[T520] keyboard layout broken

Hi,
Today my keyboard started to act weird. My power button if pressed rotates the screen 3 times and the right Alt is now 'power button' (puts computer to sleep if pressed, turns it off it held for over 5 seconds, does not wake up). This behaviour is the same in Win7 (normal and safe mode), Kubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 10.04 LiveCD. AltGr remains to function as power button even before any OS is booted. Other keys seem to work fine. What I had done before it happened is installed Kubuntu and wiped keyboard with moist paper (moist, not soaking wet). This keyboard is advertised as spill resistant so few wet key should not damage it. Other theory is that Kubuntu somehow messed up something iside it if this keyboard is programmable. This keyboard already failed once few moths ago when it started to insert extra letters after some keypresses but self repaired after few hours.
In Lenovo Think Vantage Toolbox there is diagnostics tool to test keyboard. This is the output after pressing real Power Button:
 Alt Gr
Left
(Key Pressed)
Down
Right
Space
(Key Pressed)
(Key Pressed)
n
b
Not really what you might expect.
I'm lost.

huskarl,
Boot into BIOS and do a reset BIOS to default then follow steps below.
Try booting into Windows normally then plug in an external keyboard and test the keys on the external keyboard and see if it displays properly. If it displays as per external keys pressed then you might need to contact support to get the keyboard checked.
Also you can try booting into Safe Mode and see if problem persist there as well.
edit note: - added BIOS reset.

  • Keyboard layout broken in some applications

    Good evening everyone,
    I recently updated to 10.5.4 with the combo update. I used to have a custom keyboard layout (made from a AZERTY layout) with some key combinations I use in my workflow, etc. But ever since this update, some applications just skip it and use the QWERTY layout instead (eventhough the localization of Mac OS X is set to French, my mother tongue).
    The incrimined applications that I spotted so far are Fireworks CS3 and World of Warcraft.
    If I open International preferences and turn on the menu bar language switcher, US layout isn't even checked and my custom layout do is the default/current one.
    Again, I hadn't this behaviour before the update this morning.
    Has anyone any clues of what is going on? Should I tell Apple about this problem?
    Jérôme Verzier.

    Looks familiar to me. Does this help?

  • T520 Keyboard Layout

    I'm interested in purchasing the Thinkpad T520 Notebook. Before I purchase I have two questions.
    1. In some pictures I see that the T520 has a default size (large) enter/return key. In some other photos the key is much smaller, it has only the size of the Shift key. Which is it? Does it have a large enter key, or not?
    2. The Thinkpad Notebooks have the non standard FN CTRL key layout (instead of CTRL FN). I've heard that some Thinkpad Notebooks have an option in the BIOS to swap FN and CTRL. Is this the case for the T520?
    Thanks in advance!

    The German keyboard has the big enter key and yes Fn Strg is the layout order for those two keys, not Strg Fn.

  • Bulgarian keyboard layout is broken since iOS 4.1

    I just moved my iPhone 3g from 4.02 to firmware 4.1, and it works noticeably faster!
    Unfortunately there's a bug in the Bulgarian keyboard layout:
    I want to use the Standard/Typewriter layout! The Standard/Typewriter layout used to work properly in version 4.02, but is broken in 4.1.
    Under "Software Keyboard Layout", there is only Bulgarian, which should be the Standard/Typewriter layout, but it is Phonetic. I think that both layouts should be added.
    Under "Hardware Keyboard Layout", if I choose "Bulgarian", the Phonetic layout is used instead of the Standard/Typewriter. If I choose "Bulgarian - Phonetic", the phonetic layout is used [OK].

  • Ukelele generated custom keyboard layouts not working in Lion?

    I asked this question in the stackexchange site a few days ago.  Nothing I've tried has worked so far, except for creating a new account.  Because a fresh account works, it's got to be something with my preferences, right?
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/21691/ukelele-generated-custom-keyboard -layouts-not-working-in-lion
    Here's the question from above:
    I created a custom keyboard layout with Ukelele (http://scripts.sil.org/ukelele) in Snow Leopard (idea is to generate scandinavian letters with Alt-key, otherwise have a pretty much standard U.S. layout). After the upgrade, the old installed (to ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts) layout wasn't working.
    Ukelele seems to work OK in Lion, but whether I put the generated keylayout in a bundle or single file, or save it "/Library/Keyboard Layouts" or "~/Library/Keyboard Layouts" doesn't seem to matter.
    Help?
    EDIT:
    @Sergio, I cannot choose the layout in Input Sources. One keylayout file I tried:http://semeai.org/~sjl/us-scands.keylayout
    [EDIT: Removed unrelated stuff]
    UPDATE 2011/08/15:
    @Tom:
    Copied your keylayout (it naturally ended up in my Junk folder):
    midgard (01:55) >ls -l ~/Library/Keyboard\ Layouts/MongolianQWERTY.keylayout-rw-r--r--@ 1 sjl  staff  44536 Mar 13  2008 /Users/sjl/Library/Keyboard Layouts/MongolianQWERTY.keylayout
    Logged out, logged in, isn't showing in Input sources (I'm looking very closely between "Maori" and "Myanmar - QWERTY").
    I've also uninstalled bunch of software and plugins giving suspicious messages to system.log, but hasn't helped.
    UPDATE 2011/08/16:
    I created a test account, and lo, the layout works perfectly for it. Also the bug in preferences doesn't show for that account. When trying this on my own account, there are no errors in Console logs with the suggested keywords (I can't seem to locate console.log file, though).
    UPDATE 2011/08/16 later:
    Nuking Library/Caches (and relogging) didn't help.
    UPDATE 2011/08/17:
    I did
    % find Library -name "*.plist" -exec mv {} {}.renamed \;
    and restarted, but it didn't help. I restored the situation with
    % for file in `find Library -name "*.plist.renamed"`; \  do mv "$file" "${file//.renamed/}"; done
    addendum: I also went through all the .plist files with plutil -s as described inhttp://www.askdavetaylor.com/can_i_check_my_plist_files_in_mac_os_x_for_problems .html. There was some brokennes, but in very unrelated applications.

    Tom,
    I think I love you.
    That absolutely did it! Thanks so much!
    If you'll answer with the same link in the stackexchange site, I'll mark the answer as correct, so you'll get the rep there.
    Thanks,
    Sami

  • What is the correct keyboard layout?

    Hi guys I just purchased a new mac book pro from my local store and i'm confused about why my keyboard layout is different to the ones ive seen on the internet, im just wondering if you can take a look and tell me why.
    this is the keyboard layout that i see over the internet, and was adviced by support that mine should look like this;
    http://cdn.gottabemobile.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/macbook-pre-retina-keybo ard.jpg
    However my macbook pro's keyboard looks like this;
    http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/TechRadar/Computing/MacBook%2 0Pro%2013%202011/open-420-90.jpg
    Do you see how the return keys are different? can anyone tell me why this is?

    Any will work. Lenovo uses 3 suppliers to provide keyboards. I tend to look for whatever one is cheapest. BTW, T410, T420, T510, T520 and some others all use the same keyboard

  • T430 keyboard layout impression

    Today I've received first several T430 for our company, and they look generally not bad, but keyboard layout change naturally kills me. Can't even say how much I'm disappointed and irritated. For years Thinkpad keyboard layout which followed layout of big standard desktop keyboard probably most closely was one of its most loved features. First bad change was in T410 (or was it T400?) when they replaced Insert with big Delete button, so standard key combination Ctrl+Ins wouldn't work anymore if you try to hit Ins in it's usual place. And now just the end of the story - keyboard layout is like on any $500 worth Acer or Samsung.
    It is not only changed - important features have gone. No more Back/Forward buttons, which were very usable at times. But when I noticed there is NO MORE NUMPAD, I realized this notebook is simply unusable for me, as I'm working with some programs which REQUIRE Numpad buttons. Not at least without normal external keyboard; and since I'm not going to drag it with me all the time, then it is unusable. Using Numpad buttons on notebook never was comfortable, but you have to pay for mobility and space. Ok, I will use my old good T61 as long as it is still alive, and then migrate to whatever, but not T430.
    Oh yeah, and additinal thanks for hiding identification label with model and SN under the battery. Rapidly identifying booted notebook standing on a desktop just became more easy.

    The move of standard keyboard layout of some standard key started with some manufactures like Toshiba at least five years ago when I got my HP Pavilion. I bought a 17" Toshiba but their placement of the right shift was replaced by an up arrow key which made typing nearly impossible. Constant correction of test was required. Ever since I paid attention to the ergonomics and rulled out dozens of notebooks in my son's and then my latest notebook.
    The changes of typywriter keys from the normal position should never ever be allowed. You don't mess with the follow key placements - Enter Key, shift keys, space bar, and I would add the Cntrl, alt, Ins & Del keys to that. It seems the Del key is a migrant since it all over the place.
    I had to find detailed photos of the T520 to verify the placement since the retailer don't sell them. Sticking to larger format or even 17" system does not guarantee the place is normal or as desired either. I have told sales people that a mutated little finger is required to reach the new shift key position. Its easier to keep those key where they should be than for me to get my little finger mutated by extending its length by at least a full digit in length.
    Do the manufacturers think everyone is a two finger typer or something. I am not nor is anyone in our family. Erognomice is key and a first priority in the selection of a notebook, display quality is 2nd and ports 3rd. Then I can select whats under the hood.
    I cannot leverage whats under the hood if the rest isn't there and I cannot use the system. Few small system conform to this anymore or have what it takes to endure the computing use of most business situations and even home use. Overheating is another issue and one reason I go for larger laptops, the keyboard and screen are larger giving me that benefit.
    Buyer need to pay more attention and if it is not for them just move on to something that is designed properly. There is no excuse for a properly laid out keyboard nor a quality screen with TFT being at least 10 years old and panels have made huge advances. The only place for garbage is in the dump.
    You'll have to change you systems standard and source something elsed. I don't believe mutating the fingers of the office users is an opton there either!!! LOL

  • Keeping per window keyboard layout under X11

    Sometimes you want to setup switching keyboard layouts using only X server - because there is no DE, or no DE keyboard plugin, or it's broken, or lacks needed functionality. You can easily configure X server to switch keyboard layouts, but I could not find way of keeping layout for each window separately using only X server. Hence this package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=54504
    Tested under xfce4.
    Example of usage (~/.xinitrc file)
    #!/bin/sh
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    export LANG=ru_RU.utf8
    setxkbmap -layout 'us,ru(winkeys)' -model pc105 -option grp:rwin_toggle,grp_led:num
    perWindowLayoutD
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4

    I've just installed openbox 3.5.0-4 and tried switching layouts. Alt+Tab works well for me - layout does change when changing windows. But there is another problem: if I close some window and focus goes to another window, layout isn't restored for this new focused window. Going to fix that.
    As for Alt+Tab openbox, I cannot reproduce any problem. Could you please be more specific, what the problem you see?

  • How can i disable Illustrator from changing my language / keyboard layout.

    I have an azerty laptop and a qwerty external keyboard. Switching from any application to illustrator changes the language and therefore also my keyboard layout. No other application does this.

    Thanks for the reply Mike
    But i have a laptop with azerty layout (Belgian) and an external qwerty keyboard (Brittish).
    So i need both languages selected in the System Pref >> Keyboard >> Input source
    When "Brittish" is selected and i switch from Apple Mail to Photoshop to Skype to Chrome to ... it all works fine.
    Only when i switch to Illustrator it also changes my language/layout from "Brittish" to "Belgian" and stays like that. I need to manually change it back in the menu in Finder.
    I like the brittish better (with a qwerty keyboard) because of the shortcuts (eg. sqare brackets -> shortcuts for order in Illustrator are not even on an azerty (Belgian) keyboard).
    Any idea?

  • Exchange a brand new computer because of the keyboard layout ?

    Hi !
    I'm currently in Finland for work, and I bought a Macbook Air, it's brand new so.
    But I didn't thought of the keyboard layout, which is of course Finnish;
    Do you think I can exchange this MBA with a one with the correct layout back in my country;
    Or is it better to return this MBA here, and buy a new one once I'm home ?
    I'd like to be able to return or exchange the MBA in my country, is the refund/exchange policy international ?
    Thanks

    The European law state you have anyway a 7 day open box return policy for this kind of product, I think I'll go to the store and ask if they can exchange it for one with international/US keyboard or give me a refund if they havn't got one.
    I got a callback appointement with Apple Support France tomorrow (my country) to ask them if it's possible to use the warranty to exchange layout. But as you said, I don't think it's possible since the keyboard is working perfectly fine..

  • Problem with Mail and customized keyboard layout

    I have created a customized keyboard layout in XML, it loads and works perfectly with all applications except Apple Mail. I noticed on a googlegroup that somebody has the same problem. How can I submit this Mail bug to Apple?

    download and run Find Any File to search for  "Antidote".
    FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. Any file you find will be in the search results window and can be dragged to the Desktop and then to the Trash bin.

            * Windows Server 2012R2 Datacenter Japanese
    ## Detail of bug
    When login from Mac OS X with Microsoft Remote Desktop, the keyboard layout is always incorrect on the remote.
    The client machine have a built-in keyboard of JIS 106 layout,
    and the primary language is set to Japanese.
    But on the remote, the keyboard layout is US 101.
    So a input of Shift+2 does not result " but @.
    I've seen the above behavior on the 3 remote enviornments described the above.
    This bug did not occcur with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1, even if the system language is English and keyboard layout is Japanese.
    ## Captures
    I've took some of screen captures.
    I'm sorry for the capture includes Japanese words, so I added description in English.
    Capture 1:
    Mac OS X Keyboard Setting
    Capture 2:
    Windows Server 2012R2 Screen Keyboard
    Capture 3:
    Windows Server 2012R2 Screen Keyboard, with a additional registry key configured.

    This bug also affects the Canadian English settings.  If the client is set to Canadian English with a US keyboard the remote server is setup using a Canadian French keyboard.  Using the language selection in the toolbar you can temporarily correct
    the problem but the keyboard resets to french at the most inopportune times.  The was a problem in the earlier RDP client and was fixed so it's sad to see it reoccur in the new client.

        * Case 3
            * Windows 8.1 (Hungarian)
    ## Detail of bug
    When I connect to the listed remotes the client sets the keyboard layout to Latvian which is a completely different layout than Hungarian (not even close...).
    - On Windows 8 if I set the language on the login screen it stays on that language after the login.
    - On Windows Server 2003R2 and 2008R2 even if I set the language at login it will switch back to LV after the login.
    ## Attachments
    Unfortunately cannot include my shots because I'm not allowed to do this...
    ## End of report
    Please allow the users to set the correct "target" language on connection basis because the automatic method the app use to determine that is unreliable.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the feedback.
    I will forward this to the product team.

    U can try make this steps:
    1. Run DW
    2. press SHIFT + F9
    3. Try to write some CODE
    4. Now I press CTRL+SHIFT (keyboard switch) and lose MyFocus.. every time
    I think u understand my trouble, PLS tell what i can do to resolve this.
    sor for bad eng.

    Perhaps I'm not following your logic.  But why must you work with remote images?
    Let's say your products page is uploaded to https://yourDomain.com/
    and your local images are in an images folder that uploads to https://yourDomain.com/images/
    Given that workflow, everything will be on the secure server so there is no reason to use remotely hosted images during development.

  • Keyboard layout switching not working

    i use xfce4 and i created /etc/X11/xorg.conf

        Identifier             "Keyboard Defaults"
        MatchIsKeyboard        "yes"
        Option                 "XkbLayout" "us, ar"
        Option                 "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle"
    EndSection
    but it's not working.
    xfce4 has a program called Keyboard in settings menu, i used it it gives the ability to add another language but it doesnt has a switching capability.

    I don't use keyboard layout switch through xorg.conf because it stops to work sometimes(if i use setxkbmap for example).
    So i am using setxkbmap in .xinitrc.
    setxkbmap -model pc105 \
    -layout "de,ru" \
    -variant "basic,phonetic" \
    -option -option "grp:sclk_toggle, grp_led:scroll, terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp, caps:none"
    and "kbdd" for remembering layout for each window.
    Change it to your needs or check the arch wiki about xorg.conf.d .
