T550 Switching graphic cards on windows 7 Ultimate

I've googled around and found that you switch Graphic cards with this green battery icon at the bottom right
i cannot find this icon, a similar icon does not allow me to switch the cards, devices only show a standard graphics card, not the more powerful one
My friend installed the OS for me, is there a way i can switch cards?
Windows 7 Ultimate
Lenovo Y550 ideapad (black and orange one)
is there something i have to install? Thankyou very much

Hey don't give up yet. Sounds like video drivers are not installed on your ideapad. First identify which video card your system has:- http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers.html
Then go to proceeding link to download driver for it:-

Hope it helps.

  • Installation of ATI driver for Radeon X1300, X1400, V5200 graphic cards on Windows 8.1

Dear Thinkpad users. After many failures and zero support from official resources, this is a comprehensive, unbiased installation procedure for the official ATI driver with Catalyst Control Center for Radeon X1300, X1400, V5200 graphic cards on Windows 8.1. In my experience, the latest driver for these cards written for Windows Vista 32-/64-bit works flawlessly on Windows 8.1 and you will benefit from multi-monitor support, full HW-acceleration and the PowerPlay option in Catalyst Control Center as well. Install only the official ATI driver, no other modification required. (The installation may work also on non-Thinkpad systems, such as Dell etc. but I have not tested it on that systems)
    Installation procedure:
    1. Before installation, ensure you are logged as an administrator
    2. Go to ‘Control Panel’ -> ‘Power Options’ and click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’ option from the list on the left side of the window
    3. Go to ‘Shut-down settings’ on the bottom and disable ‘Turn on fast start-up (recommended)’. Unchecking that checkbox is very important because it will prevent the problem with start-up black screen on the computer.
    4. Go to ‘Control Panel’ again and choose ‘Programs and Features’, then click on ‘Turn Windows features on or off’
    5. Select the checkbox ‘.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) to turn it on and wait until the installation is completed
    6. Go to Windows update and install all important updates including those for ‘.NET Framework 3.5 as well
    7. Download ATI video driver from the website of your hardware vendor. For Lenovo Thinkpad T60, T60p users the latest ATI video driver is for Windows Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), please visit http://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t60... and download the driver
    8. Once you have the driver downloaded right-click on the file and choose ‘Properties’ from the drop-down menu.
    9. Click on ‘Compatibility’ card then ‘Change settings for all users’ and check in the checkbox at ‘Compatibility mode’ with the option for Windows Vista as well as at ‘Run this program as an administrator’
    10. Double left-click and install the program.
    11. Go to the location ‘C:\drivers\WIN\VIDEO and open the file ‘Bin’ (for Windows 8.1 32-bit users) or ‘Bin64’ (for Windows 8.1 64-bit users)
    12. Right click on ‘Setup’ file; choose ‘Properties’ from the drop-down menu and repeat the step 9
    13. Once you have set the properties, double left-click on that file and install the driver
    14. Follow the installation instructions and finish the installation
    15. Restart the computer
    cheers

  • Premiere Elements 9 crashes with multiple NVIDIA graphics cards under Windows 7

I've just installed Premiere Elements 9 and found that it will not run at all with multiple NVIDIA graphics cards active under Windows 7.  Per all the other discussions, I updated the NVIDIA drivers and Quicktime support to the latest versions.  (NVIDIA version 260.99).  I have both a 9400 GT and an 8400 GS installed, to support multiple monitors.  They both use the same driver.  The PRE 9 organizer will run, but as soon as I create or load a project it quickly crashes.
On a long shot I disabled the 8400 GS card in the Device Manager and now I can run PRE 9.  Of course this means giving up one of my monitors.  Any other ideas?

Over in the Premiere Pro area (or maybe it was in the Hardware section... didn't pay a lot of attention 'cause it really didn't matter to me) I read a message about using two nVidia cards with no problems (other than no dual-card SLI support)
I **think** that was with two SAME model nVidia cards
And, of course, PPro is completely different code, so PreEl may simply not work with two nVidia cards

  • Problems with graphics card with Windows 8 bootcamp on new imac

I just purchased a new 2013 imac (27inch, with the nvidia geforce gtx 680mx 2gb).
I partitioned the drive using bootcamp and successfully installed windows 8 pro 64bit as well as the support softward from Apple for the drivers.
My problem is that the display in windows says it is being run by a Microsoft basic display adapter and only using 256mb of memory and doesn't seem to be an Nvidia card at all, let alone the 2gb of video memory I am supposed to have.
I have tried downloading drivers directly from Nvidia, but when I run them it says I don't have compatible hardware.
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this issue.
    Please help.

