T61 and SATA Ultrabay adapter

Over the course of several months and with different versions of Windows, I've tried to get my T61 (8891) to work properly with the SATA Ultrabay adapter.
With some SATA drives, it seems to _almost_ work - it will be recognized properly and even read the file system, but there is still enough of a glitch that files get corrupted.
On my most recent attempt and with most previous attempts, the Ultrabay and main HDD LEDs just light up solid and the drive in the Ultrabay is never recognized at all.  My most recent try was with a Seagate ST9500420ASG.  I did try limiting the speed to 1.5 using a jumper on the drive, but that didn't make any difference.
I am able to use PATA drives in the PATA Ultrabay adapter just fine - no problems at all.
This is a pretty big limitation, though, because all the new faster and higher capacity drives are SATA in addition to all SSDs being SATA.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?  Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael

Kevin,
Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately I've tried several times with drives formatted or cloned first in USB enclosures, but none of them have worked properly.
Some drives do seem to work better than others.  I have had marginal success with a couple of drives in that it will read the file system and the Ultrabay drive access light doesn't stay on constantly.  However, there still seems to be an issue with even these drives.
For most drives I've tried, the drive is not recognized at all and / or the Ultrabay HDD access LED lights up constantly, which can't be good.
It appears that Lenovo has sold promoted and sold hardware that is not actually compatible, at least with some T61s.  It is listed as compatible with my T61 (8891-CTO), but has never worked properly.  I even ordered and tried another Ultrabay SATA adapter thinking something might be wrong with that particular adapter, but neither one works properly.
Thanks,
Michael

  • IDE/PATA HDD UltraBay adapter for T61?

What is the part number for the UltraBay adapter that fits the T61 and accepts IDE/PATA hard disks?

the Z60 uses SATA hdd, so anything in 2.5 inch and 9.5 mm thickness format is okay, currently 640 gig is the largest.
Lenovo's figure are based on the largest hdd that was available when they released the machine, they don't update these value when new parts come out.

  • EBay Ultrabay adapter reporting SATA I with OEM Seagate 500gig HDD installed

I purchased -THIS- recently and when I installed it along with the OEM 500GB Seagate HDD (which is SATA II), RST is only reporting it as operating at SATA I (1.5 Gb/sec).  I then removed the HDD from the adapter and put it back into the main spot and RST then correctly reported it as a SATA II drive.
Have any of you come across this when using similar eBay Ultrabay adapters?  I am thinking about trying another one on eBay, but don't know if I want to take the chance or not.  Has anybody purchased a Ultrabay adapter off of eBay and having it report the correct SATA interface for an OEM SATA II HDD?
    BTW, I have a W520
    thanks!

I'd like to confirm JRHawk9's comments. The HDD in the internal bay reports SATA-300/Sata 2, but in the UltraBay reports SATA-150/Sata 1. This is wrong. Bottom line, if I put a SATA 2 device into a SATA 3 connector, it should be reported as a SATA 2 device.
I have also conducted some performance benchmarks against the HDD in both locations. For large file transfers, the speeds are the same. However, for small file I/O (clearly the norm for most computers), the HDD on a SATA 2 connector (the internal HDD bay in this case), was between 5 - 30% faster.
While neither bay saturated the SATA 1 spec, clearly the HDD properly detected as a SATA 2 device allowed it to perform more small file I/O.
What's wrong here? Why doesn't the Lenovo W520 properly detect the OEM Seagate 500GB drive as SATA 2?  BTW, I've contacted Seagate; they tell me it's Lenovo's fault. With the evidence provided here, I have to agree.

  • T61 - Did using the SATA ultrabay corrupt my XP install?

