T60p Hard Drive Errors in Diagnostics Test

I recently started having problems with my internal hard drive. It is just over 1 year old, a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 5400rpm, 8MB cache.. While trying to extract a few zips, I started getting an I/O Device Error message. I ran a CHKDSK and fixed all the bad sectors. However, even after running the checkdisk, I am still getting errors in the ThinkVantage Diagnostic Tool.
I have a T60p, model 8743-CTO. Running Windows 7 with 2x1GB RAM.
Here are the hard drive errors I found with the diagnostics tool.
FAILED: Targeted Read Test - Error Code WHD20-P5V
Error while reading sector 6033483899
FAILED: Surface Scan Test - 2: Error Code WHD08-HMV
There were over 10 sectors with errors
Is my hard drive really failing? Like I said, its a WD Scorpio Blue that I bought just over a year ago, I think they should last longer than a year.
Any thoughts?

Hello,
Sometimes hard disk drives fail prematurely.
Just to verify the issue is with the hard disk drive, you might want to remove it from the ThinkPad and connect it to another computer.  The data and power connectors are standard, so this should not be a problem, as long as there is another computer with available connectors.  From there, you can check the drive further, as well as back up any valuable data which might be on the hard disk drive.

  • Recurring Hard Drive Errors/Crashes After Replacing Repeatedly

I've got a 2007 2GHz Macbook. I've been having repeated hard drive errors for the past few months. First the original hard drive went 100% dead. I replaced it with a Hitachi 350 Gig. After repeated serious hard drive crashes and reformats, I replaced it again with a brand new Western Digital 350 Gig hard drive. However, I am having continued problems with this one now, Invalid Extent entries every couple days, and major errors if I don't run disk utility every other day.
This is leading me to believe that the issue isn't related to the hard drive since I've had similar problems three times in a row. Has anybody else encountered this? Could the problem be elsewhere?

    +I'm assuming that's a bad ram module, am I correct?+
Perhaps, but I'm sorry to report there is much uncertainty about this. See the search of these boards I've added at the bottom, and refer to each listing and its resolution (if reported).
There is usually a "Details" section of the Apple Hardware Test report about the memory - did you see that section of the results?
If not seen, or if it was not reported, open the utility "System Profiler" and look at the "Diagnostics" section to see general results of that last AHT which you ran, and also you should see there the latest results of the "Power On Self-Test" that runs each time a Mac starts up. The normal "Result" for both lines reads: "Passed"
Also check the "Memory" section of System Profiler to see the size, type, speed and "Status" of each individual memory module - your MacBook should have two modules in it, and the "Status" report for each should be "OK"
If your Mac is not covered by AppleCare, it's probably best to use a process of elimination to find the source of the problem.
Are you using your MacBook without an external keyboard and mouse? Those might possibly be the cause of a problem, if connected.
As long as you have the original grey-label Install Disc in the optical drive, your MacBook will startup without a hard drive inside, as the Install Disc contains all the operating instructions that are necessary for the MacBook to operate the Install Disc and everything on it.
It is easy to remove the internal hard drive to eliminate a potential problem source. If corruption of the hard drive is a repeated issue, it would be best to eliminate this hard drive from the mix for testing purposes.
Just as important, as long as you have the original grey-label Install Disc that contains the AHT, the MacBook will startup to the Apple Hardware Test by pressing and holding the d key, again without a hard drive installed.
It is very easy to remove RAM modules from a MacBook for visual inspection to see what markings are on the labels as to size, type and speed. Verify that System Profiler is reporting the same info as is marked on the labels.
Assuming everything is as it should be, replace one module, close up the Mac, and after starting up to the Install Disc, check what the utility "System Profiler" is showing in the "Memory" section of its limited System Profiler. If the Mac starts up cleanly and System Profiler reads "OK" move that module to the other memory slot and same procedure.
If the Mac again starts up cleanly to the Install Disc and System Profiler again reads "OK" next startup from and run the Apple Hardware Test with only that one module to see if it gets a clean bill of health.
If it's ok, then remove that module and set it aside as being a tentatively "known good" module.
Repeat all on the second module by it's self. At this point, you should probably have learned which module is bad - however, if not, go through it all again with both modules installed.
Hopefully by the end, you will have determined a resolution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to correct, such as replacing the logic board. Good luck with it:)

  • Hard drive error on boot: HD6 3F6

My PC is usually left on all the time.  I recently went away on holiday for 2 weeks and powered off (it is winter here so the house is cold a lot of the time - this may be relevant as colder conditions seem to make the following issue worse).  When I returned and powered on I got a blue screen hard drive error message "HD6 3F6".  I now get this message at every reboot, but also about every 12 hours on average the computer goes off by itself and I get it again, though it varies from a few hours to a few days.  I follow the instruction to launch diagnostics F2 and have run all sorts of tests - every time it passes the tests so I proceed to boot normally.  This process now seems to take a lot longer than it used to, but at least the PC does boot as normal.  The PC is only about 15 months old and I had to have the motherboard replaced a few months ago under warranty as a BIOS upgrade killed it.  I have had a few issues with Windows Explorer shutting itself down a lot recently.  Please advise what to do, thanks.

Hello , I have read your post on how your desktop computer is displaying an error message "HD6 3F6" on a blue screen, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! Since the hard drive diagnostics indicated in this document came up with no issues, I recommend following the steps in this document on Computer Locks Up or Freezes (Windows 8). This should help correct the appearance of a blue screen.  If the issue continues, please contact our technical support for further assistance in this matter by clicking the link below to get the support number for your region.

Sorry to say it means what it says. Your hard drive needs to be replaced. There is no workaround.

  • Problem fixing hard drive errors

I own Toshiba Satellite A250. My hard drive is probably before major failure. I am trying to fix the errors as running the command chkdsk c:/f  from command prompt but this can't fix the errors.
    How should i proceed?
I don't know what exactly is wrong with the hard drive but sometimes when starting laptop it freezes right after loading the bios. I thought it is a problem with the bios but it seems that it is a problem with the hard drive.

How did you test the RAM? Use www.memtest.org
It could be a mainboard or VGA Board failure.

I believe your hard drive has failed. Hope you have a backup.

  • Data recover from a hard drive error 301

Can anyone advise me of how to recover data from a hard drive error 301.  I have a pavilion dv7-4177 and i received the hard drive error code 301 two weeks after the warranty expired. I back up my data so I though but when tried to reload that data on a new hard drive it would not take. The damage hard drive will not load the OS now even in safe mode. Is there any way to retrieve this data from that hard drive.

    Hi,
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your files.

  • My Time Capsule is reporting hard drive errors.

    Hi all,
My Time Capsule has been reporting hard drive errors. Unfortunately the problem started right outside of its warranty period. I formatted the drive twice, first time was a quick format, second was a single pass 0 write.
My question is: Now what can I do to make this unit reliable again.
I've seen a lot of these reports. This is exactly why I was hesitant to buy the Time Capsule. The sad thing is Apple advertised this as a server grade back-up device. After just over a year of service, I can no longer count on my Apple branded back-ups.
I'd like to see Apple step up to the plate and rectify this issue for those of us who are experiencing the failure. They've extended warranty periods before when it was clear the product had so many field failures. It's the least they can do.

Ring and ask them.. or go into the local store.
Their local store managers have some flexibility.
Especially if an item is just out of warranty.
You cannot buy applecare for a TC. But applecare on any computer will also cover the TC.. and if you want a cheap way into applecare to cover your TC, buy an Apple TV and buy applecare on that.. then Apple will replace your TC, and you can sell off the unopened ATV.
Total cost is pretty much just the applecare on atv which is cheap.
If you want to replace the disk yourself you can do it easily.

  • Apple Diagnostics Hard Drive Error

My new 2012 Mac Mini Server has been unstable since I purchased it in mid-December from Apple. I ran Apple Diagnostics twice this evening and received hard drive message- "ERROR-Reading took longer than average time-TEST FAILED-" . Apple telephone support is closed and so I'm not able put the question to them and wonder if anyone in the Community could shed some light on this. It is an SSD drive and has passed the Disk First Aid tests but got a failure on the Apple Support Diagnostics test.

I used the "Apple Server Diagnostics EFI 3xIIIv5 for Mac Mini Server (late 2012)" on the Apple Support Site.
The test done was "Hard Drive SATA (0,0) (Test1)-Full Read Test (1-4 Hours, DMA Full Read Scan) Reads the entire HD checking for slow-read failures."
The result was "ERROR-Reading took longer than the average time. -TEST FAILED-".
As I mentioned earlier, the disk passed Disk First Aid's verify and permissions tests.
The system has generated 8 Kernel Panic Reports and has experienced numerous freezes and spinning balls since an authorized Apple service center installed the OWC Mercury SSD, Yosemite and 1TB 2nd drive in the two week old 2012 Mac Mini Server from Apple's web site.. The most common spinning balls as of late are upon waking from sleep and when clicking on the Macintosh SSD boot disk icon on the desktop.
I've spent time with Apple's telephone support over the past few days. The boot drive was wiped and Yosemite reinstalled. No issues for about 5 hours and then back to it's old instable ways san Kernel Panics. BTW, the only software on the machine is the bundled apps and Apple's Final Cut Pro.
I have an appointment with the Apple Store Genius Bar on Tuesday. The other Apple certified service center where the drives were installed wanted $100 to test the system since the drives were purchased from OWC and not directly from them. So let's see what Apple says.
    Thanks everyone for you input.

  • Quick Test Hard Drive Error

I ran a quick test hard drive test from the HP Diagnostics menu on a computer I am having issues with installing windows on.
The test failed and I got the following Failure ID which I can't find on the HP site or through Bing.
    Failure ID: U7N3M1-0007K9-XD6V6J-60TG03

    Hi,
The above failure ID refers to Hard disk drive failure. You have to replace the HDD and then reinstall the Operating system using recovery disk.   If the unit is still under warranty, then call the HP Support and they will replace it.

  • How do I fix Hard drive errors on my macbook pro?

I ran the etrecheck software on my Macbook Pro and it produced the following results. It says there are 15 errors with the hard drive and I was wondering how I can figure out what they are and possibly find a solution to get rid of them. I have used the disk utility to verify and repair permissions and to verify the disk and the only issue i get during that is this warning during verifying permissions:
Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
I also should mention my computer has been running slower than normal lately.
Another point is that there is a user launch agent that fails and I was wondering if I need it and how I can fix or get rid of it.
If anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thank you,
    Joe

  • T61 hard drive error

    hello everyone,
I have had my lenovo t61 for over 6 months now, and till yesterday it was a rock solid machine. However I have now encountered a problem that is really posing problems for me. I would appreciate it if you guys can have a look at the symptoms and help me out
    Lenovo T61
    Windows XP Professional
    Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo
    2 GB Ram
yesterday after i booted the system up, the 'processing' light (the one that flickers with CPU activity) would not stop flickering even half an hour after the system had booted up. Loading of programs had tremendously slowed, with some refusing to open and some not responding. I rebooted, same problem. I system restored to a week back when I wasnt experiencing any of this, but no change. Upon checking the task manager, everything was at 0 except for system idle process which was at 99. CPU showed a use of 4%, which seemed normal. But the processing light kept flickering and programs would be extremely slow to load.
I left the PC on and came back after a couple of hours and I saw a blackscreen with white letters (like DOS) saying I had a 'hard disk initialization error'. Next time I booted I listened to the CPU closely, its not making random sounds, but seems to be stuck in a loop, the same kind of whirring just repeats over and over again.
Next I booted in safe mode with networking, the processing light flickering was reduced and I tried to backup my system... but many files would not copy and I got an I/O error for these...
I did some googling on this and one possible solution I got was upgrading the bios to version 2.14-1.08 (april 2, 2008). Now Im not sure if I should do this, incase the entire thing becomes worse.
I would appreciate any advise you can give me.
    Thanks so much

@ alap. welcome to the forum,
please try the following two suggestions; remove and reinsert the hard drive to esure that it is connected properly. If this doesn't help, download and create a bootable cd from the iso file of Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test.
    @ cputrooper, also welcome,
I suggest you should also try both of the above. Are you hearing a specific number of long / short beeps? Calling service was a good call    HDD removal is the same as for T61.
Please let all know how you the results.

  • SATA cable - cause hard drive errors?

    Hi,
Apologies for yet another post...I've been inundating you with questions in the past week!
My iMac is in for repair, after having the flashing question mark appear and not being able to see the drive in disk utility. Tech Tools scan also showed about 30 errors on the surface scan of the drive. The repair place has just called and left a message that the problem was the SATA cable, and that they've fixed it with a new cable. My question is - would a faulty SATA cable cause errors on the drive? I'm guessing they haven't even checked that, they've just got the drive communicating again....I have very little faith in this place, I must admit.... but just thought I'd ask the question here..
    Thanks in advance.

If you already replaced the hard drive you should know where the cables are and where they go. One is the SATA power cable that goes directly to the power supply and the other is the SATA data cable that goes to the motherboard.
So disconnect the data cable from the HDD and from the motherboard and buy the same length cable at any PC shop or web site. SATA data cables are standard and nothing unique. Just remember where the motherboard connector is.
Freezes can be caused by lots of different things and I'd investigate those before replacing the data cable.
Have you run the diagnostics on the RAM, which is a frequent cause of freezes? Have you reseated the RAM modules in their slots? Do you have the latest drivers, eg video driver, for your hardware?
Are there any updates to your apps and software?
Do the freezes happen when you're running a specific app? Since this seems to happen on the Linux partition is something not fully compatible with Linux..?

  • IBook hard drive errors

My brother's iBook G4 12" started freezing randomly, and when I tried to run disk utility it would give me lots and lots of errors. Apple Hardware Test spit some errors which I don't remember (unfortunately), and then the hard drive stopped showing up at all.
I bought a new 80G disk, and after swapping them, got about 90% into the Tiger install when it locked up completely. After forcing a reboot, the hard drive isn't recognized once again. Apple Hardware Test is giving "2STF/4/3: ATA- 100 ATA- 6 - Master".
Does this point more towards the ATA controller dying or did I somehow just get a lemon drive?
I have an external enclosure but it's either broken or a piece of junk, because -every- drive I've ever used in it has acted funny. It'll lock up the computer trying to read files and whatnot. I wouldn't trust it to give me an accurate result.
If anyone has any tips I'd appreciate it, as my brother needs his computer pretty bad and I don't really know where to go from here.
    thanks,
    Isaac

That's what I'm leaning towards. I'm going to have both drives tested by a friend and I'm also going to drop the $19.95 to replace the drive cable. If it still tests bad then I guess I have to replace the logic board.
Is it possible to replace the logic board with one with a 1.33GHz processor (it's an 800MHz iBook)?
    Thanks,
    Isaac
