T530 manufacturing flaw causes thinklight to turn on when pressing on controls

I've noticed an interesting issue with my custom built T530. I first noticed it when I pressed and held the volume up button. When pressed hard enough, the Thinklight turns on. Upon further investigation, I found that I didn't have to press the button at all, it was just pushing down the corner of button panel on the top left.
This wouldn't be such an issue, except that sometimes when the laptop is closed, this area is pressed enough to turn on the light. It gets stuck and the light stays on even when the lid is re-opened. This can easily drain the battery when traveling and reduce the lifetime of the light.
This doesn't happen when the laptop is off, but does happen when it's on, sleeping or hibernating.
I've made a video demonstrating it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beuMKDJn4b8
I suppose it’s some kind of short, so it does kind of worry me to think what else might be shorting out and if the light might eventually be on (or off) indefinitely.
Anyone else experiencing this? What can I do to get it fixed? I'd hate to have to send it back for repairs as I imagine that could take a few weeks.

Hi, BobHowdy
Sorry to hear you're having this issue. Unfortunately, as this a hardware issue that will likely need to be fixed by opening the computer and checking the wiring, the only way to fix this and stay in warranty is likely to send it in. If you'd like, you can private message me your serial number and I can look up the options that are available to you.
Best,
Adam

  • N95-1 turns off when press any key

I was using normally the phone when suddenly it turned off, I thought was the battery but it's go, I tried other battery with the same result. I turn on the phone, and when I press any key it turns off. If the keyboard keeps locked the displays says yeah unlock the keys, but when i unlocked and press any button it's turns off, I made the hard reset trick, but this couldn't solve the problem, help me please

I have the exact same problem with my Nokia Luna 8600, turns on normally, but as soon as I press any key, it turns off and changing battery nor formatting didnt help.
    Any ideas?

  • Powerbook turns off when pressing right corner.

I've been a tad (really) rough with my powerbook... The hard drive failed about a year ago so I just unbolted the thing and replaced the HD with something cheap and temp (the bracket doesn't even mount properly on the HD, so it's loose in the PB). When I put everything together, everything works
Months later.. The battery died... No biggy, I'll just keep it plugged in.... Days later I tripped on the power cord and it dropped 4 feet onto concrete... No biggy, it fell worse.... Turns out it was a biggy... :/
After that day, everytime I put a little pressure on right corner of my laptop (i.e. me resting my hand)... the laptop cuts off... but the screen stays on (black screen).
    Any help?

My first idea is that something is broken and/or loose in that area of the PowerBook. When you say the screen is on, but black, do you mean the backlight is still on?
Secondly, that area is precisely over the battery. I imagine it's a power-related issue — if not total power failure, an interruption to important areas.

  • HS-950 Manufacturing flaw?

    Hello,
I bought myself a pair of HS-950 Gaming Headset's yesterday and already I'm starting to regret it..
Everything was fine for a while but today my sounds went robotic, as in the frequency went low and finally robot-like. They stayed like that for a few minutes and then went off alltogether. I then connected the headset to another USB port, and they worked (well.. apart from the mic.). I've read from a few forums that many people have had the same problem.
Is this a manufacturing flaw, what am I supposed to do with this?

    Hello Snaerdi,
    Welcome to Creative forums!
Update the headset's firmware and driver. If the link for some reason will not work, please go to the support site and download the driver released on March 3, 2009 and firmware released on October 15, 2008 for HS-950.

  • Kernel Panic: You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again.

I apologize for writing a book, but I think explaining the full story may possibly get me a correct answer.  I hope that someone can give me some insight as to what is the problem with my MacBook Pro.  I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008), model identifier: MacBookPro4,1 running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 6 GB memory.  My wife first noticed a problem with the display.  Every so often it would get fuzzy with jumping lines going across the screen making it vitually unviewable.  The final time that incident took place the computer froze which required holding down the power button to restart the computer.  The computer started up to the point of the Apple logo and the spinning gear for quite some time until the screen darkened from top to bottom displaying the following message in five different languages: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again."  I have read other blogs and support communities where people get the message intermittently, but my computer would not go past that point no matter what.  Through research and the Apple Store I was told that this is a Kernel Panic.  The so called "Apple Genius" at the local Apple Store was unable to get the computer to boot past that point even with his gadget.  It would not startup in recovery mode, safe mode or off of a disc.  I forget exacty what he told me, but he said it was getting past the first two startup steps, but it would not get past the third step which is to mount the desktop.  He guessed that it may be a problem with the hard drive; a loose wire or something or other.  I disconnected the hard drive completely and took it out.  Everything appered to be connected properly.  Then I installed it back correctly, but it did not solve the issue.  So I guess I disproved his theory of a loose wire...  I purchased ProSoft Data Rescue 3 and connected my MacBook Pro to another Apple computer using a firewire 400 cable.  I was able to get everything I needed off of the hard drive.  I did some more research and I decided to restart the MacBook Pro in verbose mode (holding down the command button and V button).  The computer magically started up!!!  I was upset that I wasted my money on the ProSoft Data Rescue 3.  I managed to take additional items off of the computer and back it up on to an external hard drive.  After some time the computer froze.  I repeated the power button process to restart and received the same kernel panic.  I managed to get the computer to startup approximately six or seven more times via verbose mode; each time the computer staying on for a shorter amount of time before it would freeze.  I managed to run Disk Utitlity.  I performed first aid to fix the hard drive and it said that the hard drive appeared to be fine.  After first aid I erased the hard drive and booted off of a Lion disc to perform a clean install or an erase and install.  Lion installed until the progress bar got the the end where I received a message that there was an error installing Lion, please try again.  Each time I attempted to install the software I would receive the same message.  Eventually the computer would not boot from the Lion disc.  I went back to the Apple Store and the Apple Genius was able to get the computer to boot off of his gadget where Lion istalled completely.  I set up the computer as a new computer.  He said that he partitioned the hard drive as DOS and then back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would get rid of any errors the drive may have had.  He guessed that the problem was the hard drive, but was not exactly sure.  When I brought it home I installed all of the software applications I had on it previously.  Approximately three days later, which may have been the fifth of sixth time starting up the computer, the display became fuzzy again and the computer froze.  The computer did restart once and I was able to retreive a "log" which I have pasted below.  After if froze for the second time it restarted once using verbose mode and froze almost immediately.  After holding down the power key to shut it down and then restart; I received the same kernel panic after the Apple logo and spinning gear which put me right back to square one.  Now the computer will not boot via any method.  It freezes at the end of verbose mode which forces you to hold down the power button to shut down.  I also read that poorly seated ram may cause this issue, but I removed and installed the ram multiple times.  I even purchased new ram from Other World Computing (Mac Sales) 6 GB, but that did not make a difference.  I think I may see six possible problems on the verbose screen mode, five errors and one warning; I will type them out here:
    1. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key $Num (kSMCKeyNotFound)
    2. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: $Num kSMCKeyNotFound(0x84) fKeyHashTable=0x0
    3. SMC: :smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap ==NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
    4. WARNING - ACPI_SMCCtrlLoop: :initCPUCtrlLoop - no sub-config match for MacBookPro4,1 with 8 p-states, using default stepper instead
    5. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key MOTP (kSMCKeyNotFound)
    6. SMC: :smcReadKeyAction ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key BEMB (kSMCKeyNotFound)
I was hoping that someone could read my log to ascertain wether or not they see a problem that stands out.  I was also hoping that someone could tell me if verbose mode provides any information that may be wrong with my computer.  I just hope that someone can give me some insight as to what may be wrong with my computer.  If it is the hard drive I will easily replace it, but I want to make sure that is the problem first before I waste money on a hard drive or anything else.  Please let me know if anyone requires any other information from me.
    Thank you!

I had already written a book and I did not want to bombard people with more information, but in my previous research I did come across the major issues with the NVIDIA card.  I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012.  I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store.  I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no.  He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime.  When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board.  I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses."  I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it.  I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds.  Again...thank you both!

  • Macbook works fine when plugged in, turns off when unplugged.

    Hello all,
As stated my 2008 Unibody 13 inch, serial number W8******1AX turns on and works fine when it is connected to power.
When it is unplugged it instantly turns off and turns its fans on full until it depletes the battery (so it is obviously getting power.. just not where I want it)
Since the problem began I have tried two new batteries, neither of which had any different symptoms.
Before this, the computer had an intermittent life, it would turn off when it saw fit, which got progressively worse.
I have followed the guides to resetting the SMC but have had no luck
I have been running it without the battery (to save it charging and discharging for no reason) and sometimes when plugged in without a battery
the magsafe green indicator light goes from dim to bright.
With the battery installed it stays bright orange until it is charged and then switches to bright green.
(I have tried it with another charger, same symptoms)

If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.
    Many thanks!!

There may be a hardware cause behind the symptoms you cite, so a diagnostic
is recommended to see which parts are weak or failed in the computer. A visit to
an Apple Store with Genius bar may be helpful, as they can perform testing there.
A call ahead or use their web page, to schedule an appointment, is advised.
In the US and Canada, the Genius bar at a retail Apple Store can perform
a diagnostic service, for no fee, even on Apple products without AppleCare.
    See links:
    Apple - Concierge
Genius Bar - Apple Retail Store:
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
List of Apple Stores, cities, countries:
    http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/
Also authorized Apple service providers who can test, repair and guarantee their
work should be able to handle an out-of-warranty older Mac, within age limits...
Ones too old for the Apple Store could be serviced at a Specialist, instead.

•Calibrating is part of maintenance, esp with older portables:
Apple Portables: Calibrating your computer's battery for best performance
•The power adapter can be problematic and cause issues, so there's this:
    Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
Also another item, other than keeping the magnetic connections clean of
debris, grime, and corrosion, is to check the MagSafe Board or have it
checked as part of a greater diagnostic. This board is behind the port
that supplies the computer and the battery with power from the adapter.
When it partially fails or if/when one of the connecting wires or plug fails
you can find odd issues or partial use. The battery may charge but it
may not be able to power the computer, and other odd effects.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook
In older portable Macs, this was generally called a 'DC-in board' and as
such, you could read about it in an iFixit repair guide for the MacBook
model you have. These vary so the matching article is recommended to
see if that is something you may want to try. But I would have diagnostic
testing done and avoid additional damages from attempted DIY efforts.
There have been a few reports of other failure on the logic board that
contributes to a partial failure of the charging system, so about all this
may do is troubleshoot around the failure without finding an exact cause.
    However it goes...
    Good luck & happy computing!

Kernel panics are usually hardware related.  Disconnect all peripherals from your computer and try the suggestions mentioned in these articles - Kernel Panics? Don't panic too!  and   "You need to restart your computer" (kernel panic) message appears (Mac OS X v10.5, 10.6)
Crashing can cause directory damage.  Therefore, you should do the following to check after resolving your kernel panic issue -
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.
    Mac OS X (10.6.4)
Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.8 and anything else that needs to be updated.  The combo update may help your situation.  Outdated os, software & hardware can cause issues with your computer.  For 3rd party items, you will need to check with the manufacturer for all updates.

So I have an iPad with the smart cover, and it's usually supposed to turn on and off the iPad when u open it and close it, but it's not turning on for me. Nor is it turning off without pressing the button. What is the meaning of this?what caused it to be this way? Is there someway that I could fix it?

Wait a sec did this just start?
You set up the smart cover function in settings (you did that, right?) so, if you did that and it's failed you make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar now.

  • Macbook Air 13 turns yellow when starting

I've recently had a replacement because my macbook air turned yellow when I start it.
It starts okay but right before it moves on to the desktop screen, it turns yellow. And it feels like the overall hue of the screen proceeds to be kind of yellow tinted.
What bugs me is that my replacement has the same problem :(
    Is this normal?
I went to the apple service center, and the guy there told me it  happens to all macbooks with the new OS X.
I'm also kind of concerned if the replacement is not a new product.
( bought it on the online apple store )

Yeah it's happening to me too.
I read from several sources, it's just Lion in general cause animation lags. It should be fixed in the next bug fix software update; don't worry, it's not just you.

  • How do I make my iPad turn off when the screen is covered?

My old iPad would turn off when I closed the cover but I cannot find how to make the iPad air turnoff in a similar fashion?

    dpna wrote:
Yes it is a proper cover
If it is an APPLE COVER, perhaps it's not the one for that model. But, if it's not an Apple cover, then maybe the manufacturer hasn't set up the magnets the way they are supposed to be.
I'm going to quote from another post elsewhere ...
Are you using a genuine Apple cover or another third party cover?
It's the magnets in the cover which activate the lock/unlock feature to appear in your settings. In earlier iPads you could slide a magnet down the side of the iPad to find where the magnet activates and turn the feature on.....Apple have now changed how this works with the iPad Air. Whereas before there was only 1 magnet positioned in the cover for earlier iPads, it is now thought there are 2 with alternating polarity.
So if you want this feature you will need to buy an Apple cover or wait for third party manufacturers to get their magnets in the correct position.
If you do have a genuine Apple cover then there is something going wrong here....

  • GX740 monitor won't turn on when lid is opened and weird HDD specs?

This is the second GX740 I have received after returning the first one due to a defective hard drive.
I have changed all the power options so that closing the lid does nothing except switch off the lid. However, when I close the lid and reopen it, the screen won't turn back on. The system itself is still on and working though (ie. cpu running, harddrives running) but its just the screen that won't turn on. The only thing I can do is hit the on/off button, which I have set to go to sleep. The funny thing is that when I hit the on/off button again and bring the pc out of sleep mode, the screen will start functioning normally (ie. when I close it and reopen it, the screen will turn on) but if I switch it off or restart it, then the monitor will not turn on when the lid is closed and opened again.
Also another very strange thing I noticed is that although my harddrive is a 320gb 7200rpm WD drive, the model number in Device manager is WD6400BEVT - which I'm guessing is the number for the 640gb drive?! This hasn't caused any problems so far but it seems very odd to me and I am just wary of complications in the future as I returned the first GX740 I got due to a defective harddrive
Also, I have updated windows 7 completely.
    Any ideas?

Please consider taking a look at this faq article: http://support.msi.eu/faq/index.php?sid=446722&lang=en&action=artikel&cat=188&id=115&artlang=en
It does seem the same issue and for that you should update the graphic drivers and VBIOS. You can find them here: http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=searchresult&keywords=GX740&table=download
Vbios is under Firmare and VGA drivers under Drivers.
    Good luck.

  • My ipod 4 fell and turned off, when i connect it appears recovery mode.

as i said, my ipod 4 fell and turned off, when i connect to my computer, it appears in recovery mode, itunes detects it and i've tried to restore with no luck, i;ve tried to hold the buttons for 10, 20, 60 seconds with no help, im wondering what can i do to get my ipod work again, i dont really mind losing the data inside, i have my backups. please help, what could this be?

This device is not eligible for the requested build (Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194")
Update to the latest version of iTunes. Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) users may need to download iTunes 10.6.3.
Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, followTroubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. Uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer.
Edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from your hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect. For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart.
Avoid using an older or modified .ipsw file. Try moving the current .ipsw file (see Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations), or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

My iPhone 5s did the same and my company sent me a new one.  That one had the same problem.  I am now being told by my company that it is an app that I have loaded that is not compatible with the IOS update.  They sent me an iPhone6 and advised me to only add my apps one at a time to see which one is causing the problem.  Verizon, I was told, has been working on the problem as well.  Don't know if all this is true but sounded right to me.

  • Yoga 13 Turns Off When Plugged In And Won't Charge

I've had my Lenovo Yoga 13 for about a year. When I plug in the laptop to charge it, it turns off and will not charge while it is off. The only way for me to turn it back on is to unplug the charger.
So I guess this is two issues in one: my computer turns off when it's plugged in and it will not charge. Do you guys think it could be caused by a bad charger or do you think it has to do with the computer? Has anyone had this happen to them?
    Thanks!

What happens is as soon as I plug in the charger the computer turns off. The battery does not charge while the charger is plugged in and I cannot turn my computer back on until I unplug the charger.
When I first noticed this behavior the battery was about 80% charged and I was able to turn the computer on and use it for multiple hours, so I don't think the battery stopped working. It wasn't until I plugged my computer in again when it was charged under 10% that I realized what had happened wasn't a one time thing; my computer turned off again. I waited about an hour before I unplugged the charger and turned my computer on again. The battery hadn't been charged at all that whole time.
