T60 Thinkpad overheating

Am trying to order a fan for my laptop - it's 3 years old - was very expensive.....T60 model......all of a sudden it's overheating and shutting down......I have repeatedly called the 800 numbers for IBM in the U.S. and have gotten a runaround for days now......all I want to do is order a fan for my computer.....one 800 number won't give out part numbers any more -as of 3 weeks ago ...told me to use the Lenovo website.....did that- impossible to navigate to find a FAN   ........the other 800 number (sales)you get someone in the phillipines or somewhere - and they say they don't know the numbers of parts - and when I gave him a part number - and asked him if that was the correct number for a fan - he said he had no idea......and we got disconnected.....
Am totally frustrated......it seems as if they want you to buy a new computer...making it very difficult to find parts...
FYI - I took this problem first to a reputable IBM dealer in NYC and they told me they would fix it - but I would have to order the part - it would be "easier".....
So - HELP!!! please - if someone knows the fan number for an IBM T60......it's the part in the upper left of the motherboard.
thanks

I had the same problem with my 3 y/o T61. Take a bottle of compressed air and give *both* fan areas a good blow. They are located on the side and back of your laptop. This did the trick for me.
what you are doing is only a temporary fix, if you want to clean the fan assembly properly you would need to take off the palmrest and keyboard and blow out the dust from inside to outside. What you are doing is just loosening the dusts and blowing it back to the innards of the laptop, if the dusts settles on your electronics and water condenses on it (due to rapid temperature change in a humid environment, i.e. going from un-airconditioned area to an air conditioned), then it may cause a short circuit, which is something you don't want.
So if you want to clean the laptop properly, you should open the laptop up and clean the dusts off the laptop motherboard and use the compressed air to loosen any dusts, and use a microfibre or cotton tips to clean the dusts off the fan blades. This will ensure that laptop will maximise its service life, and you won't experience any electronics problem as it ages.

  • T60 thinkpad wont turn on

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me with my problem.  My Lenovo t60 thinkpad wont turn on.  It boots up all the way to the hit ctrl+al+delete box and when I do hit it nothing happens.  I have tried restarting it, pulling the battery, etc... and nothing has worked yet.  Any suggestions?   thank you!!!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
So technically speaking it turns on and goes to Windows startup where it gives you an option to press Ctrl-ALt-Del? I think your T60 is in need of re-installation of Windows, but try repair option from the Windows disc first (depending on the version of Windows you on it).
If repair doesn't work, then you can try pressing ThinkVantage button during boot to put back your T60 to factory state, doing so will wipe off all data on your thinkpad though. The R&R gives you few options to save your important data on external devices like USB drive etc, do so before using factory preload option.
    Hope it helps.

  • T60 Thinkpad Keyboard randomly stops working.

Have a couple of T60 thinkpads which experience the same problem sporadically.
The keyboard will stop working and all key presses other than the Fn+ combinations will cease to function.
This can occur at the logon screen or sometimes after successful logon and use of the notebook it will stop with no apparent cause.
There appears to be no pattern to when or why this will occur.
    Any suggestions welcomed.

Hi antb, welcome to the forum,
I would try re-seating the keyboard connectors, how you remove the kb can be found here

  • What am I missing? (overheating, fans, tpfancontrol)

    Situation:
I have three T60 laptops. I will henceforth refer to these at T60-A, T60-B, and T60-C
T60-A is a 14" version, and is working fine.
T60-B is a 15" version who's hard drive died. I'm trying to install a new hard drive. This computer works fine with the hard drive from T-60-A, but overheats and shuts down. This is the one I want to fix. This is the one I'll mostly focus on.
T60-C is a parts computer with suspected bad motherboard. It is also a 15" model and has been taken apart as of yesterday, fan extracted.
    T60-B overheating symptoms:
She runs warm (by feel directly under the fan on battery (from T60-A) power. She runs HOT with power supply (also from T60-A) plugged in, and shuts down after a time. No fancy graphics programs running. Just Google Chrome.
I can hear the fan running, and feel hot exhaust coming out. In looking at the intake and exhaust, I seen no visible dirt/dust/spilled drinks that would block the ports. My initial plan was to replace fan with that from T60-C, but at this point, I'm not sure that's the problem, and might do more harm than good. I'm not adverse to performing this opweration though. Fan is loud, but not the sort of 'fan going bad' loud. It's seemingly just working really hard.
    Any suggestions on starting points?
    TPFancontrol problems:
I figured this would be a helpful diagnostic tool.
I downloaded the program, extracted the files (using T60-A again, being the only reliable computer). But I can't for the life of me figure out how to install the program. I found the .exe, but get error. winio.sys is missing in app folder or failed to load.
Any thoughts or recommendations on a different download that might work?
Sorry if these are the most basic of questions. I did search here and forums.thinkpads, and I'm still stuck.
    Solved!

