T520 hangs with no apparent reason

Hi all,
My T520 (424049U) which is i5-2520M 4GB RAM 500GB HDD is causing me some trouble,
It has been to many times now that it just hangs: the HDD light is constantly on, not blinking, as if its scanning my whole HDD.
This cause the laptop to stuck completely - no reaction at all- even the mouse is stuck. And it happens in all kind of scenarios- like:
in the "welcome" screen just before windows is up, in the middle of internet browsing, in the middle of code writing in eclipse and even in the middle of browsing through "my computer".
I thought it might be because of the auto defrag which from some reason was on by default, so I turned it off but with no help, it wasn't the problem.
My T520 is not even a year old, and I work with it as I got it - with factory installations (OS, and everything) and I have about 100 processes working in the ideal state. I think it's a lot but every time I try do minimize that process list I'm discouraged because even reading about a process in the web doesn't make me sure if I can rid of it or not.
Do you think my ideal ~100 processes is the problem ? If not, what can cause the system to stuck so severely as I described ?
Any suggestion will be welcome,
thank you for your comments

I did what you suggested and ran the SMART, among others, HD test and luckely, the test went fine - here is the log:

  • My Early 2008 iMac freeze with no apparent reason

    I have an Early 2008 iMac (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM).
    Since installing Lion, sometimes the computer freezes without apparent reason.
    The only thing I'm sure is that this is NOT the same as the Quicktime video problem – I wasn't watching a Quicktime video, nor a Flash website when it froze. Actually, today happened while I wasnt' doing anything: the computer was on, but I was at launch.
    Anyway, what happens is really strange: the screen freeze, I can't do things like change volume, but the mouse still works – albeit without producing results on screen such as dock magnification etc. Also, while the computer was frozen a Time Machine backup occured as scheduled, and I was able to stream my computer's music to my iPhone using the Home Sharing feature.
    The clock also remain frozen (at 12:51), so I looked at the logs and this is what I found:

    At this point I restarted the computer using the power button.
    For the record, a few months ago I replaced the hard drive thinking it could be the problem – good thing I needed more space anyway because it happened twice AFTER I replaced it.
    Any help?

    Welcome to Lion, I have 10.7.4 and this has been a problem every two weeks or so since 10.7.1. Fun.

    Since today I've noticed that every time I plug my 5g 30GB iPod in, iTunes updates about 5GB of songs with no reason. I didn't touch the songs in the meantime.
    I found somebody else with the same problem in the forums, but with no solution.
    I don't use manual syncing, because I use a smart playlist to fill up my ipod and want my ratings and play count synched automatically also.
    I didn't have this problem before.
    Thank you in advance for any help, maybe it's a bug that Apple will soon fix.
    (I use the latest soft/firmware)
    Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    I have had this problem many times too. The way to fix it is to delete the bad entry from ur itunes library, (not the actual file, just the itunes entry) then sync ur ipod. This will get the bad song off of the ipod. Disconnect the ipod. Re-add the song to ur library. Then re-sync ur ipod to rewrite the song to the ipod. Sometimes files get written badly to ipod. This is the way to correct the issue.

  • JFrame "Hello World" hangs for no apparent reason...

    Not completely new to Java, I decided to pick it up again after some years away from it. To my surprise I'm not able to run the most simple examples on my Ubuntu 7.10 using Eclipse as IDE.
    Here's my jre
    auditor@mymachine:~/workspace/hello/src$ java -version
    java version "1.5.0"
    gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.2.1 (Ubuntu 4.2.1-5ubuntu5)
    and my compiler:
    auditor@mymachine:~/workspace/hello/src$ javac -version
    Eclipse Java Compiler v_774_R33x, 3.3.1, Copyright IBM Corp 2000, 2007. All rights reserved.
    My program goes as:
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    import java.awt.Dimension;
    public class hello {
        private static void initMainWindow() {
            //Create and set up the window.
            JFrame frame = new JFrame("FrameDemo");
            frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            JLabel helloLabel = new JLabel("Hello world", JLabel.CENTER);
            helloLabel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(175, 100));
            frame.getContentPane().add(helloLabel);
            //Display the window.
            frame.pack();
            frame.setVisible(true);
        public static void main(String[] args) throws
        ClassNotFoundException {
             //Opens main window
             javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                public void run() {
                     initMainWindow();
    }and it compiles fine - even no warnings. :) To my disbelief the program starts, but quite soon (2 sec's or so) it refuses to repaint after resize, and certainly won't close when I click the close icon.
    When I run it from Eclipse, though, the program doesn't seem to hang as badly as first suspected. It behaves as if I ran it from a terminal, but I can terminate the execution without error from Eclipse. So there's still some connection with the program, it seems.
    Any ideas what's going on?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply, sabre150.

    resolves the problem (in terminal), though I still can't force Eclipse to use this environment.