Detailed explanation follows, but the executive summary version:
Can't boot  from the HDD in the machine if the CD bay is inserted.  With the SATA ultrabay installed instead, I can only get a normal boot from the SATA bay HDD, not the normal drive. Are there are any known issues using 2 bootable XP HDDs in the machine and in the ultrabay at the same time?
I bought a new Hitachi HDD, installed it in the TP61 and have spent lots of time tweaking, configuring, removing and installing apps.  Was almost ready to do a backup (of course!) and remembered some downloaded file data I wanted on my previous Seagate drive.  I swapped out the CD ultrabay and booted from the old Seagate in the SATA ultrabay, copied the data to the new Hitachi and rebooted which I had done before in this process...BUT, this time I forgot to reinsert the CD ultrabay before rebooting so the TP61 booted  from the Hitachi with the Seagate present in the Ultrabay. It booted with a partial desktop but appeared to hang on installing drivers for the new "found" hardware which I think was the ultrabay.
I finally got the machine shut down, replaced the CD bay, but the Hitachi would not boot just getting the blue boot screen, play the Win login sound, then play the win shutdown sound and just loops through  playing this login/logoff sounds process (I had autologin set via tweakXP) until I power it off. Found web references to login/logoff boot loops but no solution worked. A retail XP CD booting from the ultrabay with repair option can not find a hard drive. It won't boot into safemode. If I reinstall the SATA HDD bay again and select it to boot from, it boots fine from it and can see the Hitachi drive.  Rebooting with the Hitachi again selected as the boot device will now boot if the Seagate is present, but it seems to get a "mix" of the XP installed on the Seagate and the XP installed on the Hitachi
Each machine is partitioned with a primary for the OS, and extensions for the apps and the data  i.e. C, D, & E along with the hidden recovery partition.  When I boot with the Hitachi I see the desktop as configured for the Hitachi, but the C boot drive is really from the Seagate.   Using diskmgmt, I see Seagate is disk0 with C, G and H drives while the  Hitachi is disk1 as the D, E, and F drives.
Whew, did that makes sense?  Short of reinstalling from scratch again, is there a way to get the installed Hitachi HDD back as the C, D, and E drives?  Is it completely toast or is their some boot/configuration setting that could be tweaked to make things good again?  Perhaps a registry entry that got hosed?  I'm out of ideas.   Thanks much

Just to let you know that the install went well. Decided to use Windows 7 RC1 trial, and am very impressed.
Thanks for all your help folks.

  • Is there really a gap if I purchase and swap the CD-ROM with Ultrabay Adapter III (43N3412)?

    Hi all,
I want to install a SSD with ultrabay adapter on my w510. But I saw on the forum some people mentioned that there will be a gap if I do so, can anyone tell me if it is true?
    Thanks,

Yes, it's true, if you buy the adapter from Lenovo as I did for my W520. There are vendors on eBay who claim to have gapless (12.7mm) ultrabay adapters. Some are very cheap. One claims to be selling an actual Lenovo part (but if so, why isn't Lenovo?). I put some pictures up here.

  • T61 and two SSD disks

    Hi all,
I'm new here so let me thank you all because I've found many answers regarding T61 on these pages. Your knowledge was of great help to me.
I've been using T61 for almost 3 years now and it's really a great piece of hardware!
I have an OCZ 60GB in as a primary disk and it really boosted performance of T61, not to mention battery life.
For 6 months now I have my old HDD in ultrabay (cheap ultrabay caddy from eBay) and everything was working just fine.
Few days ago I got myself a new OCZ 256GB SSD.
I've put it in ultrabay, initialized it and when I tried to format it, it locked up.
So, I've formatted it in my PC, tested it (wrote files, read files, played files from it), and then put it back in ultrabay.
It's than recognized as a disk, I can open folder that I have copied from my PC, but when I try to read or write a bigger file it locks up again.
So, I've put my primary OCZ in ultrabay and tried to boot from it and after few seconds of initializing windows it locks up.
I don't know if my cheap ultrabay caddy is something with a really bad chip inside and it's a culprit or is T61 ultrabay controller too slow so it just can't handle the load of SSD?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Best regards,
    Walter

    Hi,
I was wondering, what exactly is the speed of T61 ultrabay PATA controller?
On the other hand, my T61 has two free mini PCIe slots (one just right to WLAN card and another bellow CPU)
Would a mini PCIe  to SATA converter/adapter be enough? Like this one:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-PCI-e-PCI-Express-to-SATA-SSD-HDD-USB-Adapter-DIY-/270564958436?pt=LH_D...
or do I need a mini PCIe to SATA controller? Like this one:
    http://eu.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/SATA-Cards/2-Port-Mini-PCI-Express-Internal-SA...
Of course, there would be some DIY involved but that's o.k.
    Thank you!
    Best regards,
    Walter

  • Upgrade questions on T61 and what version of Windows 7?

I have bought a T61 and expect to receive this week.  It has 2gb ram installed and a 100gb HD.  I believe Lenovo supported up to 4gb?  Has anyone put in 8gb?  Also can this model run 64bit Windows 7?  Finally thinking up the road putting in larger hard drive.  As long as I pick a 9.5mm size, any restrictions as to what types of drives it will accept?