    Hi.
What are the 7-digit type/model numbers from the back of each laptop? This will aid further discussion and the referencing of part numbers.
If the fan in "T60-B" is making any abnormal noise it means it may not be giving optimal performance. It could probably still use a fresh cleaning and lubrication even if you don't see any obvious buildup of dust or particles. In addition, the thermal paste (a.k.a. thermal compound) between the heatsink and CPU may need to be refreshed. The thermal compound aids in heat dissipation. Use a good quality product such as Arctic Silver 5, which always works great for me.
Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

  • T60 Resurrection

    Good day everyone:
My T60 Thinkpad recently had her last hoorah after 5 years of our love/hate relationship. Specifically, the hard drive is dead as a door knob. As a little background info, I can only access the the beginning of the ThinkVantage page and cannot even get to my back ups to restore her to its original state. (I mention this in case anyone has been in a similar situation and the laptop is beyond repair.)
I have been going back and forth on whether to buy a new desktop or laptop and i decided to buy a desktop and repair the T60 to keep both sides of my brain happy. I am not an expert at laptop experimentation and would like the community's input is my best course of action.
These are the two choices I am looking at to upgrade the HDD and Ram, respectively:
    HDD:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148591&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle...
    RAM:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134770
I want to ensure that these two products will well work together and if there is anything else that must be upgraded in order to keep the bloody machine from overheating. I am open to all advice. Thanks in advance!
    Cheers

I agree with the Hybrid drives. The idea is to get the best of both, speed of an ssd, and secure cost effective storage of a platter drive, but it seems like you get the vanishing data of an ssd and the speed of a platter drive with the added bonus of having it randomly hang and do nothing at all for several seconds at random times. Reviews are mixed though, so it seems some users find them to be of value. I think the best option for a T60 is a real SSD, and Intel is about the only manufacturer that makes them that don't fail more often then traditional drives, then you can put a platter drive in your ultrabay for storage. The SSD will give you some fast virtual memory to help make up for only being able to use 3GB of ram... but unfortunately you'll only get SATA1 speeds. It is possible to put a T61 board in a T60, that could get you 8GB of ram and SATA2. Some modification would be required.

It doesn't matter in your particular case, either of them will work fine.
The latter one was for later machines that ran hotter, and has better cooling properties than the original one.

  • T60 Wireless drops out randomly

    Hi,
We have several Lenovo T60 Thinkpads in our company. Every now and then the wireless disconnects and users are limited to work locally. As we have all our documents on a server that is very annoying to our users.
As far as I could investigate the problem there is no specific reason linking to when the connection get lost.
The only indicator is that the little green wireless symbol next to the bluetooth symbol is not activate any more.
If I check in the hardware device manager the wireless is on. Switiching it to off and again to on does not work. I also deactiviate that Windows might turn the power of to save energy.
The only solution thats works to bring back the wireless device to run so far is to restart the computer.
We have a Draytek vigor Router but as other users with different laptops dont face the same problem i would limit it to the T60 series.
Anyone facing the same problem?Any suggestions?

have you tried moving the hub as far from the pc as possible in case there is interference from the pc/power supply.
have you tried a new filter and if possible a different router - even borrowed just to try it.  it is not impossible that there is a problem with the hub but need to try other things first

  • Lennovo T60

Hi i have a lennovo T60 thinkpad, after a faulty backlight in my last screen i bought a used screen from a reputable dealer on ebay and replaced the screen which works well for a few hours then surprise surprise blacks out and fades so i have to look really closely in the light to see it, if i close the lid and re-open it springs back to life. It also has a pink ting down at the bottom left hand side of the screen. I dont want to go to the expense of having the screen removed and a new one in it's place if it isnt the screen. So far it has only done this whilst plugged into the mains supply and not while running on battery. The person i purchased the screen from has suggested it needs a little paste on the processor and graphics but i am not fully convinced. I really want my laptop to work as it's a great machine but i cant afford to throw endless money at solving the issue, any help please?

