T510 Brightness Issues

Hi everyone,
I have a T510 with nvidia nvs 3100m graphic card windows 7 professional 64 bit, for the past few months when I come to windows login screen brightness automatically dims and then after windows open within few seconds brightness is restored. It happens on an intermittent basis. I have updated my BIOS, windows and GPU as well,  but that made no difference. Tried finding a solution for these symptoms online but had no luck.
Any help would be appreciated
T510 with Intel i5 M520@ 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Nvidia NVS 3100M.

Hello llaksh, welcome to Lenovo forum!
Please open up the powermanager (right click on battery icon in task bar)
Go to tab "Global Powersetting" choose the menu "Dynamic Brightness Control and uncheck the occasions, when you don´t want a decrease of the screen brightness.
Hint: I set it enabled cause it save battery time.

  • Blackberry needs to sort out he brightness issue on the Q10 - Its very bad

Blackberry needs to release an update for its Q10 device ASAP.  The device has brightness issues since it was launched. In a response to a Forum member's complaint about the screen dimness, a support staff here said that's how the device is made with no auto-brightness toggle to conserve battery. I believe customers should be given the options to turn on or off this option as they wish. Please fix this problem BB

No he doesnt have a screen problem Jason. It is the Q10 that has a screen problem. Stop misleading people here. Blackberry needs to come up with a fix. The fact that they are not even responding to peoples' concerns on the Forum shows why they will continue to suffer pooor sales.
I am extremely disapointed at Blackberry!!

Any suggestions besides reverting back to 8.1.? Not sure if I had the screen dimmed all the way or brightened all the way when it was upgrading, or if it even mattered.

  • Auto-Brightness Issue. It randomly worked, then stop working all together.

    Auto-Brightness Issue.
It randomly worked before, now it's not giving off any brightness at all. Unfortunately it stopped coming on all together. I tried updating it Itunes and it comes back on but tried to restore my Ipod touch. After restoring it, it said "restore error -50" and the backlight STILL doesn't come on, not even a flicker. PLEASE HELP!!!

Okay I tried to restore using iTunes and a little screen came up stating: An error occured while restoring this iPod (-50). I don't know what that means. It still ask do I want to continue to restore, but always gives me that same message. To make matters even worse, there is no Apple store in my town. The nearest is 3 hours away.

  • T510: display issues(Bright pixels that wouldn't go away) -support?

