T520i 4239 Win7 What TV Programs Should Be Installed?

What ThinkVantage Programs Should Be Installed? For example, I asked if Presentation Director was available for Win7 and the reply was Win7 has a utility that handles that built-in using the MS Key + P.
So my question is moving from the XP SP3 world to Win7, what ThinkVantage programs should I have? My T520i has clean intalled with Win7 Professional.
Currently what is intalled is:
TV Communication Utility
TV Autolock
TV Active Protection System
TV Access Connections
This list excludes things lik the UltraNav Utility and System Update. I haven't yet installed R&R which is on my "to do" list but is there any additional programs.
Your feedback and advice is appreciated.

Email address spoofing is very common. It is nearly 100% certain that your email address wound up on someone's Windows computer that has become a victim of any number of potential Outlook address book harvesting attacks.
If you have not done so already, update to OS X 10.7.4. Then, update your profile:
The OS X update alone has nothing to do with your email account. The reason I am suggesting this is that if you haven't updated to 10.7.4, you may not be aware of other recent software updates. Run Software Update.

You can currently only buy the current version Aperture 3.4.3 at the AppStore, and that version requires MacOS X 10.7.5. at least, see the release notes: Aperture 3.4.3
So you will not be able to install this version on your Snow leopard machine. Maybe you can buy a boxed retail version of an earlier release, compatible with Snow Leopard, but the newer version is faster and compatible with iCloud.
Do your iMacs both have the same processors and memory? You will wan to use your fastest mac with the best graphics card and the most RAM to run Aperture, also a large screen would be desirable.

  • I have a macbook pro what virus protection should i install?

I have a macbook pro, what virus protection should I install?

    1. This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
    3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't actually been tested by Apple (unless it comes from the Mac App Store), but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. For most practical purposes, applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed can be considered safe.
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could find some other way to evade Apple's controls.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is presumably effective against known attacks, but maybe not against unknown attacks. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. Beyond XProtect, Gatekeeper, and MRT, there’s no evidence of any benefit from other automated protection against malware. The first and best line of defense is always your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you never use software that comes from an untrustworthy source. How do you know whether a source is trustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or "cracks" of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe.
    6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Follow the above guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself from malware.
    7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software  ClamXav — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    8. ClamXav doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
ClamXav is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
    ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
ClamXav may be able to tell you which particular virus or trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use ClamXav unless a network administrator requires you to run an anti-virus application.
    9. The greatest harm done by security software, in my opinion, is in its effect on human behavior. It does little or nothing to protect people from emerging threats, but if they get a false sense of security from it, they may feel free to do things that expose them to higher risk. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.
    10. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.

  • Qlogic what firmware version should be installed

I'm having trouble with a couple of new qlogic 5600 switches (the switch wants to assign my clients as target and not initiators). which firmware version should be installed on the switches? i'm having quite a lot of trouble with this upgrade and any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

thanks for your reply Donald. I did manage to get the FC switch and hba cards working properly. I was aware of the device scan and streamgard settings on the switch, but the feedback i was getting from the switch was worrisome (some targets were listed as initiators on the switch and vicaversa). What solved the problem for me was to load the latest qlogic firmware 7.0.1...(i think), and it started giving the correct devices on each port. The new firmware also allowed me to log on to the switch through a web browser on my mac and not the antiquated "San Surfer" java app that came with the switches. I also had to set my hba to point-to-point and not automatic. I also set my arrays to point to point as well. I have 2 xserve RAIDs and a new promise array all set for "point-to-point". The old emulex switch we were using before was much nicer to work with than the qLogic switches that I just installed, and I found myself longing for the simplicity of the setup on the emulex.
Everything is working great now...I'm getting very fast throughput (250mb/sec).
The only remaining grief is that everytime I quit the admin app and relaunch it, it won't reconnect with my mdc's and i have to delete the xsan admin preference in my admin/library/preferences/ folder to reattach the admin app and administer my san. any ideas?

  • What email program should I use?

I have Safari 1.3.2 which I assume is the final upgrade for 10.3. I changed my browser to Firefox because of some of the problems with Safari. I was a long user of Netscape, including their email program. I want to keep Panther as my operating system. Should I use the Safari 1.3.2 for email? Want would you recommend for email, something different?

