T530 Default Partitions... Safe to Delete?

I've got a 2 year old T530 with regular 320GB HDD (not SSD) which came with Win8 preinstalled. When I received the laptop, I created the Win8 recovery USB stick and installed Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon alongside Windows 8.
Now, two years later, I've never used the Windows 8 installation and I'd like to get rid of it and install Mint 17 or Crunchbang linux, or both, and once that's done I'll remove the Mint 14 installation since it's at End Of Life in terms of patches and updates.
My initial question is regarding the Lenovo default partitions which are still on the drive. In the Linux Mint 'Disks' utility I've got the following partitions on the drive, reading from left to right:
Unlabeled /dev/sda5 1MB Type Unknown Contents Unknown
WINRE_DRV /dev/sda1 1GB System Recovery NTFS In Use: No
SYSTEM_DRV /dev/sda2 273MB EFI System Fat32 In Use: No
Unlabeled /dev/sda3 134MB MS Reserved Contents Unknown
Windows8_OS /dev/sda4 129GB Basic Data NTFS In Use: No
Unlabeled /dev/sda6 200MB Basic Data EXT4 /boot
Unlabeled /dev/sda7 18GB Basic Data EXT4 /
Unlabeled /dev/sda8 15GB Basic Data EXT4 /home
Unlabeled /dev/sda9 5GB Linux Swap swap
Storage /dev/sda10 152GB Basic Data NTFS /storage
I plan to wipe out /sda4 which is the Win8 partition, and use it for a new linux installation. However, what about partitions /sda1, /sda2, /sda3, and /sda5 in light of the two scenarios below:
Scenario 1: No intention of ever again using Windows 8 on this laptop...
Which partitions can I wipe out without damaging my ability to boot the laptop at all?
Scenario 2: I *might* want to eventually restore Windows 8 to the laptop
Which partitions can I wipe out now, to use for linux now, but possibly recovering Windows later (unlikely, but I'd like to know so that I understand the implications a little better).
Separate general question:
Do I need to keep the EFI System partition if I no longer have any intention of keeping Windows 8 on the machine? I'm worried that if I wipe it out the system will be unbootable even if I no longer have Windows 8 on it to begin with... I'm reading as much as I can about EFI but I'm still unclear whether that partition is necessary or can be safely wiped.
Thanks for any help and insight you can provide!
mins.

Regarding partitions on Lenovo preloaded win8 systems read this message with helpful links and explanations http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/New-G580-has-seven-partitions-Help-identify/m-... and the message #8 if you want to remove several partitions.
sda1...sda4 partitions are the same as 1...4 ones on standard Lenovo systems and in message above.
sda5 partition doesn't belong win8. Seems it's just unallocated area. I'm sure it could be removed.
Keep in mind usually System_DRV has active and boot attributes. In your case you have another such boot partition, definitely windows bootloader is replaced. It means you are not able to boot into the recovery area. Aren't you? So if you'll decide to recover win8 w/o external recovery media you'll are not able to perform that.
Also Lenovo recovery media should (!) allow to restore laptop to its factory condition with all partitions and attributes. Antire drive will be wiped. So to ensure try to perform the recovery on another drive and remove every win8 partition on your current primary drive w/o troubles.
Regarding EFI (and GPT partionoing scheme you have now) it's not easy to switch them to BIOS mode and MBR. No problem to return EFI/GPT settings when you'll decide to perform win8 recovery in the future.

  • Installing clean Win 8.1 on X1- is it safe to delete all partitions first?

I have created a Windows 8.1 installation USB drive using the Microsoft tool and am going to install it on my X1 (gen 2), but wanted to check if it's safe to delete all 6 partitions on the drive using the installation and let the Windows installer recreate the required Microsoft reserved partition?
The first 1000MB partition is the one I am concerned about- should I leave that alone? I can't fine any confirmed details about what it's used for.
I have created a Lenovo recovery drive as well in case it goes wrong.
    Thanks!

If everything is on your computer, as it should be, then you are safe.
    Not sure what you want.
Your iphone simply mirros the selected content of your computer.  If all of your content is on your computer, then it will be on your iphone.

  • In iPhoto '11, is it safe to delete aliases in the masters folder?

I'm running the latest update of iPhoto '11.
I'm trying to do some house cleaning and I'm discovering many duplicates of photos because I used to have iphoto copy pictures into the library.
So, I'm getting rid of duplicates, and I keep coming across these folders which have aliases to the original picture (not in the library).
I've noticed that some of these aliases are pointing to pictures that are no longer there (i.e. I deleted them a long time ago).  So I was wondering if it's safe to delete the aliases.
I've noticed that any photos added in '11 dont actually have aliases.  Only the photos added in prior versions.
On a similar note, if it's not safe to delete the aliases, then if I did delete them, would they be recreated somehow? (like, if i rebuild the library database by pressing "command" and "option" on iphoto launch....or something).
Just curious so I can continue my house cleaning.
    Thanks in advance.

