  • No driver matches ThinkPad T520, alwyas BSoD, consider hardware issue

    Hi,
My laptop is Lenovo ThinkPad T520 4242-4UU
    Hardware configuration is:
    Core i7 2620M / 2.7 GHz - vPro
    RAM 4 GB
    HDD 500 GB
    NVS 4200M / HD Graphics 3000
    OS Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate
I've got this laptop on July, 2011. At first, it works perfect. But since 2012, the bluescreen problem, as attached, has happened frequently and really annoy me a lot.
I've reinstaled the Windows 7, and tried different driver, but none of them solve the problem throughly.
    The driver I've tried are:
    - NVIDIA Official
    - Verde 296.10 Driver WHQL
    - Verde 295.73 Driver WHQL
    - Verde 295.51 Driver BETA
    - Verde 290.53 Driver BETA
    - Lenovo Official
    - NVIDIA Optimus Display
    - 8.17.12.7593 (NVIDIA Graphics Driver)
    - 1.2.23.3 (NVIDIA HD Audio Driver)
    - 8.15.10.2538 (Intel Graphics Driver)
    - Details of this driver is here: http://download.leno...es/83de42ww.txt
Normally, bluescreen will happen when I drag a picture into Photoshop CS5, or open some PDF files with Adobe Reader 10.1.2. It happened so sudden, that I have not got a chance to see the picture be opened in Photoshop, or the PDF be displayed in Adobe, bluescreen befell. These are two major software came across bluescreen. However, when I reboot the laptop, and reopen the same picture, or reopen the same PDF, it won't cause bluescreen anymore. (But the Photoshop will prompt that the driver of GPU is crashed and has automatically turn off my GPU acceleration) It just like a random bluescreen by the god.
Other software, like Internet Explore 8.0, Firefox 10.0, QQ 2012, or came across bluescreen once or two, but not often.
It's so weird that I cannot figure it out why and how to solve.
Is there any friends have the same problem. Or any ideas to solve it?
Many thanks and wish everyone has a great weekend.

  • T520 - how to change my SSD HD?

I have the T520 with 128GB SSD drive. It has worked very well for me until now but since about 2 weeks ago, HD started to freeze on me, about once a day. Basically the whole Windows 7 freezes and eventually the bluescreen - reporting that HD is undetectable. If I reboot, it works again until the next freeze.
So I'm considering changing the HD to a larger capacity (and hopefully a faster SSD drive). How would I go about doing this? I did manage to create a series of boot disks - is that all I need or do I also somehow need to create that recovery partition? Is there any place where I can find the steps to follow?
Your help would be much appreciated.

About a month ago, this setup completely stopped working - did not boot under normal mode anymore.
Fortunately, It did boot under "safe" mode, so I was able to boot in that mode, and backed up the content. Then, I made the recovery DVDs and proceeded with a clean factory reset. I did run the Diagnostic tool which is also supposed to fix any bad sectors. Not sure if it has found anything as I left it running without my presence.
It was ok for couple of weeks and then all of a sudden I started to see a different issue. Now, when I have many windows open (more than 50 tabs in one window), occassionally, he freezes, completely. Everything, including the mouse. If I leave it, then within a minute, it goes blue screen of death, then goes back into Lenovo boot but hangs there. I need to turn it off and back on manually with the power on/off button. I did member however in few occassions that I also had that DOS screen with a message saying "HD cannot be detected" or something similar.
These days, I encounter this about 2-3 times per day. I don't think I enountered this issue when I use the latop with only few winddows open. Do you think I am right to suspect that this is a SSD issue? I don't think it's a memory issue as it always takes time between a complete freeze and the blue screen. I'm suspecting that this time, Windows 7 managed to allocate some swap space in a bad area of the SSD, and under heavy usage, it ventually accesses that area?
    Still baffled.