Shortly after purchasing a new T510, I started to have problems with the display (Bright pixels that wouldn’t go away).  I figured it was a BIOS or driver issue.  However as my company purchased about 80 of these machines and I turned out to be the only one with the issue, I called support.
I also purchased the onsite 24hour support for three years, so I called Lenovo and in a couple days (not 24hours) they came in a replaced the LCD panel, which they assured me was the issue.  Not even an hour or two after the repair tech (David) left the problem started happening again.
I called back and Lenovo now indicated it has to be the motherboard.  Ok, so a couple days later David came in and replace the motherboard.  Now I purchased these units fully loaded, discrete graphics extra memory, high res, etc.  The motherboard they replaced it with did not have the Nvidia card, instead just the onboard graphics, which A. is no what I purchased, and B. not equivalent or better.
So David ripped out the new inferior board and put the old broken one back in, so I could at least continue with my job, with the intermittent pixel issue. I should also mention the screen went blurry at the same time the pixel issue happened, so I would have to reboot to restore the monitor.  David then ordered another Motherboard.
A week went by and no one called me back, so I called Lenovo again to find out what the heck was going on and why I didn’t have a new one ready in waiting within 24 hours. I was informed that is not how the warrantee works, only that they will respond in 24 hours and that the verbiage on their site around the warrantee was not perfectly clear.  Wow. OK…  I then asked when they expect to have this fixed and it turns out the part I need is on back order.
The part finally arrives. In another 4-5 days, however, I have a business trip coming up and I can’t risk yet another defective part. With my current flaky monitor I can at least get by.  So I schedule a time with David the repair tech to swap it out when I return.
I get the new Motherboard installed and I get all these video errors and other things start going horribly wrong.  David indicates it is a driver/bios issue and I need to upgrade/install drivers to remedy it.  Okay, so I do that, spend hours trying to get it to work. Turns out this motherboard is even worse and it crashes every time I try and use an external monitor or if the Nvidia 3100 kicks in for hardware acceleration.
I continue to work under the belief that this is a driver issue and try to fix it, however one of the MANY crashes ends up corrupting my Window 7 install, now throwing blue screens all the time and destroying my development env in the process. So I rebuild the machine and it just keeps happening.  This is now days of lost work that I can’t bill for.
I call Lenovo again to try and get this lemon replaced.  I get a hold of Jerome who punts me to Lenton, who punts me to Nate Bennet.  Nate seems like a reasonable guy and informs me that at their level of service they can only repair the units and are happy to continue working through this. By now this is gone on long enough and I want to have the laptop replaced, 1 out of 80, this one is a lemon. Nate appears to agree and kick off an escalation process to have this case reviewed and informs me that someone will call me back in 24-48 hours (business days that is).  Okay this is still incredibly inconvenient, but at least I believed we are making forward progress.
36 Hours goes by and no one calls me back, so I call Lenovo yet again.  I get a hold of Julius.   Julius informs me he’ll have a supervisor call me back right away, as there was not one available.
48 hours later I call Lenovo again, as you can guess no one has called me back.  I get a hold of Michael.  I again explain the whole situation to Michael and ask to speak to a supervisor, again...  Which again I’m informed is not possible as there is not one available.  Michael indicates that he’ll have a supervisor call me back.  This time I say I can wait on the line because that is what everyone else told me and nothing happened.  Michael then informs me that he is Michael and would not let that happen and assured me that a supervisor would call me back right away. I relent; verify my contact info with Michael and it all seems to be accurate.
So again nearing the end of the day no one has called me back, I call Lenovo yet again.  This time I get a hold of Phil.  I once again explain the whole situation.  Phil is very apologetic, but still is unable to produce a supervisor.  Phil indicates he’ll put sticky notes on his supervisor’s machine to contact me back. I guess these guys are probably using a T510 as well and can’t read their email either.
I ask for the name of this supervisor because clearly Lenovo is filling me with horse s&^% at this point.  There is a clear pause and all he says it "Carter.., that is his last name I don’t know his first name." Okay really, so you know this guy well enough to put sticky notes on his monitor, but you only know his last name.  Now I know I’m being lied to, but what can I do.
So here I am with a busted laptop that crashes at least 3-4 times a day I can’t use the discrete graphics that I paid for and only supports the LCD panel built into it.  In previous experience, with a different manufacturer, after the first few failed attempts they would have replaced the unit.  I guess I should be angry with the guy that convinced us to give Lenovo machines a try for the next refresh (That was me by the way).
I really have no idea how to proceed with this one.  This is first time in my career that I have ever been treated like this.  I really have no idea what to say.

I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt on this one, there is a message at the top of the forum stating:
"Welcome to Lenovo's Discussion Community!  Please note our guidelines when posting."
    if you read the Forum Guidelines it states quite clearly;
    Title threads appropriately
. The title of a thread should accurately reflect the subject of the discussion and be as technically specific as possible.  Avoid inflammatory or emotional statements that do not aid the development of the conversation. Thread titles are indexed not only for search functions within the forum, but often externally in Google, Yahoo, etc. Proper thread titles will aid the active members of the Lenovo community, as well as non-members who may be searching more broadly. Example of a good thread title: T Thinkpad Blue Screens after suspend . Example of a bad thread title: Stupid computer locks up - worthless piece of junk. Moderators may alter thread titles to be more meaningful if less than appropriate titles are chosen.
I'm certain the edited title represents the actual real hardware problem at hand better than the original because it's more descriptive and accurate and will therefore attract the attention of the members who have experienced the same or similar situations to comment and offer advice based on their experience.
Please do take time to read our guidelines as I'm sure you'll find some other helpful and informative tips in them.