    Hi again,
Yes, the Navigator Composer/Mail bundle... it's a good one if you like it. Has a lot of extra's to it. If you want to check out others, have you tried the one that comes with MacOSX? It's simply called Mail. It's the one I use now... it's simple, has some extra's and is all I need. Some like Microsoft Entourage which comes with the new Mac as a trial and is bundled with the Microsoft Office Suite... if you have that bundle. I find it has much more then I want to be a simple program, maybe some office types could use all that stuff, but I don't.
Camino is just a browser. SeaMonkey is the Mac version of Netscape... it has all the elements of Navigator... composer, mail, browser and with all the same icons... it is just more Mac-Friendly then Navigator can be. This one would be worth a look if you are used to Netscape (since Netscape is now without support and has been acquired by AOL), and SeaMonkey is still going and improving.
A stand alone mail program called ThunderBird on the Mozilla web-site is also an alternative if you want something different to try out. I have given it a look, but again it has too many bells and elements for my simple use style.
So, I have grown used to Mail which is a natural for this Mac... works well, simple and yet some bell's to enhance with. But, you, can now give some others a look/feel and see what you think.
    Enjoy

  • What mac program should I use to edit html?

I am used to editing my website using html on my old PC but am now using the mac much more and would like to do it from here. I transferred the file over but can't work out which program to use for the editing. Thanks for any help with this.

Are you looking to edit the raw HTML itself?  If so, you can't do better than the free TextWrangler or its not-free big brother, BBEdit (made by the same company).  I personally use TextWrangler.
If you're looking for an editor that won't make you look at the HTML, what were you using on the PC?

  • What defrag program should I use

What is the best free defrag program I can use

I run 8-10 Macs in a network for my photography business and have done so for years.  Any notion that Macs or OSX do not need to be defragged is utterly wrong.  HARD DRIVES begin fragmenting the moment you start using them.  ALL hard drives, regardless of platform.
While it may be technically correct that OSX itself doesn't need to be defragged - perhaps - ALL hard drives need maintenance or severely fragmented drives will cause lots of frustrating spinning ball...  Apple has always claimed OSX does not need to be defragged - a confusing comment - since it makes them a LOT of money since people often believe a slow Mac needs to be replaced when, in truth, Genius bar technicians often use Drive Genius 3 to defrag and optimize your dysfunctional Mac.
Hard drives become fragmented much more quickly if you move a lot of large files frequently, as opposed to lots of small files BUT small files can also add up, in time, to cause fragmentation.  Once the drive is severely fragmented,k you get a LOT of spinnning ball on a Mac - period.  A hard drive is like oil in a car engine - changing the oil now and then is mandatory - just like defragging is neccesary now and then if your Mac gets slow.
Example:  In the office my business partner has been running an older iMac for 6 years.  Just recently it progressed to being so sluggish - spinning ball constantly - that it barely ran at all.  I admit to not having paid attention to her office Mac, so my fault...    She was frustrated beyond belief - it was tough to accomplish any office task.
Yesterday I tested her drive for fragmentation using Drive Genius 3 to discover her drive was 25% fragmented - enormous for a Mac, in my experience.  Naturally, my business partner felt she needed a new Mac.  I wish I owned every Mac folks throw out due to nothing more than having a need for defragmentation...
Drive Genius 3 would <not> run on her 2007 Intel iMac 2 ghz machine so I resorted to an old copy of iDefrag which ran like a charm!!!  This morning, after running iDefrag last night, her machine is as snappy as a brand new Mac!
Folks, do NOT believe those who say your Mac never needs to be defragged.  Yes, Apple does say OS 10 doesn't need defragging BUT <your hard drive DOES need it> once it become severely fragmented.  I am not a deep techie - I know only what keeps my Macs which often run 12 hours/day in good shape. I assure you Macs DO need to be defragged.
Be aware some utilities like TechTool Pro and Drive Genius do not work on all Macs.  (call the utility tech support immediately if a newly purchased utility will not boot up on your Mac)  In the case of my partner's iMac yesterday, only iDefrag would boot up but it did a great job!