  • T520 poor performance and SpeedStep problem

Hi to all the users in the forum!
I'm new to this forum and I would like to thanks for any future help that you'll give me.
After some months of using my new T520 (i7 2620m) I was really disappointed for the poor performance of this ThinkPad.
Briefly I've noticed slow responses to many programs in particular in the MS office enviroment (.ppt files) as well as on my gmail interface under firefox, and in general the Win7 environment. It sounds really strange to me, I came from a 5 years old Intel®-Centrino® (1.7Ghz) experience and the differences between the old and the new machine should be more sharp. So I've investigated to understand this behavior. Before that I've upgraded the system with the newest files.
To understend the behaviour I've used the following software (x64):
CPU-Z to evaluate the performance in terms of Core speed; Multiplier and Bus Speed
Prime95 to produce an heavy load
Intel processor ID Utility to produce a "certified" report.
The responses is always the same. The multiplier is stuck at 8X with a frequency of about 0.79Ghz and the gauge in the CPU performance of the Lenovo Power Manager” always indicating  29% (that is 0.79Ghz of the 2.7Ghz of the i7 2620M processor).  Nothing change if I switch on the turbo boost or if I made some variation in the performance profile. The only change that I can observe/listen is an increase rotation of the system fan and the consequent noise increase when the turbo boost is on. Even during the “torture-test”  of Prime95 no differences in frequency is observed.
The only way to obtain an higher frequency is to disable the speedstep technology from the BIOS setup, with the consequence to have the multiplier stuck to 24X with a frequency of 2.7Ghz…. but is not a solution!
The described behavior of this processor under Win7 is also observed with Ubuntu 11.04.
I’ve reported the problem to the technical support, and they ask me to run the “Lenovo Toolbox System” because is the only software that they can “trust”. So I did it and sent the log files. Now I’m waiting for a response and in the meantime I would like to discuss, report and share my experience to this forum.
Actually from my point of view, there is a serious problem with the i7 processor, that I can’t solve and a substitution is required. I’m disappointed because I’m using since some months a PC with reduced performance and because I spent my time to demonstrate this evidence. I hope to solve quickly this inconvenience and I’ll report to the forum any news from the technical support.
    Thanks
    Misuraka
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The CPU will throttle down if the battery is removed. This is intentional for various reasons.
To extend overall battery longevity, use the provided Power Manager.
    1) Launch Power Manager
    2) Click Advanced in the top right
    3) Go to the Battery tab
    4) Click Battery Maintenance
    5) Choose Custom charge threshold
    6) Start charging from 80, stop charging at 90.
This should extend battery lifespan. Avoid overcharging it, and avoid overdepleting it. Lithium ion batteries don't last long under those circumstances.
In extended storage or when you know you will be using AC almost exclusively, set the charging threshold to 30 to 40, deplete it to 40%, then leave it there.

  • Sluggish Performance & Audio Problems in Lenovo T520

I have experienced strange problems with my Lenovo T520 (specifications: i7, 6GB RAM, I can post detailed configuration). The problems are:
The audio quality is noisy. What I find strange is the audio quality for the same song worsens when play in VLC media player (more noise) v/s when played in Windows Media Player
The performance is sluggish and the system freezes when moved. What I mean is if I am watching a movie and lift the laptop from one place to another. The movie freezes while moving & audio stops. Once stable again the video and audio synch up again
Trackpad unresponsive: The trackpad get unresponsive at times, but the Trackpoint is working fine.
Could you post a solution to any of the problems?

    For the sluggishness....
    (1)  Make sure the power cord is plugged in.  I know...sounds dumb, but I had the same problem with my new T520 and I saw a thread on here stating that Lenovo thought it would be a great idea to make your new T-Series laptop run slow when on battery.
    (2)  Closely inspect the "Power Manager" profile you're using.  I noticed that even the "Maximum Performance" (or whatever it's called) profile was set to NOT best use the CPU.  In Power Manager, click "Advanced" at the top to go from "Basic mode" to "Advanced mode", then click the profile you want to use from the vertical list on the far left.  Then on the right side, expand the first drop-down category called "Performance" or something like that.  Now there will be two columns under that category...battery on the left and AC power on the right.  On the AC power column set the drop-down box to the "Maximum Turbo" setting.