It's impossible to say whether it's safe to delete those aliases or not. What you're doing is simply not supported.
There are two possible uses for aliases in an 11 Library. One is linking up the old Library to the new structure. The other is to track referenced files. So, good luck with that.
I'm sure you've thought this decision through but for the benefit of others who may be thinking of this:
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You're worried about accessing the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Which HDD partitions can be deleted after migration to SSD (Win8)

    Hi everybody,
I have bought a Intel SSD 525 mSATA for my new T530 and have already installed it succesfully. With the Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12  I have migrated the Windows 8 OS to the new SSD. Everything works fine with the SSD and I want to clean up the partitions on the HDD now.
My problem is that I don´t know which partitions belongs to the preload/receovery and should stay on the drive.
    HDD:
    1. WINRE_DRV -               NTFS (OEM-/ Servicepartition)      1000MB
    2. SYSTEM_DRV -           (OEM-/ Servicepartition)                  260MB
    3. Local Drive -                 unknown                                             128MB
    4. Windows8_OS [D:]  -  NTFS                                                     447,2GB
    5. Lenovo_Recovery -     NTFS (OEM-/ Servicepartition)       17,1GB
Which partitions can be deleted without damaging the preload/recovery function.
Could anybody help me with this question ?
    Thanks a lot

Yes. The SSD is my new boot drive. These two partitions are on the SSD now.
    SDD:
    SYSTEM_DRV -           (OEM-/ Servicepartition)        260MB
    Windows8_OS [C:]-   NTFS                                         111,5GB
The HDD should be my storage Drive. Thats right.
But the preload/recovery partitions remains on the HDD. I have created a USB recovery media according to this instruction (http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024). The recovery partition should be on the USB flash drive now.
I want to remain the recovery partition on HDD to have a second copy, if something happen to the USB flash drive.
    HDD:
    1. WINRE_DRV -               NTFS (OEM-/ Servicepartition)      1000MB
    2. SYSTEM_DRV -           (OEM-/ Servicepartition)                  260MB
    3. Local Drive -                 unknown                                             128MB
    4. Windows8_OS [D:]  -  NTFS                                                     447,2GB
    5. Lenovo_Recovery -     NTFS (OEM-/ Servicepartition)       17,1GB
Is only number 5 the recovery partition or are 1 ,2 ,3 linked to it ?

  • Default Partition

    I did a mistake.
    I have removed default partition.
Now when registering new phones there is not this template anymore.
Does anybody know how to restore default partition and how to associate it to registration of new phones ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Rosa

I'm totally lost here, first, the partitions is not even in the list when you browse CUCM, and if you somehow managed to delete it, it's far away from being a mistake.
I think you can only delete that one via CLI, and you shouldn't be even messing around with the DB that way.
And I'm not sure what link you're talking about.
If it's the one I have in my signature, you need to be a partner to access it.

  • Safe to delete file from Time Machine hard drive?

Is it safe to delete a file from an external hard drive that's being used for Time Machine backups? The file is not a backup -- it's a .dmg from the manufacturer of the hard drive. Other than that one file, I don't use the drive for anything other than Time Machine.
I'm just concerned because I don't want deleting the file to affect Time Machine in any way.
    Thank you.

I have done it without issue.

  • If all the photos from my iPhone 4s Camera Roll show up in iPhoto under Library- Photos, is it safe to delete them from the iPhone and not risk losing them?

I am getting messages about being out of space on my phone for taking any more photos. I am scared to delete anything with all the photo stream and syncing that happens cause I don't want the photo to delete in many places at the same time.
So, 1) when is it safe to delete from the iPhone? 2) I feel like I have multiple copies of photos stored between the phone, Photos Library in iPhoto and all my albums in iPhoto. Is there a best practice document on how to manage your photos for space savings?
I've looked, but can't find my answer clearly in the forums.

IF you have successfully imported your pictures to your Mac http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083  then it's safe to delete it from your phone.
If you want the pics back on your phone, just sync them back using itunes http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236

  • Is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library

is it safe to delete the cache file folder from library ?

As I understand it Robo doesn't really 'do' third-party
source control. We use SourceGear Vault, but really only as a
repository for the files. We can't really work concurrently because
Robo needs exclusive access to the top level project files. But it
kind of works for us, because we're on opposite sides of the globe.
I see what you're saying on the 'local' versions of (say) the
cpd files conflicting. If anyone else has an informed view, I'm all
ears. We've set it up this way ourselves - I don't know of anyone
doing the same. If someone tells me this is a bad idea, I'm happy
    to think again.
    Cheers!

  • Safe to delete content from the Temp folder under AppData?

    Hi everyone,
Is it safe to delete the contents from the Temp folder (C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Temp) in the SharePoint 2013 web front end servers?
For some reason I see around 30 GB of temp files. Came across
this blog post but in my case ULS logs are still being generated in the D drive. Not sure how those Temp files are being created. Application servers seem to be fine.
    Tried -
changing the ULS log path from D to C and back to D drive (as per the above blog post... no luck)
tried restarting the SP tracing service
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  • Safe to delete Lightroom from my internal hard drive?

