T60 Battery malfunction

I bought a Thinkpad T60 notebook (type: 2007 D62, SN# L34G72L) in January 2007 in Hong Kong (Now, I am in Germany).
Yesterday, Oct. 24, 2008, the battery malfunctioned (FRU P/N 92P1137, ASM P/N 92P1138). The indicator light under the screen twinkled continuously. And the battery does not function at all.  The Power Manager shows: “A battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged. Replace the battery.”
The battery was used rarely. Power Manager shows only 19 cycles.
Does someone know how to solve this problem?

PROBLEM SOLVED!  Another person with same problem on a T61 ended with a fix that worked on my T60.
His name is seiscons and the answer is to use an older PwrMgt file for a different Lenove Laptop...
    Use SL series > SL500 > 6.66.1
I can now use the FN+F3 or FN+F4 functions plus the battery icon is back on the Task Bar.

  • T60 battery issue

Hello, I have an issue about my T60 battery. The battery only charged/uncharged about 30 times, but its actual capacity is 27.52Wh and it is less then half of the design capacity. I use the laptop as usual and charge/uncharge normally.
    What is the cause?
    Thx.
Ps, bought the laptop 1 year ago.

  • T60 Battery failure

Hi guys. I have a problem. I have laptop T60 with original battery. The last night everythins was OK - the condition in Power manager was GOOD, charging cycle - 145. But today I cannot ude my battery - the battery indicator just blinking and when I tried to use  laptop on the battery - it doesn't work. Power manager says - Condition - Poor, Remaining capacity - 80% - is it possible?!? Is it possible the battery goes down for one night?!? I tried other battery and the laptop works fine. I wrote several topics but didn't find any solution for my problem. Do I have to buy a new battery or it's possible the problem to be sofware?! And the last - sorry for my english. Thank you in advance

Yes. I've had it happen to me. It wasn't overnight but a few days after I'd last used it. As I understand it the problem arises because one or more cells inside the battery short out. This can't be repaired. There are places that claim they can "refurbish" notebook batteries but I've never heard of any with consistently good results.
But look at it another way. You have a "T60 with original battery." These batteries are under a 1-year warranty even when the notebook itself came with a 3-yr warranty for a good reason. That's because they deteriorate slowly and thus they're considered expendable, like the battery and tires on your car.
Your T60 must now be at least 3 years old. You got good use from your battery. As frustrating as it may be to see the battery die suddenly and for no apparent reason, it really did give you a good run for its money.

  • T60- Battery doesn't recognise universal charger

    Hi,
I bought a refurbished lenovo T60. It was fine the first few days. Battery was charging and so on.
    Then the charger/adapter  went bad.
I have a universal charger and I'm using it. The problem with it is that battery refuses to charge from it. If the charger is on,
the thinkadvantage power manager tries for a second, then changes battery display to "battery not installed". The T60 would run on power but won't charge the battery.
Only when the charger is switched off/pulled out, the laptop runs on battery. I get to see battery is running but it would drain battery.
    Please advise
    - Is the issue with not using lenovo charger.
    - Do I have to buy lenovo charger or is there any option by which the battery would get charged from "universal charger".
    Thanks

non-lenovo chargers usually will charge the battery fine, but I've seen these cheap "knock-offs" get so hot that they catch on fire. I strongly suggest you get a real one. They aren't expensive. If you lived in usa I could get you one for less then $25 delivered to your door for 90watt, or $20 for 65watt. I imagine they are even cheaper in Asia, so check the costs on local websites or ebay. Good luck and make sure you verify them as genuine before you buy.

