T61 hinge replacement

I need to get the hinge replaced on my Thinkpad T61 and the service part list on the lenovo support website has FRU as 42W2451 (Kato) or 42W2673 (Reell) as the part numbers for the hinge.
I could not find these available on any online stores but found  42W2452 or 42W2674 on eBay, so was wondering if I can use these instead?
Do you guys know if there is a big difference between the two types of hinges i.e. 42W2451/42W2673 and 42W2452/42W2674?
Thanks in advance.

hey sudin,
I would suggest reading the Hardware Maintenance Manual to check if those parts are compatible with your unit :

  • Is T61 hinge broken under warranty?

    Hi all,
Recently I found that my T61 right LCD hinge was broken. The machine is still under warranty. I sent to the service centre and a few days later the person told me the hinge is not under warranty and I have to pay about 100 bucks USD to replace the part! I read through the warranty many times and 100% sure I didn't void it.
My question: Is the hinge under warranty?
    Thanks.
    zhichien

The hinge is under warranty as far as material defects are concerned. But the most common case of hinge breakage is that the ThinkPad has been dropped. I don't know the situation in Singapore but here in Germany the manufacturer must verify that the problem is not his fault within the first year of warranty (and not the consumer). So my hinge got replaced on warranty.
If you have evidence that the hinge broke without you handling your TP negligentyou probably have good chances to have the hinge replaced for free as well.
The price of 100$ might sound high at first but if you take into account  that the complete display has to be disassembled and the structure frame needs to be replaced thats an okay price. However my TP came back from repair with the hinge even more broken then before.

  • T61 Hinge failure

The right hinge on my 2 year old T61 split in 2 pieces. The metal just failed/cracked. I didn't drop it
or  force it. In fact I was slowly closing the lid  when I noticed it was moving oddly in the wrong direction.
This should not be a warranty issue. It is a failure of  the metal/ this laptop should have been recalled.
The lack of quality in th actual metal they are using in China seems to be the problem. My old t41 from IBM
has the same hinge only it still works from 6 years ago.
I Google this problem with hinge issues on this T61 and it is a well documented recurring failure with these
notebooks. I called Lenova, they were not helpful.  All I wanted was to talk to a Person who could point out
the part#s needed to repair this.

    lenovasuks, welcome to the forum,
sorry to hear about yout hinge, that's not good news
After having looked up the part number for the correct hinges for your system, posted by zoltanthegypsy, you will be able to order the part from the Maintainance Parts site should you not wish to use e-bay or other possible sources.
For your general information; I've been retailing ThinkPads for over 10 years in Germany, I've seen one case of a broken hinge on a T6 model, three on T4 models. I can count on two hands the number of mainboards I've seen swapped out on T6 models, I'd need two football teams at least to count the number of T4 mainboards swaps.

  • ThinkPad Edge S430: where to get keyboard key hinge replacement?

    Hi guys,
I just broke a hinge of my S430's keyboard's key. A "regular" one. Does anybody knows where I can get a replacement? In Argentina?  (is where I'm currently) Or some place it ships to Argentina, Spain, Germany, Canada...? I didn't find any key or key hinge for these new keyboards on ebay.
I believe it's the same one as the T430u, right?
    Thanks!

  • Hinge replacement on Satelite Pro 4600

I need to replace a broken hinge on the above laptop.
Does anyone here know where I can get one?
I have tried searching google etc but no one seem to have them in stock . Any help would be welcomed.

    Hello
In my opinion it will be problematic to find original parts for this old notebook model.
Check eBay. From time to time you can find parts or cheap defective notebooks.
eBay is very good source for replacement parts, especially for old notebook models.

  • MSI GX640 hinge replacement

    Hello,
I would like to know if anyone has experience in replacing screen (LCD) hinge for a MSI GX640 laptop. My screen has started to crack in (right hinge clutch), and I worry that it will impact the entire display. Can it be replaced, and is there some estimate on cost?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Contact with the local service center and ask for the details information from them, and you'll also need to confirm with them whether they have the material for the repair or not.

  • TS2948 Does anyone have recent experience of getting a macbook air hinge replacement foc

Does anyone have recent (2013) experience of getting a macbook air hinge repaired FOC ?

I just tried to get my original MBA hinge repaired, but the Genius guy in Amsterdam said they stopped the replacement 1 1/2 years ago :-(
Would have been appreciated if Apple could update the original note to indicate the extended warranty on the hinge is no longer in effect.