  • Satellite A30: What important drivers should I install

Hi, My Satellite A30 PSA30E had a major crash a while ago, now I have to reinstall everything but I lost my boot disc, I got an XP disc and I kno I have to install the drivers afterwards. I was just wondering what ones are the most important and if I need to install them in any specific order.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
If you want to use all notebook features you should install all available XP drivers from the Toshiba driver page.
You ask for the most important drivers? Well, you should install
    - Chip Set Utility
    - Display Driver
    - Sound Driver
    - LAN Driver
    - Wireless Lan Driver
    - Cardbus Driver
    - Touch Pad Driver
    - Modem Driver
Other utilities like Toshiba Console or E-Key are needed to use the notebooks features but you the unit will run also without these programs

  • I feel I must move beyond iMovie, what program should I use ?

I have been happily using iMovie and iDVD from versions 1 through 6.  iMovie 08 was so bad that Apple made iMovie 06 available as a free download for buyers of iMovie 08. The newer iMovies were better, but they seemed “dumbed down” (even for me).  Now, I am shocked and horrified to learn that the latest iMovie does not even set chapter markers!
So, I have continued to use iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (they seem to work fine under OS 10.9.4).   iMovie 06 is now 8 years old!  I feel compelled to move forward. A lot of my work is DV.    In the past, most of my source material came out of S-Video.   I used a Canopus ADVC300 analog-to-digital converter that gave good results.   Going forward, I will have more video utilizing Component Video, or HDMI.
I am looking into 2 possibilities,  Adobe Premiere elements 12, or.........Final Cut Pro X.
The final result of my work is almost always a DVD.   It is hard for me to move from iMovie and iDVD.  I never read the manuals for either program, yet,  I was able to produce DVDs with nice menus and overall quality close to Hollywood.
It looks like Final Cut Pro X 'can' make a DVD directly without other software.  However, from what I have seen on YouTube the result is primitive compared to what iDVD was doing 10 years ago.
Adobe Premiere elements 12 can make nice DVDs and Blu-ray's directly.  I have no problem with using a separate program to make DVDs but I haven't got a clue how to do that with Final Cut Pro X.   I suppose I can still use iDVD, but now I'm back to using discontinued software.
I do not need any of the high-powered affects capability that Final Cut Pro X  possesses.  My “movie-making” is mostly confined to simple editing (the old iMovie 06 did all I needed).
Frankly, one motivation for choosing Final Cut Pro X, is the excellent, compassionate and understanding support that the kind people on this very forum provide.  So, what program should I use?

to turn perspective for a second by 180°:
Why do you want to switch to a new editor anyhow?
    • iM-a never did discs - that was iDVDs job = no big change in your workflow
    • iDVD is still working, and aside obsolete, complex and $$$$ DVDSP (part of obsolete FC/p) or Encore (part of Adobes CC rent package) your only option left to create disks on MacOS is indeed iDVD (...ok, there's Toast and Burn and some weird 'shareware'-stuff...)..
    • iMovie-b supports the new HDef formats (AVCHD) - you mentioned converters and DVDs = no HDef in use, in your habitat, correct?
    • if you don't need FCPX' bling-bling (I can't imagine that ) - why not using FCPX-lite = iMovie? 15$ ...
    • chapters could be done in iDVD - just to mention that ............
    • AP and FCPX are following very different concepts in usage - my personal preference is 200% on FCPX, … I was one of the loudest nay-sayers, when iM08 araised, meanwhile, FCPX is my dream!! AP (tested it) is way too complex, crowded, 'optionalized' and did I mention 'complex' for me. A bit like Windows vs. MacOS: 'everything goes' (incl. getting lost) vs. 'convenience' (incl. restrictions) ... After 2y of practice, I'm editing my weekly hobby-projects with 6-cam-Multicam, incl. tons of  custom graphics, slow-mow, effects (soccer games) in less than 2h ... awesome!
    summary:
    • why switching?
    • use iMovie10 + iDVD
    • Premiere (or Premiere Elements!) and FCPX are both avail as fee trial ... test  it - but you need iDVD anyhow
    • 'disks'  is a dwindling niché, for years!- consider to switch to 'other' distribution options
... what are 'chapters' anyhow??... (kid din'!)