  • T60 battery AND HD woes? or

A few days ago I received a used T60 in what looks like very good condition. Plugged it into the 120 and proceeded to make some changes, replace the HD with a 320G, remove what I’ll call junk and updated Windows that took a couple hours without SP3. I heard that if it works = fix it. all worked surprisingly well with the battery health indicating 100%. I unplugged it to move to another room to test the wireless for less than ½ hour, plugged it back in with a charge of around 90% indicated and proceeded to DL some more wanted apps with the indicator going back to 100%. Shortly afterwards the built in battery indicator started flashing yellow with a message saying the battery is defective?? At 100%?? Nothing I did changed the indicator so stopped using it to get away from it. This AM powered up and got an error message ”cannot boot from any device”  ?? WTF. Put the original HD back in and got the same message. I then put a 8” dowel on the drives and heard a short motor wind up< 2 seconds, and what sounded like a short chattering then no sound at all.   Any ideas of what to do besides hoping the warranty is still in effect. Please help as the wife was going to take it on a trip for a week come Sunday.    TIA   Vic.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

well the question would be where did you get your laptop from???
also what do you mean when you say put a 8" dowel on the drive???
The battery warranty is 12 months, so most likely you battery are no longer protected by the warranty option. So you will have to purchase a new one from either Lenovo.com or some stores.
Regarding your HDD, if it is still within warranty (check here) then it will be replaced by Lenovo provided that the damage wasn't caused by you. Usually Lenovo will ship out the hdd to you, and you can replace it yourself, and return the defective drive to Lenovo through the same courier, but may vary depending on the warranty services that came with your laptop.
So basically, your wife's trip shouldn't be affected provided that you buy a new battery for her, you can get your hdd changed at any time within the warranty period.

  • Possible counterfeit T60 battery

I purchased a new battery for my T60 which looks like an original from the outside.
But the Lenovo powermanager shows as serial number "1" and as barcode number "XXXXXXXXXXX". That seems odd to me. The merchant insists that the battery is original and that he is a lenovo business partner.
Can this strange serial and barcode number happen with an original battery or is this the prove that it is a counterfeit ?
    Thanks
    Felix

The OP writes that he purchased what looks like a genuine battery from a vendor who claims it's OEM and that he's a business partner. Yet Power Manager says otherwise.
    1. Is there some other way to determine conclusively that the battery really is genuine, e.g. some special software?
    2. How does a customer verify that a seller really is an authorized Lenovo Business Partner? Do we contact Lenovo in our country? Is there an online list somewhere that's available to the public?
    3. If the battery turns out to be a fake and/or the seller isn't a real BP, what recourse does the customer have?
I'm wondering if the OP might have an outdated version of power manager that doesn't recognise the firmware of a newly manufactured battery so displays this false data. I know fake batteries are widely available, especially for this model, but there is no way to tell from the info we have here. Seeing a screenshot from the advanced battery tab in the current version of power manager might be helpful, as would a photo of the battery.

I am having a similar problem with my T60. From this thread I figured I needed a new battery,  so I bought a 42T4619. I inserted the battery into the laptop and it showed 25% charge, so I went ahead and let it charge down to 4% to cycle it before putting it on the AC adaptor.
However, now that it's on the AC adaptor I am still getting 0 current even though the battery showes to be in a 'Charging' state (particulars below).

  • Thinkpad T60 battery sudden drop

    Hey,
I bought a T60 Sep 2007. Recently  I am having a problem with battery life.(My battery is not on the list of recall)
My battery life went down drastically. It used to be a couple of hours, now it's less than half an hour. Power mangment reports a copule of hours remaining, until it gets down to about 85%-90%, and then suddently drop to 5% and a few minutes remaining.
I seldom use battery and most of time use AC. Interstingly, after charging my battery to 20% or 30%, it can last for half an hour or so. So I suspect there is something wrong with software rather than a physical problem.
    Any comments or solutions?

That type of behaviour is typical if one or more cells in the battery are bad. You should look into replacement options.
What condition does Power Manager report for the battery?
    Good luck andlet us know.