  • HPDV5T-1200CTO notebook, just replaced hinges, now it won't power on

I will go ahead and shoot my question and maybe one of you guys can give me a hand. I have an HP DV5T-1200CTO notebook. The hinges snapped along with the plastic piece that covers the inverter, that snaps in. All the snaps broke off of the screw that hold it in. So after getting a new hinge and makeing a new plastic piece (to order one they wanted $120.00 for a new one, ya right like I was paying that for a small piece of plastic) I very carefully removed the battery, held down the power button for almost a minture to drain all the power from the system, took out the hard drive, ram, and CMOS battery.
I've repaired hundreds of laptops and when working deep into any laptop always take out the cmos and drain the power to prevent any shock to stuff. So after taking out all the screws, popped the plastic pieces edges, gentrly unplugged all the connectors as usual (it had those weird no clamp, you just pull or push ribbon connectors for the power button and 1 other connector had that weird just push or pull zip connector, the rest weire normal flip the latch ribbons connectors. Anyways, after I got the LCD apart, I swapped out the old hinge for the new one and gently put everything back in its place along with my new plastic inverter cover piece. When I was completely done and put the cmos in and everything else was together, I plugged in the HPDV5T-1200CTO and the charger port / plug lit right up. But when I push the power button nothing happens! NOthing! So i took out the battery and tried it a bunch of different ways but nothing happens. The battery light comes on and stays blue for about 30 seconds to a minute and then goes outl.
What in the world could have happened? It's like pressing the power button doens't power it on. The power input ring lights up and stays lit no problem and the charger light comes on and stays on for 30 seconds or a minute then goes off. I know I didn't miss or break anything. Every screw and connection went right back into the same spot it was before the hinge replacement and all I took out were the screws to get to the hinges and carefully using nylon covered tweezers undid the zif connectors to remove the power button board and keyboard. I'm baffled because it powered up and worked fine even with the screen floppping because the hinges were snapped. If anyone has any idea of what it could be, please let me know. This is a really nice notebook with very low hours. I even have a 240GB solid state hard drive for it, so I don't want to junk the notebook. It's from 2010 but I've replaced way harder things on tons of other laptops and they fire up after the repairs. Thsi is the first time I've dealt with those stupid "No clip" ZiF connections on any laptop though. Could the power button be bad? The way it acts, is as if the pwer button is broke. Hopefully someone has some ideas.
    Thanks!

Remove the main battery. Leave the AC adapter connected with the machine shut down for five or six hours to recharge the internal backup battery. Then try starting it up on AC power.
If that works, leave the AC connected until you have a new main battery in place and charged up. The backup battery will drain completely in a very short time if you disconnect the AC without a good main battery in place, and you'll be back in the same situation again.
If the machine still won't start after 5-6 hours of recharging the backup battery, reset the PRAM, then try again. If that doesn't work, you'll need to replace the backup battery too.

  • T420 Hinges second replacement in 1.5 years?

My T420 Hinges are beginning to wobble again and not adequately support the screen. Basically any minor bump to the computer moves the screen back and forth. This makes it very difficult to use the machine in a car, bus, airplane, or on any surface other than a desk. I've owned the computer for about 1.5yrs and this would be the second time I would have the hinges replaced under warranty. When the machine was new and after the last replacement it did not exhibit these symptoms.
Is this normal for a T420?
Is there anything I can do to make the hinges last longer? I plan on keeping this machine for at least another 2.5 years, and I hate the idea of needing to replace the hinges every six to seven months.
    Thanks!

Hinge replacement in a MacBook Air is not guaranteed. It is left to the technician and service center to determine whether or not the MBA qualifies for replacement. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2948
If you believe that your service center incorrectly evaluated your MacBook Air and hence incorrectly refused service, contact Apple Support and discuss the issue with them. You can find the phone number for Apple Support in Vietnam here:

  • T61 646501U gone through technician HADES

I live here in Florida, as a full time college student. I got this ThinkPad T61 back in Dec of '07 as a replacement. It is still under the 3 year onsite warranty of course. I have babied this thing as I love it and it still looks like brand new. About a week ago, I had called in and had the hinges replaced due to screen wobble. The technician that came out replaced hinges, but left me with a broken screen bezel. The right side of it (while looking at the lcd while using) flapped and was so very loose along with not being completely conjoined together with the cover bezel, leaving a nice sized gap. I called that in to Lenovo tech support, and they sent me out a new lcd cover kit. The same very technician came out, opened it up, a bunch of plastic tabs fell out of it like they were broken, and replaced with new kit. I thought I was done with it and was actually so very happy again, but I again was let down. Went from a 1/2 inch dot showing up on my screen on bottom left hand area and as its getting worse and worse as time goes by, my LCD screen itself is a big blur of white and rainbow colors. As if the technician pressed too hard against the screen itself whilst removong the bezels when replacing the covers. Only the top 2 inches, if that, are viewable, rendering this unit useless and hindering me from my school work. I called Lenovo tech support yet again, and they are sending out a new lcd screen and should be at latest Tuesday the 1st. I know that this technician is from a company named QualXServ, and I was wondering if there are any LENOVO techs in my area that can come here to replace this screen. I am in Melbourne FL. I am thinking that since Qual X Serv handles Lenovo's warranty work here I doubt there are any Lenovo techs. Anyone have any insight or advice? Thanks
I have included a link with a picture of what my screen looks like now QQ

  • Where can I purchase a Thinkpad T61 fan replacement?

Where can I purchase a Thinkpad T61 fan replacement?  I've looked all over the Lenovo site, and I can only find the part number referenced, not a location to purchase it.
When I opened up my Thinkpad, on the fan, it said:
    Lenovo P/N 42W2461
    FRU P/N 42W2460
Has anyone here ever tried other merchants with success (eBay, etc.)?
(I'm out of warranty, and the fan gets noisy when hot, unlike when it was new, and I sometimes get "Fan Error" on bootup at the BIOS.)

  • Quiet HDD for Audio Recording on T61

The original hard drive on my T61 having just died I need to buy a replacement.
One of the best features of this computer for me has been its near silent operation - I use it to record spoken audio and so this is REALLY IMPORTANT.
What would be the quietest HDD I could buy for it ?
Are 7200rpm drives louder ? Do they run hotter and make the fans come on ?
Can Solid State Drives be used in T61s ?

I haven't tried it myself, but an SSD should be fine.  There may be alignment issues, depending on your OS - and as always, there can be compatibility issues with a given manufacturer. Here are a few links that may help.  You can also search "T61 SSD" here on the Lenovo forums.
Does T61 w/ traditional HDD supports new SSD

Crucial® Memory Advisor results for the Lenovo ThinkPad T61 Series Laptop/Notebook.
I'm not recommending or not recommending Crucial - but their T61 compatibility list should be a comfort.
