T60 upgrade from 60GB SATA to 320GB HDD

I know just enough to be dangerous, so please bear with me.
I have a T60 1953-D7U with the original Toshiba 60GB SATA/150 HDD that is out of space.  I used Norton Ghost to copy the 60GB drive to a Fijitsu 320GB SATA/300 HDD that was in an external USB enclosure.  Both are 5400 RPM.  I copied the MBR.
After I installed the 320GB drive, the T60 doesn't boot.  Using F12 to pause the boot process, I see the 320GB drive listed but apparently it doesn't appear as a boot drive.
Is there something else I have to do for the T60 to boot from the new drive?
Note:  the SATA controller Mode Option is set to "AHCI".  The other option is "Compatability".   Does this have anything to do with it.
Add'l Info:  Originally I tried to copy the 60GB to the 320GB using Acronis True Image v7.0 that was on a bootable CD.  Acronis gave an error msg E000101F4 No Drive 0 Found.  It did see the USB attached 320GB drive.  That's why I switched to Ghost.  Is there any problem using Ghost for this copy?
Many thanks for your time.

Here’s my original problem.
I have a T60 1953-D7U with the original Toshiba 60GB SATA/150 HDD that is out of space.  I used Norton Ghost to copy the 60GB drive to a Fujitsu 320GB SATA/300 HDD that was in an external USB enclosure.  Both are 5400 RPM.  I copied the MBR.
After I installed the 320GB drive, the T60 doesn't boot.  Using F12 to pause the boot process, I see the 320GB drive listed but apparently it doesn't appear as a boot drive.
Andy was absolutely right.  The primary issue seems to be that the New Drive(320GB)  MUST be in the Lenovo Laptop when you’re doing the copy of the Old Drive C:\ (60 GB) to the New Drive and building the Master Boot Record (MBR).  My C:\ is now up and running on the New Drive.
In my case, I gave up on the SERVICEV001 partition.  I never could get it copied.  I believe it’s for reverting back to your original configuration in case of a total disaster.  Since my T60 is 5 years old, I'll buy a new PC if that happens.  I’m running XP SP3 and use Norton Ghost v15.
This email is to thank those that helped me and help the next guy who might try this.
I’m sure there are many ways to accomplish the task, but here’s what I eventually did.
I removed the T60 from the Docking Station.  I have too many USB External drives to keep the drive letters straight.
I used Norton Ghost to do a new full backup of the Old Drive C:\ and SERVICEV001 to a completely different USB attached Portable HDD.
The New Drive was attached via a USB Enclosure.  I used Windows Computer Mgt/Disk Mgt to format the New Drive with Partition 1 as 293GB NTFS and Partition 2 as 5GB FAT32.  At that time, I still had hopes of saving the SERVICEV001 partition.
I installed the New Drive in the T60.  I removed the battery while doing so.
I used a Norton Ghost Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD) to boot.  Then I used Ghost SRD Recovery feature to restore the Old C:\ (Source) to the New Drive Partition 1 (Target).  In Ghost, the parameters were Set Active = YES, Copy MBR = Yes.
That’s about it.  OK, that’s about a half days work, so what did I do the other 4+ days.  I wasted a couple of days before I posted to this Board and got Andy’s reply.  And I wasted a couple of days trying to save SERVICEV001.
In the meantime, I learned quite a bit.  My suggestions:
Read Andy’s email above and the references he cited.
Practice with Windows Computer Mgt/Disk Mgt to understand Disk 0, 1 and Partitions 1, 2 etc.
Practice with DOS C:\ DiskPart and how to list Disk and Partition info.
Copy C:\boot.ini to a flash drive and read the following post from the Norton Board.  You probably won’t need it, but you’ll know about it just in case.
 http://community.norton.com/t5/Other-Norton-Products/Ghost-copy-my-hard-drive-issues/td-p/385934/hig...
5.  I used a Norton Ghost Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD) to boot.  I worked for me.  I used the Recovery function to restore the C:\ drive on the New Disk.  I also used the Ghost Utilities Partition Table edits frequently while trying to copy SERVICEV001.  Spend time understanding the Ghost SRD capabilities.
A note about the ThinkVantage software.  I love it.  I would never be able to keep my laptop current without it.  My next laptop will likely be a Lenovo because of the ThinkVantage software.  I did, however, discontinue TV Rescue & Recovery and switched to Norton Ghost.  Two things.  One, I just didn't feel confident that I knew where my backups were.  i.e. Not particularly user friendly.  And, two, a couple of years ago it was incompatible with some of the other TV software unless you went through a conversion process.  Everybody has a choice.
Many thanks for your help.