  • Strange Battery Malfunction

    Here is my situation...
Recently my 3 1/2 year old powerbook G4 17 inch battery went out. When I would plug it in the plug adapter light would turn green then orange immediately. If i press the power button (just on quick press) it would turn green, however no noise/slight humming as usually happens when powered up and the screen would remain black. To test if it is on, I press the caps lock button, and it lights up. Still no noise no screen no nothing. press the power button and hold it to shutdown and reboot. The light on the plug turns orange again. press the power button to restart, the light immediately turns green, and same as before no noise, no screen. At this point I remove the battery completely and reinsert, retry the previous steps, same response as though the battery never had been removed. Without the plug inserted the computer has zero juice. So I conclude its the battery.
Two days ago I go to an apple store and buy a brand spankin new battery. Get home, change batteries and plug it in. Everything works as usual. I let the battery charge over night and it works fine the next day as well. That next day I let it drain all the way down and then charge it back up still working. I put the computer to sleep, put it in my bag and go home from work. Today I get to work take out my computer, and it wont turn on. So I plug it in. NOW IT IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING AGAIN!!! WITH A BRAND NEW BATTERY!! I understand why my 3 1/2 year old battery wont hold a charge anymore, but why (even if drained completely) would a NEW battery be doing this?!? any help please!

You might try resetting your power management unit, as per Apple the settings can sometimes become unstable over time: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Also, make sure you condition your new battery, per this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284 . While the article says to do the drain/charge cycle once, Lithium batteries typically respond best to doing this 2-3 times.

  • Weird Battery Malfunction

    Hi there.
My battery has had a sudden change in behavior. Maybe someone else has had this happen and can shed some light.
A few days ago, I unplugged my fully charged Nano from the computer and as soon as I tried to play a song the battery meter went from full to red. I can only use it for a few minutes before it dies completely. I've tried charging it with my dock to the wall socket but I get the same thing.
I've restored the iPod but the problem persists.
It works perfectly when it's plugged in to a power source.
I dread the notion of having to send it away for repairs and being iPodless.
    Any help much appreciated!!!
    thanks
    Steve

You can check these out, but the fact that your iPod works when connected to power and not otherwise suggests a faulty battery which needs replacing.
    Beef up my iPod battery.
How to accurately determine your iPod battery life.
Can I make the meter more accurate?

  • T60, Battery Dead, is it OK to use?

I think, my laptop battery is dead. The message says: Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one.
As I usually use it at home, I don't mind using it with power connected to it. But, is possible to use my laptop with dead battery? Is it safe?
    Please recommend. Thanks.

you can leave the battery in the laptop it does not cause any safety issues. Also whether a battery inserted, your laptop would run at 100% cpu load when needed.

  • Battery malfunction after new operating system

The new operating system seems really nice, but it needs a patch because there is something wrong with the battery that charges normally 20% or 30% and then it shows full battery but it doesn't last more than an hour.

  • T60 Battery Problems

Having some trouble with getting my battery to charge. It is a genuine Lenovo battery and I just installed windows 7 pro and got the power management driver and software from site but it seems that it will say 2.5 hours until charge full then it will drop to an hour after a few minutes the battery gauge will get stuck at 16% for a while then it will say 100%. So I unplug and it and use it until it says about 91% then it shuts off and when I turn it back on its on 3% or so.
Any suggestions? And the battery only has 15 cycles

    'morning.
how old is the battery? there should be: mfg date and 1st used date under the battery info in Power Manager.
also, try setting custom some. charging thresholds, say 20 and 100%, under Battery Maintenance and see what happens.
    regards.

  • T60 charges battery but will not run on battery

    Background:
T60 purchased on EBAY approx a month ago by my friend. I have been trying to solve his battery problem, and am out of ideas.
    Battery charges appropriately.
Unit will not boot or run onbattery.  If running, and adapter pulled, it goes off immediately.
    OS is Windows 7 Ultimate.
Things I have tried or verified:
    Updated drivers from Lenovo support
Put T60 battery in my own R61E and the battery functions fine.  Discharge it a bit, put it back in the T60 and it charges but won't run.
Put my R61E battery in the T60, won't run.
Have uninstalled and installed the drivers.
Have checked driver files on the T60 against the driver files on my R40 and all files are the same size and date.
I have been through the Lenovo boards, but can't find a solution.  I am beginning to think it might be hardware.
    Please say it isn't so.
    Thanks
    Art

It's OK, I'm not a spring chicken myself...
With that said, it sounds like some of the power circuitry on the T60's motherboard has been damaged. There's really no easy way of fixing this type of issue. Motherboard swap would likely be the least complicated route to take if you can't return the machine.
    Good luck.