  • T510 DISPLAY Issue: Intermittent high Contrast/Brightness

Hi folks - This is my first Lenovo forum submission and I will do my best to describe the problem with my laptops' video/display. I'm all ears for your suggestions.
    *Issue*
The display would occassionally dip down in brightness/contrast then change up to a very HIGH contrast level on its own. The desktop icons, background image & browser images become un-sightly bright BEYOND your normal Lenovo Power Manager settings. All the white hues turn even brighter, and some hues are NOT viewable at all on certain backdrops. Usually, it resolves itself after several minutes. Then it's business as usual.
I do not believe it has anything to do with the Power Manager settings (e.g. Idle Time, brightness control, Battery vs AC power, etc.). It simply occurs on it's own then disappears. A reboot can help and so does closing the lid and re-logging into Windows. But who wants to practice that technique after paying over $1600 for a professional grade business laptop?
I found only ONE forum message that came close to reporting the problem, found in the body of a message and NOT as a subject (SEARCH:  "screen image fades as if you lose contrast")

  • Laptop-mode / laptop-mode-tools lcd brightness issue

I have an issue with my lcd brightness config in laptop-mode tools
    here is the brightness values
    [venky@ARCHROCKS ~]$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness
    levels: 72 24 12 24 36 48 60 72 84 100
    current: 72
    [venky@ARCHROCKS ~]$
following is my lcd-bightness.conf file under /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d
    # Configuration file for Laptop Mode Tools module lcd-brightness.
    # For more information, consult the laptop-mode.conf(8) manual page.
    # LCD brightness settings
    # Using these settings, you can make laptop mode tools automatically adjust
    # your LCD's brightness settings. The settings are extremely simple -- they
    # only allow for the execution of a command, nothing more. The reason for this
    # is that LCD brightness settings are very different between laptop vendors.
    # Suggestions for commands:
    # * If your system has the file "/proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness" (VID may
    # be VID1 or similar), use this file as BRIGHTNESS_OUTPUT, and use
    # the command "echo <value>". The possible values can be listed using the
    # command:
    # cat /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness
    # * If you have a file /sys/class/backlight/.../brightness, then you can use
    # that file as BRIGHTNESS_OUTPUT, and the command "echo <value>".
    # As far as I understand it the values are between 0 and
    # the value contained in the file /sys/class/backlight/.../max_brightness.
    # * For Toshiba laptops, use the command "toshset" with the -lcd or -inten
    # command. Read the toshset(1) manual page for more information on the
    # parameters for this command. If you use this command, set
    # BRIGHTNESS_OUTPUT to "/dev/null".
    # IMPORTANT: In versions 1.36 and earlier, these settings were included in the
    # main laptop-mode.conf configuration file. If they are still present, they
    # overrule the settings in this file. To fix this, simply delete the settings
    # from the main config file.
    # Should laptop mode tools control LCD brightness?
    CONTROL_BRIGHTNESS=1
    # Commands to execute to set the brightness on your LCD
    BATT_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 24"
    LM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 100"
    NOLM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 72"
    BRIGHTNESS_OUTPUT="/proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness"
so basically while in AC power i want full brightness when on battery i want one notch more than the minimum brightness and when laptop-mode is not running i want 2 notches less than maximum brightness.
the battery mode works fine when i unplug the computer but when i replug the AC power it goes to 72 instead of 100. I mean laptop mode is running coz when I remove ac power it goes to 24 again.
    Am I doing something wrong?

When you plug in AC power, laptop-mode probably turns down, so LCD brightness is set to 72. It depends on if you have set in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_ON_AC to 0 or 1.

  • Video Message - brightness issue which needs resol...

    Hello
I am currently running Skype 6.5.0.158 and using a Microsoft LifeCam Studio webcam. When using my webcam for normal calls, or even checking the Tools -> Options -> Video Settings, then I can see my picture perfectly fine - colours are vibrant etc.
However when I use the Video Message feature I see a very dark picture. It's like the brightness has been turned down. My room has all the lights on and there is a fair bit of light coming through the window. I've tested this with a Logitech webcam (not sure of the model) which appears to work without error.
Please see attached document with examples. And yes, I know it's a Shrek soft toy and that my webcam is in mirrored mode at certain points.
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thank-you.

I don't have that problem, but using the model before that one, I can tell you the camera settings can easily cause the issue.  Microsoft Lifecams tend to have a "truecolor" option and several other "auto" settings.  The best thing to try is to go into the "Video settings" - "Webcam Settings" in Skype and try toggling the settings and moving the sliders to a point where the video appears bright enough to you. See attachment.
I do know that the overlay software that comes with the camera does not work.  You could also try 3rd party virtual camera software like "Manycam" (Manycam.com).  I have used that software and selected the Manycam Virtual Camera dropdown in Skype to be able to use the overlay software and the Manycam software to add even more overlays successfully.  You may also have better luck controlling the brightness in Manycam, if it doesn't seem to appear properly without it.  Be aware when Manycam is running, the normal Lifecam drop-down will not work, until Manycam is closed.