  • T60 upgrade from XGA to SXGA+

Hi I 'm looking for help on the steps in a T60 upgrade from XGA to SXGA+. My laptop is a T60 type 2007-BH5 with an XGA 1024x768 screen and I know that I need to get another high resolution LCD screen and cable to suit (that includes bluetooth) but I'm unsure if my motherboard's graphics will be compatible with the new resolution. Any ideas on how I can be 100% sure that all is OK before I order the parts?

    Welcome to the forum!
You actually just need the LCD itself, the cable is shared in T60 series regardless of resolution. As long as you get a proper screen (with a FRU number compatible with T6x series) you'll be fine.
    Hope this helps.

    Greetings,
Just completed (1/2 day effort) the upgrade of my wifes T60 wide screen, from XP to WIN 7. All went well except for the battery charging logo on the bottom right side of the screen.  It says 95% and not charging.  I have upgraded to the latest BIOS 1.17 and  the power drivers.  Any ideas?

  • Upgrading from 320gb hdd to 128gb ssd on Mac Pro dual boot.

I have a Mac Pro 2008 with a 320gb hdd and I want to convert it to a 128gb ssd.  I have it dual boot from one drive partitioned 50/50. I was wondering how I should transition from hdd to ssd.  The drive has less than 120 gb on it and the Mac Pro runs Mavericks and Windows 7.

Pop SSD into drive bay with adapter in FW800 drive adapter, use CCC to clone system and recovery partition.
As for Windows, it needs about 80GB at  least esp. on an SSD. Use WinClone to make a restore image.
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB is $144 on Amazon and the 128GB is $80. I look at the 500GB $299 and think, "why not."
you could leave for now the slow old 320GB hdd for Windows and hold a backup for OS X.
Your system, either one actually, should only have OS and apps on boot drive, very little if any data, just 3-4GB for AppData or ~/LIbrary to hold preferences, mail and minimal data.
Convert, as in clone the system.

  • Upgrading from HDD to SSD

I received a HP 2000 2b43dx laptop as a gift. I increased the ram from 4GB to 8GB but that did not help the performance very much. I realize that the performance is limited mostly by the cpu which is AMD E-300 running at 1.3 MHZ.  I don't think it is possible to easily upgrade the cpu so I would like to replace the 320GB 5400 rpm HDD with a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD. It looks like Samsung data migration software should work ok for cloning the existing HDD (except it does not carry over the OEM recovery partition).  I made a USB copy of the recovery partition and since I have recently upgraded from Win 8 to 8.1 I hope I never have to go back to square 1 with the recovery partition.
First limitation for the upgrade is that I have SATA II instead of SATA III but that is not supposed to be a major limitation.  Second limitation is that apparently HP consumer laptops such as mine have a locked BIOS so it is not possible to activate AHCI through the BIOS. Also device manager only displays AMD SATA controller and no AHCI SATA controller.  I was hoping that this would not be a major problem because supposedly the Samsung Magician SSD management software allows to you to manually manage the SSD performance.  BUT when I read the user manual for Samsung Magician:
The Magician manual (page 5) states that it does not work with AMD chipsets with AMD drivers which my model has.  This is a major limiting factor because use of the magician software is critical for making sure the SSD is working correctly.  Is it possible to switch from AMD drivers to Microsoft or Nvidia drivers so I can use the Samsung Magician software?  Any references to sources and methods would be appreciated.
    This question was solved.