After I read other discussions on the same topic, I found out that the problem is that when you install the drivers via the Bootcamp "windows support software" USB key, for some reason the NVIDIA drivers are not installed, although they are present in the Bootcamp folder.
How I solved the issue: Starting from the Peripherals Manager window (the one that shows all what is inside your machine), I opened the Graphic card "folder" and double-clicked on the "VGA standard card" line.
Then I clicked on a "install driver" button, browse through files, and selected the NVIDIA folder within the Bootcamp folder on the USB key.
It took some time but after that it had fully recognized the GTX 680 MX card.
I rebooted and the system itself set up to the 2560 x 1440 resolution.

  • MacBook Pro will not boot after switching graphics cards

    Dear All,
I have a late-2008 unibody MacBook Pro. I have had it since April 2009, and I have not encountered any real problems with it.
Yesterday, I switched to the 9600 graphics card for the first time since purchasing the machine. It logged me out as expected, but then proceeded to flash a blank blue screen at me for 20 minutes. Assuming that this was not normal, I powered down the computer by holding the power button. I powered it on again, and it will not get past the Apple symbol screen with the loading whirligig. I left it on for seven hours (overnight), and no change.
I booted it from the install disc and ran the Disk Utility verify and repair. It either gives me no problem or a block count error, which goes away when I run repair. I tried running verify on permissions, but this gives me a "failed to exit" or some such error, same with repair permissions. Restarting gives me the same apple logo screen until forever.
I've tried resetting PRAM, doing the battery removal and holding power button for 5 seconds, I've tried booting in safe mode (it won't), and doing an archive and install (which it can't do either, as it can't access my HDD or something). I've run the disk utility verify and repair several times.
I unfortunately don't have a recent backup (slapping myself), so I'm open to suggestions before going into despair over my $2600 paperweight before doing an erase and install...
    Thanks in advance!
PS: is there a way to open the computer in target disk mode via the install cd so that I CAN back it up?
    Message was edited by: Kaklz

Thanks, Joe. That may be an option if all else fails. I don't currently own an enclosure, so I am looking for an alternative before spending any money (I know, "frugal Apple user" is unheard of, but...).
I do have an old G3 tower, which I am using in the meantime, so if I can use this to open my MBP in target disk mode (or some other way of making a backup), I'd be overjoyed!

  • W500 switching graphics card

Hi, so on my w500 laptop specs, it says that it has 512 MB ATI Mobility FireGL V5700 graphics card that is switchable to Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500 MHD. I want to switch to the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator but I can't seem to figure out how to do it- I was told it was easy, but I'm not having much luck. If anyone could help me, that would be awesome, thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Which OS are you using? The switchable feature only works in Win Vista and 7.
    Maybe this will help:-
"How do I tell the system to switch my graphics adapter?
To switch graphics adapters, left-click on the ThinkVantage Power Managerbattery icon in the system notification area. At the bottom of the pop-up menu there will be a Switchable Graphics sub-menu.
Note: Changing ThinkVantage Power Manager from Basic mode (default) to Advanced mode will cause the menu to look different. The menu will no longer be transparent and the slider is replaced with a list of schemes. The Switchable Graphics sub-menu is still at the bottom."

  • Switching graphics card when on battery

I have a W540 with the nvidia K1100M graphics card. I'm trying to configure my laptop so that when I'm running on battery power, ALL programs use the integrated graphics adapter. When I'm plugged to AC in I'd like ALL programs to use the nvidia card.
I've looked into the nvidia optimus program, but it seems like it has a different card selection philosophy that isn't quite what I'm after.
Is there a way I can achieve this? It seems like a very straightforward config.
    Thanks!