  • HP LaserColor 3550 : printing jobs just hang for no apparent reason

    On an iMac G5 I administer at work an HP Laser Color 3550 was recently installed by a professional from the store. It did one printing job just to please the technician and then, later, when someone else tried to print, the job just hung! I should perhaps add that it's a multi-account machine which I administer but personally don't use, apart from checking it out.
    I spent a long time deleting and re-adding the printer in Printer Setup and repairing permissions.
    I installed and reinstalled the driver and HP toolbox from the HP site and, when I realised that no extra installation was in fact required in Tiger, became worried that my having done this installation was what was causing the problem.
    I also used Printer Setup Repair to repair specific permissions. This came up with a message saying a CUPS file was missing which it couldn't repair (sorry, I didn't note the detail and I'm not on the same machine at the moment).
    I've read some of the posts here with look-alike problems and noted down the steps that Greg Sahli has recommended. But I'm wondering whether I shouldn't go directly to a Combi re-update?
    I'd be very grateful for any help!

    imac G3 600

    Mr or Ms Light,
    No, I don't think it's an OS problem. Printing on the Mac is nightmarishly complicated (under the hood), and HP installs its own system that bypasses the default FreeBSD system. This is an occasional problem with my HP 5550. HP claims to have good user support.
    I've had, regularly, the exact symptoms. I've a migraine now, so I can't remember what I do about it. But it would be typical of me to press the printer button off, then clear the queue, then turn on the printer and have it remove the paper still in it. If needed, I might restart the computer.
    As for the cause, for the last 10 minutes I've been asking my 4-year old granddaughter, but she's not in the mood to tell me. However, she often prints pictures of Elmo off the internet to color, and she captures parts of screens and prints them. This is with the USB cable disconnected; and its when I reconnect it, the exact symptoms you describe occur.
    Try the above, and I may be able to give you a definitive answer later, after my granddaughter's nap.

  • IPad 1 pre-installed applications shutting down just seconds after loading with no apparent reason

    I've been using a second-hand iPad 1 running the highest available version of iOS for around a week now, but recently, when I wanted to use a preinstalled application they would load, but just around a second later I would be at the home screen again.
    (I'm not really in the mood to explain deeper right now, I'll reply to any questions I'm asked...)

    Is it just the pre-installed apps, or most all apps.
    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • TextEdit crashes all the time with no apparent reason...

    Hi,
    I have a problem. Whenever I open a .txt file with TextEdit, make some changes and hit "Save", TextEdit crashes. Every time! I have a brand new MacBook Pro with a brand new Snow Leopard install. It happens with files in different directories, and the same files can be modified without problems in other applications, so it has definitely nothing to do with file corruption. Console does not report anything except stuff like
    ([0x0-0x22022].com.apple.TextEdit[226]) Exited: Terminated
    when I force-quit TextEdit.
    Any ideas?
    2.8 GHz unibody MBP, OS X 10.6.2

    Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
    if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
    Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test TextEdit in the new User.
    If the problems go away, the culprit is in your User's folder.
    If the problems still exist, it's a problem at the base level of your system.
    If the problem is in your User's folder, I would delete caches first and check for bad/duplicate fonts. Next trash preference files.
    If the problem existed in the new User, you need to re-install Snow Leopard. Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and install over your current install. It installs like a combo updater and can fix problems. YOu will need to update to 10.6.2. Use the 10.6.2 combo updater rather than use the Software Updater.

  • [solved] netcfg fails with no apparent reason

    So, I'm trying to set up a very simple profile with netcfg:
    CONNECTION='ethernet'
    DESCRIPTION='ok'
    INTERFACE='eth0'
    IP='dhcp'
    Here's what happens when I try to bring it up:
    DEBUG: Loading profile eth0-dhcp
    DEBUG: Configuring interface eth0
    :: eth0-dhcp up
    DEBUG: status reported to profile_up as:
    DEBUG: Loading profile eth0-dhcp
    DEBUG: Configuring interface eth0
    DEBUG: ethernet_iproute_up ifup
    > No connection
    DEBUG: profile_up connect failed
    [FAIL]
    If I just do
    sudo ifconfig eth0 up
    sudo dhcpcd eth0
    , the network works fine.
    So, what might be the root of my problems with netcfg?
    Last edited by popoffka (2012-04-03 11:46:12)

    How long does it take for the interface to come up when you do it manually?
    Looking at what looks like the relevant lines of code (30-40) it could be a timeout issue, though not necessarily. You could manually try the commands issued in the scripts at that time.
    Just thinking aloud as, if it is a bug, then any info will be useful and netcfg is/has just getting a new maintainer, I think.

