T510 vs. W510

I am looking to buy either the T510 or W510. Priced both and surprisingly they are very close in pricing. I like the larger memory on the graphics card on the W510. I watch old TV shows on the laptop. The SDRAM is a little slower on the W510. Processor is faster.

The information I need is size & weight comparison. I don't want a hefty machine. The pictures I saw of the T510 and W510 makes me think that the W510 is heftier. I hadn't seen any of these machines in person. I am replacing an old T43p which just died. Can someone help me with size & weight comparison between the two machines? I will use this machine primarly at home.

@ColonelONeill: Something I really wonder is what is the point in offering PC3-10600 optional RAM upgrades for the W510 (and charging the customers more for it, since it makes them think they're paying for higher RAM speeds), if intel’s QM57 chipset can’t support any higher memory speeds than the 1066MHz found on the PC3-8500 types? Don’t tell me the max memory bandwidth is driven by the processor (ix-xxxM or ix-xxxQM) type! Cause then I could pop a PC3-10600 RAM type in a T410 and expect it to run at 1333MHz (given if I have upgraded the processor to the QM series already)!?
@pcot: The main practical difference between the models you mention to my opinion are 3;
The battery lifetime difference. With the W510 9 cell battery you are looking at 4 to 5 hours max where some reviews point even more towards 3 hours if only browsing. It is mainly due to the power hungry QM processor (max 45 watts) and FX880 graphics processor! While the T510 can run much longer with the same 9 cell battery due to lower processor power draw (max 35 watts) and intelligent energy efficient OPTIMUS feature (only specific models) switching from discrete to integrated GPU depending on what you doing.
The option of upgrading the W510 up to 16GB RAM, while T510 can go 8GB RAM max.
The USB 3.0 port on the W510 where the T510 (while containing the same intel QM57 chipset) unfortunately for no logical reason doesn't offer that.

  • W510 Cloning woes -- Ghost Solution Suite 2.5, Windows 7 x64

I am having some maddening issues deploying Ghost disk images to a new w510 I picked up. We have several T510 and W510 systems in our inventory that I've successfully taken from and deployed to images of XP 32-bit. I have a Windows 7 x64 image that was taken off of a W510 4319-2NU. That model type was unavailable for the most recent purchase so I ordered a W510 431964U, which is pretty much the same except the amount of RAM.
I never get an error when creating an image. I'm taking a full disk image so I'd imagine all partitions are being picked up.
Every single time I attempt to deploy the 7 x64 image to this machine I get a CRC error from Ghost. I've tried all levels of compression in taking the image, including none, and the problem persists. To be sure I've tried different NIC drivers I've tried the Ghost universal UNDI DOS-based boot disk, the Linux-based boot disk, and the WinPE based boot disk and all fail at some point.  I have the SATA mode in the W510's bios set to Compatibility mode. I've tried different ghostcast servers with the images stored on different drives or servers.
Next week I intend to try a disk-to-disk clone via a eSATA hard drive dock. I tried direct cloning to a USB-attached spare drive but it (Ghost) could never find the external drive.
I'm beginning to wonder if there's a RAM or other problem with the brand new W510, yet in my testing I *was* able to deploy an XP 32-bit image to it. So now I'm questioning whether or not the problem is starting at the time that I create the image (since that succesful XP image was created on a different system). But as I reported above, when I take 7 x64 images from this machine ghost reports no errors.
Any thoughts? Am I missing something simple but obvious?