  • Help Needed! T60 can't reach internet

Please help me to resolve this problem on my 3+ year T60 ThinkPad.
Suddently, my laptop couldn't reach any internet, either local area connection or wireless connection.
I followed the troubleshooting on Lenovo.com and processed all the steps. However, it didn't work for my case.
    (1) When I input "ipconfig/release" and then input "ipconfig/renew", this message appeared: An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection 2: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
    (2) When I tried to "ping 127.0.0.1", here, "transmit failed, error code 5".
BTW: The hardwares should be in good conditions, and I also re-installed the drivers and TCP/IP.
Thank you very much for your help.

Try booting in "Safe" mode, and then try shutting down.
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>
Safe mode will not load 3rd party drivers:
    com.Ralink.driver.RT2870USBWirelessDriver 4.1.6
    com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard 5.8
    com.Apogee.driver.EnsembleFWOverideDriver 1.4.4
If shutting down in Safe mode works, then one of those 3rd party drivers is your root cause

  • T60 Touchpad

I am having issues with the touchpad on my T60 Thinkpad. The red trackpoint works as does a mouse inserted into the USB port, but my touchpad just stopped working. I went to ThinkPad configuration but I can't even click on the touchpad - it's greyed out. How can I fix this so my touchpad works again?
    Thanks for your help.

In  Controlpanel - mouse there should be a tab named "Synaptics". In this tab you can enable/disable trackpoint and touchpad.
In the BIOS you will find the touchpad unter "Config" - "Keyboard/Mouse". The default value for the touchpad is "automatic"

  • T60 - Standby problems with long in activity

    Hi All,
Hopfully someone can point me in the right direction with a issue i'm having with one of the T60 Thinkpads.
    Here's the run down:
We brought 3 T60's (type 6369-A56) last december (online web sale). 1 of the three is displaying problems when dealing with standby mode. If the laptop goes into standby mode for longer than anywhere between 30mins to 1hr the laptop doesn't resume from standby when you either open the lid of the laptop or use the Fn function key. When either action is taken to bring the laptop out of standby mode the cresent moon LED remains lit, the HDD LED lights up for a breif second and then turns off, the power indicator turns on and say's solid, the screen remains blank at all times. When this happens you can hear/feel the HDD spinning up and doing something and you can also hear the processor fan spin into action as if it were coming out of standby. Having mains power doesn't seem to make a difference with this problem.
I've already spoken to Lenovo support RE this matter and they believe it is a software related problem. I've done some further testing to try and determine that, this is what I've done...
I took a Norton Ghost image of one of the 2 working T60's HDD's (standby works perfectly on the other two laptops) and used that Image to ghost the HDD in the faulty T60, this gave me two Identical laptops (hardware and software). The power scheme for the laptop is as follows, Turn off Display @ 5mins, go into Suspend Mode @ 15mins. I left both laptops alone at exactly 9:05, 5mins later the screens when blank, @ 15mins later both went into standby mode. 45mins after standby mode had kicked in I came back to both laptops and used the Fn key to resume the laptops(at the same time) and the faulty T60 didn't come back from standby and the same symptons as mentioned eariler happened.
After that happen I decied to see what would happen if I switched the HDD's between the laptops (hdd from faulty laptop into the working laptop, hdd from working laptop into faulty laptop). After switching the HDD's over I ran the same tests as above. Again 45mins after standby mode had been active I used the Fn key to resume from standby and the laptop with the hdd from the faulty laptop worked straight off the batt, however the hdd from the working laptop in the faulty laptop displayed the same problems as mentioned above, thus ruling out the software as the cause of the problem.
My question is, knowing all of that, where is the issue likly to be? Is it going to be RAM related or board related?
Is the likley outcome going to be returning it to Lenovo for repair?
    Cheers
    Chris
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks Cedric,
At the time the tests were done, both were using battery power (levels were as close as ai could get them at the time, but they were around the 85% mark when the first test was carried out), however as mentioned in my OP the problem is still there when using Mains or Battery power.
Hibernation is disabled on both laptops (it was disabled before I created the Ghost HDD Image, I have checked that both still have it disabled)
Just to satisfy your curiosity, the faulty T60 already had the latest BIOS updates installed as apart of some intital testing that I had performed (its running System BIOS version 7IET32WW), however the working laptop was running the previous version. I've since updated that system and both are now running the same version.
Since upgrading the BIOS so that they both match, I decided to Load BIOS defaults (F9) with only 1 change (that change is to the SATA Mode from AHCI to Compatibility) to both machines.
I ran the same tests as before, but this time using mains power and the problem is still present on the original laptop displaying the symptoms. There also seems to be a second issue which is related to this problem, if i shut the laptop down and try to reboot 9 out of 10 times i get the following message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair
No sometimes I can restart the machine again and it will boot into WindowsXP, however most times I cannot. And a repair will resolve the issue but not always.
In regards to any BIOS settings, there aint that many options in the bios that deal with power management (nothing that I can see that deal with standby mode), whats the problem you've seen with the hibernate function?
    Cheers
    Chris

