T60p Harddrive upgrade opinions

I have a T60p model 2613CTO with an original 60GB 7200 RPM harddrive.  I'm looking to upgrade.  What are your thoughts on harddrives?
I like the WD Scorpio Black 320GB 7200rpm/16mb with free-fall sensor vs. any number of 500GB 5400rpm/8mb drives and no sensor.
From your experience, what do you think about the rpm?  Sensor yes or no?  Size? Is there another brand out there with a good free-fall sensor?
Thanks in advance.

OEM drives will not function.

But the drive in my T60 that I installed myself [non-lenovo] works with APS. It packs the drive when I move the system and the on screen activity halts for a second or two. Do you think APS is faking it?

  • Harddrive Upgrade - Please Help needs to be done ASAP

I have the MC375LL/A 13.3/2.66/4GB/320 Macbook Pro which I purchased November 2010.  The hard drive only has about 30gb of space left because I have lots of photos, movies & music.  I am looking to upgrade my hard drive to a WD Scorpio 1 TB Internal Hard drive 5400 RPM (UPC: 718037753119 or Model WDBABC0010BNC-NRSN).  Is this hard drive okay to use in my Macbook Pro? Will it work with apple energy conservation software & it’s motion detection software?  Is there another hard drive that I should be looking at aside from the one list? Please Help.

I can also get the one listed below which is a Seagate.

  • More space used after a harddrive upgrade

I just upgraded my MabBook HD from 500GB to 750GB. I "Reinstall" Mac OS X 10.8.4 and then used Migration Assit to bring over all my old "stuff", settings, etc.
My old 500GB drive used 330.52GB and the new 750GB is using 453.5GB. Why the 122.98GB increase?
       New 750GB                                      Old 500GB

I found the problem... there was a "_CCC Arcive" folder with 8 folders from the past 2 years with misc stuff that amounted to the increase of used space. I have no idea where that came from.

  • Harddrive upgrade question

I have an early '09 Macbook with a 160gb hard drive. I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive to a 500 gb hard drive, but I also plan on getting a Brand new Macbook Pro in about a year before going off to College for film editing. Basically I want to know:
    1. What kind of Hard Drive should I get? Someone point me in the right direction as to from where or so.
    2. Is the hard drive compatible with my older Macbook and the New Mac Book Pro's. Is there a set type or what?

You can use any SATA notebook drive. Start at macsales.com. No doubt any notebook drive will be compatible with today's Macs as well as tomorrow's. You can find some reviews at Bare Feats, Storage Review, and Tom's Hardware Review.

  • Harddrive Upgrade Question: is my disk utility stalled out?

I recently decided to upgrade my HD on my MacBook. I have an iMac that I decided to write a disk image of the MacBook HD to, in order to get my content on to the new drive. So I used my Leopard install disc to start disc utility and copy the HD image. Its been making read/write noises for about 4 hours now, but the mouse arrow has disappeared, the progress line appears frozen, and I'm wondering if it crashed. Anyone experienced this before?

Well in my disk utility says that you can change the format in burning WINDOWS CDs. Or I'm understanding that wrong?
That doesn't mean that you pre-format the CD; i.e. do something with it before you burn your data, as would be the case with a floppy or a new hard drive. Perhaps you're referring to the disk image you're creating?
So I just copy that CD just like I do with my Mac CDs?
That's what I do when I need to copy a Windows CD; I just make a disk image of it using Disk Utility, and then burn the image, just as I would a Mac CD. No need to create a blank disk image and then alter it's format. Just make the image directly from the CD you want to copy.

  • Upgrade opinions

I have a powerbook 1.67 G4 with 2g ram, 80G HD, but it is running some necessary programs too slow. I use Adobe CS3, photoshop, illustrator, indesign, and I also use the original Aperture program. I wanted to upgrade to a Macbook Pro, but am short on cash. What would anyone recommend? would it be worth my time to get one of the earlier MBP, like the 2ghz, 15 inch? I was also thinking maybe instead getting an imac. Will I see much of a difference with these programs on the earlier intel macs? Thank you for all your help

I would recommend the application Blitz ( http://blitzapp.com/ ) if you are going to go for the laptop instead of the iMac. I have been using it for a while and it does help out when doing projects in photoshop and other intensive applications.

  • Graphics card upgrade opinions requested.

I have an older MacPro (2010) Quad core, 2.8 Ghz, 16 GB RAM with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card.  I am trying to get the most out of this machine before buying a new one (hopefully not before the end of the year).  I use After Effects CC daily for motion graphics (very little 3-D stuff)...would like to get advice...  Will an upgrade in graphics card to Sapphire HD 7950 show improved performance?  How about GeForce GTX 680?

The GPU is used very little by After Effects. See this page for details:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2012/05/gpu-cuda-opengl-features-in-after-effects-cs6. html
Spend your money on SSDs, RAM, and a better CPU before you consider spending money on a new GPU.

  • Hard drive upgrade opinions

    Hello to all,
I need more info about upgrading my mac mini 1.83 intel HD and want to go to 7200 rpm.
Am thinking of getting one from the list below:
    1. Hitachi 7K320
    2. WD2500BJKT
I know there are not the same size, but what I need is a HD that will stay cool as the stock one and not to have roaring fans.
So the Q is, what would be better and run cooler.
    Thanks and best regards
    Sven

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay. With the mini switched on for around 20 mins with no apps running, the stats are as follows:
    Fan speed: 1507 rpm
    Temperatures:
    Hard Drive: 37
    CPU A: 42
    CPU A Heatsink: 38
    Ambient: 37
    Northbridge 1: 43
    Northbridge 2: 42
They're not too bad really. The fan mostly stays between 1500 and 3000. While I've been typing this it has stayed at 1500.
Hope that helps with your decision.
    David.

  • Harddrive Upgrade Compatability (Please read....)

PLEASE HELP!!! I have a HP dv8305us laptop and my harddrive failed.  I was looking at the Western Digital 320 gb/5400 rpm/8 mb cache harddrive.  Is this compatible for my laptop?  Also the transfer rate is 3 gb/s max.  Would this work normal if i install it on my laptop?
    I know my laptop currently came with 80 gb/5400 rpm/100 mb/s.
    So can it support 320 gb/5400 rpm/3 gb/s???
If not, what's the maximum specs it can support?  Please help, i dont want to buy the wrong harddrive.
    Thanks!

The picture in the Manual definitely shows a PATA/IDE hard drive (dual rows of pins) and the table at page 173 clearly says ATA (IDE) 5 or 6....in other words NOT SATA. I have worked on dv8000s and the older ones are PATA drives and then at some point in the series they became SATA. Exactly where I am not sure but I looked on 2 or 3 parts websites and they were selling PATA/IDE drives as replacements for your exact model. I am possibly mistaken, though and your drive could well be a SATA. You can resolve the issue yourself. Pull the old drive and see what it is. It will take 5 minutes.

  • Displayport sound and harddrive upgrade questions

    1. I'm thinking to buy a Displayport to HDMI cable. One review I read online claimed that Thinkpad T500's Displayport doesn't support sound. It raised my concern. Does my T410 support sound?
    2. If I buy a new hard drive, how to copy the OS (Windows 7) to the new hard drive? I don't have disks. I don't think I have to pay for a new OS, do I?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, the T410 does support audio over Displayport
    2. You could always make the R&R discs before installing the new harddrive or clone the harddrive.

  • Macbook Pro Harddrive Upgrade Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10TPVT

I recently purchased a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drive (WD10TPVT) in order to replace the 500GB hard drive in my Unibody Macbook Pro 15" running Mac OS X 10.6.4.
After swapping the hard drives I wanted to install Snow Leopard from the scratch on the empty hard drive. I partitioned the hard drive and started the install, but after about 30 min the computer seems to freeze. I tried several times, and each time the behavior is similar. After swapping the hard drives again (back to the old hard drive) I connected the WD10TPVT via an external USB enclosure, and now it works fine - over an extended period of time. So I'm fairly sure the drive itself is working properly.
I did some research, and it seems that people had similar issues with this drive (e.g. a thread in this forum titled "WD 1TB WD10TPVT in Late 2009 15" Unibody Macbook Pro - NEED HELP!" from April 15). It seems to me that this issue is old but still unresolved, and I wonder if there are any new developments concerning this problem. Is there a "generic" solution?
Another question: the WD10TPVT has 4 additional pins next to the ribbon cable connector. I didn't find any documentation on this, but I assume that these are jumper pins. I found some information that certain jumper configurations will/will not work in the Macbook Pro, but no details on this. What jumper settings do I need to get the WD10TPVT running in my Macbook Pro?
    Thanks a lot!

There are known issues with replacement HD's on 2009 MBP (and, posibly other models too).
According to Apple support, it is due to acceleration sensor, which in MBP requires HD to have custom firmware.
There was even a fix to solve this issue (which I cannot find now, and it actually didn't solve much).
So far, the best "fix" seems to be to install HD with Apple firmware (works 100%). There are reports that certain drives without acceleration sensor are working properly too, a bit expensive to try, though.
Still a mystery why Apple does not clearly warn about this issue.

  • Harddrive upgrade -- OS X instillation woes.  What did I do?

    Hello,
Recently I purchased a 1.33 iBook on ebay for my wife. Upon receiving it I swapped out the 40GB with a Seagate 100GB. I then installed OS 10.4 (not the iBook grey discs, but the retail version)
Well this caused problems, no mouse trackpad use, and more.
Now, the iBook install discs aren't recognized. Either they don't mount, or the computer says that it's blank or does not recognize it.
Oh, I did Erase the 100 with OS Journaled.
Now, I've never owned a computer so new that the OS retail version was older than the computer's needs.
What do I do now? I'm real close to reinstalling the 40. But if anyone can tell me how to fix this problem I'd appreciate it.
I've tried everything from target disc installing (with a 10.4.6) to external DVD drive istall.
If no one has a resolution... can someone atleast tell me what I've done?
    Thanks,
    Dzve

I then installed OS 10.4 (not the iBook grey discs, but the retail version)
Your 1.33GHz G4 iBook does not support using the retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4. Take a look at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
Chances are the "build" of Mac OS X 10.4 on the retail disks is not new enough to support your iBook. I would make sure to get the original disks with your eBay purchase. If they're not available, you can get a set of original install disks from AppleCare Support for about $60.

  • Lost mail on upgrade

I recently updated a friend's computer from Tiger to Leopard(10.4 to 10.5) and though I have tried what I think is everything, all of the emails are gone. I had previously upgraded her from to tiger(to 10.4) and at that time I remember that it was a real pain to import her emails and this time they just do not exist.
During the previous update I had to export her emails from os x mail.app 1 to entourage and then to the new mail.app 2 because for some reason it would not import correctly. After I did that, though, all seemed to be fine. Then she had some imported mailboxes which she kept for reference and then made a whole new set of folders in 10.4 mail.app 2.x and all seemed okay.
The upgrade was a little bit of a strange procedure because she has an imac flat panel with a g4 processor(unsupported for 10.5 installation). So I had to use Super Duper to clone to a GUID partitioned harddrive, upgrade and then clone back(I won't go into details but it took forever mostly because of the USB 1.1 only ports) Everything else works perfectly including time machine, which I had read might be a problem. The only thing wrong is that all of the mail is lost.
Now I have still an original clone of her old hard drive for backup so I have been taking runs at trying to fix it but am coming up empty.
Tried: in mail using the import function pointing it at the old hard drive's Username/Library/Mail folder. This comes up with mailboxes but no items in them
Tried: copying the entire username/library/mail folder over to the same spot as well as the appropriate .plist file with no luck, again it gets mailboxes with nothing in them.
Tried: emailchemy pointing it at the old mail folder, nothing
then I started reading more about the emlx files etc. and I looked at the username/library/mail folder for emlx files and the funny thing is that there aren't any. All there are are mbox files.
So I think from all I've read that 10.4 mail stored all messages in emlx format and those are supposed to be in the mbox in messages seen as a whole bunch of individual files but either these are gone magically or I can't see them. Or maybe because of the old import this has somehow messed things up.
    any more suggestions?

Well, kind of. When Super Duper was running it repaired the disk permissions before copying over the information. So in that way disk permissions were repaired several times along the way.
I now have copied the username/library/mail folder over to a zip drive and am running filesalvage on it to see if it can see any emlx files lost in there.
One other strange thing of note is that the mail folder is 1.91 Gigs in size normally but if I compress it it becomes 16Mb in size. This kind of speaks to the fact that it is structure but missing the content???