Camarones, I'll throw out several ideas, and perhaps some will be helpful.
First, presumably you ran Ghost's verify function on the Win7 64 image that you created.
One problem you're going to run into is that the size of the sleep file used to store the memory contents when you put the machine to sleep will be wrong. However, this should be similar to what you'd run into when you upgrade RAM.
Another problem is that Windows Vista and Windows 7 use a different anti-piracy mechanism than XP. Apparently, Vista & 7 compute some kind of key during installation, which is based on the hardware configuration of the machine. That key is likely then stored in the master boot record. So if you change various undocumented aspects of the hardware, the OS install will no longer be valid. As far as I know, Ghost does not know how to deal with that. You should be able to repair that problem using an authentic Win7 installation disc from Microsoft, except Lenovo doesn't provide this.
Also, you need a newer version of Ghost than you did with XP. I'm not familiar with the current state of Ghost. Make sure that whatever version you're currently using explicitly supports Win7. Acronis True Image is another option, and probably costs less than the time you've spent so far trying to get Ghost to work.
Also, the BIOS of the W510 contains a certificate that authenticates the copy of Windows that shipped on the machine. And this certificate varies from one production unit from the assembly line to the next unit. We know this, because Lenovo accidentally released a W510 BIOS update last year that corrupted that certificate, causing Windows to become unauthorized. The only solutions were to a) live with having to beg Microsoft for reauthorization each time you did things like change the hardware or update the BIOS, b) replace the motherboard, or c) install a new full retail copy of Windows.
Also, because you're transfering a full disk image, the file contains each byte of data of each sector of the hard drive, whether a file was stored in that byte or not. Ghost is expecting to install that image onto precisely the same hard drive. That's often going to be a problem if you try to install it on a non-identical hard drive, due to different drive geometry, etc. Also, that Ghost image will include the drive's master boot record, which may or may not be correct for the new machine. You might have better luck using an image of just the occupied portions of the hard drive (which probably won't include the swap file or the sleep file).
Finally, it may be that trying to clone a pre-installed copy of Windows 7 from one machine to another will be problematic since, like I said, Win7 has a different anti-piracy scheme than XP. Plus a pre-installed copy of Win7 may not be designed to be clonable to a new machine, for some of the above reasons. Of course, you need to pay for authorized copies of Windows 7 for the machines you're running it on. You might have better luck with a copy from Microsoft that's designed to be deployed to multiple machines.
So the problem you're seeing right now with the CRC error from Ghost may be related to one or more of the above. It may also be only the beginning of your problems.
You could also try just swapping the hard drive from one machine to the other, and see what happens (back it up first, of course). This should give you a quick idea of all the problems you're likely to run into.
    Good luck!

  • Keyboard going nuts

I posted a topic about a water spill issue a few weeks ago, and I'm telling you that this laptop gives me anxiety and depression...The keyboard must be damaged, here are some symptoms :
    - when i press some numbers, i hear a beeping sound, same beep when you press too many buttons at a time
    - then the keyboard goes crazy and starts typing on its own like : zero nine one one one one one one one one etc.... and doesnt stop. the browser goes full screen and it opens inspect element
-after i make it stop numbers except five and six dont work.
    - i also noticed that after the water spill the power button didnt have lights but the light came back on and the problem started
I really apreciate your help, and I hope i can fix this without having to replace the keyboard because without the numbers, u cant play video games or type some pretty important things

It will depend on the availability and shipping cost to your place and how flexible you are with the keyboard layout (if you look for a seldom layout expect to pay more).
Check for Ebay and alikes for any T410/T420/T510/T520/W510/W520 keyboard.

  • Disabling "CPU Power Management" through BIOS -- any bad consequences?

Ok, so my new T440S is emitting a most annoying high-pitched noise. After doing some research, I come to the conclusion that it is the so called CPU Whine.
According to the diagnostics provided on this page:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T510-T410-W510-ThinkPad-high-pitched-whine/...
Disabling CPU Power Management may silence the noise - as a diagnotic measure, not a solution (as the post asks the user to contact Lenovo support for assistance).
So I tried that and indeed it silences the annoying whine. I have already contacted Lenovo and they said they will get back to me after Christmas. Meanwhille, I am still using this computer, and I am keeping the setting for CPU Power Management Disabled, until Lenovo solves the noise problem.
I was wondering if this (keeping the CPU Power Management disabled) may have some bad consequences - like melting some parts down or something. Would anyone know?
    Thanks!

    Hi yinslaptop!
I have good news. I have the same problem. My T440s is completely quiet at 43 °C CPU so I don't need any fans to spin. However there is a slight buzz coming out of the middle of the laptop. And it isn't coming from the speakers nor the fan. I didn't bother to open it up yet and check what is causing that noise, but I guess it's related to some coil whine or voltage leakage. As in your case, when I turn off the CPU Power Management option in the BIOS, the sound dissapears completely.
HOWEVER I conicidentally put one SD Card Adapter into the Card Slot and the sound completely dissapeared. I would say give it a try. Sadly the sound comes back in 20 seconds at my machine, but I am using a Sd card adapter with no card in there. Maybe this will change when I put one in. Have to test, because I don't have one lying around.
Lenovo has done a great job. You could to better at this price range, especially when the pc market is shrinking .. it's survival of the fittest. You will see what I mean when you won't get foothold in US and Europe anymore and only will supply Asia.
You won't probably answer this thread and when you do "awww yes, we are deeply sorry, some level buzz is completely normal" CTRL+V bull**bleep**.
Don't get me wrong. I really like the new T440s as my first ThinkPad, but my high order of quality wasn't meet. However I still bought it, because I needed one laptop with really good battery life, good screen and small footprint. Well sorry for the rant.

  • W520 Power Adaptor

My computer was charging fine until I got a “Consider replacing your battery immediately” notification when the battery was at 8%. My laptop died around 12 minutes after this.
As a result of the message, I purchased a new battery – a non Lenovo battery (specifications below) that the reviews indicated would work well with my system.
    The battery's specifications are:
    Item description:
    9 Cell Battery For LENOVO ThinkPad T420 T510 T520 W510 W520 57Y4185 57Y4186
    Item number:
    281015208672
The battery arrived today and seems to work well, in that the machine turns on and is shown to be in a 'good' condition in power settings. However, when I connect the a/c adaptor nothing happens. In fact, there's no indication it's plugged in at all – no beep, no charging sign, no orange charging light at the back and no charging icon on screen. In power settings, even when the a/c adaptar is plugged in, the battery is said to be discharging.
I reinstalled Lenovo's Power Manager and there has been no improvement.
Thank you in advance for any advice / insight!

I don't, but I'll see if I can find one in an electrical store! Thank you for your help!

  • T410S and Linux Mint 17

    Hello,
for the past few months, I have been struggling with my T410S improperly loading my touchpad and onboard keyboard, attached is my thread on Linux Mint Forums:
    http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=173213&sid=978fb94f69bd40e470fb328e1cc35bdc
For a brief period of time I tried Ubuntu14.04.1 LTS, the driver issues most definitely disappeared but I really dislike the Ubuntu distro so I made a jump back to Linux Mint. The problem with my keyboard and touchpad persists.
I have been looking into understand if possible, to implement the drivers from Ubuntu onto my Mint OS.
So far I haven't been successful at all. I know how to fix the mouse problem after boot but it's a checkmate when my computer boots without the keyboard.
I have tried different kernel versions, apparently identical kernel did not solve my problems either.
I have spoken to a Masters student in Comp-sci and he recommended getting IBM/Lenovo module and modify the kernel which I am very inexperienced in.
Any help would be much appreciated at this point.
    Thank you for your time

I tested Linut Mint 17 out of my live USB drive when I got my T510 and W510 (similar generation as yours) and it worked perfectly.  The T510 was later running Debian for weeks without any keyboard/mouse/touchpad/trackpoint issue.
What happens if you try any other Linux distro out of a USB or DVD? Does it work? I'm trying to rule out a hardware defect

  • Finding specs

Is it possible to find detailed specification information and accessory compatibility for particular ThinkPad models? I never had much trouble finding information for older models on the IBM website, but I find this new website is a confused nightmare which doesn't seem to have the information available at all. I've got a T510 4314-2PU. "Quick Path" gets me to the support page with a spec of i5-540M(2.53GHz), 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HD, 15.6in 1600x900 LCD, 512MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS3100m, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn, WWAN option, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, FPR, Camera, 9c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 32 Does anyone know how to get anything more detailed than that? The "Detailed Specifications" page lists the specifications for all T510 and W510 models together, which seems singularly pointless - what use is it to anyone to list the range of different options which are present in a substantial set of different models, with no indication of which are in which models? What I'd like to understand is what types of external screens can be connected, by what mechanisms, and what screen resolutions are available on them - not just maximums, but the available sets with maximum refresh rates. Does anyone know how to discover this? I'd also like to know what "docking station" options are available for this model, and why I would want one of them rather than another - the differences between different types of docking stations, port replicators, and so on. Thanks for any information to help reduce my frustration level ... Many Thanks, jjf

  • Which thinkpads have ips screen options?

I heard that some t510 and w510 laptops have ips screens.  Is this true?   If so, what thinkpads have this display tech?

nope this is not true, they all use TN. If you want anything close to the IPS technology then you would have to get the Thinkpad tablet.

  • Information: Update BIOS and Battery Firmware to ensure full charge capacity

Is your system’s BIOS and battery firmware updated to the latest level?
If not, you may not be getting the maximum capacity and run time from your battery!
Lenovo’s engineering team released updated BIOS and battery firmware in July that is applicable to customers who have ThinkPad models:
    X100e, L410/L510, L412/L512, SL410/SL510, T410/T410i, T510,T510i, W510 or ThinkPad Edge, 13, 14, or 15 inch units.
Customers who use Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox would have received a notification and opportunity to apply this update, and Lenovo’s ThinkVantage System Update tool would also identify and apply these updates.
If you aren’t using either of these tools, and have one of the systems above, please follow this link to our support site.  You can learn more there, and download and install the updates specific to your system.
Probably also worth mentioning, is an earlier tip applicable to X200t and X201t tablet users who have 8 cell extended batteries.  This technical tip and related BIOS updates ensure these batteries properly charge to their full capacities, and resolves a particular symptom where the battery would stop charging at less than 50%.
Source Lenovo Blogs: Update BIOS and Battery Firmware to ensure full charge capacity
    Recommendation before updating bios:
    - detach all devices from you system
    - undock your system, if docked
    - start from a cold boot. (shutting down the system completely, wait 15 min, start up again)
    - if possible, upgrade with a cd-rom drive