Don't overthink it. The BIOS is set to ahci by default and invisibly. Windows 8 and 8.1 manage SSDs natively so there is nothing you really need to do. Clone the old drive to the new and go. The only thing to be careful about when you are cloing is not to shrink the sytem reserved partitions. If you do that things like Windows Backup, which use the system reserved partition, will no longer function and if the system partitions are shrunk too much the system will fail to boot. That can be repaired with a repair disk but it is a pain you want to avoid. So use a manual clone option and keep all but the main C:\ partition the same size.

If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd.  Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades?  And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd.  Do I use migration assistant?  Do I need to make a time machine backup first?  Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
    Thanks for reading

If you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do.  If it is something like this, an  enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes.  The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY.  Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
    Ciao.

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.

  • How can I upgrade from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 on my 2012 mac mini? (2.3 GHz, 4 GB, 500 GB SATA disk) I don't want OSX Yosemite.

How can I upgrade from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 on my 2012 mac mini? (2.3 GHz, 4 GB, 500 GB SATA disk) I don't want OSX Yosemite.

If your Mini shipped with OS X 10.7 Lion, then it was considered a 2011 build model, or before.
The Mini 2012 model, is considered a Late 2012, & the last one where RAM could be upgraded.
And it shipped with Mountain Lion 10.8, which is a fairly OK system if one had older software.
(However mine shipped in Dec 2014, with Mavericks 10.9.0, and was built in January 2014.)
There were a few different build versions of Late 2012 Mac Mini, the i5 or i7 processor,
in dual-core or quad-core, and some CTO or built-to-order versions with other specs.
You can buy Mountain Lion from online Apple Store, & use a download code emailed to you to
get the Mt. Lion 10.8 from Apple Servers; this would be about it, since Mavericks isn't available.
So hopefully that is an option you can exercise; in addition the computer may prefer more RAM.
    Good luck & happy computing!

MY QUE IS, WILL IT BE FIXED IF I UPGRADE FROM OSX 10.8.5 TO MAVERICKS? What other options do I have? What can be an approximate cost for fixing this problem?

Of course not. It's a hardware problem, so it can't be fixed by upgrading software. The only option you have got is to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller.
That error indicates a problem with the hard drive. What you have to do is to make a backup of your files and take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller, so they can confirm that the problem is the hard drive and not the SATA connector, which could be worse.
If it's a hard drive issue, it's not expensive (about $100-200, depending on the hard drive). If it's a SATA connector issue, the whole logic board may have to be replaced.
Note that you can replace the hard drive yourself if you want, but the cost between doing it yourself and taking the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller is similar

Turn the Mac on (or reboot it) and press command-option-R as soon as you hear the startup chime. Hold the keys down until you see a globe, then release. When the Recovery Menu appears you choose Disk Utility and format the SSD for use in a Mac (Erase>Set Format to MacOS Extended (Journaled), then exit Disk Utility and choose Install OSX
You will need to be connected to the Internet and your Mac should detect your network and ask for a password automatically when Recovery Starts.

  • How do I upgrade my 320gb HDD to a new 750gb HDD and install OSX?

    Hi all,
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro with a 320gb HDD, and i've bought a 750gb Western Digital HDD to replace it.
    How do I:
Install OSX on to the new 750gb Drive?
Move all my data from my 320gb drive to the new 750gb drive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers!

    Hi John,
You would have to replace the old disk with the new disk, then you can run the Mac os X installation disk and install it on your new device (when the installation starts, you first have to format the disk in the until menu if the disk is new, otherwise the installation program does not see it)
For getting the content over to your new installation... It depends what you mean with data. I replaced my disk a while ago as well and reinstalled all software manually and only copied documents, photos etc. In that case just copy your libraries (iPhoto, iTunes, iWeb domain file (if you use it)) and documents to a separate hard disk and copy them back to your Mac after the installation.
In my eyes, the best option would be to buy an external hard disk case so that you can put your old disk in that case and use it as an external usb hard disk. That makes copying your data back much easier... And this way you can still copy files even a month later (in case you forgot something, which in my case always happens ;))
    Good luck,
    Nico

  • Upgrade from 20GB 3G to 60GB Color iPod

Am considering upgrading from my current 3G 20GB to a 60GB Color iPod.
Generally, for those who have done something similar - - are you pleased?
Specifically, what 3G accessories would I be able to use with the 60GB color? (The 60GB color is a little 'thicker' than the 20GB color, I think, but I'm not sure how it compares to the 20GB 3G). Can one use the 3G docks? (I have two.) What about cables (I know I'll have to get a new A/V cable to do slideshows, but can 3G cables do sound only.) Car adapters (cassette?). Car chargers?
    Thanks for any info.
    - - Scott

Anything that plugs into the top or bottom (cables, car/tape adapters) will work.
Your docks won't. The 60 GB is the thickest dockable iPod, and I can't even come close to getting it into either of the docks around my house (4G 20 and a 3G 20).

  • Satellite M30-604 only seeing 128GB HDD capacity from a 320GB HDD

    I have a M30-604 with XP-SP2 and bios version 1.7
I've installed a new internal 2.5" 320gb hard disk - but XP disk manager only sees 128gb total capacity. There's not even any unallocated space.
Is the phoenix bios 48bit LBA compatible?

    Hi!
During the old IDE interface its only possible to use 128GB disk space and so you dont see the full capacity of 320GB.
BIOS update cant solve this problem because its hardware related and so you have to live with this issue.
Alternative you bring the 320GB HDD back and buy another one, e. g. 120GB.

  • How do i upgrade from OS 10.4.11 to 10.5 or later?

i have a powerbook G4 and am having trouble running many of the newest apps, programs and updates. they all say i need OS 10.5 or later.
however, even after searching through help pages, i'm not so sure what to purchase or install in order to make this upgrade without having to just buy OS 10.5, erasing everything i currently have and installing everything from scratch.

With a PowerPC- based Mac, your OS X upgrade capability is to Leopard OS X 10.5(.8)
via a retail install DVD; with updates to that available by download from Apple Support.
    • *Requirements for Mac OS X v10.5:*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3759
    • *Mac OS X 10.5 - Technical Specifications:*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP517
    • MacTracker - download: +read and compare+ specifications
    http://mactracker.ca (also see http://everymac.com specs)
The computer has to be capable of running the OS X version, to include adequate RAM
installed (probably to the maximum supported by the build model of computer) and also
a larger capacity replacement hard disk drive, to be rid of the likelihood of the original
HDD being near failure due to several years of use.
Also, when upgrading from one OS to another, a complete archive of the computer's
OS X and applications can be made on an external FireWire self-powered enclosure,
a boot-capable drive for a Clone. This is a method, among several, to upgrade and
to also keep use of the current system; but not have the older OS X in the computer.
{A hard disk drive upgrade could include a SSD solid-state 'drive' such as the new
Legacy SSD from OWC for the PATA/ATA computers; those which can't use SATA.
The same reseller also has a top-flight external enclosure with HDD inside, one
    with its own power supply and various port options; capable of booting Mac OS X.}
With a new drive in the computer, the current drive could reside awhile in a FW enclosure.
Ultimately, the original computer's HDD (if not replaced already) would be best upgraded.
If you seek an upgrade beyond Mac OS X 10.5(.8) Leopard, that requires an Intel-based
Mac computer; there may be some enticing ideas in Apple's online Store pages; to also
include the Special Deals - refurbished and clearance items, as available.
    • Apple - Support - *Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard* (support links, answers)
    http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/
Leopard 10.5 DVDs are considered in short supply, and various sellers have bid the price
to some higher than rational numbers. However, you may still be able to get a full official
copy from Apple; call their 1-800-MY-APPLE main number & ask to speak with a product
specialist. You'd need Leopard 10.5 DVD ($129) in order to use your PPC G4 with the new
products and software available; and if you have an iPhone or iPad that needs OS X 10.5
mention that, too. In order to support new products & a newer iTunes, you'd need Leopard.
Since development continues, and the latest software focuses on recent OS X, the 10.6
Snow Leopard and Intel-based Macs appear to be the upgrade path; ahead to 10.7...
You could get a newer model computer; even 'special deals' Macs include a recent OS X.
{Before the rush, I was able to get two Leopard DVD install sets; one, free and the other, $10.
    The idea was to upgrade two - of my four - G4 PPC Macs to 10.5.8; the other two stay 10.4.11.}
    Good luck & happy computing!