I second the recommendation for SSD. These days 128GB and 256GB units are quite reasonable. You don't need the fastest models on the market either because the T61 only runs at SATA-I (or SATA-II with so-called "Middleton" BIOS.)
If you need more disk capacity than that, consider getting an Ultrabay adapter to replace the DVD drive and put a large HDD in that. You can buy these adapters inexpensively on eBay and Amazon. Make sure the one you get is compatible with T61 series.
You can also get an external enclosure to hold the DVD drive from the T61. This then connects via USB. Or just buy an external, USB-connected DVD drive. They're quite cheap these days.

  • Z60m Ultrabay Adapter for HDD

    Hello all,
i'm looking for an Ultrabay adapter for HDD to extend my Z60m-system.
At the lenovo-website, I found an adapter that sould, according to the description, fit into my system.
    Ultrabay Adapter
Has anyone experience with this model?
My second question is:  What is the maximum HDD-size (GB) that can I use there?
In the specifications of the Z60-models, I found the information, that the system is limited to a maximum HDD-capacity of 100GB, or did I misunderstand that?
    Hard drive features:
    Standard 40GB, 60GB, 80GB, or 100GB hard drive sizes
    Specifications Z60
Do I have to consider this restriction at the "primary HDD-Slot" AND the Ultrabay-HDD-Slot ?
    Thank you.

  • T43 - ultrabay adapter not detecting drive

I just bought  an after market Ultrabay Adapter off ebay for the SATA drive I recently bought. However, when I plugged in the adapter into the cd-rom slot Windows does not detect as a drive. It shows up as new hardware detected, but that's it. What can i do to make the drive detectable in MyComputer ( or how do I access it) ?

Does it show up in disk management?  Perhaps it needs to be formatted, or is the drive already formatted?

  • T530 ultrabay adapter does't work

Hello, Who can explain me why not work an Ultrabay SATA hard drive adapter in a T530. Isn't from Lenovo but it works perfectly in any notebook and only the T530 does't work. It's like the device does not exist for T530. Is there any special configuration of the adapter ? A "device present" pinout conf ? Thanks

The T530 should use the same UB Adapter (III) as the others in the T500 series.  It is distinguished by a  plastic stub protruding from the rear of the adapter.  This stub is what engages the push mechanism that ejects the adapter.
There was a recent new version of the adapter for the T500 series which is slightly thicker at the opening, and eliminates the air gap.
The Lenovo Ultrabay Adapter is unique to Lenovo, and is mated to the twp finger slide and push mechanism.  I can't imagine it working in other brand laptops.

  • T41+ ATA or SATA Ultrabay Slim?

    Hi
After reading information in the forum, I´ve don´t really know if there is any advantage with a 2º sata o ata hard drive (except in costs terms) in my t41?Do you know if there is a velocity  increase with a sata 2º drive with regards to an ata hd?
Another question is if there is any limit at the capacity of hard drives to be recognised, both sata or ata drive
    Thanks in advantage
    regards

SATA drives are cheaper and faster in most cases. If the T41 Ultrabay adapter supports SATA, go for that.

Good luck and you are welcome.
Like I said, I bought one of their inexpensive enclosures and now can use the hard drive just as a source for the files that are on it...my external drives are much larger and faster so I just plug that drive in when I need something from it.

  • SATA Host adapter issue

Hey guys,      I Believe that I have found an issue with the SATA host adapter in a Pavilion p6210y desktop.  I have having trouble restoring the system after a hard drive replacement and I discovered that if I have BOTH the hard drive and the CD-ROM drive unplugged then the machine will boot.  If I plug in either the hard drive OR the CD-ROM then the machine will hang on the HP BIOS screen.  Voltage output of the PSU is normal.  I'm thinking the host adapter (motherboard) is toast.

If you already haven't tried, reset the BIOS to 'Default Values'.Or if that doesn't work, try clearing the BIOS entirely by using the Clear CMOS jumpers on the motherboard or removing all power and the CMOS battery for several minutes. Also, you don't need a CD/DVD drive to run a system diagnostics. If you don't have the most recent version of HP Vision Diagnostics, download the most recent version onto a CD or flash drive using the steps in the Creating HP Vision Diagnostic Media section.* HP Vision Diagnostics is supported by systems manufactured between Sept 2010 > June 2012. You can also try BIOS diagnostics. If the computer does not boot, and you do not have a Vision Diagnostics CD available, use the BIOS diagnostic tests. The HP Vision Diagnostics tests are built into the BIOS of your computer and are a quick and easy way to identify basic computer hardware problems.  HP 3 in 1 Diagnostics USB KeyThe HP PC Hardware Diagnostics 3-in-1 USB Key includes the latest UEFI based diagnostics as well as the older HP Vision Diagnostics. In addition to diagnostics, it now supports the recovery of a corrupted BIOS on supported systems.
