T510 Capacitor noise

Dear Lenovo’s support team I just bought a brand new laptop LEVONO THINKPAD T510 Model: 4313CTO. The reason of this email is that I need your help to solve a problem that my laptop has since I received it. My laptop has an abnormal electronic noise, like a short circuit, I have experience in technical support, and I can notice that is a noise similar a capacitor noise. I test it with LENOVO THINKVANTAGE TOOLBOX running the SYSTEM STRESS TEST and it was successful , but I am still worried because it could probably has problems in few weeks, because of the capacitor noise. I am not in the US, I am now in Venezuela, where I live. I know that the warranty for these laptops are worldwide, and I would like to know how could I solve my problem, but I don’t want to be without laptop for too much time. Actually, I am disappointed with LENOVO because this is the second laptop that I have bought this year, and the first one has problem since one month after the purchase (LENOVO THINKPAD SL400 MODELO:2743A65), and I am still without computer, because the repair center still has my laptop, the report or ticket number is 434266. I hope that you take into account all this information to solve my problem, Thank you for your attention, I will be waiting for any information

Is this a loud noise? My old Z60t had electrical noises esp. during LAN activity, and my W500 has electrical noises pretty much all the time. Even my desktop PC with an Asus motherboard makes strange electrical noises. All of these machines are 100% stable under any load.

  • Noises...? Slightly Worrying

    Hi,
I recently installed my new MSI GTX 660 TI, and it started making this horrific screeching noise, I appear to have fixed the screeching by un-installing my old GFX's drivers and updating the 660's drivers
Now that the screeching has gone I can now hear an underlying sound, I do not know if this sound was underneath the screech but not hearable or that its a new sound after the screeching.
This underlying sound is a kind of rattling, grinding, grating type of sound. I don't believe it is coming from the fans as I turned them all the way down when the sound was happening. There is also a high pitch beeping but I'm guessing that is a normal sound?
This sound only happens during games and some games it is louder than others. I just wanted to ask around to see if anyone else has this problem or if this sound is normal.
I really don't want to do through the hassle of RMA'ing it so if any of you can shed some light it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

if noise is coming while gaming and some games more i think it is safe to say it is because of load. Probably capacitor noise or another equipment making noise under stress. some of these noises are normal some of them are dangerous but no way to tell unless before hear it.

  • Constant electical buzzing noise when off. Normal?

I have a W520 that makes a soft electrical buzzing hum, kind of like a florescent light bulb.  It does this only when I turn off the machine, and the hum changes pitch every 2 seconds, but it is constant.  The only way to get it to stop humming is if I turn on the machine, or remove and reinstall the battery.
The computer is new.  I bought it direct from Lenovo and just received it on 7/14/11.  It has been making this noice since I got it, but because this is my very first laptop, I don't know if the noise is normal.
I called Lenovo tech support and upgraded my drivers as advised, but this hasn't solved the problem, so I was told to call Post Sales Department on Monday to see if I can get a replacement W520.
Has anyone ever experienced this with their W520?  Is this electrical humming noise normal?  I have confirmed that it is not a fan noise, or a hard drive noise. There is no movement or vibration in the machine, it just likes to hum all the time when it's supposed to be off.  Our IT guy at work thinks it may have a bad connection somewhere that is causing capacitor noise.
    My W520 is a model 4270.  Core i7-2720QM, Quadro 1000M, 8 GB SDRAM/500 GB HDD, running Windows 7.
    Thanks.

Thanks.  I got a return authorization and shipped the computer back to Lenovo today.  The post sales dept is going to give me a refund when they get the computer, and once I get the refund, I'll have to order a new W520.
Hopefully, the new W520 will not have the buzzing noise problem.
I'm really glad that the post sales dept allowed me to return the computer instead of having me send it to a depot for repairs.  I wish they could have just exchanged it for a new one, but because it's over 21 days from the order date, they have to give me a refund instead.

  • Why does my DAQ counter count more when a capacitor is used to eliminate noise

    Hi,
In my application i need to measure the speed of the motor using an encoder. The output of the encoder is a bit noisy (around 200 mV of noise.).Actually we are using a Siemens variable speed drive and it is the switching noise even after perfect shielding. Also the ouput of the encoder has a DC shift in waveform fr 383mV.When i connect to the counter channel (source :to count the pulses or gate :to measure frequency) the readings are high than actual. Then we conected a 0.1 microfarad capacitor across the counter channel and the DIO Ground. Then checked the waveform using a 60 mHz tecktronic oscilloscope. The waveform was without noise but the shape was a bit distorted, meaning there was no sharp rising edges and has a slow rise. But still there was a dc level shift for 383 mv.When i measured using counter the count was abnormal.Actual reading should show 1000 pulses /second, but with a capacitor it was counting 4789,5000, 356 etc.
Please let me know where the problem is. IS there any specific input signal rise time/fall time etc that the counter requires. Also will the dc level shift of 383 mV affect the counting.
I am using DAQ mx example vi(namely low frequency count as my freq range is 0 to 4000 hz)and also tried with simple digital count. Also please tell me if there is any problem in the connections
    Thanks,
    Sudha

