproblems/2971381655/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/computerproblems/2971381649/
please note teh desktop image is the colored bubbles.
when moving any finder window or folder around i could basically erase the strange pattern by wiping over it. in the course of about 2 weeks this strange pattern (looks a bit different each time) has occurred about 5-6 times. It has occurred during normal use, right after start up, and upon shutting down -in other words at all times. A few minute after the 3rd time it happened the computer had a kernal panic and i had to force restart. that was a few days ago, then today i had another kernal panic and force restart. I have saved the logs of both kernal panics if anyone wants to see them. i must stress i have not installed any new hardware, or connected any new devices to the computer since this problem started, apart from all the apple updates.
I have repaired permissions before and after, it still happens. my computer is totally up to date. I have booted off the installer disc and run disk utilities and it says the volume appears to be fine.
I have the 3 year apple care warranty, am i entitled to any hardware testing discs? I didn't get any with the computer. FInally, this may be the most important question of all, I am using time machine with an external firewire HD and it is backed up until an our ago. If anything serious goes wrong with my computer will i be able to restore a repaired or new computer to the exact state it's in now with TM? I can't afford to lose any work.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards
Paulfigured i'd post the kernel panic logs. i've had two in the course of a few days, here's the first one:

Super-strange problem with display - EFI BIOS missing or corrupted?
OK, so here's the breakdown.
When I insert Windows CD/DVD - screen lights up, installation goes, no problems.
When I insert OS X Install CD - no picture, no go. It "installs in the background without providing any picture to my LCD screen". Zapping, resetting, taking out battery, nothing works. I have three Mac Edition VGA's, all exhibit the same problems so this is absolutely not a VGA problem.
For example, out of pure misery, I tried installing iAtkos v7. It works. Of course, this has a classic DOS/ISO compatible booting procedure that doesn't require Mac CD/DVD format.
Please help, run out of ideas.OK, so, wrong group but... don't kill me
We're talking about a early-2008 Mac Pro, two quad-core Xeons at 3.0, 16GB memory, three different VGA's tried (they're not inside at the same time - I bought two more so I can test and check if it's VGA that's the problem, so, only one inside at the time) - 7300GT, and two GT120's. No other hardware inside, nothing connected, no network connection at this time.
All three VGA's work happily when I put the Win 7 install DVD (Ultimate 64-bit, but I tried with Vista and XP as well and it boots and everything is ok), but as soon as I put Snow Leopard Retail DVD inside (or the original DVD that came with it) - the screen remains blank while computer powers up and never reaches the "gray screen" status. None of the keyboard combinations (Option key, D key, C key, X key - while starting up the computer) - managed to do a thing about it.
It just seems to me that my previous OS X installation that used to work (the one that was up there when I bought it brand new) - installed some firmware update that screwed up something on the motherboard. That's why I'm saying that it seems as though EFI BIOS on the motherboard is corrupted or something.
Is there some way to re-flash the bios of this motherboard via bootable cd and/or from Windows? I tried that firmware restore CD, but as it never reaches the grey screen, I can't tell what's going on so - no help on that part.
Any help would be hugely welcome. -
Strange problem with color measure in Mac.
Hello, I am having a strange problem with color measure in Mac. For example i create a gradient in Photoshop from color 200 200 200 to color 240 240 240. When i measure the color of the gradient with the color measure tool of Photoshop or with the built in OS X color measure tool the measured color is from 200 199 197 to 240 240 238. I have measured the same gradient with Photoshop for PC and the values are OK (the same values that i create).
I dont know what is the problem, but i belive that the colors that i create would be the same that i measure after creating them, and also the same values between Mac and PC. I will appreciate it a lot any help or information that you could give me that helps me to understand what is happening here.
Thank you for your time
Marcelo.Yep you got it, proof as monitor basicaly strips out any profiling and just delivers it straight.
is there any way to make the OS X color measure tool to measure the original color values
You mean the document colors - No, like I said photoshop is filtering your image through document profile, proof setup and monitor profile. Why do you want to use Digital color meter anyway for this?
i dont understand what is the point to measure color values that will change every time a calibrate my monitor.
Because color values are 'bigger' than whats on your monitor. Your monitor (via photoshop) is only doing the best it can to display those values - which can be anything from LAB colors outside the gamut of your monitor - to CMYK colors. Calibrating it is the only way to allow your monitor to do this in any way accurately. (not ever really possible) Monitors have a certain gamut and are only dispays/representations of the REAL colors that a document, with a profile, holds. So there's only one good reason to measure monitor values, and that's to generate a monitor profile. -
Strange problem with JOptionPane.showInputDialog
I have a strange problem with JOptionPane.showInputDialog in that when I run a program anything that is typed in is displayed backwards, for example: I type this character > and this < is what is displayed.
I've uninstalled the sdk and reinstalled it twice but that hasn't solved my problem and the java plug-in in the control panel is displaying the same symptoms.
I did a search before posting this but all I got really was posts from people who wanted to reverse their text.
Thanks for your help on this.Is it just the < and > characters?

Strange problem with Dreamweaver Pop-Up menus
Hello:
I have encountered a very strange problem with DreamWeaver
pop-up menus, and I was wondering if I could get some help from
this forum, as I can't seem to find an answer anywhere else.
The problem involves use of DreamWeaver's pop-up menu
behavior — all works as expected, and my local preview of the
Web page/site works fine, but when I upload the site to a server, I
see extra question mark and "box" characters added to my drop-down
menus. This problem is inconsistent between browsers: Sometimes I
see it only on IE, sometimes I also see it on Firefox.
For example, check out the following URLs:
http://libertycreativesolutions.net/clients/cci/
... this implementation of drop-down menus ("Services"
button, etc.) displays an extra "box" character for each of the
drop-down menu items, but this only occurs in IE -- Firefox is
fine.
http://libertycreativesolutions.net/clients/microtek/HTML/MicroTek_home.html
... this implementation of drop-down menus shows an extra
question mark above the triggering link onMouseOver for Firefox,
and in IE, it shows this "box" character for both the triggering
buttons and for each menu item.
For both of these sites, the pop-up menus work without a
problem *when I'm looking at a local version on my workstation*.
What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is going on here????
Any help for this problem is appreciated.
Note that I stripped out the JavaScript code for menu
information from the <head></head> area of each of
these pages and placed it in a linked JavaScript document.

Strange Problem With Extra Spaces
Hello,
My development staff is experiencing a very strange problem with our JSP pages which display the values from a JDBC result set. We have two environments here: development and production. We have been creating pages in development which work out fine in our development environment. But when we move the page into production, each value which results from the ResultSet getString() method is having multiple blank spaces appended to the end of the value. So, for example, a 5 digit zip code field is really showing up with a length of 8 or 9 because there are extra spaces added to the end of the value.
We are able to work around this problem by using the trim() method, but this is getting quite tedious to do to every single page in the site. It is very annoying because the problem does not exist in the development environment.
So you figure there must be a difference in our development and production environments. But there really isn't. Here is the details for both environments:
OS: Windows NT 4.0
Web Server: Apache with Tomcat setup as a plugin
Database: Sybase ASA 6.0.3
JDK: 1.3
Apache and Tomcat were installed from the same download on both servers. Sybase was installed from the same CD on both servers - and the JDBC Driver (SybDriver) was copied from one server to the next.
Sorry for the long explanation - but does anyone have any idea what could be occurring? Why are the extra spaces being appended to the production pages and not the development pages?
As always, thanks in advance for any suggestions!
-- ChrisHello Paul,
Thank you for taking the time to analyze this case.
The data in the system comes from two different sources. The first source is a nightly feed from a legacy system. The second source is user input via the JSP application. The records that were inserted from the nightly feed have an accurate length() value (meaning there is no untrimmed spaces trailing along.) But the values coming in from the application have extra spaces appended to them. In the development environment, however, both sources provide properly trimmed data.
If I enter an 8 character last name into the web form in the production app, the value which ends up in the database upon submission will have 2 to 3 extra spaces. I know that this sounds strange - and believe me, it is boggling everyone here. I suspect this problem has to do with the Tomcat installation - even though it was installed identically in each server.
I think we are just going to have live with using the trim() for every database submission. As always, thank you for the help, and all ideas are always welcome.

Strange Problems with Messages
I've been experiencing some strange problems with Messages.
1) Sometimes my messages are displayed on screen. I type into the input box and hit enters. Then message disappears and does not show above in the chat box. I later find out that the message was delivered yet it doesn't show up in my chat.
2) Sometimes I see duplicate Chat windows on the left rail for the same contact, this is usually in conjuction with error #1.
3) Sometimes I can unable to dlete chat windows. I click the x and it does nothing. I right click and choose Close Chat and it does nothing
4) When searching the left rail for open chats, the app gets really confused and show strange results, when deleting the search the chat window gets really odd order, nothing to do with sort or recent chatsNobody else is experiencing these problems?

Problem with displaying BLOB images on JSP page using a servlet
hi. I have a big problem with displaying BLOB images using JSP. I have a servlet that connects to the oracle database, gets a BLOB image , reads it, and then displays it using a BinaryStream. The problem is , this works only when i directly call that servlet, that is http://localhost:8080/ImageServlet. It doesn't work when i try to use that servlet to display my image on my JSP page (my JSP page displays only a broken-image icon ) I tried several coding approaches with my servlet (used both Blob and BLOB objects), and they work just fine as long as i display images explicitly using only the servlet.
Here's what i use : ORACLE 10g XE , Eclipse 3.1.2, Tomcat 5.5.16 , JDK 1.5
here is one of my image servlet's working versions (the essential part of it) :
BLOB blob=null;
rset=st.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM IMAGES WHERE ID=1");
while (rset.next())
blob=((OracleResultSet)rset).getBLOB(2);
response.reset();
response.setContentType("image/jpeg");
response.addHeader("Content-Disposition","filename=42.jpeg");
ServletOutputStream ostr=response.getOutputStream();
InputStream istr=blob.getBinaryStream(1L);
int size=blob.getBufferSize();
int len=-1;
byte[] buff = new byte[size];
while ((len=istr.read( buff ))!=-1 ) {
ostr.write(buff,0,len);
response.flushBuffer();
ostr.close(); and my JSP page code :
<img src="/ImageServlet" border="0" > If you could just tell me what i'm doing wrong here , or if you could show me your own solutions to that problem , i would be very greatful ,cos i'm realy stuck here , and i'm rather pressed for time too. Hope someone can help.I turns out that it wasn't that big of a problem after all. All i had to do was to take the above code and place it into another JSP page instead of into a servlet like i did before. Then i just used that page as a source for my IMG tag in my first JSP. It works perfectly well. Why this doesn't work for servlets i still don't know, but it's not a problem form me anymore . Ofcourse if someone knows the answer , go ahead and write. I would still appriceatte it.
here's the magic tag : <img src="ImageJSP.jsp" border="0" > enjoy : ) -

I have a early 2011 Macbook pro 13 inch, I'm running Lion 10.7.4, and i want to upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion. Is it safe for my computer or are people experiencing problems with displays and Battery life?
Do Not post stuff about how Airplay doesnt work, because i dont have Apple TV and dont need to hear about it.If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

Strange problem with Adobe Acrobat X (crash without a trace)
Hi,
I have a strange problem with Adobe Acrobat. It happens totally randomly, it leaves no signs in system logs.
What is happening: during my work Adobe Acrobat sudennly crashes. After a crash I cannot run it again - system seems to do something for a second, but then nothing happends. When i look into taks manager - there are no processes of Acrobat.exe. It just doesn't want to run. What I need to do is to reinstall whole Adobe Acrobat - which requires restart.
I've already tried to restart system after crash, it doesn't help - reinstall is required.
Sometimes everyting is fine for a 3 months, sometimes crash happens a week after the previous one. It also happens in very different situations (somtimes while opening a file, sometimes when doing something simple, sometimes in more complex tasks).
Has anyone encountered a similar problem?
Acrobat version: 10.1.1

Strange problem with Subviews on 1.0 Beta
Hi,
I'm having a strange problem with SubViews on 1.0 Beta. I'm not sure If I'm being stupid and have done something wrong, or if there's a problem here.
My application is directly based on one of the examples, so the structure etc is almost identical. I've simplified the files below to avoid confusing the issue.
The default landing page (greeting.jsp) looks like this:
<%@ taglib declarations for HTML and CORE taglibs %>
<HTML>
<HEAD><title>Insulation Layer Demo</title></HEAD>
<body bgcolor="white">
<f:view>
<jsp:include page="sysstatus.jsp" />
<!-- other strictly HTML content -->
</f:view>
</body>
</HTML>
sysstatus.jsp looks like this:
<%@ taglib declarations for HTML and CORE taglibs %>
<f:subview id="SystemStatusView">
<h:form id="systemStatusForm">
<p><h:selectboolean_checkbox id="System1Available" value="#{SystemStatus.system1Available}"/>System 1<br/>
<h:selectboolean_checkbox id="System2Available" value="#{SystemStatus.system2Available}"/>System 2</p>
<p><h:command_button id="submit" action="success" value="submit" /></p>
</h:form>
</f:subview>When I view this page, the checkboxes all seem to work okay (in that their state is preserved across calls etc), but the formatting is very screwy. The resulting page looks something like:
<chkbox1> <chkbox2> <Submit>
System 1
System 2
<Other HTML content from greeting.jsp>When I look at the HTML source code being generated, it is genuinly being generated as above, that is, all the form tags first, and then the rest of the content. Interestinly, I tried adding a ${SystemStatus.system2Available} into the body text, and it was rendered as literal text (i.e. not evaluated as EL), which is very curious -- makes me wonder if the included file is included as text, rather than JSP, although the custom taglibs and <f:form> tags etc are not in the generated HTML.
If I lift all the content between the <h:form> tags (inclusive) out of sysstatus.jsp and put it in greeting.jsp in place of the <jsp:include> tag, all is well.
Any ideas? All help gratefully recieved!
Thanks,
PaulPersonally, I think it is a bug in the rendering model of JSF itself because if you include any non-JSF tags, they don't get rendered according to my understanding of the what the spec says (in the location the tags are written).
The only workaround that I could come up with is to use straight JSF tags in all of your layers. Things are then rendered the way that they "should" be rendered.
You could try wrapping all of your HTML tags in <f:verbatim> tags and see if that helps.
Good luck!
David

Any Way to Show All Reminders in Notification Center?
