T60 Fan FRU # Check

The fan on my T60 Thinkpad has begun making ugly gridning noises.  I used compressed air from the inside but it did not work, and I think the fan assembly needs to be replaced.  I'm still uncertain about the FRU # for the fan assembly I should get and I need help selecting one.

It doesn't matter in your particular case, either of them will work fine.
The latter one was for later machines that ran hotter, and has better cooling properties than the original one.

    Welcome to the forum!
Your T60 has dedicated ATi GPU and requires a "discrete" fan...any of the ones listed as such in the HMM will do.

  • Thinkpad T60 fan noise

    Hello
I own a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 laptop. Lately fan of my laptop started making a whirling sound. Its been only 2 years since i have purchased the laptop and now i am running with this horrible fan noise.
I want to replace the fan with a new one. So i have checked the hardware manual of Lenovo and found out that at some point i have to apply thermal great at a location of fan assembly at the time of installation.
What thermal grease i have to use for this. If i buy the fan assembly at Lenovo, will they send me the thermal grease also.
Also do i need to buy the same fan model as the existing one... If it so, where can i find the fan model in my system..
    Your responses are greatly appreciated.....

    Hello,
the simpliest  method is to use your 3years warranty and send it to depot.
The other way is to do a parts look-up on Lenovo support page, see link on top of this page.
Then your get the FRU number, search for it at Google, also for thermal grease like Arctic Silver.
The fan isn´t very expensive may be 30$ and it´s not difficult to deploy it. But you will loose warranty!!

  • Thinkpad T60 fans making sound

    Hello all,
I had this thinkpad t60 for 10 months now, lately I noticed there's an noise coming from the fans located on the left side of the laptop when the systems heat up at 92º F.  The noise last about a few seconds during the warming up stage, then its quite like normal, it's repeats a few times during the laptop is ON.
I don't know if anyone has the same problem, I'm thinking of something might get stuck blocking the fans or the oil is dried out.
    Any help would be appreciate.
    Thanks.
    TWS

Yes, calling for support would be the best thing since it's under warranty.

  • T60 Fan Replacement - Which part is the right one?

How do I know which fan model number to use? I have a 2613-CTO but on the parts info listing, 2613-CTO matches with 4 different model numbers:
    41V9931 (integrated)
    41W6406 (integrated)
    41V9932 (discrete)
    41W6407 (discrete)
How do I know which part is the correct one for my laptop?
Any assistance would be much appreciated, thanks!!!

Any  "discrete graphics" fan will do just fine, since that's what you have in that T60.
    Hope this helps.

  • T60 replacement fan - thermal grease

My T60 fan started whining so IBM sent me a replacement fan and a tube of thermal grease - but the fan already has thermal grease on it.
The grease is actually a 5 x 7 matrix of 35 small dots of thermal grease. Everything I have ever read about applying thermal grease says that it should be applied in a very thin, smooth layer and these thermal grease dots don't seem consistent with that at all.
    1. Should I flatten the dots and spread them out thinly? Or does IBM expect us to just install it as is - maybe the pressure applied upon installation is supposed to flatten the grease out appropriately?
    2. Should I have some pure alcohol handy to clean off all of the old grease before replacing this fan?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    eetolaa, welcome to the forum,
the fans come with thermal paste already on them, all you need to do is remove the thin clear plastic from the grey thermal pads. The grey pads are thermal plastic and come attached to the fan.

  • T60 frankenpad

    Hi All
I have come accross some brand new T61 penryn boards made after August 2008.
It therefore seems quite obvious to me that I should convert two of my T60s to more powerful machines. (already traded my T61 for my wifes T60).
I have bought two motherboards and I have to fully working 15" T60s. My question is now of what other parts I will need besides the CPU and Memory which is something I have in stock.
Do I need to purchase a T61 fan? And is it possible to fit the T500 fan in there as I have 2 of those lying around (1xIntel and 1x Intel/ATI)?
    Really appreciate your help :-)
    Thinkpad T500 - C2D P9500 - 8GB RAM - Intel X4500 - 120 GB Intel 330 SSD,
    Thinkpad T61 - C2D T9300 - 4GB RAM - NVS 140M - 120 GB Samsung 840 SSD,
    Thinkpad T60 - T2400 - 3GB RAM - GMA950 - 60 GB Samsung 840,
    And a lot more....