    Hi
I shoot in raw and have been using Lightroom for approx 4 years, most recently Lightroom 4 and before that Lightroom 2. Lightroom is taking up a lot of disk space on my internal hard drive and my computer is not happy.
I have deleted all but a couple of backups and then copied all my Lightroom lrcat files to an external hard drive. Now, Lightroom will only open if I have that external hard drive plugged in. Great! That is what I wanted. Is now safe to delete my Lightroom files from my internal hard drive? I am not that computer savvy and I am also terrified of losing all my work.
    Thanks

Well, if you have them on a single external drive and you delete them from your internal drive, then you have only one copy left, correct? In that case you are at extreme risk of losing your one and only copy.
I worked in the disk drive industry for 30 years and have my lrcat files backed up on three hard drives and two USB sticks. Maybe I'm just paranoid but it's likely a hard drive will eventually fail. And based on experience, for some Murphy's law reason they fail most often for people who have not backed up their data.
I'll bet there is all kinds of other stuff that can be removed from your hard drive, various temporary files, log files, etc. Try a free app like CCleaner (on Windows) to see what it does.
But I would not have just one copy of my latest lrcat files in existence.

  • How to override the 'default' partition in composite.xml - urgent

    All,
    Version: 11.1.1.4
I have created a simple BPEL A which invokes another BPEL B which is deployed to 'default' partition. In the composite.xml of BPEL A I can see the WSDL location of BPEL B as *"http://localhost:7001/soa-infra/services/default/BPELB/BPELB.wsdl"*. I noticed that the name of the partition (i.e in our case its 'default') is hardcoded in the wsdl location. During deployment I want to override to other partition, how I can achieve this?
    thanks
    sen

If you want to change the partion name at run time then used Token ,value concept and define it in build.xml
    For Example
    <target name="replaceAllValues">
    <input
message="Please enter full path of the file directory:"
    addproperty="dirPath"/>
    <replace dir="${dirPath}">
    <replacefilter
    token="OldValue."
    value="Newvalue"/>
    </replace>
    </target>
Call the above target from ant build.xml before you deploying the service.

    Tarak.

  • Why does Itunes Windows download Numbers, Pages, iMovie and iPhotos in Library and I can't even open it. It is taking up space, safe to delete?

Thanks for helping me out in advance. I recently installed Itunes and figuring things out.
So I click the thing that said downloads available and the download screen started dowloading the apps below. It takes a huge amount of space in my tiny hard drive (256 GB), I clicked, double clicked, hyper-clicked and nothing really happened.
Is it safe to delete in iTunes, or windows explorer window? If I delete it would it delete it from my iPhone? Pardon for my newbness..

    Hello traderjohn,
You can absolutely delete those apps within iTunes. If you ever need to download them back in you can do that as well. It should not affect anything on your iPhone and when you sync your iPhone. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Is it safe to delete iTunes media that is no longer available in the iTunes Store?

There is a support document that states it is OK to delete content locally so long as the content is available in the cloud depending on your geographic location.  As I'm in the US all media types are available.  From the document:
You can delete items that you bought from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store from your iOS device, Mac, or PC. Because Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation) plays content from the cloud, you don't need to delete items from your Apple TV.
Before you delete an item, make sure you can download it again. If you can't or need to pay to download it again, back up the item before you delete it.
What I am still not clear on is if it is also safe to delete content that is no longer available in the iTunes store?  Will it still be available for previous purchases?
I prefer the quality and off-line availability of iTunes media over Google Play but I've had issues recovering deleted media in iTunes in the past and so have less anxiety about the security of my purchases on Google Play versus iTunes.  Can someone confirm if items no longer available for sale in iTunes are or are not still available via the cloud?

Thanks for the reply although I'm not too happy to hear it.  What's awesome about the cloud is no longer having to keep up with any physical media.  The promise of that is realized with everything else (my work, music, books) besides movies and TV.
I wonder how Google Play will handle movies/tv that becomes unavailable?  Google Play does allow you to download media in some circumstances (on Android and iOS) but is generally intended  for streaming.  Maybe relying on a physical copy as I do with iTunes should make me more comfortable with it and not less.
I will come back to mark your reply as the solution as it becomes clear there is not a contrary position.  Thank you.

  • Windows 8.1 - safe to delete "Browser Choice"?

    Windows 8.1
The European Union ordered Microsoft to include a program in the Windows OS sold in Europe. This program makes a pop up
to invite PC users to use browsers different than Internet explorer.
This is not a malware or adware issue.
    This obligation has expired.
The main program is in C:Windows/system32 directory
While the obligation was in force, it was believed that deleting the file would cause problems with future windows updates.
Is t safe to delete the program now?
The most reassuring would be to get a reply from Microsoft staff clearly saying whether deleting all the "browser choice" files would not cause any problems including for future updates etc, or even that an uninstaller has been prepared for this
    case.

Kindly go through the workarounds as suggested in the following thread of discussions:
