T520: Slice battery charging thresholds stuck

I bought a T520 (4240) a few months ago and, like most people around here had the same issues with pulsing fans and, on applying BIOS 1.28, CPU throttling issues. I'm not sure if the latter one is fixed properly yet, but I also have a problem with the battery charging thresholds that has me stumped.
I have the 55++ and 27++ 9-cell main and "slice" batteries. For a while I let them charge up to 100% whenever connected to AC, but then I read that a 100% charge level is not recommended for day-to-day operation.
I use Fedora 15 Linux 99.9% of the time on my T520. I wanted to set the battery charge thresholds to avoid the 100% charge level, but the "tp_smapi" Linux driver doesn't work for the T520 (yet). I read somewhere that if I were to set the charge thresholds with the Lenovo Power Manager in Windows 7, that they would work in Linux as long as the laptop was not completely powered down when switching from Windows to Linux (i.e., use a warm boot). Well, it worked. In fact it worked really well: I could even power down and remove the batteries and something, somewhere would still remember that I wanted to start charging the slice battery when it dropped below 35% and stop charging it at 80%, even when running Fedora 15.
Having used the machine for a few weeks, I found that I used it on battery power a lot and liked to "top up" the batteries over night. The 35/80 thresholds didn't really suit my working pattern. So, back in the Power Manageer in Windows, I changed the battery thresholds from 35/80 to 50/88 for both batteries (55++ and 27++). On booting back to Linux, I noted that the main battery would respect the new levels, but he slice battery was still stuck on 35/80. Back in Windows, I tried changing the levels in different ways, but the slice battery refused to charge to more than 80%, even under Windows, no matter what I did. It seems that my first change from the default (is it 96/100?) to 35/80 has gotten stuck somewhere and I cannot change it again.
I even notice in the Power Manager that the slice battery constantly toggles between charging and not charging when under AC power if I set the threshold to 85/90. Because the 80% level where the battery is stuck is lower than 85% (my new "start" threshold), charging kicks in, but it immediately stops again, as it won't go over 80%, then, of course, it starts again and stops again, and so on.
How do I fully reset the charge thresholds on the slice battery so I can exceed 80% charge?

I had kind of given up on this, but thank you KooMaster for your confirmation that I am not alone with this issue. I don't think this is a problem with the Lenovo or Windows software, as this happens to me when running Linux without either of those. My guess is that the problem is in the embedded controller (EC) firmware. It is responsible for charging the batteries and enforcing the charging thresholds (that's why they still work even when the machine is turned off).
It probably makes sense to charge each battery to 80% first, as it likely only takes half of the overall charge time to get to that level (the last 20% taking as long again). That way, we get both batteries to a useful charge level as fast as possible. However, based on your observations, it seems that someone in Lenovo forgot to tell the EC to check that the main battery has reached its upper charge threshold, not that it has reached 100%, before topping the slice battery up to its upper charging threshold.
Can someone in Lenovo please comment on this issue, as I raised it over seven months ago now and I haven't heard a single word from any of you about it? "KooMaster" has confirmed the problem on a different model with different batteries, so it seems highly likely that a quick check of the (shared?) EC firmware code and a patch will resolve this quite quickly.
(I updated my BIOS and EC firmware today and it made no difference to my problem.)

