T60 (2007FUG) upgrade

Hello guys,
I am about to upgrade my T60 (2007FUG) with new high-capacity and quick hard drive and maximum memory to install bothFreeBSD and Debian GNU\Linux to use them in turn with Windows XP Pro preinstalled in my development and scientificactivity. I have several questions to experienced IT specialists in this matter.
Question 1. Which HD is the best choice in point of maximum capacity, performance and compatibility?
I have thought to install Seagate Momentus XT 750 Mb (Seagate ST750LX003) but after reading several posts here it seemsquite incompatible with ThinkPad T60.
Question 2. What RAM is the best choise? Is it possible to use more than 4 Mb of RAM?
I have selected pair of modules with radiators (G.skill F2-5300CL5D-4GBSA). Is it reasonable? I wonder can I use 800 MHzmodules instead of 667 MHz ones and what are the consequences of that?
Can somebody help me do right choice?
Please share your experience and/or knowledge to help me achieve the best results.
I will appreciate any help in this matter.
Thanks!

I don't understand what you mean by "ram with radiators", perhaps it's a poor translation but the only thing I can think of that you could be referring to is ram modules that have integrated heatsinks. These are only available for desktop ram (as far as I know). The part number you provided is for a normal ram module that should work fine in your system.
When purchasing your ram, also consider what ram you already own. If you have a 1gb chip installed already, then I'd recommend adding a single 2gb chip rather then buying two. It will (obviously) only cost you half as much and you'll have the same amount of useable ram. The fact that it cannot operate in dual channel won't really make any noticeable difference, at least not enough to warrant spending twice as much money, but as George points out, the ram is pretty cheap so it depends on your finances. In my location a 2gb ram chip sells for $15-20 each, but prices vary in different parts of the world.
If your current ram is in chips smaller then 1gb, then you'll need to purchase two chips, so you might as well get two 2gb chips.
You need to weigh the costs vs. benefits and make a decision based on your own finances.

  • Z60m / T60 HDD upgrade

    Hello all
I have offered to upgrade the HDD in a used T60 purchased by a friend for their son, on my advice. The HDD is only 40GB and his sister has a 500GB HDD on her new laptop, imagine how he feels!
I have been putting it off for a while because of the cost of drives from IBM, which I assumed had to be used. Reading that it is possible to upgrade using HDDs bought from elsewhere and seeing that the cost is less than half of those from IBM I decided I might as well upgrade my Z60m at the same time.
Anyway, the point is that I'm worried about compatibility issues. I saw, in a thread, a link to the HDD firmware updates where there was a list of supported HDDs and found two Seagate drives in the list that I can purchase relatively cheaply. Before seeing the list I was going to buy a couple of Toshiba drives that were a bit cheaper than the Seagate ones. Am I being over cautious or is my thinking right that it's a 'safer' bet to buy the Seagate drives in the hope that they'll at least work out of the box even if the firmware updates might not. Are the Seagate drives as good as any other compatible ones? I see people are going for Hitachi drives but they're more expensive still.
    Sorry for the ramble.
    Thanks for you help.

  • T60 Processor Upgrade

Hi there! I have a T60 and I recently bought a game that said that my processor wasn't powerful enough..........
So I'm wondering if I would be able to upgrade the Processor chips from 2x 2.0Ghz to 2x intel core i5 3.3Ghz or anything over 2.7Ghz.
    Thanks for your help!

X series ThinkPads - going back to X2x and including X6x - have CPUs that are soldered to the planar, and not socketed, so swapping these is a no-go.
Yes, any T60/p board that I've ever seen will take a Core 2 Duo CPU from the first generation - I've done that upgrade many a times. The same applies to R60 and Z61 range of ThinkPads.

I belive you have two issues limiting you to 3GB of ram. One is that most 32bit windows versions have only 4GB of total address space. After your hardware is assigned, it leaves about 3GB left that you can use for ram. There are some 32bit windows versions that support more using Physical Address Extension, but a 64bit OS is a much better alternative.
I also believe your system board is limited to only 3GB, so the only way I can imagine to get past that would be to install a T61 system board, which can use upto 8GB.
You want DDR2 Sodimm. Your board should have two slots, you may have to remove one sodimm and replace it with a larger one to increase your ram, or you may have an empty slot, depending on what your system came with.

There is a huge subculture that debates the usage of ATI cards in :Linux.
It isn't popular, it works in varying forms and always seems to include sacrifices such as non openGL support, or no 3d acceleration.
All of those issues vary based on the flavor and this raises the other issue about disparate drivers, kernels and leads to the larger (and sensitive topic) of why Microsoft's singularly controlled driver model seems to thrive against the sheer elegance of a LINUX operating system that comes in countless flavors.
Just because its free, doesn't make it worthy, try telling a 50 year old accountant at a remote location to compile a driver in RedHat and you won't need a phone to hear him yell.
Spare me the evangelical arguments of righteous kernel stability and superiority, Microsoft is clearly winning the market share battle despite its ridiculous bugs, instability that comes gift wrapped on an ever larger install disc.