  • Apple Cinema Display 23" brightness issue while using with Microsoft Vista

    Hello there,
I have the following issue and was wondering if someone has an idea what the reason is or what can I do to fix this:
I have a 23" Apple Cinema Display running with a MacPro 2,8 GHz. When I switch to PC using BootCamp 2.1 with Windows Vista Service Pack 1 32bit the screen becomes extremely dark.
At first, on the PC side, the display has the correct brightness but after two seconds it switches to a very low brightness setting.
When I go back to the Mac side the brightness setting on my Cinema Display has changed to the lowest point.
I also have a MacBookPro, with Microsoft XP installed also using BootCamp (I cannot find the version of this Boot Camp, but it is an earlier version) to change to PC. In XP, there is a driver installed that allows me to use a slider on the PC to control the monitor brightness. But with Vista this slider is nonexistent.
I already tried changing the graphic's card NVIDIA 8800 driver to see if I can manipulate the brightness on the monitor. I realized there is brigthness slider on the Nvidia driver, but when you make brighter, the colors just get messed up, and the brightness stays as dark as before.
We have lately upgraded to Snow Leopard and had installed Spyder on the Mac side to create a monitor profile for the Cinema Display. I already deleted the profile to see if there is a change. Nothing. I already went back in time on my PC (Restore Point), also nothing.
Could I download a driver for Vista, so that I have a brightness slider on the PC side, so that I can adequately change the brightness to its correct setting.
It is amazing how the lack of correct brightness in a monitor, can ruin your entire working day! Very frustrating!
It would be greatly appreciated if someone has a solution for this issue! Thanks a lot!
    Emil

Okay, I came across a thread that implies there is a problem with using the Apple ADC-to-DVI adapter to attach the older "acrylic" 23" Cinema Display to a Mac Pro DVI graphics card. Basically, the workaround is to NOT use the USB part of the adapter (disconnect it).
    1) In OS X, set the desired display brightness.
    2) Disconnect the USB cable coming from the converter to the Mac.
    3) Restart into Windows.
The brightness setting should now remain as it was under OS X.
Confirmed to work on my Mac Pro v1,1 (dual 2.66 Core 2 Duo) with nVidia GeForce 7300 GT video card running Windows 7 x64.
Link here: <http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=790910> for credit to resolution.
Of course, you lose the functionality of the 2-port built-in USB hub in the Cinema Display, but an external USB hub can make up for that.

  • T510 boot issues - power button flashes

I have a T510 that is acting really strange.
The laptop will do the following once shut down for any extended period of time.
When I open it up and press the power button the power button, keyboard light , hdd light will all flash. 5 seconds or so will pass and then it will do the same thing, never actually booting up. I'll pull the power and batteries and repeat the process and the thing will do the same thing. Eventually it will boot if I repeat the steps enough.
This just started happening recently. It will run fine once the system actually turns on. I have updated all drivers, I have updated the BIOS and all other software. I am highly doubting this is a windows issue as it never even POSTs.
The flashing lights almost act like an error code but I couldn't find anything regarding 1 quick slow flash by the power button.
    Any suggestions?

Maybe the keyboard cable or the keyboard itself? Nothing shows on screen during a false start?

  • Brightness issue after awaking from suspend

I hope it's in the right category...
After waking up notebook from suspend in Gnome (I didn't try it in KDE), the brightness is at its full. Normally, it is set to like 30%. Any ideas why is brightness full after awaking and how to make it to keep the brightness as it was before suspending?
    Thanks

Hm, that is interesting. I had ACPI installed. Then, I installed acpid and added acpid to the daemons in /etc/rc.conf. But that didn't fix the issue. I even tried to change brightness settings in Gnome but that didn't help either. I also tried to fix the issue according to Wiki entry in acpid. It did not work.
If it helps, I'm pasting my /etc/acpi/handler.sh:

  • Lumia 735 screen brightness issue

My new Lumia 735 has an issue with the screen brightness dimming for no reason. For completeness I have done a reset, it is nor on auto, and does I when on mains or battery. The screen is supposed to be extremely bright when set to max. However it is for about 10 secs then dims then goes bright again then dims for ages then suddenly goes bright. I have been Through all settings and changed/tried all things to no avail. I think this is not a unique problem and is prob software linked. Anyone got any ideas?