  • Laptop battery "charging" but stuck at 0%

    Hi,
I have a Pavilion G6-1b79ca and the battery stopped charging.
Windows show "Plugged in, charging" and the level stay at 0%. Forever.
Obviously it is now completely drained.
If I remove the DC plug the computer close immediately.
Here is what I've done so far, more or less in that order:
    1. Replaced the battery (recommended by the BIOS openning page...)
    2. Tried this popular fix:
Shutdown->Remove Battery and power plug->Hold "POWER" button 30 sec->Plug DC cable->Boot->Device Manager->Battery->Uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Complient Control Method Battery ->Shutdown->Put Battery in (Can't boot on it alone since it won't charge... but maybe that could help)->Start computer
    3. Updated all drivers and reinstalled all HP utilities (got the Intel drivers directly from the Intel website)
    4. I updated the BIOS to the latest version and reseted it to default settings
    5. Tested the power adapter with a multimeter (Psu unloaded, referenced to outer ground sleeve it read 19.8V=Inner plug, 18V center pin)
    6. Replaced the motherboard (which has been replaced already)
    7. Replaced the PSU
    8. Reinstalled Windows
    9. Soldered the power adapter directly to the motherboard to bypass all contact connections (cut the DC plug and soldered the bare wires directly to the pcb)
The HP BIOS utility (F2 at startup) tells me that the new battery fails the test and need to be replaced. Awesome.
The battery test in the HP assistant utility (run in Windows) tells me that the battery is OK but would need to be charged (Seriously???? This is becoming funny...)
So basically the hardware is brand new.
Windows/HP utility tells me that the battery is OK but the BIOS utility will tell me to replace it.
    What the hell is happening????
The hardware is supposed to be A1 (fully replaced) and windows have been completely reinstalled.
Any suggestion?? My sanity start to fade....
On a side note, here is the situation I hope did not happened:
    1. The original battery failed
    2. It burned the motherboard charging circuit
    3. I replaced the battery which then got damaged by the burned motherboard charging circuit
    4. I finally replaced the motherboard which got damaged by the new battery, that was damaged by the previous motherboard, which was damaged by the original battery....
    5. Back to square one, a couple of hundred $ less and a lot of time lost....
I can't see myself buying ANOTHER motherboard/battery combo without going crazy.....
    Thanks for any help !
    This question was solved.

    IT'S ALIVE!!! Lolll!
The problem was the new battery, I don't know why but it was completely drained and never got to charge.
I ask the seller to replace it and to charge the new one a bit so I was able to boot on the battery only.
I removed the psu and the battery, held the POWER button 30sec and booted on the battery alone.
Once in Windows I pluged the charger and now it is fully charged!
Looks like the key here was to be able to boot on the battery alone. a thing I never could achieve while struggling with the drained one.
Hope this thread help someone to troubleshoot battery problems, since it contains a LOT of possible solutions.
Thanks to those who took of their time to help!

  • Charge threshold w/ utrabay battery and Windows 8

    Hello
One more problem with the missing Power Manager under Windows 8.
The battery charge threshold can be changed in the registry or using the freeware utility in http://thinkutils.wordpress.com/collection/power-manager/
Does anybody know how I can set the charge threshold when using a second battery in my T430s' ultrabay?
I have tried many things with the registry, nothing worked reliably. At the end nothing worked any more and I had to use a restore point...
It would be good if Lenovo would hear to their customers an bring us back the Power Manager functionality!
    Regards
    Patrick

Hey, nobody else has an ultrabay battery and would like to optimize its charge?
After having had almost no problems with my T410s and Windows 7, now I'm beginning to bitterly regret having updated to a T430s with Win 8. Much heavier machine, unreliable WLAN (after the last Lenovo update, it didn't work any more at all...), unreliable BlueTooth, no more Power Manager and so on. Is that what Lenovo and Microsoft understand under "technical improvements"?
    Regards

  • X220 Will Not Charge When Primary Battery is Dead with Slice Battery Installed

I have got it to do this twice so far, so looks like a problem.  My wife always puts her X220 to sleep versus shutdown.  Sleep still uses some power apparently which is fine.  It looks like it is draining only the primary battery even though the slice battery is connected.
The issue is that with the primary battery drained and the slice battery connected, the TP will not power up.  Plug the power adapter into the slice battery and still no power up.  The slice battery charged to 100% with it pluged in, but the primary battery would not charge.  Plug the power adapter into the X220 directly and let it charge for a moment, then everything works as it should even if you then move the power adapter back to the slice battery.
So if the primary battery is dead, the slice battery and charging the primary battery through it seems to stop working under this scenario.
Obviously not a huge deal since we now know what causes this, but maybe someone wants to fix some day.
I am using BIOS 1.16 and have been for a while.

    hey DevItHere,
have you tried updating your bios and at the same time uninstalling the power manager for your X220 and reinstalling it ?
    if not, please do so

  • [somewhat solved] Charging thresholds with tp_smapi issue

I installed the latest Arch linux on my Thinkpad Edge e420 without any issues (so Ubuntu did teach me something the last ~5 years) and was following the tp_smapi wiki how-to on changing the battery charging thresholds when I found that when I set either one (either start or stop), it would change the other to being one less or one more:
    [root@arch josh]# echo 80 > /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/stop_charge_thresh
    [root@arch josh]# cat /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/stop_charge_thresh
    80
    [root@arch josh]# cat /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/start_charge_thresh
    81
    [root@arch josh]# echo 40 > /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/start_charge_thresh
    [root@arch josh]# cat /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/start_charge_thresh
    40
    [root@arch josh]# cat /sys/devices/platform/smapi/BAT0/stop_charge_thresh
    39
And this happens for whatever number I chose for `start_charge_thresh` or `stop_charge_thresh`. Running `lsmod`, I see that `tp_smapi` and `thinkpad_ec` are both installed and running,
    josh@arch~ # lsmod
    tp_smapi 20660 0
    thinkpad_ec 4253 1 tp_smapi
Any suggestions? Or needed extra information?

Despite having the start/stop_charging_threshold set as 40/39 as in the above example, my battery charges to 80% and then stops (I've done this three separate times, leaving it plugged in with enough time to charge it 100%, and each time it stopped at 80). Another one of those Linux quirks, I guess.

You probably need to recalibrate the battery. See link below.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Why is my iPhone 4S stuck on a 1% battery charge, despite being charged for 30 hours?

I have had my iPhone 4S for barely ten months. In the past, I have had small problems that would either fix themselves or just stop occurring, such as freezing issues.  But recently my phone was drained to a 1% and after realizing this I quickly plugged it into a car charger. About 15 minutes later, I noticed it had switched to an 100% battery charge. I blew it off and the next time I glanced at my phone it was back to 1%, so I turned it off thinking it would reset it and I would leave it to charge. I came back to the phone maybe 30 minutes later to power it up and it displayed the red sliver of battery with a lightning bolt underneath it. It stayed like this for a good while and eventually came on. Since then it has been stuck on this 1% battery charge. One last thing I noticed was that the bolt inside of the battery on the top right hand corner sometimes shows a plug, saying its fully charged. I'd rather not turn it off because I'm not sure it will come back on. What do you guys suggest I do?

I have this same issue... the phone was fine, then 3 days ago then I noticed it was draining itself whilst on charge. Now it charges to 1% and lasts all day on that unless I reboot, then it just says plug it in and wont reboot! I have had a 100% charge, but it drained down to 9% in under an hour and then stayed at 9% all day. This is obviously an issue, so why is Apple not sorting it out?
Also, these kind of comments (BELOW) are about as useful as, "is it plugged in?"
    "diesel vdub Atlanta, GA
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore.
Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved."
I have tried 3 cables, 2 wall chargers and 2 docks, so it has nothing to do with those. I have cleaned the connections, so it's not dirt. It isn't water damage as the phone has been nowhere near water.

  • T61p new battery custom charging thresholds unfunctional

Hi! I bought a new genuine lenovo battery for my T61p 8891 CTO running Win7 64bit. When I use this new battery, the custom values inside the battery maintenance dialogue are complely ignored, and the system always charges the battery to 100%, even if I plug it in at 98%. With the old battery, I worked with 70%-90% thresholds which worked perfectly fine! But not with the brand new Lenovo spare part. I updated to Power Manager 6.36 and installed the latest PM Drivers from Lenovo Driver Matrix, but nothing works. I already tried to reset the battery, but that error won't let the discharge cycle happen, because as soon as the battery reaches 99%, it is reloaded. Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The charge thresholds seem to be specific for the battery you're using when you set them, if you plug in a different battery it will ignore them. I'd recommend putting the old battery back in, turning off the custom settings, close power manager then shut down and switch batteries and restart. You should now ab able to set a charge threshold for the new battery...   assuming it's working properly.
If you want to do a deep cycle recharge to condition the battery, run it as close to 0% as you can get, then boot to bios  and let the computer sit until it shuts off from low battery, you'll then be as close to 0% as possible. Now plug in AC power (without starting the comptuer) and let it charge for 8-10 hours.
When finished not only check that the charge threshold work, but also your max capacity to make sure it's close to 100% of design limit. I've seen brand new batteries in the 80% range before, but most are 98-102%. If a brand new battery is below 95% or so I'd see about getting it replaced under warranty.

    Hi Mobal,
When you say "always on", is it green and flashing or green and always on? Solid green (not blinking) means fully charged and not charging. And I think the Windows Power indicator would be the more accurate of the two.

  • New battery charge us not increasing. Stuck at16%

I Had a new battery installed in my iPhone 5 today and the battery charge has not increased at all. Still at 16% the same as it was when I got it back 3 hours ago. Is it's to be expected or do I need to return to the Apple store?

Thank you.  I went to the apple store and they said the phone needs to be replaced and they don't have a 5 and it has to be exact goods for goods so they will get one tomorrow.  The crashing is a hardware problem and they cannot fix it.  I do appreciate your guidance.

  • Battery charge info in status bar is incorrect!  HELP!

This issue started a day or two ago and at first I thought it was no big deal, but it's actually quite a problem! I've got a 15.4" Macbook Pro that I bought in May, and have never had any problems up until this point. But then I noticed that the icon in the status bar where it says the percentage of battery charge and says whether it's running off battery or it's plugged in - it's WRONG. It's stuck at 99% and says it's plugged in. All the time. Even when it's almost dead and not plugged in. So I can't tell how much battery charge it has left. In all of the places where you can view info about the battery, the info is wrong - it says it's fully charged, that I have a long time left, etc. but it's not true. So now it can completely out of batteries and shut down and I won't be able to tell that it's running low.
Has anyone had this problem? What do I do? Is this a software or a hardware issue? HELP!

Have you tried resetting the PRAM ?

Besweet, I'm having the very same problem with 60GB colour which was bought new and worked for 6 months before suddenly just not being recognised by PC. I hadn't changed anything at all.
I've followed all troubleshooting advice and reinstalled and updated iTunes and iPod updater software but all troubleshooting routes seem to hit the dead end of either the need to access the iPod via the PC (which isn't possible as it's not showing up at all) or the iPod in disc mode stuck at "ok to disconnect".
It's still under 1yr warranty so will have to take to a dealer.
I'm sorry that's not much help for you but at least you know it's not a unique problem.

  • Y50 battery charging problems

    hello,
received my new y50 a few days ago and began seting it up. the first few hours it was working fine. battery charged up to the full 100%, i then disconected the power cord to let the battery drain down to about 20%. i then plugged it back in and shut the computer down left it charging overnight. this is when the problems started.
waking up the next day i turn it back on to see that the battery is only at 21%. no mater how long i left it charging it did not change from 21%. So i decide to unplug it again to let it fully discharge. while unplugged it ran for another ~hour all the time staying at 21% until i finally shut off out of nowhere.
plugged in the cord and turned it back on, battery shows 0% plugged in, charging. but it never gains any % charge just stuck there. i do some reading online and decide to do the generic power down, unplug power cord and remove battery, hold power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect everything and power up. When it boots up the battery indicator now shows 2% and over the course of the next 10-12 hours it increased by mabe 30% more. the indicator NEVER changes its percent the only way to see the change in the charge is to shutdown/restart.
today is the third day and after many hours of use i got stuck at around 76% (only reaching this number by restarting every few hours to get a new updated battery charge%)  since it stayed stuck at 76% for a while i went for the more hardcore fix ive seen online:
power down> unplug power cord>remove battery>plugin power cord and startup on power cord only>uninstalled the microsoft acpi-compliant control method battery driver>shut down>re-installed battery>plugged in cord and restarted. the driver then automatically re-installed itself and brings me to where i am now.
now a few hours since doing that im up to 83% charge, but same problem remains the only way to update the charge % is by restarting/shutdown and occasionally i can remove the power cord and plug it back in while computer is on and it will update.
Any advice or suggestions on what to do, the 2 main problems i see are:
    1. battery charge % doesnt update dynamically, requires power down of some form to update it
    2. over 24 hours of being 'plugged in,chargin' just to charge ~80%

i have found the culprit to the problem, but it is one that doesnt make much sense to me.
if i try to install the intel video drivers from the y50-70 drivers page in lenovo support, or if i try to install the intel video driver from windows update, i lose the functionality of the battery indicator. it does show when its connected to ac or runnig on battery power, but it wont update the % load nor time remaining. only way to charge to full is when off.
i did ANOTHER fresh install and am currently running with all drivers installed except for any version of intel video driver and the battery indicator and charging times when powered on are functioning.
any chance to get new intel video drivers for win 8.1 for hte y50-70?