  • T510 Windows XP 64bit - Multi Card reader no longer working

Just installed XP 64 bit from XP 32 because i finally got tired of windows only recognizing 2GB of RAM.
I have just discovered the multi card reader no longer works (it worked just a few days ago with the 32 bit xp).
i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver (6hss03ww.exe - Ricoh Multi Card Reader Driver) several times, with no luck.
i do not have any uninstalled drivers, or highlighted items in the device manager.
Has anyone else ever has this issue, or can offer some advice? i am a bit at a loss... and ready to dump this thing out the window and buy a mac...

    Hello mate,
Lenovo doesn't support windows xp 64-bit. If you have a look in the readme file it says
Added support for Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (on ThinkPad
    W510 only).
Install windows vista or 7 if you want a 64-bit OS.

On my T510, I burned the disk and shut off the computer. Then I booted from the disk and it entered setup. When you get there DO NOT CLICK "Upgrade: Install Windows...". REPEAT: DO NOT CLICK
Instaed, click "Custom: Install windows only". Then it will give you a list of partitions to install to. Click your partition, click format, and click install or next or whatever. The computer is almost flawless without any lenovo drivers.
I timed the install, and it took almost 13 minutes to get from entering the serial to the initial setup (where you pick your email and stuff) and after completing that in a reasonable amount of time the computer was at the start screen (usable) by 18 minutes. This is was on a 7200rpm hdd so it should go much faster for you.

  • Sticky arrow keys on T510 all of a sudden?

    Hi
Out of nowhere my Arrow keys and the two keys next to the up arrow have become very sticky.  By this, I mean they dont press as smoothly and freely as they did, and they take much longer to return to completely unpressed.  They feel spongy!  they do work, but feel horrible.
I recently took out the keyboard to get to the wifi card, this is the only time I can think of anything happening.  But I have taken out the keyboard and checked again its all in the right place.  I blew some compressed air under the keys, which seemed to do the job for about 5 minutes.
very odd, and my return key had a similar thing ealrier.

  • Is it possible to order a t520 keyboard for a thinkpad t510 laptop

    hi all,
i am just wondering if that is possible because i think it must be something with the design of the t510 since my friend has a t420 and his keyboard feels great. unfortunately this t510 (and for the record i had 3 keyboard replacements) and each of the keyboard felt good initially but after some usage, the keys themeslves felt more resistant to press down. Either I am crazy but i feel that my keyboard goes through phases...where before at first the keys are extremely hard to depress and after a while the keys get really easy to depress and after while of typing on that keyboard it slowly the keys starts to get harder to depress down. It is really hard to believe but it is true. Might be a defect in the t510 keyboard or i am just so unlucky to get the same problem 3 times in a row with these replacement keyboards. lol
    thanks

    The keyboard on T510, T520, X220, T410, T420, T410s, T420s, T400s, W510, W520 are all intercompatible. So the answer to your question is yes.
Just look for the Part number of the keyboard under the keyboard.
What you describe is possible, as initially the various plastic mechanism has not worn in, once it is worn in to the optimal point, the key will feel easier to type on. But as you use it more, the key mechanism will eventually wear out and create the difficulties you explain.
Just like car engine, there is a wear in period for the engine parts after which the car engine will feel smoother and eventually it will wear out.
P.S. But what you describe will only be noticeable for people whom constantly type on their keyboard at a very fast rate.

  • T510 missing options for display resolution

I am looking to order a T510.  Lenovo site does not show options for display resolutions any more. I need WUXGA, how do I verify this before placing an order?

    Hi vijpersonal,
There is no T510 with WUXGA. WUXGA is 1920x1200, but the new Thinkpads got FHD which is 1920x1080. As far as i understand it's hard to get a T510 with FHD at the moment. Seems like Lenovo have some delivery problems for models with the FHD panel. If you search for FHD in this forum you can find a lot of discussions about that topic. I'm sure the FHD will be available soon, but don't know when that might happen. You can also get the W510 with the FHD panel and those should be possible to buy now.
You can find the Thinkpad Notebooks pdf using this link: http://www.lenovo.com/psref/
Then you can find detailed spec for a lot of Thinkpads. I don't think you will find any T510 with FHD at the moment though.
Also i'm not sure where you are looking since i just checked shop.lenovo.com and for each of the models the resolution are specified.