Besides the board you'll need the CPU, PC card assembly, cpu support bracket and it would be ideal to use T61 wire harness, but you can use the T60 if your reroute it a bit. It's also possible to use the T60 fan, but they aren't as efficient at cooling and on a discrete board you'll want to remove the grey pad from the gpu platform and replace it with thermal paste and assure it's adjusted to fit properly, but it's better to use the T61 fan.
If you need any of these parts you can send me a PM and I'd be glad to help.
ps. You'll also need to modify the frame and in order to use the T61 discrete fan you'll need to modify the retainer bracket. Here are photographs of the mods you need to perform.
Frame mod consists of removing one of the modem mounting "stand offs" (screw holes) and grinding down one so the frame doesn't contact the board on one of the mounting points.
    http://home.concepts.nl/~pc125480/t61_mod/IMG_0350_reds.jpg
Don't be tempted to try drilling the motherboard to relocate this mounting hole, it's been tried and will destroy the board.
A small piece of metal needs to be removed from the bracket and the grey pad removed fromt he top of heatsink in order to get the larger T61 heatsink to fit under the T61 keyboard without any bulge. It's a tight fit, but with this mod you can get it all back together without any noticeable keyboard clearance issues.
    http://www.e30tuner.com/assist/frankenpad/fpad_hs010.jpg
You'll also need to remove the modem. If you require one for dialup internet or fax you can get a pcmcia card very cheap.

  • Folio 13-1029 resume from sleep, fan stays on even if the machine is ice cold.

I've reloaded the OS on this machine twice, apparently I noticed the fan issue after the intel graphics driver was installed however upon uninstalling the driver the problem didn't vanish. I avoid sleep mode to keep the fan in check. Laptop runs nice and cool as the fan doesn't run much unless I watching video or converting MP3's, This wouldn't really be normal for the fan to be cooling at 104 degrees like right now as I type this. Thanks, Michael.

  • Whistling Fan on MBP C2D

Since getiing my MBP back from repair of a faulty keyboard i've noticed the
fan on the right side near the power button whistles though the rpm of the fans is quite low as this whistling begins right as they are ramping up, quite annoying.
If i apply a slight bit of pressure with my finger to the right corner above the power button it stops but as soon as i remove the pressure it comes back.
Never noticed anything like this before i sent it in for repair.
Anyone experienced anything like this, had it successfully repaired by apple?
    Thanks

Just wanted to update in case anyone else suffered the "whistling fan" issue especially after an applecare repair. This may be worth checking out bfore you send it in again.
Before i took my mbp in again to have this whistling fan issue checked out, i decided to do a little bit of investigating on my own and found that the screws in the battery compartment towards the front of the mbp were loose as were the 4 screws across the bottom rear of my MBP.
I suspect the loose screws on the bottom rear of the machine were most likely the culprit than were those in the battery compartment but i secured them all anyway.
Apparently the apple service tech simply neglected to secure these screws which may have allowed internal airflow to to be redirected or misdirected, thus producing the whistle.
After tightening these screws a little, the whistle is now gone. (thank god!)
Just a heads up in case this happens to anyone else.

  • Minor fan problem

I've got an MSI z97 gaming 5 motherboard, bios version 1.0
    Windows 8.1
Recently one of my case fans started having an annoying whine at a certain speed so I tried to change the fan speed but I can't. The speed changes while I'm in bios but as soon as I exit bios and load up windows it changes back to it's usual whiny speed.
I don't have any fan control software installed, cause none of them seem to work. I did change fan speeds once with MSI control center but I've uninstalled that program since it's crap and just crashes.