True, but you'd still have to restart all of your existing processes. Worse, if something like DWM ends up on discrete, you'd be stuck with high power consumption until you stop and restart it.
If the caveats are acceptable, you can probably script switching between "Auto-select graphics processor" and "Integrated only" as found in the NVIDIA Control Panel and set the program list according to AC power conditions. You'd also probably bypass the NVIDIA Control Panel itself and toggle the setting in the registry directly (don't know if it's actually in the registry) or using a CLI tool (don't know of one).

Thank you for replying. I had no idea I had a response. It is a Windows 7 Home Premium. The game is actually now a few different ones for my child, Baby Luv, Brave & Disney Princesses. None of them will work. I have an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 graphics card in this (Compaq Presario All-In-One Desktop PC) and I just posted another question in the forum about wanting to know if I can replace the grahics card with a HD card and if so how? I have looked online but can't find an answer. Is it possible to replace the card or with it being an all-in-one is it not possible? Thank you.

  • Crashing with Skitch, Snapz Pro, Fast User Switching - graphics card issue?

Noticed this issue when I switched back to a G5 from a Mac Pro.
Clean install of the OS and apps but Skitch locked the machine when accessing prefs etc. in the app. Then discovered Snapz Pro locked the machine when attempting to screen grab. Now, after creating a new user account and activating Fast User Switching the machine locks when switching to the new user.
Could this be an Open GL or Quartz Extreme issue? Ran Xbench and everything went fine. Normal day to day use of the machine is sound.
System Profiler tells me this about the graphics card:
    *ATI Radeon X800 XT:*
    Chipset Model: ATY,R420
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x4a48
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A35801-109
I just flashed the ROM to 109 (from 108) today, but still have the issue.
    Thoughts?

    Malcom,
If I turn it off, then I lose the ability to jump between users without having to kill everything I'm doing. Yes, that does solve the problem, but only because it removes the cause of the problem. I'm trying to find a solution to the issue.

I was told that I need a PCI card ...
I have located this board at VisionTek ... their customer service told me to make sure that the motherboard will work with this ...
Will this board work ?  and are there other boards out there that would also work ?
    Thanks ...

    View Solution.

Lets start out with that is an antique system with limited options because it only has PCI slots and no normal video card.  The card you are asking about does have "High Definition 3D Performance & Image Quality to Your PC"  If you are considering getting one, try the EBay market as this is really old hardware and you can get one for near nothing.  For Example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Visiontek-Radeon-X1300-Graphics-Card-256MB-128bit-900106-/191175474229
Just make sure the one ordered is the PCI version.
There are other possible choices: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187213

  • Install Win7 with no Lenovo software - still switch graphics cards?

I'm thinking of wiping our T500 and installing Win7 Pro without any Lenovo software.  Will I still be able to switch between the dual graphics cards (discrete/onboard)? And I assume the special key combinations won't work anymore? Thanks

As long as you install the necessary drivers and software components from the T500 driver matrix, it should be fully functional. That said, you won't benefit from the Enhanced Experience of the Lenovo preload.

  • No display switched graphics card

So at work I've used two different towers--a 2007 Mac Pro, and lately a 2009 Mac Pro tower. I made the switch because the 07, while generally decently fast, was having some harddrive errors and making me a bit nervous about how long it would last.
The ideal swap was to move my user to the 2009 tower, which has better specs in most everything BUT graphics card--and then swap the graphics cards. The 2007 had a ATI Radeon x1920 xt and the 2009 came with a Nvidia GeForce GT120.
My coworker and I swapped the graphics cards and put the Radeon in the 2009 and the Nvidia in the 2007 and booted both machines--but neither had a display. The machines booted up, just... black, no display connection at all. We switched back to make sure we hadn't broken anything--worked just fine.
The 2009 machine already had drivers for both brands--Nvidia and ATI. I tried researching online but the general consensus among the Apple crowd is that the machine should already have the drivers, and at least display should be a given?
Seems like this is a simple problem! I must be missing a really basic step, simply because I've not done it before, don't know the process, and can't find a specific tutorial online.
Also, the Radeon required an additional power source, but it was plugged in. I can't think of anything to troubleshoot beyond this, I really don't know enough.

The card you mentioned (Radeon X1920) is not offically supported on any model Mac Pro:
Mac Pro (all models): Graphics card compatibility between models
If you mean the X1900, that does not support 64-bit kernel, so it will not work in 2008 and later models.
