T510 Optimus problem

After some hardware issues (see: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T510-black-screen-not-booting-anymore/m-p/4...) with my T510 I called lenovo service and a technician had to switch the motherboard.
Now I have a new problem: I can't activate Optimus, which was definitely working before. I did some search and in my BIOS there is no entry for activating Optimus. Only the driver for the NVM 3100M is working.
Is it possible, that an old motherboard without Optimus was installed? I bought my T510 3 months ago with a definitely working Optimus.
I have a 4384-GEG with BIOS 1.43
Bloodkite

They must have put the wrong board in.

  • T510 shutdown problem

I've got the following problem with a T510 and would appreciate any ideas of what could be causing it.
-Computer was working fine, and then the speakers sounded kind of like they were blown...you could recognize the sounds coming out of them, but they sounded really messed up. Sound with headphones was perfect.
-Next day the computer wouldn't boot, and battery light would not show that the battery was charging when charger was plugged in
-I did some research and found the trick with the power button 10 times and then holding it to discharge static buildup. This ended up working and computer worked fine other than still having the speaker issue.
-After several hours, the computer turns off and will not turn back on without doing the power button discharge trick. It has done this a few times now.
    - I did a factory restore with the Lenovo disks, and the problem still exists. I also removed the battery and just ran it on a charger and the problem still happens. Any ideas? Thanks.

There might be a short somewhere.   Probably near the speakers.  Look up a teardown for your model and take the thing apart.  See if you can find anything pinched/severed or some piece of metal that might be bridging a connection.  If you can't find anything, you might be lucky enough where simply pulling it apart and putting it back together carefully fixes it.
    Good Luck.

  • T510 noise problem

It was super quiet before running 2k10, I knew that this game gave the professor a lot pressure, but the result Thinkpad could not be quiet again, although the noise was not loud. I tried several methods to figure out what was problem such as speedfan, but this software could not work well in my t510. This laptop's performance was very well as my expectation except the noisy problem. By the way, I mean it is noisy without running big games. Could someone give some advices? Someone said that it was not lenovo fault, it was because of the new intel processor. But I thought if the laptop kept noisy like this, it would be a common laptop, not Thinkpad
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Have not used it myself, but some people have had good results using TPFanControl.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=461966
Please let me know if TPFanControl works for you. I have read of people using it on T410 and W510 Thinkpads but not T510 yet. Would be curious to know if it works.

  • T510 Battery Problems

    Hi everyone,
I have a relatively new T510 (bought in April 2010) and I'm having serious issues with battery capacity. I've had the computer for less than five months, but according to the ThinkVantage tools my battery is already down to 63% of its original capacity. Now, I take good care of this thing--I generally use the "maximum battery life" settings and rarely keep it plugged in when the battery is fully charged (I have the power manager set to keep it from overcharging anyway.)
Last night I found out there was a battery firmware update that supposedly addressed the issue I've described--I breathed a sigh of relief, installed it, and reset my battery gauge...only to discover that I'm still at 63% capacity. Do I have a faulty battery? Will Lenovo cover a new one under warranty? Is there anything else I can do to fix this? Any help is much appreciated.

Well... nobody from support responded... how weird....
Laptop was sent back to warranty. I had to call so many times to their phone numbers in germany (15 euro-cents per minute, and just getting to the operator takes you like 5 mins) but I finally got to send it.
After a 5 day work, they changed the motherboard cause it was defective.
If the same happens to someone else, don't think it twice...
The warranty guys acted cool. But they will never answer your emails (they will tell you to call the fee phone without even reading what is inside), and you will have to pay like 2 euros for every phone call.
I hope customer service gets better... at least the guys doing the repair didn't hesitate to change the faulty mother board.

Perhaps notifying NVidia? post in their forums. They are not very responsive, but maybe with this windows 10 launch they will more interested in compatibility issues.

Thanks for tips for disabling auto-drivers updating.
Yes, I tried compatibility modes, etc. I even compiled an extrenal .dll with:

  • Need Svet's Help! MSI GT70 492-US

I recently sent my laptop into a repair center (Non msi to my mistake) where the person replaced the motherboard with a new one. Upon replacing the motherboard the repairman also wanted me to pay for a new keyboard, stating that the keyboard was acting erratically, and is need of a repair. However, I'm starting to think it has something to do with software issues pertaining to the bios. Every key is functional, but is mapped to do something else. The letter h, for example types out the letter b. I see there's another thread extremely similar to the problem I am facing and the person found a solution, however he was not coherent in explaining the solution and was one of those people who fixes the problem without gratitude nor informational sharing. Therefore, I am pleading to the experts on here to please help me with this issue as it is extremely annoying.
Also, another generic optimus problem. With every single game I play, the white optimus light is on the power button, and FPS does not seem to correlate with the machine's expected performance. I did do quite a bit of research before typing this out but no BIOS tweaks or anything of that sort. I set the default GPU to the 675mx, ran it using the 675mx, I'm monitoring the gpu activity, everything, yet it still lacks that hmmpph and framerate drops occur in games as old as SPORE.
Please note that I am very willing to donate for a private bios or EC or ANYTHING that will be the god-like solution to the many problems I am facing now, and faced before the "repair of this laptop". So from anything like being able to overclock the monitor above the 60hz intel-forced limit, to overclocking the CPU; I am willing to pay.
    Thanks in advance!

you can create a bootable USB key by following this guide:
    http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm
once done extract all files that i give you and copy them to the USB stick
then reboot notebook and press F11 and then select the USB key to boot from
when you see A:\ or C:\, type:
    ecall.bat [ENTER]
Alrighty, these instructions seem easy enough. It seems to be taking quite a while to format the usb disk, so in this time, I'd like to get straight to the money stuff. How easy is it to use your legendary software edits? I am definitely not as tech-savvy as most people on here so I really don't want to screw up my system, yet I am very much willing to gamble to improve the performance of my pc. Will we speak on a 1-on-1 basis to tweak my pc? I'm completely new to this, sorry for all the questions.

  • T510. Optimus technology support in Win XP

    Hello,
Have Lenovo T510 4349-PG9 with optimus technology.
Need to use WinXP SP3 instead of Win7.
I have installed WinXP SP3 with all updates, but can't install NVS 3100M driver. After i switch video card to NVS3100M in BIOS instead of optimus option, i have success. After i switched option back to optimus and after restert...
The same problem as in this topic: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T500-Hybrid-Graphics-Problem-How-to-blindly...
Laptop is new so i will obtain new one from my provider. Seems that motherboard is broken or something.
So the question in advance is: Does WinXP SP3 support optimus technology or i need to choose Inter or Nvidia video in Bios and use it? And if WinXP supports optimus technology how to install drivers in a proper way?
    Thanks in advance!

XP does not support Optimus. You'll have to choose between Intel and nVidia in the BIOS.

  • Poor performance when multitasking on T510, Core i5, Windows 7 64, 4GB RAM, NVidia Optimus 512MB

I'm saddly disappointed with my new Lenovo performance and don't know what might be the cause.
I just got a new T510 with Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and Windows 7 64. When I run a couple of programs, like Photoshop, a Virtualbox (850 MB of RAM allocated), Google Chrome with a couple of tabs I get stuck.
It seems that 4GB of memory is not enough for the work I did on a 2GB machine a week ago.
The computer's response time is a couple of seconds for window switching. New programs start counting in minutes. RAM consumption reaches 98%, even though no single program is listed to consume more than a 150MB in either Task Manager or Resource monitor. Aero effects work cool, though, there's no sloppiness in the graphical layer of the system.
Even now, after having Virtualbox killed, remaining processes take up 89% of RAM memory in Resource manager.
I'm working on AC power supply with "Perfomance" power setting, but I can hardly call it a performance.
This is ridiculous, it was supposed to be a fast multitasking machine and it turns out to be a load of junk. I used to work on 2GB, 1.6GHz Celeron with Intel GMA processor, had Ubuntu host and Windows XP guest with 750MB RAM allocated plus a couple of programming tools running and never had such issues _on regular basis_.
I'm considering running a Ubuntu on this machine because I simply can't work this way on Windows 7... I can't even kill a process easily because it takes ages to End a process.
A friend of mine is running similar setup on a T410 machine with slower CPU and poorer graphics and he says this is really strange, because he never had such problems. My PC is new, 4 days since arrival, his is like 2-months old.
Has anyone experienced similar problem? What might be the cause?
At this point I have Chrome with ~10 tabs, empty Firefox, empty Photoshop, Pidgin, and 3 explorer windows running, Adobe Reader with 1 document and Sticky Notes. RAM consumption is 3495MB in use (yeah right), 276MB standby and 113 free.
    What's wrong here?!
    Please see the screenshot attached:

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, the issue is solved. After removing bundled Norton Internet Security suite it runs like gold-plated.
I'll get another anti-virus software, then.
Now, even with the Virtualbox running, I still have like 2GB free RAM. And no lags, no slow-downs. Woohoo.
    **bleep** you Norton!

  • T510 4384-DS9 Optimus Enabled?

    Hello all,
Sorry I must miss the statutory introduction, I have searched for an answer in the Lenovo technical documents and I want to be proven wrong...
I was originally under the impression that my laptop (Thinkpad T510 4384-DS9) had NVIDIA Optimus display technology, however, I cannot find any OPTIMUS options in the BIOS under display (or any other section for that matter).
The reason I would like to know is that I have recently purchased a docking station (model: 4338) and 3 external monitors which I would like to use simultaneously.
Forgetting the fact that I'm using Linux, and that for most people this wouldn’t be a challenge worth undertaking, I would just like to know if my system actually supports 3 external monitors and the laptop screen concurrently using the docking station.
If there is anyone on here who could clarify the situation for me that would be most appreciated!
    Thank you
    PS.

It's a common misconception. Having an Nvidia card doesn't mean you have Optimus
From top of my mind T510 came with these graphics options
    Intel only
    Nvidia 3100M only
Switchable Graphics [Intel + Nvidia] (IIRC you need to manually switch the graphis card using the Power Management, as in the T/W500 series)
Optimus [Intel + Nvidia] Software would pick which one to use, additionally you could switch in BIOS between Optimus, Nvidia or Intel
According to your MTM you have option 2

  • T510 with nVidia 3100M Optimus - not switching

Just received the above mentioned PC and I was trying to test out the switching capability of the Optimus technology.  However, I can't seem to get it to switch.  I have a game inside Steam and through the nVidia control panel I have set Steam to work with the discrete cart, but it never switches.  This is evident because I've started up a game with Optimus enabled versus entering the BIOS and explicitly choosing the discrete card and it makes a world of difference.
Is there another application I could use to test out the switching capability (I read a previous message about Steam possibly not working).  Or is there any way to explicitly switch the cards within the OS?  I am looking for a way to verify this technology works.

That would be beautiful, except that it wasn't switching automatically in certain cases.  In particular, Steam was having an issue.
I made some headway though.  Basically, I updated the drivers for the nVidia chip by going to this page:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_drivers.html
And having them scan my system.  You have to allow them to use an ActiveX control (hint: use 32-bit IE for this).  This resulted in two options, one for the 3100M and one for the Intel chip.  I chose the 3100M download (version 2.67 from 3/24/2011) and installed it.
The first thing I noticed is the nVidia control panel had a lot more configured apps.  Also, on the preview pane, I actually saw the spinning nVidia 3D logo whereas before it wasn't showing up in Optimus mode.  I was able to see the switching happen via this utility:
    http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/26992-optimus-test-tools-finally-in-users-hands/
I was a little worried downloading at first, but it seemed to work fine.  Anyway, you can play around with various applications and watch the switch happen.
Unfortunately, my game through Steam still crashed out, but it got a lot further after the driver update.  I've seen a lot of other people have problems with this particular game (Civ 5) using optimus, so I'll just chalk it up to the game for now.  It plays fine if I explicitly set the discrete chip in the BIOS which I can live with.
My next step will be to test other games to make sure it truly is game specific.  Hope this helps people having the same problem.

  • HP T510 Citrix session disconnect problem

Hello, I had problem with HP T510 (Thinpro Image 5.2/citrix receiver 13.1, Xenapp 6.5 on serveur 2008 R2). After direct ICA connexion on published desktop, the connexion drop and the user came back to the Thinpro OS. The problem seems to be with Lotus Notes 6.5 when they click on “New memo” or “Address” but not every time. After lost connexion the user must enter the password on Thinpro ICA connexion to retrieve is Windows session (session just lock not logout). Nothing special on server log. I think the ICA session send signal to terminal to disconnect. Thanks you Eric

We are having the exact same issue with our T510s, also on ThinPro 5.2, latest image. However, we do not use Lotus Notes, and there are no "crashes" happening, they simply lose connection and get their sessions back when they re-login. We have a T520 running W7ES, and some T5740s running WES9 with no problems. It is only these T510s on ThinPro 5.2.  Are yours using wireless by the way? All of ours that have the issue are wireless. We have a few T510s that are on a wired connection that I haven't seen the problem on, but I will need to verify with the users. Between this and the application icons being blank I posted about here, I am a bit less than impressed with ThinPro 5.2...