  • Adobe Download Assistant not working after bluescreen

I like to get the trial for Photoshop Elements 10 but the ADA is broken:
Under Windows 7 I already used the ADA to download and install Adobe Premiere 10 successfully a week ago.
Then I tried to get Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 but my system crashed with a bluescreen. The computer is fine again but ADA is not working anymore:
    - after startup it doesn't list any (!!!) product to download. The list is just empty
    - I can enter my username and password and click login. Then the buttons are greyed out and nothing else happens. I have to kill the application with the task manager then.
    - I can apply for a new user account but it greys out and gets stuck like as the login.
    - The help buttons lead to empty Pages in the web browser.
I tried to uninstall ADA and reinstall it (two times) but the behaviour stays the same.
I tried to find direct download links (the FAQs told me that there should be some) but every download page will use the ADA. I'd be fine with a plain ftp page for the trials. :-)
I'm an IT professional but I've no idea how to get ADA working, wiped from disk to get it reinstalled or to download the trials on another way. Please help.

I will try to install at a different location this afternoon.
The other thread handles a different situation: "... the Adobe Download Assistant launches, asks me to sign in ... I get a nice "Welcome, Steve" message ... and a list of related products below with links to download their trials ... The Help link takes me to an Adobe Download Assistant FAQ page ..."
    - I cannot sign in and don't get a welcome message.
    - I don't see a list of products.
    - The help link takes me to an empty page.
BUT: where does the ADA get the list of products from? Is it online or local? If everything is online where I am blocked (sign in, list, help), I'll check the firewall. Perhaps the bluescreen crash changed something.

  • Bluescreens and Lock-ups with 2.15.0

I downloaded the latest driver version, 2.5.0006 today in an effort to try and fix an issue that was intermittently causing the card to stop working (either Vista would tell me no sound device was detected, or there inexplicably would not be any sound what-so-ever).
Since 'upgrading' to the latest version, I have experienced 2 BSoDs and 2 complete system lock-u
    ps.
Frustratingly, even the BSoDs themselves are locking up while allocating memory for the crash dump, so I can't get any useful information about what is causing it. Since the only software I've installed in the past month or so - aside from Vista updates - is this sound card driver update, and I haven't seen a BSoD since August of last year, just before nVidia managed to fix an issue with their video card drivers, I am highly suspicious that the crashes are caused by these Creative drivers.
I have contacted customer support about the issue, but while I am waiting to hear back from them, are any of you running across this issue at all My current plan is to wipe out all the drivers and software and install Daniel_k's latest distribution to try and fix this problem. Does anyone have any other suggestions
    Edit - System specs:
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.67 GHz
    EVGA nForce4 680i mobo
    4 GB RAM
BFG nVidia 8800 GTX (x2 in SLi)
    Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
While I was updating the post with my system specs, the computer BSoD'd again.
    Edit #2
And in case you were wondering, no, the driver update did not fix the original issue.
Message Edited by Emura on 04-2-2008 2:00 AM

Yeah, sounds like you're getting the same problem as me. I've been having random lockups upon reboot as well as lockups and bluescreens while using the device; listening to music, watching YouTube videos, and playing games.
Interesting to note that we don't have the same chipset, amount of RAM, video card configuration, processor, or Vista installation.
It's been about 24 hours since I e-mailed tech support about the issue. They say their average response time is 24 hours, so I'm hoping to see something tomorrow.
As for overclocking, I haven't overclocked this PC so I don't think that's the issue. I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions that have been given so far!
Update: I recieved an e-mail from tech support today, and it was exactly the canned auto-response I was expecting. I'll copy and paste parts of it here:

At this point, I'm pretty tired of dealing with this card. The store I bought it from won't take it back for an exchange or refund, and I doubt CL will RMA it, since the 'product' seems to work fine (though IMHO, defecti've drivers = defecti've product). Even if I could get an RMA through CL, they'd only end up sending me another card, which wouldn't fix the driver issues at all.
I'm going to look around and see if I can find someone interested in buying it, then put that money towards a new card from M-Audio. In the meantime, however, I'll play CLI Support's game and try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers again. Let's see where that goes.