  • T60 Harddisk upgrade

    Hi,
I notice this laptop is very slow and also labouring while loading windows vista it already have 3 gb of memory ram on board.
I just want to change from 120 GB to a seagate 320 GB
    Question :--
    1. will is support it?
    2. how do I clone the harddisk over?
    3. Is it better to creat the recovery disc and reinstall the whole entire operating systems?
    4. I am missing one screw for the keyboard. Can anyone help me to find one and sent to me.
    Thanks

    1. Yes as long as it is the 9.5 mm thick and 2.5 inch SATA hdd.
    2. You can use softwares like Acronis Trueimage. Or use the Rescue and Recovery to make a backup of the old hdd, and then recover the new hdd to the factory shipped condition using the Recovery media, then recover the laptop to the original state during backup by using the Rescue and Recovery backup.
    3. This is usually better if your old hdd have lot of old programs and it is not running in its optimum state.
    4. You can buy these screws from ebay. But missing one screw won't really matter.

  • Ram Upgrade for T60

    Hi,
I have IBM T60 laptop with 1 GB ram.  I want to upgrade the ram to 2 GB.  According to the lenovo site I need to install this ram

     http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62761
Should we have to install the ram recommended by IBM/Lenovo for T60.
Are there any alternatives from a different company.

    Welcome to the forum!
Any laptop RAM spec'd at PC5300 or higher will work. You can shop around for the best deal you can find. FYI, IBM or Lenovo don't manufacture their own RAM sticks, but get it from other companies (Hynix, Samsung, Elpida, Micron) and re-brand it.
    Hope this helps.

    1) the hdd on the machine is SATA, 9.5 mm, 2.5 in form factor, either 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm is okay.
    2) if you got the recovery media, you can use it to install the recovery partition and OS/drivers on the machine.
    3) instruction for removal and installation of hdd can be found here:

  • Upgrading T60 HDD to SSD

I have a Lenovo T60 (2623-KFU) for about 3 years now, and it's still going strong with no real problems. I was thinking about some SSD solutions. Is it be possible (and not void the warranty) to replace the hard drive with an appropriately sized SSD? I hope the BIOS/Motherboad/Others does not limit this in anyway.
Alternatively, I do not use my WWan device, and was thinking about replacing the Wireless care with a Mini-PCI-e SSD card. I do know that the BIOS whitelists a few components, but is the restriction for Wireless cards only, or for everything?

  • T60 - upgrades

Hey guys, first time on the forum for me; looking to contribute as well as gaining experience.
I have an aging T60 but its not falling apart, and better built than most of today's laptops.
My fan was making a lot of noise, so i tried to fix it, but now it just died. something along the line of ... "Cannot start computer, fan problem"
Anyway, I have a replacement fan coming in a couple weeks, and so I thought i might as well upgrade my T60 with some nw parts.
I have read on other forums that T60 does support SATA 3.0 gb/s, but I need some kind of confirmation on this.
My friend suggested that I put another processor in my laptop. Currently a T2500, and he's suggesting a T7600 ($100)
From the benchmarks, socket M core2duos have about a 15% performance gain on the socket M coreduos. I dontwant to spend 100 bucks on that 15%. So instead, I thought I upgrade my HDD to a Seagate Momentus XT which isabout $100. This is cuz that if i do decide to finally move on from my T60, I can just take out the XT and put in another          laptop. Is this a better idea than replacing the processor?
I also heard the max supported ddr2 memory is 3 gb which is an odd number for me since most systems are ideal with 2 gb, 4 gb, or 8 gb. Is this true?
my second mini pci-e slot is empty, but its locked. Is there any way for me to unlock it so i can put things in it? such as a SSD.
Wow, I have a lot of questions, lol but one last one ..... any one upgraded their ABG wireless to ABGN?
Thank you all for your contributions!

    Welcome to the forum!
While T60 will accept any 9.5mm SATA laptop drive - including SATA II (3.0) ones, the transfer speeds are locked at SATA I (1.5) and there's no workaround.
The maximum usable RAM is 3GB, although 4GB can be installed. This is due to a chipset limitation.
Unless you're intent on running a 64-bit OS, gain from installing a T7600 will be marginal. I've got both running and difference in normal daily use is barely noticeable for most purposes.
Seagate hybrid drives have been getting very mixed reviews. Personally, I'd install a SSD as a boot drive, and put a large conventional drive in the Ultrabay for storage purpose. If you must keep the media drive, today's 7200rpm drives are quite fast, and available in large sizes...
Some T60/p units actually shipped with a "n" card - it's an Atheros-chipped unit known as ThinkPad abgn mini-PCI-e. One of the applicable FRUs is 42T0825 as well as 42T0827. More FRUs can be found in the HMM, if needed, although there's a boatload of these cards available on eBay.
    Have fun upgrading.

the T400 uses the GM45 chipset and will currently support up to 8GB total and possibly 16GB once larger modules are released.

Hi, I just upgraded my T60 (2007-48U) to Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 from XP (SP2). I then installed the Lenovo System Updater and downloaded over 571 mb of updates. I can't get any better than 1024X768 resolution (it was >1280 in XP). Thoughts?