While putting the capacitor between your signal and ground will git rid of any transients, it will also "round" out your signal. Your square wave provided by the encoder can be approximated by the sum:
    y(t) = a_0 + sum(k=0...infinity, a_k*cos(k*f*t)) + sum(k=0...infinity, b_k*sin(k*f*t))
The capacitor has a frequency-depenent resitant (called reactance) which decreases with increasing frequency.
    The reactance is:
    X(f) = 1 / 2*PI*f*C
Where f is your frequency and C=1uF. What happens is the capacitor shorts the higher frequency harmonics to ground and makes your square waveform "ring" at the edges.
If this ringing causes you to swing high-and-low close enough to the switching point, then you could count pulses that really aren't there. What you really need is some sort of hysteresis to prevent this false switching. You should put this after the bypass capacitor and before the counter.
Also, another question is: What are the output levels of your encoder? The 383mV DC offset shouldn't affect a counter, but if your logic "high" voltage doesn't exceed about 2V then you might be hitting a region of metastability: where the counter randomly switches high/low.

  • T510 Built-in Mic Noise

    Hello,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T510, which has two built-in mic inputs. When trying to record something, the right input contributes mostly with noise, while the left one records normally (this is verified by listening to the left and right speakers, respectively). The same problem occurs when using Windows 7 or Ubuntu 11.04 (and older versions), these are the only operating systems I tried. Is this a hardware problem? Any ideas?

    brendan--
Best thing to do with Skype is to bypass the internal mic altogether. For roughly $40 or a little less, you can get a USB headphone and mic setup. I have one I use to teach with, as well as use for Skype calls, and it beats the built in mic all hollow. Plus, it keeps private conversations private.

  • "clicky" noise on the "N" after cleaning under t510 laptop.

Hi all, I decided to pop off a few keys on the t510 model thinkpad to clean under the keyboard. I carefully removed the keys and i made sure the hinge mechanisms are intact and the metal are all intact. but i noticed after placing the keys back, the N key is "clicky" as in if i click it lets say in the upper left hand side of the key, the key depressing makes a "clicky" noise, while the other keys on the laptop all make the sort of dull sound when you depress the keys. the weird thing is that if i press the N key in a different region of the key, the sound does not come up...does that mean that the mechanism under the "N" key was damaged when i cleaned it? i sure hope not considering how thinkpad T series are durable and reliable in almost every possible way and it would be a shame that a user can not even remove a key to clean under a laptop for maintenance..
Thanks in advance for any responses!

When I said "playing with", I didn't mean that what you were doing was wrong or unnecessary.  I don't know. I would need to see it. The key clips on at 4 corners, so I thought one corner might not be attached or that one of the 4 corners had the clip damaged when the key was taken off. I have certainly seen them damaged in that way. The reason I guess that they are not considered removable is that a Lenovo Repair place would probably replace the keyboard, rather than taking it apart. I may be wrong. As I said, I fix them all the time.

  • T510 noise problem

It was super quiet before running 2k10, I knew that this game gave the professor a lot pressure, but the result Thinkpad could not be quiet again, although the noise was not loud. I tried several methods to figure out what was problem such as speedfan, but this software could not work well in my t510. This laptop's performance was very well as my expectation except the noisy problem. By the way, I mean it is noisy without running big games. Could someone give some advices? Someone said that it was not lenovo fault, it was because of the new intel processor. But I thought if the laptop kept noisy like this, it would be a common laptop, not Thinkpad

Please let me know if TPFanControl works for you. I have read of people using it on T410 and W510 Thinkpads but not T510 yet. Would be curious to know if it works.

  • How to stop hard disk noise on T61

    Hello everyone,
I have a T61 and everything works well except the hard disk which is constantly working. The result is a gentle noise on the bottom right
of laptop, always present. I used to have a T42 which when configured on XP to turn off hard disk (through power management), completly turned it off. I could then read or write long open files with a completly silent laptop (used tpfancontrol for controling fan, but this is not the problem here) until I save document or explcitly trigger the hdd (a completly silent laptop is a delight!).
The noise of the present T61 is bearable, a kind of a whisper, but once it stops it gets really better for your ears. My problem is that the power manager (set to turn off disk after 3 minutes) works, but something is constantly accessing the hard disk, which prevents the power manager to turn the HDD off. So, sometimes it happens that after 3 minutes the HDD stops, and a hsort time latter, say 15 seconds, it turns on again because "something" used the hdd.
The worse is that, most of the time, the hdd is triggered prior to the 3 minutes, so that it keeps always running!!
I can see this as the hdd green light flashes.
This is always the case, with or without internet, AC or DC.
I tried to stop some services (including indexing), but I stopped looking because of the number of services to check!
How do I know what service/program is being written on hdd at the specific time where I notice it, or makes it work, such that I can possibly disable it?
This is maybe a XP SP§ issue I think, but I think many here have noticed this constant activity on lenovo´ T61?
Any advice on possible strategy to find out who write what on the hdd or other solution?
I really plan to fix this problem because the T61 as it is now is really good (with however minor problems),
and i think many of us should benefit from this issue..

I would say it´s quite impossible on newer systems, to get the harddrive off for more than a few seconds.
Many user have tried that, but no one had success.
Another, but little dirty, possibility is, to take some piece of rubber or something and put it under the palm rest where the hdd is.
But beware, there is a little hole in hdd that have to be open to get some air.
This dirty trick will lower the permanent sound of your hdd.

  • Noise problem on analog channels

I have 18 analog channels connected in differential mode to a 6225 DAQmx card. I am trying to measure 14 pressures and 4 temperatures. I have connected the transducers directly to the AI connectors on my SCB68:s. I have also connected the shields from all transducers to the shields crew on the SCB68 to aviod noise.
My problem is that I still get noise on my analog channels. I have configured the channels using MAX in differential mode. I have read the post "Field wiring an dnoise considerations for analog signals" for a better understanding of analog data aquistion using NI-DAQmx, still I am stuck with my noise.
Can anyone help me? I have ran out of ideas.
I get the best result using an capacitor between the positive and negative terminals on the daq board.
    PLEASE HELP!
    /Anders

    Hi Anders,
Quite unlikely that card is inducing some internal noise.
By selecting the range btw 0 to 1 V, you are only changing the ADC gain settings.
What i suggest is that, you give a standard input of fixed voltage ,say like a dry cell or a function generator to the Analog input and check if you are still getting the kind of noise you are getting with your sensor attatched.
Check this for both the ranges you talk about with suitable inputs.
Now, if you do not get noise, then connect sensor in a suitable single ended mode and see if this gives you a better reading.
If you are still getting noise, then i would suspect for improper chassis grounding
do tell if this solves your problem

  • MacTel iMac and the dreaded fan noise...

a buddy of mine bought an iMac G5 2 Ghz last June and mentioned having no problem with the dreaded fan noises of said iMac. fast forward to last week when we got together to do some nerdy stuff in front of same iMac when he casually mentions to me. "my fans have been going crazy lately" ... not that his iMac sounds like a jet turbine or anything, but it got me thinking about the new "Intel Inside" Macs. and with two cores inside, goodness!
so b4 i rush out and buy one of these babies -- i'm going to wait and see regarding the fans. but it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
    CMM.
PS.. i am a bit amazed (and elated!) that the Intel Inside Macs have already become a reality -- 6 months sooner than expected. (who would have thought!)
    YAY!

    Miriam,
Maybe I was a little premature. I just went to abc.com to watch the last episode of Men in Trees and here's the results.
With ABC video running (maybe quarter screen size), the CPU was running at a steady 65-70%, CPU temp 69.8, CPU fan 4791-4814 steady (very loud).
Didn't seem to be a high bandwidth download as net was clicking at 117 Kb/sec.
Oh well...don't really consider this very good performance. The fan went down to the 2700 range on reduced, but then the video was choppy. Good thing my capacitors are leaking...Maybe I'll get a Core 2 under my 3 year Apple Care.

  • EMac high pitched noise

Hi. I have a 1GHZ eMac G4 that I got second hand several months ago. Recently, I've noticed that there is a high pitch noise that it makes when I first turn it on or wake it from sleep. This noise only lasts for a minute or so, but it is very high in pitch. I don't think it is the hard drive because I know what a failing hard drive sounds like, but I can't be sure. Could it possibly be a capacitor problem? Does anyone know of this issue and how I could get it resolved? Thanks.

  • My computer is making demonic noises

whenever i open up adobe after effects my computer makes this demonic sounding noise. here is a link to see a video i put on youtube of what im talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox9VY1rK-60 please help

Your graphics card is overheating/ defective, I would say. This is the typical behavior that any notebook/ slim PC would show - spin up the card and CPU fan while AE is probing for OpenGL, then level off. Except that in your case it never goes back again. The crackling noises would further underline my hypothesis - sounds like random static discharge from unisolated cabling or defective capacitors.

  • Electrical noise when a white background is displayed on the screen

My iMac 27 mid-2010 got the LCD and graphics card replaced recently, due to the infamous dark spots on the display and some other video problems (vertical dotted lines on the screen).
Those issues are fixed, but now I have a new problem that didn't exist before the repair:
There is an annoying high-pitched electrical noise, but only when a white background is displayed on the screen. For example: When I open a blank page in Safari, the noise comes up. If I switch to another tab with a black background web page, the noise disappears.
The noise is perfectly noticeable, and very annoying, when using the computer in a silent room. It is not related to display brightness, since it's always there no matter what brightness level I set.
The Genius in the local Apple Store was able to hear it, so it's not a problem of perception. But he could neither find the cause nor solve the issue, so he returned the computer to me, with a vague 'its a normal noise, maybe caused by the CPU or the graphics card when they have to display white backgrounds'.
Well, the thing is, this noise wasn't there before the LCD/graphics card replacement. I'm pretty sure about it, since I have been using this computer in a daily basis for the past two years and I know each and every noise that comes out of it.
I would like to ask if any of you know of this problem. I've done a lot of searching in the internet, but couldn't find anything about this noise in particular.
    Thanks,
    Miguel

    Hi, thanks for your suggestion.
Unfortunately, they have made up their mind about this issue. I even talked to the Store Manager, asking for a solution, but he pretty much ignored me saying he had full confidence in his team: if the genius says the noise is 'normal', then there's nothing more to discuss. Full stop.
They just replaced a fan, which didn't solve anything, because the noise is clearly electrical in nature, NOT mechanical. I suspect it's related to capacitor resonance in the graphics card. The display and LED backlight panel seem to be OK, since the noise is not heard when I use the mac in target display mode via the mini-displayport input.
I gave them this information in order to help with the diagnosis, but they didn't even bother to write it down.
So far, the Apple Technical service seems very un-professional to me. I'm stuck with a defective computer for which I've paid 2.000 euros + Apple Care.
Well, in this case, Apple doesn't Care at all. I can't even find an email address where I can submit a written formal complain.
    (Sorry for the rant)

  • High current causing noise on thermocouple input spoiling reading.

I have a J-type thermocouple I'm measuring using a PCI-6036E and an SCB-68. The thermocouple is attached directly to a charging/discharging capacitor - once the rms current through this cap reaches above about 80A noise on the thermocouple input causes the temperature reading I'm getting through LabVIEW to sink to below -10000 (which is obviously incorrect). Below about 80A rms it works fine and when I connect the thermocouple to a meter instead of the SCB-68 it works fine. Is there any kind of input buffer I should be using inside the SCB-68 or some kind of software compensation I can perform on the reading?
    Thanks!
    Neil

    Neil-
I'm pretty sure that your inputs aren't isolated. I'm convinced that that is the problem. I've seen this problem with Fieldpoint hardware, and was unable to use it for my project. We are reading thermocouples near 230 amp heaters. I had to use a Yokogawa Darwin unit that has 500V common-mode voltage isolation, which is different than regular isolation. Most analog input devices have a common-mode voltage limit of about 5 volts. Even though your thermocouple may be putting out millivolts, that differential is riding on top of some other voltage that is being induced by your equipment. An averaging filter may make your data look better, but it won't be correct.
If you are only looking at one t/c, you may want to get a signal cond
itioner that converts the temperature reading to a higher level analog.

  • X-Fi Elite Pro Noise issues

    Greetings,
I've had this x-Fi Elite Pro for 3 years now, and since about 6 months ago it started missbehaving like I'll describe. If the computer has been on for a long time the speaker output of the card starts making a crackling noise. Here's a phone recording of what this noise sounds like:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/002586/200227%2032502.m4a
If I change the audio mode with the creative console or change the master sampling rate there's a chance that the noise will go away, but it's a really temporary solution as it will be back within minutes. The only prolonged solution is restarting the computer and start the cycle anew.
I would like to know if anyone has heard about this issue and if there's any known solution such as changing the capacitors, if so, which ones.
To be honest, I'm quite disappointed with the experience I had with creative's soundcards lifespans. I went through two Audigy 2 cards that developed popping noises after two years of use (fortunately got those replaced with Dell's extended warranty). My replacement, if there's no fix to it, will certainly not be a creative card. It's a shame, really, as the Elite Pro is a really good card, while it works right; I'm just not willing to spend that much money on a sound card that's likely to fail within 3 years.

I have attempted to use the Master Auxiliary Balance control in audio creation mode to balance the signal during recording. Creative thinks the board may be the issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    - old cardridge/stylus being worned out,
    - weak connectors/connections,
    - too light stylus pressure (try 2-3 grams),
    - dirty/dusty stylus,
    - mispositioned stylus (not straight, wrong 'arm'length (if adjustable),
    - wrong connection imbedance,
You can also try if connecting turntable through amplifier (w/ RIAA) to X-Fi Line-In makes any difference --> shows out, if the RIAA pre in X-Fi is not working properly.