  • T520 WiFi Issues

I recently purchased a T520, and am having some issues with the wireless connection in my home. There is one particular room (happens to be our living room) where I cannot get that machine to connect. I do not have the same issue in this location with my old ThinkPad SL500, my Motorola Xoom tablet, my wife's IdeaPad Y550, or the iPod Touches that my children have. I have made sure the software and drivers are up to date. I installed inSSIDer to see what might be coming in for traffic, and it does seem that our neighbors' networks are close- so I tried setting the router to other channels with no improvement on the T520. I have even replaced the router itself with a new one, and yet I am still running into the same issue. It just doesn't make any sense that this only happens with the one machine- I am literally typing on the SL500 and it has 5 bars, but the T520 right next to it will not connect.  I can connect the T520 in other rooms- moving 8 ft to the kitchen table and I'm on, no problem.
Any suggestions on something I can do to get it to work?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No- I can connect next to the router, or in every other room in the house, except this one room- and the problem only exists in the one machine (T520). Logistically, the problem room is upstairs from the router- if I took a tape measure, I'd probably be about 12-15 feet away if I could go through the stairway walls (which are just paneling and drywall).
The only thing I can think of is suceptibility to our neighbor's router, but don't know why it would be significantly different in this room compare to others- the kitchen is actually closer to the neighbor's house, and I can connect there- and again, I have no problem with other machines or devices in the same location.

This is from my invoice, is there a way to get system info off my notebook that I can copy/paste? (unlike Win system info)
My harddrive has been full for a while and I'm looking to get a 1 tb drive and possibly SSD  I'm also continually running out of memory as I have a gazillion browsers, tabs and apps open.
    Just looked on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-7200RPM-Mobile/dp/B0097LG9U8/
I read about adding SSD and should mention that my DVD player doesn't work anymore, so maybe I can put something else in it.   I also don't use wireless G3 etc, just regular wireless DSL.
    Greatly appreciate suggestions, thanks!

If you don't need a WWAN card I would put a mSata SSD and install the OS and programs there. Then replace your 500GB with a 1TB drive.
Another option would be to replace the HDD with a standard 2.5" SSD, remove the optical drive, replace it with a HDD caddy and put a 1TB HDD there
OR... You put the mSata SDD in the WWAN slot, replace your 500GB with a 1TB drive AND add another 1TB with the caddy instead of the optical drive
Plenty of options with a T520, it's a great ThinkPad

  • Busted sound on T520-- pop sound

Hi.  Sound has busted on T520 for a few weeks now.  I can hear sound when I plug in my earphones, but windows recognizes this as a speaker, conexant 20672.   I checked the "find and fix audio playback problems" in windows 7 to no avail.  I believe I may have to have my speakers repaired.  I am still under base warranty until sometime next year.  Any help greatly appreciated!  Happy holidays.

It has not been taken apart.  Do I have to send it in somewhere?  Here is my warranty info: "This product has a three year limited warranty and is entitled to depot repair service. Customers may call their local service center for more information. Dealers may provide carry-in repair for this product. Batteries have a one year warranty."  I believe the laptop was purchased online.  Where would I get in touch with a local service center?  I live in Canada.

  • T520 Sound Issues...Latency Spikes...SIMPLE SOLUTION !!

    Hello All,
Many of us T520 owners have had problems with skipping/cracking/distorted audio as a result of DPC Latency Spikes. I have been reading every available thread on the topic and I found a simple solution in a T420 thread  that I wanted to share with any T520 users that may have overlooked it.
The Latency Spikes experienced by many users (including myself) were caused by the Ethernet Driver (Intel 82579LM Gigabit Adapter). The current T520 is loaded with Intel driver version 11.12.38.2001. However, if you revert to version 11.12.36.0 the issue disappears. You can download the driver directly from the HP website. (It is no longer available on the Lenovo Support Page)
Thanks again to the original T420 poster and GOOD LUCK!
    Moderator Note: Links fixed.

    Just bought a NEW T520 with nVidia 4200 , i5 , 4GB, 500GB (7K2 rpm)....
Had before Y560p, & resplved problems with that by reversing the bios to an older one, I didn't found it on Lenovo web, but hte guy from Thailand sended it to me on e-mail (he had problems too).
So it was OK but I wanted the best U can buy... & bought T520.... Had a BIG problem on a gig 1st time a used it ...
Music just stopped for a second or two.... big spike in latency monitor (I started it before work)... then I put to OFF WiFi (on the switch - left side). OK for about 45 min, then AGAIN.... I have gone crazy .... bought a double priced laptop & have problems again ??!?!  Is that possible ?!?!?
BTW the drivers on my LAN card are : 11.15.16.0
Anyone know the answer for this ?   Thanks in advance, while I'm reconsidering (not glad about that cose I love the Lenovo brand) buying the Apple Mac Book Pro...

  • T520 won't detect Network card in WDS/WinPE/Ghost image disk

    Hello all,
I figured I would just post this so I could save 2 days of someone elses life.
I'm not sure how many other modes have the EFI and UEFI bios's in them but this has caused a lot of problems when trying to capture an image / image the Lenovo T520.  So for anyone else that is having these problems here is how I got around the problem.
    The Problem:
While trying to boot up off a Capture image with a CD or PXE boot for our WDS server the laptop would not detect the network card giving no IP address and listing the adapter as a hybrid.  When trying to do a ipconfig /renew it would give an error around the lines of the loopback something or other ....... the adapter could not be contacted or initated.
I instantly thought this was due to the vanila WinPE / Capture image not having the drivers for the Lenovoo T520, so I went to the website downloaded the new drivers and injected them into the WinPE disk(You will want ot use the NDIS Drivers which are included in the package for this).  Following this process it would still not detect or install the NIC.  After many hours of searching it would apear this was due to the EFI/UEFI bios options not going through the proper boot cycle when in a PE enviroment.  The solution was to mess around with the EFI/UEFI switches in the WinPE boot image during the creation proccess as listed below:
    ocdimg -m -o -u2 -udfver102 -bootdata:2#p0,e,bc:\winpe_x64\etfsboot.com#pEF,e,bc:\winpe_x64\efisys.bin c:\winpe_x64\ISO c:\winpe_x64\winpeuefi.iso
The link with more details is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947024
Eseentially once the new boot image was complied with the proper EFI / UEFI options enabled it went through the proper boot process detected the NIC and installed the drivers which I previously provided on the disk and we where off to the races imaging the new laptop.
Hopefull this will help some others who are struggling with this or any other model that has this type of bios.
    Cheers, and thanks
Please feel free to post any additional comments to help others if you found better ways to get around this
One side note the EFI/UEFI to legacy mode only does nothing for the NIC problem, I have seen some posts where they can help with the hard drive issues when imaging, however as for the nic not loading in PE enviroments this setting in the BIOS did not reslove the problem.

    Hi Rusty1234
If I did not remember wrongly, you may present or add drivers (network, hardware) under WDS / Ghost software or copy necessary drivers (e.g. your T520 network card drivers) under it's PXE / boot section.
    Happy 2012!

  • T520 sound problems

I recieved my new T520 this past Tuesday.
Whenever there is sound playing from Firefox or IE (java, youtube) as well as the Windows Media player, the sound is absolutely terrible from the built in speakers.
There is constant pops, hisses, crackles and pauses.  It is absolutely maddening.
    I have downloaded and installed:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-76999
I've tried pluging in a USB headset (plantronics audio 626 HD) and the sound doesn't change.
    Any suggestions?

Wow, ok so I used that DPC tool (thank you!)
I disabled pretty much everything one by one until:

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us
    So I have this driver:
    NVIDIA Optimus Display Driver
    ( Windows 7 64bit )
    192.38 MB
    Normal
    8.17.12.6871
    20 Jun 2011
          > Add to your Download List
And my device manager says: 8.17.12.6871 fo the driver version. As soon as enable this device in the device manager the popping, hissing, crackling, and pauses comes back full force and the DPC tracker goes back to these huge red spikes. Now what?

  • T520 with Kingston SSD and OS Win XP Sp3 - Unmountable boot device

    Hello everybody,
I have a problem with the combination of our Lenovo T520 and a Kingston SSD. The last laptop we have ordered no SSD seems to be working with the laptop. I install normally WIn Xp with SP3 the installation work very well but when I begin to install new drivers and make a restart Blue Screen with unmountable boot device. Ive tried also an Corsair SSD it results with the same effect. Do have any idea what else I can do? I've also made an bios update but that also doesn't worked very well. Do you have any other Ideas that i can try to have a better result.
    Best Regards

Same problem here, spent half the day figuring out what was causing this, now I find another victim. Here's what fixed it for me: Restart WinXP with your ext. monitor connected, login to admin acct, go to "Start" menu>Control Panels>Printers and Other Hardware>NVIDIA Control Panel. Expand the Display folder on the left side and select "Set up multiple displays", then select the "Use only one display" radio button and make sure your laptop display is entered in the "Select the display you would like to use." box. Approve the changes and now it should restart without the ext. monitor connected.