  • T60: Windows 8 hangs on BIOS thermal setting!

I just installed Win8 x32 on an IBM T60 Thinkpad.  I put Win8 on a 30GB partition alongside XP on the main disk. The installation went smoothly except that the installer (on a USB stick) saw the new partition but could not work with it. For that I had to go into the BIOS and switch the SATA drive to Compatibility Mode. Then everything went fine.
After setting things up, I went back into the BIOS to change the drive back to SATA. While there I also changed the thermal setting (which controls the fan) from High Performance to Balanced.
Subsequently Win8 hung and would not load. It tried to repair itself but went nowhere. So I went back into the BIOS and undid those two changes, and voila Win8 was back.
Then after a while I decided to go back into the bios again and set the fan back to Balanced, thinking it was only the SATA setting that was the culprit in this drama. To my surprise, the system hung again. So I went back to the Bios and returned the fan to High Performance again, and once again Win8 was up and running.
Does anyone know why the Compatibility mode is important? When I tried to switch back to SATA mode Win8 again hung on boot.
Most critically, I'd like to know what's going on with the temperature control setting. The machine wasn't laboring anywhere hard enough for temperature to be a factor during the boot process. Leaving it on high performance means I must listen to the fan all the time, which is exceedingly annoying. What's more, when on battery power, this is going to crush up-time badly, making Win8 pretty unworkable on the road.
    Thanks.

    Hey,
Same here. I installed Win 8 on my T60... well, I spent 2 hours trying to install Win 8, and 3 days trying to desperately downshift to XP, also without success, but that's beside the point. I have been experiencing a really difficult time, particularly during a "warm" reboot. Cold reboots are fine. W8 works great, except for when it unexpectedly shuts down. Originally I was thinking I had a hd problem, but after realizing that startup was fine on cold reboots, I installed Core Temp to see what temp range I was operating in.
Wow! I have been using CoreTemp on my T60 with XP for about a year, and I've never seen such swings in temperature. It can be 56degrees one second and 88degrees just a few seconds later. I'm in a warm climate, but still, the temperature swings are huge. The fan is working constantly, but keeping the system in the 50-60 range as long as I'm not executing any programs. If I run one program too many and push the temp past 89degrees, I'm cooked, laptop shuts down and I have to wait for it to cool off. That can't be good for system life.
I just replaced my original noisy fan (after 6 years!), so the fan is working perfectly. I regularly ran in the 80s on my old settings with no shutdown problems, so this must be specific to W8. I will try to change BIOS for my fan to High Performance. Hopefully that will resolve the issue. I need this machine to work another 9 months minimum, for a total system life of 7 years. Hang in there baby!
If this keeps happening I may have to go back to XP, or I'll try W7. At least now I know that as long as I keep an eye on the temp the system won't break down on me.
