T60-hassle with Rescue and Recovery -- but, still in Boot or Start-up

Hi, using an Undelete-program I finally managed to remove a failing Rescue and Recovery (RnR) 3.01.x. Now, trying to install RnR 4.21.x, it says that it's 'not enough space in Startup'.
Q: How do I ensure a correct reset of either smb or whatever further space used by RnR, making space available for RnR 4.21 boot routines?
Running a T60 -- Type 1951-45G.
Anyone, like Herik or such having an answer?

Hi,
maybe one of the below links may help you out:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73630#10
Although based on your description, it might be, that none of it will fit you.
OK, so in case you uninstalled older verison of RnR, then please check whether this previous version of RnR was using a physical Recovery partition. If it does, then this error might indicate, that this partition is too small for the new files that should be copied to this location from the new version of RnR.
I have also seen this kind of error by installation on Win7, where the RnR application tried to place the preboot files into the 100MB partiiton, that is by default created by Win7 installation disk. As you mentioned, that you have been using 3.x version, then I assume, that you are on XP as the OS, Is that right?
One of the other options might be, that your antivir might be blocking the functionality/installation of RnR as RnR is accessing protected system files.
Also please make sure, that all the files from the older RnR version are deleted and you have the latest version of CSS (Client Security Solution) also installed on your system.
Any additional info is appreciated, as I can try to repro this situation in our lab.
Cheers

  • Boot into Rescue and Recovery but not Windows

Everytime my pc is powered on or restarted, it boots into Rescue and Recovery, but not Windows.
    What can I do?

    Hi,
first I would like to explain one thing, so that we are on the same page with the RnR partition.
Vista and XP are using different RnR partitions and the location of these aprtitions is placed on the HDD is different way, so that it can be used in conjuction with your Operating system.
So in the time, where you have used the XP and OS, the RnR partition was placed in the partition table on the end/back. DIrectly after you upgraded to the Vista and did not made any changes to the RnR partition, than it is still on the end/back, which is not the corect way. Becase the Vista should use the RnR partition, that should be placed on the begind/start/in the front of all the other partitions.
So in case there was no change made to the RnR partition, like relocation, or reinstall using the Vista RnR version, then you will not be able to boot into it.
So here is what I would advice you to do:
    - reinstall, or download and install the Vista version of RnR (the latest version) => this will rewrite the partition table and in case of need it will create the RnR partition.
    - use bmgr32.exe , which is located on your HDD by default to rewrite the partition table. Please start it from command line in follwing way:
    bmgr32.exe /phil
==> this will bring you all the command line options and you can use it based on this.
    NOTE:
Plase note, that once you captured some backups using the XP version of RnR , or a different version of RnR, then it's not possible to restor the backups using a different version.
Simple: you must use the exact same version of RnR for backup and also for the  restore process.
Let me know, if you have any more informations to this situation.
    Cheers

  • Problem with Rescue and Recovery after installing Norton Internet Security 2010

    Hi all.
It's my first time in this forum.
I have a problem, with Rescue and Recovery, after installing Norton Internet Security 2010 on my T43.
    The message I get it:
"Rescue and Recovery is unable to back up the file 'C:\Documents and settings\all Users\Application Data\ Norton\ 00000082\00000109\000003c1\cltMLS1.bat' Because the file is either corrupted or being used by another application. Please close any application that could be using the file.
I tried to close the Norton but I couldn't find how.
    Tanks
    Doron71

Hi and welcome to the forum,
the reason for this situation is, that the antivir files are protected from being modified.
This is the reason, why this file cannot be backed up. I assume, that you would get much more such messages, as there are surelly multiple files files, that are protected like this.
So the solution is to block folders from being archived. Please start RnR application and in the configuration set this folder as the excluded one.
This will skip the backup of this file and will fix your situation.
Please let me know, if you have covered this.
    Cheers

    Hi North450,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that the HDD was not working and is replaced in your J105 Desktop, if you have created the recovery discs before the HDD got crashed. I suggest you to install the OS (Operating System) using the Recovery discs to factory reset as it will create the default recommended partitions required for the computer and I’m sorry to inform you that the SATA drivers are not available in our support website for Windows Xp, but can be download from the Intel. Below is the link to download the driver:

I am unable to backup my Thinkpad X300 on to Time Capsule using Rescue and Recovery v4. Other Windows XP applications can see the Time Capsule just fine.
I have added the Time Capsule to the Windows workgroup also, and use Rescue and Recovery on the XP machine to select the Time Capsule as the backup location. The Rescue and Recovery always fails at the beginning saying "The backup was cancelled".
    Please help!!

ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery v4.2 is available to enterprises at this moment only, you can buy it from IBM parts for $75 + state tax + shipping though.

  • Problems with Rescue and recovery

    Hi,
I have a T500 (2082 52G) with XP running. Having had problems with some software I tried to use Rescue and Recovery 4 to recover from an earlier backup. However, the Recovery still is at 0 % after 3 hours. Do I have an opportunity to shut down the system or cancel the recovery without crashing anything? I read "Dont shut down during the process" at the beginning. As I am business user it is _most_ important not to loose any data.
    Any reply is much appreciated!

  • Power on and hard disk password issue with rescue and recovery ?

I have set a power on and hard disk password to prevent any unauthorized user to boot the computer and thats works fine but the problem is that it can be bypassed very easily by pressing the THINKVANTAGE blue button and going through the initial screen of the rescovery process.
When you reach the main screen of the recovery process just press on "restart system" and on the next boot up you won't be asked for a password and it will boot into Windows. Is there any way to prevent a user to initiate a rescue and recovery to bypass the password or even better a patch that will trigger the password screen as soon as the blue THINKVANTAGE button is pressed ?

I just recently discovered this problem as well.
I'm hoping someone can help us with this.

  • Backing up TO a FDE second HDD with Rescue and Recovery

Is it possible to back up my internal Drive C: HDD, which is a Lenovo FDE drive, onto a second HDD, also Lenovo FDE, installed in the Ultrabay slot using Rescue and Recovery? Using R61 and T61 machines and Windows XPP.
I don't see the point of backing up a FDE drive onto anything else, so please let me know if I am missing something!
    Many Thanks.

Firstly the free version of esxi makes it deliberately difficult to do scheduled backup by not providing the licensing that backup software can use (you may still be able to do backups manually). Some free software such as unitrends will provide file backup, but not image backup. This restriction is one way VMware gets you to pay for essentials or other higher license. But I'll leave that issue aside and try to guess what else you might be asking us here.
From the hardware standpoint you can use any good nas such as qnap, synology, or high-rely. Each has strengths and weaknesses (higher cost for HR but better hardware and removable redundancy etc). At the connectivity layer you can use CIFS (windows share), NFS, or iSCSI. any of the 3 will work and have pros and cons iSCSI is slower for big image based backups so NFS or CIFS (using...

  • How to access another computer's backups with Rescue and Recovery

    Hi all,
I'm in the middle of a disaster. It is a long story, but basically, here is what I need to do now:
My laptop was backing up to my NAS using Rescue and Recovery (R+R). I no longer have that laptop. How can I access those backups and retrieve files using another Lenovo PC now?
Here's what I've tried on the Lenovo PC to access the laptop's backups:
When I open Windows Explorer and go directly to the NAS, I can see the RRBackups folder and the directory structure, but all the files are like Data0, Data1, etc. So can't restore those.
When I open R+R on my PC and try to restore individual files from Network, nothing shows, as if there are no backups on the NAS.
When I press F11 and boot into R+R, I can see the Scheduled Backups on my NAS, but when I click on them to access individual files, they appear empty.
    Thanks for your help.

    bighill89, welcome to the forum,
do you know which version of R&R was installed on the ThinkPad and did you by any chance create a cd?
If there are version differences between the two systems there may be problems recovering data out of the backups, using a rescue cd may help. The only doubts I have here is whether or not the correct network driver will be present on the cd allowing you to access the NAS.

  • Creating DVDs with Rescue and Recovery 4.5 on Win7 64bit

Hi , I have a question reguarding the rescue and recovery DVD creation.
When I click the Q drive Lenovo_Recovery, the program will ask me if I want to create recovery media or reclaim disk space.
What I want to aks is, does making the DVD disks after patching the OS and re-Partition (the originally just one huge C drive which needed to repartition to smaller system drive) matter? or It doesn't matter at all?

The size of the C drive is really not important during the backup of the Q drive.
Test the backup medium (dvd set, USB) BEFORE you decide to delete Q drive. ie, boot the recovery set, then exit.   If you have plenty of space on your HDD, I would KEEP the q drive.
    ===
If you ever use the recovery set, and multiple partitions(c,d,e), you have considerations, ie will it wipe the whole HDD blank before starting.
    ==
If you are using DVD, disk 1 is the bootable, disk 2 and 3 are data disks. Just boot using disk 1, then exit.

It errored out after it has already created some folders and files as indicated in the first post.Tried the same steps several times just make sure it was repeatable by closing Rescue and Restore app and starting it again. The network between the share host and my W510 was a direct RJ45 cable connection, so zero hop.  In the end I used Windows 7 Backup and Restore to do full backup, using the same \\server\sharename, the network share was mapped without a problem. But then Windows 7 Restore CD wasn't able to map network share - giving me 0x800704cf. Googling shows lots questions raised on this but no fix.
    Update:
Last night, I gave it a shot again. For some reason, RR was able to mapped the network share using \\IPaddress\sharename (this time I used a different folder and a diferent sharename). OK great, but after 10 hrs it's at 88% completion, did my math, estimated elasped time is 12 hrs, Wow! The image backup with Windows 7 Backup took 5 hr 51 min with 132GB in the WindowsImageBackup folder. RR is 2x slower!
On the other hand, as it's still running, the est. backup folder size is 106GB. RR does a better job in compression - a 20% reduction in size compared with Windows' at the cost of 2x time.
Going back to the Windows 7 Restore CD 0x80704cf error when mapping the network share, found an Internet user posting that he succeede by providing a NIC driver.

  • Help: Dual Boot Vista/XP (multiple partitions) with Rescue and Recovery?

So I re-installed my Thinkpad and want to dual boot Windows XP and Vista Ultimate on separate partitions. I'm using the Windows XP pre-load and a separately licensed Vista Ultimate.
I first installed XP preload and did a backup with RnR. Then I'm installing Vista Ultimate by shrinking the XP partition and creating a new partition for Vista. I plan to use RnR in XP to do another backup from the base and hoping it will backup Vista as well. Will RnR backup both the Vista and XP partition correctly so that when I recovery in the future, it will restore both?
I don't want to blow it and have to redo the whole thing. Help would be much appreciated!
edit: This didn't work, as RnR only allows you to backup as many as partitions as your base image had....

    hi
you say that you have a vista Ultimate did you try making a windows image from the back up and recovery in vista? in that way both of your xp and vista can be save to an hdd or  a set of DVD'S(as a back up image)
else try using acronis true image it should work out ...good luck!