Although you say you've set the screen so the brightness is NOT set to 'auto', this sure sounds like the light sensor is still active.
I would first try a power cycle to see if that clears things up (which I doubt, but no harm trying, right?).  Then do a back up and try a hard reset.
After the hard reset, test to see if the brightness is working properly.  If not, then it may be malfunctioning light sensor and require repair/replacement.  If it's working properly, then slowly start adding apps one by one and testing again, to see if one of them is causing the problem.

  • 56HM195 DLP Clunking noise dim/bright issue

Got an old 56HM195 that I inherited, been running good until the other day it started making a clunking noise.  The picture dims and brights alternately with each 'clunk'.  The bit of lamp I can see shining thru the rear of the housing appears steady.  So the dimming is in the mechanism, perhaps?  I can hear a fan running.  The vents aren't too dusty.  I pulled the lamp, visually it looks good.  It is an OEM type I put in back in 2012, not one of the cheapos.  The picture has been slowly dimming with age (gets a lot of use) and I knew I was headed for a new lamp eventually, however the clanking/dimming has me stumped, especially when from the rear peeking in the cracks the lamp light appears to be steady up to a certain area, I'm assuming past the light engine, then you see the flashing.  The clunking/flashing isn't quite per second but is is close to that and very regular, not intermittent or variable.  The picture is otherwise flawless, I have no static, no spots, no green/blue areas, the colors are as they should be as far as I see.
When I'm not turning it on or off, and it's just sitting there flashing the screen bright/dim and clunking, IIRC the led lights don't show any errors.
When I turn the television back off, the clanking continues until the set reaches the end of its cooldown cycle, at which time it quits making the noise.
Fan going bad?  Light engine crapping out?  Is it really just the lamp?  Reluctant to buy a cheap lamp, but also reluctant to buy a full-priced one when I'm not sure that is the fix.  Any ideas?  If no one replies I'll be tempted to do dirt cheap lamp knowing it's a piece of junk, on the off chance it is a lamp issue, then I'll go from there.  With Wally selling comparably-sized flat screens in the $400 range now I'm not going to pour tons of money in this but I don't mind feeding it lamps every three or four years, either.

Thanks for the links. Yes, I've tried everything, and so did a Genius at the  Store today. He took it in the back, then came out, saying that he thinks it's a logic board problem. He told me that he had hit the button to turn it on, and that it had not responded immediately, but came on a few moments later. Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to replicate this behavior. He said he really didn't know much more about it, and that he wished he could, but he was "bound by 's rules" on the matter and had to send me along with the out-of-warranty line. So I'm heading to a 3rd-party guy in the next day or to, and I'm gonna let him run some diagnostics on it.
I don't know what he was talking about with the turning on thing, but it seems to turn on just fine for me–and I've pushed that button all night now.
Hopefully the second opinion will cast some light onto this issue.

  • Pavilion 13-a010dx Brightness Issue

Hello, I'm having an issue with my Pavilion 13-a010dx x360 Convertible PC.
The issue: So, I have the computer plugged in, the display is as bright as anything. I can see absolutely anything without strain on my eyes. But when I unplug the PC from the charger, the display gets very dim, and it makes it very uncomfortable to look at.
I tried to adjust all the brightness settings in the control panel and the Intel HD Graphics 4400 control panel. Didn't help at all.
Does anyone have a solution for this? I have all my graphics drivers updated. I even downloaded the latest one from this website. I have pretty much all of my brightness settings at max.
Any help to this issue would be appreciated.

    Hi @ThatoneHPGuy ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 13-a010dx x360 Convertible PC and issues with the Lid closing and needing a reboot. Try this document on Power options changing the power options and maybe restoring system options would help.
I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which could help and only updates that come through the HP Support Assistant.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system.
    Hope something here helps.
    Thanks.
