T61 7658-CTO PROCESSOR UPGRADE HELP!

Hello Everyone,
I am sorry for not knowing much about computers, but all I have read are forums/etc...
I have a Lenovo T61 7658-CTO, and it came stock with Windows Vista 32bit. I have now upgraded it to Windows 7  Ultimate 64bit, and put a 256GB SSD in it.  I also upgraded to 8GB of RAM (even though it may have not been necessary).  My T61 is out of warranty, so I don't care about mods/alterations. I am hoping to now to upgrade the processor but I could use some help!
The Processor is currently an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7800, 2.60 GHz, 800 MHz Speed Bus, 4 MB L2 Cache Memory (Mfg P/N: 41U5633 , FRU P/N: 42W7848 , CDPOP Merom DC T7800).
If anyone can help me answer the following, I would be greatly appreciative:
1.  Can this Processor be Upgraded?
2.  Can a Quad Core be put in place of this Duo Core?
3.  What is the fastest / most powerful Processor I can buy that would be able to replace my current one?
4.  Does anyone recommend any place in NYC that can install the upgrade?
THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE....

Welcome to the forum!
1) Yes, but you'll need a modded (non-Lenovo) BIOS in order to install a Penryn CPU.
2) No.
3) Depends on how far you're willing to go. I've got a X9000 (2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo Extreme) in one of my custom builds, but that's a $250 CPU. You could go with a T9500 which is a 2.6 GHz conventional Core 2 Duo with Penryn core and can be found under $100.
4) You can do it yourself within an hour, trust me. A lot safer than taking it into Best Buy or some random shop...

George

  • T61 7658-CTO compatible 2GB RAM stick?

I have a T61 7658-CTO that I'd like to bring up to the maximum 3GB of RAM that will run with Windows Vista 32-bit. Can someone link me to a 2GB stick that will be compatible with one of the existing 1GB ones?
I think this one might be compatible, but I need some a little more hardware savvy to check.

If you know of a better or cheaper alternative, I'm all ears. (I don't ever plan to upgrade to a 64-bit OS on this machine, so I don't need to spend the extra money for a 2x2 kit  unless there's some other compelling reason.)

The DIMM that you're interested in will work just fine.
    Happy upgrading.

  • What is the vents color of T61 7658-CTO

Does anyone have a T61 7658-CTO laptop? What is the color of vents at the left side? Do all T series  have the same vent color, like copper yellow? Thank.

as long as the serial no./model no. displayed in the motherboard bios (which you can see when you enter the bios) matches that on the laptop sticker, then that should USUALLY indicate it is not aftermarket assembly.
So you are experiencing something out of ordinary with your laptop?
FYI, my 7660 T61 14.1 inch widescreen uses an aluminium fin.

  • Upgrade T61 6457-CTO to Windows 7 (64 bit)?

    HI,
I have a T61  6457-CTO running windows XP pro.  After 2 years of multiple versions of office & Adobe Creative Suite as well as other software, it is now very sluggish.  Since I am getting new office & Adobe software I thought I might I upgrade to Windows 7 (64 bit).  I only have 2 GB of RAM, but I can upgrade that to 4 Gb.
    I have a few questions:
     - Can I run the 64 bit version?  I ran the Windows upgrade advisor & the hardware was fine - it was the lenovo software that would have potential problems.  I assume that lenovo support has all the drivers that I would need?
    -  What is involved in installing the new OS?
    - How does the computer know to switch from the 32 bit to 64 bit?
    - will I lose the lenovo partition & all the lenovo software?  Do I care?
    - Has anyone had problems with this switch?
Is windows 7 much faster on this machine? especially with the web & graphic software I am using?
My other option is to restore my computer to factory settings & load the new software.
Any suggestions?   I appreciate any advice or comments on how this upgrade might have gone for you.

    Hello,
There is no automatic migration path from Microsoft Windows XP to Microsoft Windows 7, nor is there a migration path between 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions of Windows, although it may be possible to do this with third party tools.  This means a clean installation, followed by reloading the applications and data.
I run 64-bit versions of Windows 7 on a ThinkPad T61 (Type: 7664-1LU) and a T61p (Type: 6459-CTO), so given my experiences, along with your own report from the Windows Upgrade Advisor it sounds like you have a 64-bit system.  You can also verify this by running a program such as Intel's Processor Identification Utility, which will tell you if your CPU supports EMT64, which is Intel's name for a 64-bit architecture.
Once you have finished installing Windows 7, you can install Lenovo's ThinkVantage System Update software, which will download and install all remaining ThinkVantage drivers and software for your T61.
I've always done clean installs of Windows 7 to a new hard disk drive on my ThinkPads, so I am unsure of what happens to the Lenovo service and recovery partition.  More information about upgrading to Windows 7 on ThinkPads can be found here on Lenovo's support web site, so maybe the answer can be found there.

  • Processor Upgrade for iMac G3

Hello, I didn't see any particular posts specifically pertaining to the slot loading iMac (Graphite)..I hope someone can help me out.
I have a G3 Graphite iMac, upgraded RAM currently running Tiger. I used to use it but wiped it clean, re-installied the OS and created a separate account for my 8y/o son, so essentially there aren't many apps on there. For some reason it's running slower than it should, even with just Safari open. Is there a fix or possibly a processor upgrade for this model (I keep seeing that there isn't, but I want to be sure).
It's either that or constantly hearing my son complain of the lagtime and ask for our laptops instead...

According to Mactracker at one point there was a 700 MHz model available in Graphite & Snow. If you could find a 700 MHz G3 CRT iMac logic board on eBay it might be possible to upgrade the processor speed. You could also install a Matshita SR-8184 or SR-8186 DVD-ROM drive.
There's firmware available for both drives that allow them to be flashed to RPC1 or region free meaning they can play DVDs from any region in the world. Normally the drive is restricted to being able to only play Region 3 DVDs from the US. If you order a Matshita SR-8184CD optical drive from www.welovemacs.com call their 800 number listed on their website & be sure to ask for Jessica or Faith since some of the optical drives they sell don't have RPC1 firmware available for them.

  • T61 7659 CTO, Bluetooth BCD-2 built in yes or no?

    Dear T61 community,
am somewhat stuck with my Bluetooth issue on the
    T61 7659-CTO,  running on Vista 32bit SP1
in front of me, and would ask you for a clear statement:
Is a chance left that the T61 has Bluetooth built-in?
    I am not sure.
There seem to be very similar, yet unsolved questions for other T61 users, too:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/How-to-activate-Bluetooth-device/m-p/253...
Is an answer for me an answer to them?
First of all thanks for the multitude of previous answers I could read to sort the matter to a certain degree
and thus to guide me which supportive facts would allow you best to judge.
Here is what I have fond out:
On the Lenovo parts lookup, my model seems to have been shipped with a lot of valuable parts,
incl. an entry relevant to Bluetooth
Mfg part #      FRU part #  Description                                                                            Serviceable?
    41W1156      0000000     CALLISTO (BDC-2) WW SKU:WIRELESS COMBO A    NO
To give me hope, there is an LED symbol for Bluetooth waiting to show light next to the WLAN icon (WLAN icon is on, green, BT isn't).
However, with the hardware radio switch on the front on,
and when pressing Fn+F5, my 802.11 wireless radio does show,
while a Bluetooth entry would not show.
Reducing my hopes further, there is no entry for Bluetooth in the Control Panel.
Reducing my hopes even further, there is no entry for Bluetooth, Callisto or anything else
in the Device Manager > Network adaptors except:
    Intel 82566MM Gigabit
    Intel/PRO Wireless 3945A
    and hidden WAN miniports
Reducing my hopes to a minimum, when trying to install a Bluetooth driver enabler/update 7vbv05ww.exe from Lenovo's support page, it states "no bluetooth device was detected".
Anyone left who can give me back some hope with a clear advice?
Or do I have to accept that I ought to buy a USB Bluetooth dongle somewhere?
    many regards
    Mika at work

    Mike,
If you purchased a Bluetooth adapter (and it appears you did), there is no reason you should have to purchase a USB adapter.
    I would suggest the following:
    1)  Make sure you have the current BIOS installed.
    2)  Make sure the Bluetooth adapter is not disabled in BIOS....if so, it will be invisible to the OS.
    3)  Make sure to follow the ReadMe instructions for the Bluetooth software to the letter.
    4)  Make sure to have the latest HotKey Utility installed.
    T61 Driver page - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67853
    5)  If you do the above and still do not have any luck, call the Help Desk for Warranty Support.  You can have the system serviced under your warranty term as you could possibly have a bad BT card.
    Hope this helps!

  • Powermac 7300/166 processor upgrade

Thanks to help elsewhere on this forum my 7300/166, with all its limitations of speed and 128mb memory, is back in business, and I'd like to upgrade the processor if it could be done without spending too much money. Advice, as specific as possible and suitable for a novice, would be appreciated about what to look for, bearing in mind that I'd most likely be searching on e-bay.

You'd be looking for a G3 or G4 processor upgrade card for the "PCI Mac" (7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500, and 9600) series. Sonnet, PowerLogix, and NewerTech are some of the manufacturers' names that you'll come across. The processor card plugs into the slot, just as the 7300/166 card does. Some of the cards are physically shorter and have a metal strip mounted along the top edge of the card, so that the card stabilizer on the underside of the hinged plastic panel contacts the card. I'd look for a Sonnet card, but that's just my preference. You can also buy what's called a ZIF carrier card, which resembles a processor card, but has a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket for installation of a G3 or G4 "ZIF type" processor. ZIF processors are the same type used in the beige G3 series, B&W G3 series, and G4 PCI Graphics model. The carrier card provides the flexibility to install (and later change/upgrade) a ZIF processor/speed of your preference.
The one limiting factor when using a G3/G4 processor in an older PCI Mac is the 50 MHz (max) system bus speed. Some users have overclocked this a little, but stability issues can result if you push it too much. You'll definitely notice a speed/performance difference with a G3 or G4 processor, compared to a 604e/166 MHz processor. As I've written before, a G3/G4-upgraded Power Mac will never be the equal of a G3 or G4 Mac with the same processor. Even though the original purchasers paid a lot of $$ for these upgrade cards 3-5 years ago, they have depreciated quickly and often go for very little at eBay.

  • Sonnet G4 1G processor upgrade

Hello, new to forum and I have a question.
I have been running this processor upgrade in my B&W for almost a year now and I know Sonnet had decrease the bus speed back to 66 to get it to work. Has anybody figured out how to get the bus speed back with this upgrade?

  • Processor upgrades for PowerMacG4

I have recently get a PowerMac G4 dual processor tower because it was the only way to operate my adc apple cinema HD display correctly. The machine is about 6 years old now and works perfectly. In order to achieve good performance in the future (i'm thinkin to switch to Leopard) I'm considering upgrading my processors, video card and slave disk space.
Does someone can tell me truth about does dual processors upgrades offered by Newertech (2x7448 PPc particulary), Gigadesgin and Sonnet? Does it worth the price (up to 700$ in some case if you want top clocked models) configuring that I want enough power to expect to: -record multitrack audio with Logic or Pro TOOL; - to use efficiently guitar rig 3 - play some new games and finally keep in my studio this quite cool looking silver tower in the standards some years more. Does it exists any risk to install those upgrades?

  • Processor Upgrade Feasibility

My nephew has a G4 "sawtooth" 500MHz computer that I am thinking about upgrading with a new processor so he can play the newest games and run Leopard.
Q - which is the best brand? Any experience with any of them? I was looking at Newer Technology MaxPower 2.0GHz.
Q - How is actual compatibility rated by an actual user of an upgraded CPU?
    Thanks. Barbara

    Hi-
I use a Powerlogix 2.0ghz processor. I have no compatibility issues with any software, or connected hardware. My machines performance increased dramatically, and xBench scores went from system totals of 14-19 to 63-67. Processor scores went from the teens to 100+.
The Newertech 2.0 is a later 7448 processor, (mine is 7447) and will use slightly less power, and run slightly cooler. The Newertech also has a 1mb L2 cache, which is twice the size of the 7447 processors cache. This will really help with graphics, games, etc.
The Newertech, Powerlogix, OWC, Fastmac and GigaDesigns upgrades are all very similar (by processor class ie. 7455, 7447, 7448) and any should serve you well. The Newertech are the only ones using the 7448 processor, which makes the Newertech the latest technology, and probably the fastest.
The CPU, alone, though, will not allow the latest games to be played on the Sawtooth. You will also need a graphics card upgrade. The best (and only) is the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100435068/
The combination will allow good playability of games like Halo, Doom III, UnrealTournament '04, Stubbs the Zombie, to mention a few.
The Newertech, as well as other processor upgrade brands, are also compatible with Leopard. This is great news for processor upgraded G4's, and further validates the "value" of an upgraded machine. G4's have life way beyond that of any other computer line.

  • FastMac processor upgrade

I have ordered a Fastmac 1.5 GHz processor upgrade for my PowerMac G4/400 AGP Graphics.
The onboard USB ports are 1.1.
Will this G4 model accept an 2.0 USB card?

    Thank you for your answer.
I found two Belkin USB 2.0 cards.
    One is Belkin F5U219-LP Hi-Speed USB 2.0 (480Mbps) 3-Port Low Profile 32-bit PCI Card - WIN/MAC
The other is Belkin USB 2.0 Hi-Speed 3-Port PCI Card.
The first one requires a low-profile PCI slot. What is this? Does my G4 has low-profile PCI slots?
I want to order one of them, but I'm afraid to order the wrong one.
    Can you help me?
