T540p - DVD/CD optical drive not found
Hi, I am trying to access my optical drive. It opens, I can insert a CD, then it obviously does something but is gets quiet after a minute or so. There is no entry in the device manager list and I can't see it in the file explorer either.
Previously, it worked at some ocasions - but caused the system to crash. Now it is completely gone. Tried to do a hardware scan using LSC but this service does not seem to be available either (tried to reboot various times).
Could anybody help?
Regards

Optical Drives Not Found/Not Working
Hello everyone,
I'm having trouble getting my optical drives working. They are both the same make and model, and they both have power (open and close) but they aren't recognized by the system. I installed Arch a couple of weeks ago, after the init scripts/systemd change, so nothing was broken there (I'm not sure if that would even have anything to do with it.
I've done some research to see if I could find any drivers/firmware, but all of things I've found are only for Windows. The optical drives do work in Windows. I have added myself to the 'optical' group, and dmesg | grep CD gives:
[ 0.630535] ata5.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SH-S162L, TS04, max UDMA/33
[ 0.630560] ata5.01: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SH-S162L, TS08, max UDMA/33
I also recall reading here that perhaps they aren't being picked up by the kernel, but I am very unclear on how to check to see what the kernel is picking up. I'm also not sure if they have ever worked under Arch and then stopped, or whether they never worked at all. I just found out earlier today when I went to burn a CD and xfburn gave a message saying that there were no burners found.
The /dev directory has no cdrom* or sr* listings at all. lshw also shows nothing about the optical drives. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.I unplugged one of the drives, but it still did not show up in /dev. I checked the systemd log and it shows the folllowing:

The one labeled "TS04" isn't there anymore, but the one that is doesn't show up in devices.
I looked into writing udev rules, and I came across this thread and created a file /etc/udev/rules.d/82-cdrom.rules:
SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="sr0", SYMLINK+="cdrom cdrw dvd dvdrw", ENV{GENERATED}=1
# permissions for IDE CD devices
SUBSYSTEMS=="ide", KERNEL=="hd[a-z]", ATTR{removable}=="1", ATTRS{media}=="cdrom*", GROUP="optical"
# permissions for SCSI CD devices
SUBSYSTEMS=="scsi", KERNEL=="s[rg][0-9]*", ATTRS{type}=="5", GROUP="optical"
That didn't do the trick, but being that I have never dealt with writing udev rules before, I'm not sure if I'm going about it the right way. -
External optical drive not found by iMac?
Just purchased an LG Mac Compatible Slim Portable DVD Writer to use with my 2011 iMac because I replaced the internal optical drive with an SSD drive. When I connect the drive via USB I get an initialization error. Any suggestions as to what might work to resolve this? I will contact LG this week but they are closed for the weekend so I thought I would ask here. Here's a pic of the error message:
Thanks.Reset the SMC > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Wait fifteen seconds.
4. Attach the computer's power cord.
5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
and NVRAM / PRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
Then if it doesn't work, return it for a replacement or different LG External DVD Drive.
Note that while they are bulkier, tray loading AC powered external drive tend to be faster and more reliable than slim USB powered units. -

DVD/CD Combo Drive Not Found
My 1.5Ghz Mini is 10 months old and has performed excellently until now ...
When I put a CD in the drive (to copy photos, as I've done many times before) the CD is apparently not recognized, since no icon appears on the desktop. I was able to get the disc out by using this forums tip to press "Command-Option-O-F" keys during start-up. I looked at System Profile and found that the Headings ATA, Diagnostics, Fibre Channel, PC Cards and Parallel SCSI all indicated "no information found". The DISC BURNING heading said "No burning device found".
I thought if I ran the "Apple Hardware Test" something magic would happen, so I loaded the Install Disc 1, but of course the mini CANNOT/WILLNOT read it and I can't seem to get it to eject yet???
Any ideas on a fix? Apple Store is a 4 hour drive away, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance!
Also, if it is a hardware failure, any thoughts on this being covered in the Standard warranty?Yakub, it should be covered by the standard warranty.
But before you resort to that, try a SMC reset: After shutting down normally, then unplug everything from the Intel mini.
Leave everything unplugged for several minutes.
Then replug the power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
Then press the power button to start up normally. -

I try to insert a DVD to play on my imc , but the disc eject out after the drive search for no disc . I click on DVD player, message as a valid DVD drive not found-70012
Sounds like a problem with the Optical Drive, I find them far too short lived in OSX anyway!???

Windows 7 install stops at "CD/DVD driver not found"
When trying to install Windows 7 with boot camp, all goes well until it stops and gives me the "CD/DVD driver not found". I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro with a 500 GB SSD drive. I have burned a DVD at 1X from a iso file.
ThanksCan you verify the MD5/SHA1 of the DVD with the ISO using OS X 'openssl md5' or the M$ FCIV tool? The source of your ISO should be able to provide MD5/SHA1.

Thanksi guess i forgot to mention in my original post that registry limits were not the problem...they dont even exist...as i did mention, i tried different fixes which included

as well as manually checking the registry and every other file mentionable my friend has not been able to find her original disk yet, so that remains untried as of date....and BTW, an usb external cd/dvd drive works just fine....but we dont want a patch, we would like to fix the problem and use the internal drive the laptop came with.... -
I have a Powerbook G4 12"--has always worked without problem.
However, this am tried to play DVD--got the error message "valid DVD drive not found". No driver seen in system profiler.
There is no CD or DVD stuck.
Have gone through the workarounds suggested in discussions--open firmware ejects etc...
Has anyone found a solution other than paying $500 to replace the drive?
Many thanksFirst see if the issue is user or system related. Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and add an administrator account, and log into it after logging out from the Apple menu.
If that doesn't work, try locating a preference in the System/Library or Hard Drive -> Library for com.apple.dvdplayer and removing it. Same for cache files.
If it still doesn't work, try VideoLan Client:

DVD/CD optical drive is recognized only occasionally and temporarily
Hi, I recently bought an ASUS Essentio desktop model CG8350 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. My DVD/CD optical drive is not consistently being recognized. I've made few changes to the computer and have even tried reinstalling Windows (system recovery, factory settings), but no luck. The curious thing is that after booting up I can occasionally temporarily see the D:\ optical drive listed under My Computer or under Device Manager, but after a few seconds or about a minute after restarting or trying to read a disk, this disappears and the optical drive is no longer shown. I would take it back to Best Buy I bought it for repair, but unfortunately that was in the U.S. and I've since moved to Canada. It's frustrating that Best Buy Canada won't honor service warranties for items bought from Best Buy U.S. If there's something I can try in order to avoid shipping it off to ASUS or back to Best Buy U.S. (at my expense, and potential loss of PC for a few weeks), I would much prefer that. These are the things I have tried so far: 1) opening it up and checking/re-plugging the power cable to the optical drive and the data cable between the optical drive and motherboard. All cables seemed fine. The drive ejects and spins a little bit when a disk is inserted, but neither a blank CD/DVD nor a commercial CD are recognised after insertion. 2) looking at the registry to try the "delete UpperFilters" and "delete LowerFilters" trick that I've seen posted several times. Since the computer had Windows 7 from the start (was not upgraded), these entries were not visible under the suggested registry subkey. 3) under boot options, I've selected "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" and have booted up. The optical drive showed up under My Computer and/or Device Manager for a few seconds or a minute, but then vanished. 4) disabled integrity checks: I've pasted "bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS" into the Run window. After restarting, the optical drive is again occasionally visible, but only for a short period after which it disappears. 5) following a tip on one website, I tried shutting off and unplugging the data cable between optical drive & motherboard, restarting the computer so Windows could "see" there was actually no optical drive connected, then shutting off and connecting the data cable again and restarting. no luck. 6) I've run the Microsoft Support Fixit executable under "Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media". The first time I ran this, it ran for about 5-10 minutes, but didn't diagnose a problem. The second time I tried to run it (after the Windows 7 re-install), is said my CD/DVD drive was not detected, so didn't run. 7) I've tried built-in Windows diagnostics and ASUS diagnostics, but they didn't help much. 8) I've updated ny BIOS to the most recent version. I've now run out of ideas and can't find any other suggestions on previous troubleshooting searches. The observation of the drive occasionally being seen for a few seconds/minute after start-up before disappearing seems like it might be a good clue, but I'm not sure how to interpret this. I did get it to play an audio CD a couple hours ago, but after trying to use my drive for something else after that, it's right back into the situation of not being consistently recognized, except sometimes immediately after booting up and then only for a short period. Any help or suggestions you have will be very very welcome -- thank you.
Honestly since it was recalled due to the sandy bridge recall anyways, it is going to have to go to asus eventually so I would just have them fix both in one shot. The Canada and U.S. support number is the same and I'm sure they could fix both issues at once to save you time: 1-866-625-9873

My roommate gave me an old iPod Mini a few days ago. It was working fine 'til I plugged it into my computer and it asked me to format it. I did, and now it cannot be recognized by iTunes or my computer. My computer views it as a "removable disk" which cannot be accessed. In devices, it is listed as an Apple iPod though, so I'm hoping not all is lost. I have tried many quick fixes I've read on internet (including changing disk letter) but to no avail. I have reinstalled the new iTunes and now that is telling me it has not installed properly, and when I ran diagnostics, it reads that the Apple Mobile Device Driver not found. I will copy & paste all the info from the diagnostic run below, and if anybody can help me with my new (old) iPod, I'd be everly greatful!

What i knew about iPhone before buying it:
What You Need
To use iPhone, you need:
A new two-year wireless service plan with AT&T
A Mac or a PC with a USB 2.0 port and one of the following operating systems:
Mac OS X version10.4.10 or later
Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition
iTunes 7.3 or later, available at www.itunes.com
An iTunes Store account
An Internet connection
You must be at least 18 years old to open a new AT&T wireless account. You will need a
major credit card to open a new iTunes Store account.
Yeahyeah check all that stuff;
Oh well; just when i thought i'd finally cross over to the beautiful packaging of APPLE. I remember in design school that form follows function. Thanks.
Windows Vista -
Apple just replaced my hard drive and now I'm noticing that I have no sound coming out of my internal speakers or earphone jack. When I try to use garage band I get the following error message:
Core Audio:
Selected Driver not found (-10202)
I read their article on the subject; I go to system preferences, sound then output devices where I'm supposed to select my device except there are none listed. I tried to fix the problem by reinstalling the operating system using the CD's that came with the MacBook Air but that didn't work either.
Here's the other problem, when I download the software update the update never loads. The status bar just sits there even when I let my pc alone over night.
Any suggestions??
FYI, i can't easily walk into a mac store for assistance.. gotta catch a plane to a different island.Update your Apogee and Symphony drivers to Mountain Lion versions...
But the bigger question is.. How did you install Mountain Lion on a G5? -
Drive not found in library database
Greetings.
I'm new to OSB and am having tape drive, volume problems.
File system backups only complete successfully when drive (IBM4_0_0_1_1) is used. When OSB attempts to use other drives in the library it logs the following errors listed in "Transcript".
I'm running OSB (10.4.0.3.0) on a Linux server (Oracle Linux Server release 6.0) with a SL500 library controller by a ACSLS(8.3.0) server.
Please advise.

Thanks for your response.
ACSLS is part of the configuration requirements I need to have in this OBS environment.
I'm going to re install OBS just to see if anything changes.
Thanks again.
Update:
When configuring devices in OSB that are ACSLS in nature it is a requirement to restart the obacslibd after mkdev or certain chdev commands are preformed.
After the daemon was restarted I was able to use the attached tape drives.