  • Many RTSP connections open with no apparent reason: 127.0.0.1.554

    On a server running Mac OS Server 10.4.11 with latest security update applied I recently noticed some large bandwidth spikes with no known cause. I discovered hundreds of RTSP connections happening at the same time as the bw spike, with no activity showing in QTSS (no active connections, nothing in StreamingServer.log).
    Checked all running processes and didn't see anything unusual.
    Did some Googling, and noticed there was an exploit reported back in 2003 on QTSS. Wondering if this was ever fixed, and if this could be the problem. Or if not, what?

  • Crashing with Kernel Panics for no apparent reason - HELP!!

    Hello - new to this forum, and I hope someone can help me resolve a problem I've been recently having with my PowerMac G5.
    It all started when I installed some an additional 2GB of RAM (bought from Crucial, which is always very good and reliable) to add to my existing 2GB of Apple RAM, and soon afterwards, found the Mac crashing with the 'grey veil of death' happening quite a lot.
    I ran Memtest several times, which showed n problem with the RAM, but I removed it anyway, to see if it was that which was causing it, and the Mac still keeps crashing with either a grey veil of death, or just a total freezeup, requiring a hard-reboot.
    I have tried everything - removing all attached devices, resetting the PRAM, pressing the little reset button on the logic board, removing the battery and unplugging the Mac for a day, swapping the Apple RAM (which has always been fine) into different slots.... nothing seems to work.
    At the weekend, the Mac wouldn't even boot up, and kept turning itself off during startup after in the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning radar-wheel.
    I got it to boot up OK from an external firewire drive I have, but Disk Utility said it couldn't fix the drive and Diskwarrior also said it was irreparable.
    I did manage to get Techtool to repair it though, which took about 9 hours but it did successfully rebuild the volume structure and the Mac would then boot up fine and all seemed ok, but it still crashes randomly and for no apparent reason.
    I never did put the new RAM back into the machine so it's all as it was before all this trouble started, and I have no devices attached to the Mac anymore, except the original Apple keyboard and mouse (which I don't normally use, but my wireless one doesn't let me start up from an external drive or reset PRAM or anything...).
    I'm going mad trying to figure out what is wrong with this thing, and I have just read how to get a crash-report (although it means nothing to me), so am posting it here.. I hope that's OK....
    If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!
    Thanks
    Matt

    The line which starts "BSD process name corresponding to current thread...." says something different in most of the panic logs, so it doesn't seem to be constantly mentioning one app or anything....
    Does any of this make sense to anyone?!
    Thanks

    I am using Lightroom 5.7, 64 bit with Windows 7 Professional. For no apparent reason, I now get an error message when I export a photo, say a raw image to a JPG. However, the exported image seems to be OK. But now I notice that my LR directory of folders in Library view does not show images correctly: If there is a folder with sub-folder(s), the folder will indicate 0 images, but the sub-folders show the proper number of images. What happened and is there a fix? I tried uninstalling Lightroom and re-installing, but problem persists.
    Here is a screen shot of the error message:

    Hi,
    For no apparent reason my phone stopped working...so I did a reset and got the message 'Restore Needed'. I connected to iTunes and got this message: 'iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on your iPhone before it can be used with iTunes'.
    The problem is, I can't enter my passcode because I'm not given that option on the iPhone. All I seem to be able to do is make an emergency call.
    It's been working fine otherwise. Any suggestions?
    This is the SECOND replacement iPhone I've had this week and I'm getting a bit fed up.
    Thanks in advance for any help,

    Are you referring to the 4 digit passcode needed to enter the phone and use it's features?
    If so reboot your iPhone and enter the passcode to get it operational.  Launch Image Capture on the Mac and connect the iPhone.  Now you should be able to download the video files to wherever you want on your hard drive.

    my iMac with OS X v10.6 keeps coming back on after I put it to sleep for no apparent reason. How can I stop this from happening?

    Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller
