T520 WinFlash crashes

When trying to update the BIOS on the T520, using the Lenovo Update Manager, it runs WinFlash, which crashes when you select next to update the BIOS.
The OS is Windows 7 64-bit.
Any idea's?

If you are using DEP (Data Execution Protection), it is a known issue that was fixed by BIOS version 1.32 for T520.  What version is the updater trying to use?  Please try to manually install the BIOS from here:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77001
and let us know how it goes.  thanks!

  • Satellite A660-11M - BIOS updater (Winflash) crashes every time

    Hi all,
I bought an A660-11M a few months ago and thought I'd update the BIOS to stop Tempro nagging and see if it helped any niggling problems I've been trying to fix. I downloaded the zip, extracted and ran the .exe as per instructions on the help site. Winflash opens, runs the first step (load new bios) but freezes on step two (analyse old and new bios compatibility). Then a 'Winflash.exe has stopped working' message from Windows pops up.
This happens whenever I try it, even with antivirus shut down and straight after startup with no other programs running.
    Any ideas?
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, I've 'dualbooted' Ubuntu using wubi but the bios update was failing before I installed it...perhaps it would work better in Wine? ;)
    Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the speedy replies! I did read a lot about not touching the bios unless there were serious problems, but I have had occasional random start ups (particularly from suspend) that I wouldn't mind fixing and as the advice is usually something about making sure the bios is up to date I thought I'd have a go.
I'll try reinstalling Value Addded Package and see what happens - it shows as installed in Control Panel but I did uninstall some of the Toshiba bloatware. Thought I left the important stuff alone though... If that doesn't work I'll ignore it and go for the quiet life!
@Xardas: I was terrified when it froze the first time! I gave it two hours before rebooting but I seem to have had a lucky escape. :)

  • Cannot update BIOS, winflash.exe crashes

I downloaded the BIOS update tool to update to 1.19, but it crashes immediately when it launches winflash.exe. I am plugged into the AC adapter and have a full battery. I'm on an x220 running Windows 7 Professional x64. Any help you have would be much appreciated.
    Solved!

then why do they (Lenovo) still have this posted for 64 bit systems Notes:
(*1) If Windows 7 or Vista 64-bit is already installed on your system, then you must use the bootable CD ISO format of this BIOS update.
    - On Windows 7 64-bit and Vista 64-bit, the BIOS itself is supported, however, this package for BIOS update does not work.
    - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system.

  • Lenovo T520 Optimus - IE9 32 Bit Crashes

    Hello:
I've been unable to use IE9 32 bit because it crashes shortly after I open the application.  I've disabled evey add-on and it still occurs.  Read something on Lenovo support that something with Optimus causes this.  To temporarily resolve this, I had to use "Software Rendering" vs navtive GPU acceleration.  I installed the latest drivers but the issue remained.
Has anyone solved this problem without using "software rendering" option?  I"m getting used to the IE9 interface over IE8 and would like to switch.
    Thanks,

    Hi ThorsHammer:
Thanks for the suggestion with Adobe Flash.  I uninstalled all the Adobe Flash software on my T520.   Restarted the computer and installed IE9 and then reinstalled Adobe Flash 10.3 as web sites required.  Left GPU acceleration TURNED ON.  I haven't had any problems so far.  Let's hope this continutes.

  • Lync 2013 basic crashing on T520 and T530?

We use SCCM to deploy our machines and with the Thinkpad's T520 and T530 having the Intel HD 3000 or 4000 graphical card the application is crashing without reason
When we use Teamviewer in a remote session Lync is working fine. How come and how can we solve this?

Peer to peer or 1-on-1 chatting send the audio peer to peer (not through the server).  When you add another participant, the audio then flows through an A/V Conferencing Server (assuming you're running 2010 server per the forum you posed in, this is
often the same as your front end pool).  This sounds like a port restriction or connectivity issue.

  • T520 power failure crash

I have a Lenovo T520 laptop which is loaded with Windows 7 and a collection of middleweight programming software - MS Visual Studio, Expression Blend, a few more of similar ilk.  It's less than a year old.  On several occasions over the last couple of months, it's displayed a really ugly kind of crash.  The symptoms are thus: without any warning or error message, the keyboard and mouse quit responding.  20-30 seconds later, the laptop goes dead, exactly as if it was a desktop machine and someone had pulled out the power cord.  It doesn't go to sleep, it doesn't hibernate, it just stops.  As far as I can tell, nothing is written to any of the logfiles.  Pressing the power button turns it on as if from a cold shutdown, except that Windows complains it wasn't shut down properly.
There's no pattern that I can find.  It doesn't seem to be related to disk space, how long it's been running, number of apps open, which specific apps are open, or what I'm doing when it dies.  It's happened when plugged into the docking station, and when running stand-alone.  The only common element seems to be that it always happens when the machine is plugged into a second monitor, configured as an expanded desktop.  The crashes tend to come in clusters: it can be fine for several weeks, then crash 2 or 3 times in the same day.  Basic diagnostic checks haven't turned up anything.
Anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

If you're up to date with the software via Thinkvantage tools - update files/drivers.
I would look at you power profile and set your performance to the top end and turn off HD going to sleep or spinning down. The absense of an active hard drive on demand it the cause for many applications to croak. Few are behaved enough to wait and pickup after 4-5 secs delay to come back online and respond. I don't care what the support people might say its not reliable for many situations. Power saving options for criticle devices is not viable to turn off including network devices. Unless you don't use them and all. But if you do don't let them be turned off as they can even when plugged in.

  • Office 2003 crashes on TP T520 Windows 7 pro 64bits

    Hello,
As stated in the subject, I have random crashes of Office 2003 with windows 7 pro 64 bit
    I have already:
    - "Repaired" Office with the config pannel
    - "Uninstalled and reinstalled" office, also by removing the keys in the Registry Office
    - "Repaired" Windows, then "uninstalled and reinstalled" Office
    - "Uninstalled and reinstalled" office, with the MS tool FIX IT
    - "Uninstalled and reinstalled" the Bluetooth driver (told to me on another forum)
Always the same: All of Office apps crash randomly, and often leaving the application
If someone has an idea (I must absolutely use version 2003)??
    Thanks

  • No driver matches ThinkPad T520, alwyas BSoD, consider hardware issue

    Hi,
My laptop is Lenovo ThinkPad T520 4242-4UU
    Hardware configuration is:
    Core i7 2620M / 2.7 GHz - vPro
    RAM 4 GB
    HDD 500 GB
    NVS 4200M / HD Graphics 3000
    OS Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate
I've got this laptop on July, 2011. At first, it works perfect. But since 2012, the bluescreen problem, as attached, has happened frequently and really annoy me a lot.
I've reinstaled the Windows 7, and tried different driver, but none of them solve the problem throughly.
    The driver I've tried are:
    - NVIDIA Official
    - Verde 296.10 Driver WHQL
    - Verde 295.73 Driver WHQL
    - Verde 295.51 Driver BETA
    - Verde 290.53 Driver BETA
    - Lenovo Official
    - NVIDIA Optimus Display
    - 8.17.12.7593 (NVIDIA Graphics Driver)
    - 1.2.23.3 (NVIDIA HD Audio Driver)
    - 8.15.10.2538 (Intel Graphics Driver)
    - Details of this driver is here: http://download.leno...es/83de42ww.txt
Normally, bluescreen will happen when I drag a picture into Photoshop CS5, or open some PDF files with Adobe Reader 10.1.2. It happened so sudden, that I have not got a chance to see the picture be opened in Photoshop, or the PDF be displayed in Adobe, bluescreen befell. These are two major software came across bluescreen. However, when I reboot the laptop, and reopen the same picture, or reopen the same PDF, it won't cause bluescreen anymore. (But the Photoshop will prompt that the driver of GPU is crashed and has automatically turn off my GPU acceleration) It just like a random bluescreen by the god.
Other software, like Internet Explore 8.0, Firefox 10.0, QQ 2012, or came across bluescreen once or two, but not often.
It's so weird that I cannot figure it out why and how to solve.
Is there any friends have the same problem. Or any ideas to solve it?
Many thanks and wish everyone has a great weekend.

  • BSOD occurs when SD card inserted. FASTFAT.SYS crashes.

I this will happen almost everytime if the machine has been in use for some time. Inserting an SD card (4GB Canon format) a BSOD is virtually guaranteed. After a new boot up it works fine but catastrophic if not since all info is lost and nothing is closed.
I looked at the dump file and the FASTFAT.SYS is the cause of the crash. This is a very old driver used in Windows 7 and there are numerous issues with it in many forums dating back even to XP. There are no crashes introduced by any other device or USB key/drive connected. Only the SD card.
I thought it may have be due to the USB controller being turned off for power conservation but even after removing the ability by toggling not to turn off to save power to the USB devices it still crashed the very next time I used it which was days later. The system was plugged in as well as it usually is.
I can do the same thing on my old notebook with its internal multicast reader running Window 7 32 bit and it does not have a problem. The Thinkpad does with Win 7 64bit. I am always conscious of a BSOD occurring if I dare plug in my camera card. This renders the port useless since I cannot afford regular crashes and a card reader externally may have to be used.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I had exactly the same problem and have managed to solve it, however it took me several sleepless nights.
The faulty driver my Card reader used was ver. 6.10.10.32 (according to info in Device manager). I found another driver on Lenovo's website (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8axw02ww.exe ; ver. 6.20.11.42 dated 4th July 2012). What I did was install the new driver. During the installation process I found it was not digitally signed, but I continued the installation process anyway. Then, in Device manager, I chose the Card controller (in IDE ATA/ATAPI section) and clicked on Update driver. I chose manual installation and indicated the place where my driver was saved (by default: C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MULTICARD). Windows won't let you use the driver straight away as it lacks digital signature and here is how to cope with that: http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/how-to-install-use-unsigned-drivers-in-windows-vista-7-x64.... . I followed "Solution number 2" and the "Finding out what files to sign" section. If you do it carefully, your drivers will be signed automatically and the whole procedure will finish at this point.
The only difference is that my Card reader is now listed under Storage controllers, which changes nothing, in fact. I have tried using different SD cards and have not encountered the BSOD anymore.
    Hope you'll find that useful.
    Cheers,
    Robert

  • Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Crashes XP-Pro T61

I recently updated my windows XP Pro SP2 version of windows to SP3. When I went to connect my wireless, it successfully connected, but then I got the BSOD suggesting I uninstall any recently installed h/w or s/w. Windows error reporting suggested a wireless adapter problem, and sure enough, as soon as I disabled the Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection adapter, the crashing stopped. So I went into device drivers, and attempted to update the driver, but was told that it was already updated.
Then I went to Intel’s website and found a couple of updates, but they indicated:
“The driver version of the following products will not update. The Intel PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software version will be updated.
    Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection”
So since I prefer to use the ThinkVantage Access connections, I decided to run ThinkVantage System Update, but got the message: “An error occurred while gathering user information.” So I was going to try the solution George had given me a few days ago to solve my “T42 will not connect to secure home wireless/ThinkVantage Access Connections Freezes” problem:
Of downloading the latest version of System Update from here:
     http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS013489
    But I wasn’t sure that would work for my T61 Type 7665-CTO s/n **-***** 08/05. Product ID 7665WZK.

    'afternoon.
first, you should edit your post to remove your serial number.
next, the version of TVSU you linked is correct for your XP machine. the version for win7 was just updated to v5.
finally, if you want to bypass TVSU, for now, you can get any drivers for your PC from the driver matrix here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-67853
looks like the WLAN driver pack you could use is v14.03.000 available here:

  • ThinkPad T520 water damage and recovery

Hello, My T520 got dripping water inside and cannot power on. This happened when I was asleep so I had no idea from where the water went inside and how much. (It's a fan AC over my PC. I heared water dripping in my sleep and hadn't figured out it would end up this far  ). I could not turn on my PC the next afternoon. The PC exterior seemed pretty dry and that's why it took me so long to figure out the cause of the damage. Enough about the bad luck, here is how I have attempted to save my PC. I first took out the keyboard. No sign of liquid inside (of course, it had happened nearly 12 hours ago and it's late July in Illinois). Then I placed all parts under my fan overnight (no dripping this time). Next morning it still wouldn't power on (this almost crashed me!!!) Then I  put my PC in a bag of 25LB rice. My friend told me to let it sit in for a week. Meanwhile, I ordered a new keyboard online. Judging from the exact location of my PC when this accident happened, I guess the water mostly got into the keyboard. I plan to try the new keyboard after my PC has spent a week in a bag of rice. If none of these works, I will have to get to an expert to recover all the stuff in my PC and then get a new one. The most frustrating part is that all my college life is in it and I backed it up last summer... Is it possible that I can get my PC content recovered? The least I wish for is to get the stuff out and in a mobile hard disk. I had planned to get a new PC this winter after graduation anyway. Thanks in advance and best regards!

Chances are your hard drive will be alright, so just pull the drive and use a USB caddy to read it on another computer (assuming you don't have an HDD password set).

  • Lenovo T420 Integrated Camera Crashes

I have a Lenovo T420 and have some funky issue with my Integrated Camera. The camera seems to crash whenever I pull the display closer towards the keyboard. And if the display makes a 90 degree angle or less with the keyboard it never works. See below drawing for problem details.
Can anybody help me shed some light on this weird problem and how I might fix it?

It does not happen on my T520 with Fedora 18.

  • Discrete Graphics Crashing

I have a mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro (with the GT330M). Under OSX, the graphics will crash and the screen will go permanently blank, maybe with some audio glitch. Under windows, the graphics driver will crash and reset, or in some cases hang the entire system. It happens with a variety of applications.
    Is it a hardware problem?

The bios cannot be set for an option you don't have.
Check you system build configuration for it.

         }this is deadlock
    *int list = 0;*
*while((list = record.size)<1) was screwing things up because of the assignment*record is ArrayList of strings. when better to use Vector instead of ArrayList? i notice no differnce and i use threads
initially I thought record.size was being evaluated and before could be assigned to list, time slice ran out. this could not be case because I use ReentrantLock (list) to lock it.
