T60p Black screen on startup

Hello, I was updating the driver for the video card (ATI Mobility FireGL V5250/Windows XP) when the screen went black and the computer froze. I had to restart but when I turned the computer on the screen went black and I heard 3 beeps (long - short - short). I tried to hook it up to a external monitor, but with no success. Can someone help me?

Beeps at start up are a bad sign sometimes.
From my experience with desktops they mean something particular about the motherboard and some bad equipment or the motherboard itself.
When you are updating drivers for GFX cards, it is many times normal to have black screen or flashings etc.
You should never stop the PC and let it do its work. Even if waiting for some time.
Try make a google search for the beeps?

    Hi
Look not good dude I think its an serious hardware issue
I checked the movie and cannot hear a beep when the notebook passes the POST (power on self-test). So for me it looks like something wrong with the hardware
But did you try to connect an external monitor in order to check if something would be visible on second screen? Check this
    You could also try this:
Disconnect AC adaptor, remove the battery, wait some time (3-5 hours), then connect both parts and try to power up the notebook. If this fails, well in such case have no many other ideas. Ohhh wait maybe you could check the RAM modules. Try to power up the notebook using one module in each slot

It's also possible that you have the NVIDIA problem:

  • Black screen on startup early 2008 macbook pro

I am very disappointed with Apple right now. My early-2008 15 inch macbook pro shows a blank/black screen on startup. The hd runs fine and I can dim and undim the backlight on the screen but it stays black/blank.
I talked to an Apple rep and she told me that it was probably my graphics card (which I asked her specifically about when I researched and found many other people like myself with the same issue and then the lawsuit that came as a result). Of course, Apple no longer replaces the graphics card (like a true business person would) as of December 2012 even though they know the cards in the macbooks pros are defective. The Apple rep told me that I would have to take it in to a Apple tech to get it "officially" diagnosed as the graphics card being bad (which would cost me @$150 just for it to be looked at!) and then I would probably still have to pay for the repair!
Of course this happened in the middle of the week while I was in the middle of working on a sermon and other presentation projects. So I had to do my best to try to work from scratch without access to the info on my hd because the graphics card is defective.
Apple, you know the card is defective so please just replace the card! I'm not asking for any perks or upgrades! Just to be able to use my Macbook Pro that, up until now, I have been bragging about and telling everyone how happy I was to switch over from windows!
    HELP!! HELP!! HELP!! HELP!!

If you experience distorted video or no video . . . take your affected product to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store to determine which service and support options are available. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
No, it has not cost anything in the past.
Note: as of Dec 7th 2012, it is unlikely products qualify for this extended repair coverage.
That does not mean it's an automatic "no."

  • IMac 27 Late 2009 with Random black screen at startup of Windows 7!

Hi, I'll try to explain the my random black screen issue as best I can.
I have a boot camp partition with Windows 7 x64 Ultimate installed.
I used the USB method to install, all goes well and Windows 7 gets installed, I update drivers, install boot camp etc. all is good, right!
My problem is that everything seems to be in working order, but the built in LED screen will only get lit/active in 1 out of 5 times at startup of Windows, eg. the built in screen stays black/off (black screen issue), like the install issue on iMac 27 I7 w/ATI 4850.
NOTE! When booting OS X the built in LED screen gets lit/active on every startup.
So what I did was connect a second LCD monitor via Display port to DVI, this monitor/screen has no issues, it gets lit/active on every startup of Windows, even if the built in screen/monitor stays black/off (black screen issue).
NOTE! I have tested both the latest drivers from Apple (10.4 19/MAR/2010, found on the USB install method) and AMD ATI Catalyst Driver (10.8 25/AUG/2010). The issue remains on both Apple released drivers and AMD ATI released drives.
    1. So to me it seems like there are some detection/communication issues between the built in monitor and the video card on Windows 7, as there is no issue detecting and activating a monitor connected to the display port.
Are we missing a monitor driver in Windows that OS X has, or is this a hardware issue that Apple knows about and compensates for in OS X with on load firmware, driver or a kernel fix?
    2. Does anyone else have this issue on their 27" iMac Late 2009 I7, ATI HD 4850 machine?
If yes, did you manage to solve it?
Thanks for any help on this issue.
    Cheers,
    Kevin

Hi, I've seem to have found out the source of the problem.
The issue is related to heat, and an iMac 27" gets hot pretty fast.
If I boot the iMac straight after first start into Windows 7 I seem to get a lit built-in display at all times. I can also boot OS X first and then into Windows 7 and the built-in screen get lit every time as long as the iMac isn't hot.
Strange thing is that the monitor connected to the display port gets lit every time. So I can only assume that the heat only interfere with output to the built-in LED screen.
So this iMac is going to an Apple premium reseller for service, and I'll tell you guys how it went.

  • Please Help: iMac black screens after startup logo + spinning wheel no cursor).

    Hi, guys.
I'm in a fair bit of a desperate situation; my iMac's screen seems to shut down every time after the white startup screen. The Apple logo appears, & the progress wheel begins spinning, then after a while - when it would usually then go to the gray login screen - it would, instead, go black. I can tell that the machine is still on (I can still hear it clicking as it does during processing) but I'm unable to determine anything else. Nothing is visible on the screen - not even the cursor - it's as if the display had turned off completely. I'm not sure if the login screen sits beneath that black screen (I have tried to log on by typing my login details in blindly, but even if it does log in, it's hard to determine what state the computer is in without seeing the screen.
I have tried the PRAM reset (holding CMD+OPT+P+R) during both the white startup screen, & the black screen to no avail. It seems unresponsive because I don't hear any additional chimes that I've been told should be heard during a PRAM reset attempt. I can't even be sure that the command is being inputted correctly because the light on my wireless keyboard remains off during the process.
I've tried rebooting over & over again; the results are the same.
The steps that led to the problem occurred thusly:
1 - I was trying to clear some memory from my current session, so I scanned through my active processes, quitting anything which seemed to be eating up considerable amounts of memory.
2 - One particular process I quit was 'launchd' which was functioning under my profile username.
3 - After quitting launchd, all opened apps seemed to close, & it looked like I was forcibly logged off the machine. The screen froze during this point, & I decided to do a hard reboot to log back in.
4 - The problem began after this hard reboot; startup seemed to occur as per usual; white screen > apple logo > progress wheel > and then suddenly, a black screen where the login screen should be.
I've shown a flashlight into the screen while it's black & it seems well & truly like the display has shut down while the iMac continues in the background. I have had issues relating to my screen going black before, but they were random & intermittent; they didn't occur without fail during the exact same time immediately after startup, & could be remedied by using the CTRL+OPT+EJT keys.
I am on an iMac 2010, 27", using I believe Lion OSX. I am unable to recall additional specifications while the problem persists.
Could anybody please help me? I'm quite desperate; I was in the middle of some urgent work that I need to get back to as soon as possible.
Thank you I'm advance to anyone with advice on how I can go about fixing this.
    ,c.

  • Black screen on startup Macbook Air 11 2013

    Hello,
I decided to reinstall my OS X 10.10
So after restart i held "cmd+r", open Disk Utility and format my ssd, then start downloading OS X 10.10
But suddenly an error appeared, and I noticed that there is no SSD in Disk Utility anymore
Then I decided to reboot my macbook and try to reinstall my OS X one more time, so i held power button for 10 sec and then start again
After this the only thing i have is a black screen
I tried reset NVRAM and SMC - no results
    Cmd+R - not working
I made installation drive and tried boot using option button - same
Every command I tried - nothing appear on the screen
Can You help me with this?
    Thanks.
    P.S. Macbook Air 11 2013 128GB MODEL A1465

You took all the reasonable actions that can be expected. Read the following Apple Support document to be sure there isn't anything you may have overlooked:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
It seems unlikely that a catastrophic failure would coincide with what you did, so perform the NVRAM and SMC resets again, making sure you did both of them properly. After that, schedule a Genius Bar Reservation.
The SMC reset procedure is linked in the above document. The NVRAM reset is as follows:
    NVRAM reset:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • IBook G4 black screen at startup with code in upper left hand corner

I have had operating system issues for the past year, and recently had my OS reinstalled at a Mac Professional retailer. After two weeks of perfect performance, the chime stopped working on startup. This was the only problem for several days. Then when I would put it to sleep, the computer would not automatically turn back on, I had to manually reboot it. Finally, today, after the computer would not wake up and I had restarted it, the screen would flash to the apple logo screen WITHOUT the spinning wheel and after several seconds would shift to an all black screen with text in the upper right hand corner, waiting for a command entry.
    The code reads as follows:
    hfsswapBTNode: invalid node kind (-9)
    node=22016 fileID=4 volume=Macintosh HD device=root_device
    -sh-2.05b#
    Any ideas?????

Put the install disc in the drive and start while holding the "c" key. Once satrted click through past the language screen and select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Highlight the drive on the left and click the Repair button. If it reports errors and repairs repeat the process until no errors are reported. If it reports errors it can't repair post the error message here.

  • Mac Pro weirdness, black screen on startup

    2009 Macpro with Mavericks.
Running the machine off an ssd with a bootcamp partition, 3 other drives mostly for storage and time machine.
Sometimes, not often, when I restart into OS X after using win 7 in bootcamp the mac stalls on the apple screen, pressing the power button and restarting fixes this. Annoying.
Today we had a new one it just statred up onto a black screen, fans going, but no picture.
I did this a couple of times to no avail.
I pressed the power button to restart once more and just as I pressed it the screen came back to life.
So maybe a faulty power button or maybe a loose video card, I'll reseat the video card and see if it happens again.
So if you are having this problem, look into this.

Thanks for the replies. I'm on vacation at the moment and don't have the proper tools to remove the aluminum cover to get at the RAM.
Upon startup I hear a beep folowed by the optical (DVD) drive making some noise as if it wants to read a DVD but there is nothing in the drive. Then I get another beep followed by the optical drive noise. This happens cyclically like this indefinitely. I am using the laptop to charge my iphone. While it's beeping/cd drive is making noise I can still charge my iphone, so I think the battery is ok.
    Thanks again for you help!

    Hi Roks
It is not easy to say what the problem can be but I presume there is something wrong with HDD. It will be interesting what happen with new HDD.
If possible start also recovery procedure to see if the HDD will be recognized properly and if recovery procedure starts properly. Check it using expert mode installation where you have access to HDD info (partitions and so on).

  • HELP! Black screen after startup after Yosemite installation

    Urgent help please.
I Have a late 2010 MacBook Pro and today installed Yosemite. It appeared to install ok, but now on startup it gets past the apple logo screen then just goes to a black screen with a cursor. I have attempted a safe boot, and it manages to get to the login screen, but it won't accept my password, it just keeps on loading the login screen over and over. Would love an answer please...I am completely puzzled!

Ok, I am a couple of days ahead of you. I had exactly the same issus on a mid 2010 mid MBP. Mine failed after the install, although it worked fine for a few minutes untill it went into Sleep. When it came back on it was in color But you could not really see, Another reset and all went black.
After an hour on the phone with support on Sunday who suggested trying a system management reset. Solved nothing. I went to my Genius apt on Monday.  Two hours and 15 minutes waiting in line And finally I got my Genus.
Again a nice guy trying to help, but other than pulling the connector to the screen and getting back my comprised color negative screen no real progress. "I know it sounds like a strange coincidence but maybe you display went bad."  Well perhaps you can get hit by lighting twice in a row while humming "Oh, What a beautiful morning" but I did not think so.
I was more lucky back at home. I recently installed an SSD, so I took it out and booted with the old drive and booted 10.9.5. Display was fine. So this proved the issuse was Yosemite install. Here is the good news, when I put the SSD back in everything was great. i know you can't do exactly what I did. Here is what I suggest..
I believe the issuse is bad video driver with Yosemite during the install.   rreinstall Maverick or boot from another drive with OPTION. . I believe it will work fine. Then if you are lucky perhaps your Yosemite will work as mine did...

  • [BIOS Update Failure] HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j021tx stuck at black screen on startup

    Hello
So I decided to update the BIOS on my laptop because it was on the recommended list of driver updates. It started off smooth at first, but then the screen turned black and just stayed like that for like an hour. Having read from other posts that BIOS updates should take a minute if properly executed, in the fear that my update is not working properly I decided to shut it down. (I had to pull out the battery to shut it down because even the power off button was not working).
But then when I switched it back on the screen remained black forever with the LED near capslock flashing twice. I tried pressing windows key and B key method but didn't make a difference, pulling out the battery and the AC power method didn't work also. I did refer to the HP help document that said "if your capslock LED is flashing twice, it means it is trying to recover the BIOS so just wait until it reboots itself properly". Well I have been waiting for 20 hours now and I am pretty sure this is not going to work out either.
Any help on what I could do at the moment? I don't want to send it to HP to get repaired cuz that will take weeks while I need it working ASAP since my semester at uni has started already and I am an IT major!
And shame on you HP...why recommend it to me when the update is not proven to be 100% safe....
It is on Windows 8.1 64 bit,