I'm sorry if my posts are hard to read I suppose I might be a bit incoherent, I'm not a native English speaker.
I do not have "smart fan mode" checked, which I figure should mean that CPU temperature makes no difference. But anyway...
My CPU temps are "ok", 4670k OC to 4,2Ghz, 35-37c idle, 55c while gaming... nearly 80c in prime95 (<-not very fine, but screw that not like I run prime95 anyway). Runs 10 degrees cooler in Prime95 at stock speed/voltage. It needs nearly 1,3v to even manage 4,2Ghz, at stock it uses 1,24v which I think is higher than 4670ks usually require, just a crap chip that's all. Just my usual bad luck with everything I buy, nothing unusual.
I have 2 extra fans in addition to the 2 fans that came with the PC case. One of the 2 extra fans is an 80mm fan that I zip tied to the back of the empty PCI slots to improve air flow to the GPU, the other is a 120mm front intake fan. Neither run at the speed I set them to run in BIOS, they are connected to 2 different fan connectors.
The 80mm fan runs at 1000rpm @ 50%, I set it to 50% in BIOS but as soon as Windows loads it speeds up to 1300rpm for no reason. It's not even possible to set it to 1300rpm in BIOS, 60% would be 1200rpm and 70% would be 1400rpm. The 120mm fan is set to 70% (1000rpm) but slows down to 800rpm once windows loads. Neither give a crap about bios fan settings. One slows down the other one speeds up once windows loads, which also tells me it can't have anything to do with cpu temp.
MSI control center could control the fans just fine but it crashes constantly, there is nothing I can do about that. I've posted before about my problems with MSI control center but noone has offered any real solution. I've used the latest version of MSI control center but every version I've tried keep randomly crashing.

  • GE70 0ND Fan started vibrating so loud

Just what tittle says, the fan just works fine but the structure that holds it to the motherboard it's loose and can't find the combination of screws to make it fit tight, so it's not vibrating, but not on tension so the fan can spin free. I made some research and one single new fan costs (including shippment) more than a hundred. Anybody had this problem and fixed it in another way?  Tighten the screws as hard as i can does not solve the problem, which is strange.

You can pull out the fan module but keep fan cable still connected and then power on the laptop. (If warranty was void already)
Check if it's still loud when simply rotating.
Sometimes the fan blades will slightly rub the metal case of the fan after long period of use because the dusts built up and broke the balance of the fan.
If the problem is not from fan side, check if the fan was correctly fixed onto the whole structure.
The size of the screws fixing the fan module is the same with those fixing the D-side cover.
You can pick some screws from the D-side cover to fix the fan first.
But I would suggest you send the laptop to repair center for complete inspection and repair.

  • Corecenter stops fan

I have a 865 neo2 board with an 3.2 and stock fan.  When me and my friend assembled my computer the fan power cable was accidentally hooked up to the wrong connector, it ran at 3125 rpm and kept to cpu at 49 degrees, not really a problem.  i saw core center wa not regesterin a cpu fan and checked it out, hooked it up correctly and turned it on.  The fan spins up untill core center is loaded by windows, them stops running and core center starts the alarm saying that the cpu fan is not spinning. (in the short time that core center is running and the fan is spinning it runs at over 4000 rpm)

    box3r,
I am using Core Center also for DOT only and speedfan for the temp monitor.
Used thermal probe to control the Fan rpm automatically.
You could also use S.M.A.R.T on bios by enabling it and it could cost you a performance.

Hi, Just bought a new Zalman FS-C77 Fatal1ty fan for my Cpu. Plugged it in and my sensor doesnt detect it. So i thought maybe the fan didnt have a sensor or sumthing, went out and bought Zalmans Fan Mate. Still no reading about Speed Fan. Plugged it in all correctly( i.e sensor to sensor, ground to ground) but still no reading from Speed Fan. Checked my bios for the fan speed and it was there. running at normal speed. Is this because Speed Fan Doesnt support K8N Ne0 4 Platinum?

It does support it. You should also be able to change the cpu fan speed as well.
