T61 Lenovo Rescue and Recovery BSOD

Hi,
I've got a problem booting into the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery partition.
System is a T61 (64665DG) with Rescue and Recovery 4.21.1016.00
I receive the following BSOD message:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Technical information:
***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D6528,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)
It seems to be a problem with the AHCI controller not being supported. When I switch the SATA Controller Mode from AHCI to Compatibility in the BIOS it then successfully boots into the Rescue and Recovery environment.
Why is it missing the correct AHCI driver? It used to work fine with the older version of Rescue and Recovery in AHCI mode. Is there a fix available for the Rescue and Recovery software to allow you to run it without having to put the SATA controller in AHCI mode?

Solved!
Go to Solution.

Thanks both for your replies. The inability for it to boot the Rescue and Recovery partition in AHCI mode persuaded me to examine the contents of the partition for anything obvious amiss. Using Linux I was able to mount the FAT partition and have a nose around. In the /minint/system32 directory it's got a number of sub-directories for the Intel Iastor driver - that used to access the HD in AHCI mode. I couldn't find any reference to that in txtsetup.sif and the winpeoem.sif file was empty. After some Googling I found out that you can easily load additional mass storage drivers using winpeoem.sif.
IBM have a program called rrutil.exe that allows you to access the RnR partition from within Windows, it's part of the Rescue and Recovery Administrator Tools.
To modify winpeoem.sif first install the RnR admin tools and open a command prompt window in the install location - C:\SWTOOLS\TOOLS\Z652_Admin016. Make sure the C:\Temp directory exists and is EMPTY - this is very important. You then need to create a "getlist.txt" file:
echo \minint\system32\winpeoem.sif > getlist.txt
retrieve the file from the RnR partition
rrutil.exe -g getlist.txt C:\Temp
 type
notepad C:\Temp\minint\system32\winpeoem.sif
and paste in
[Version]
signature="$Windows NT$"
[OemDriverParams]
OemDriverRoot=""
OemDriverDirs=IASTOR
upload the changes with (this will write everything from Temp to the RnR partition!)
rrutil.exe -p C:\Temp
Or you could just modify /minint/system32/winpeoem.sif directly in Linux without messing about with the rrutil.exe.
With this small modification to winpeoem.sif I was able to successfully boot into the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery partition with AHCI mode enabled. I haven't tried reinstalling windows xp with this fix.

after some google search i've understand that "tvtfilter.sys" was critical file of "Rescue And Recovery" system.
so, any one with "Rescue And Recovery" running on his laptop can upload for me this file?
    it's located in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DIRVERS\" and it's name is "tvtfilter.sys"
    thank you!
BTW, ive tried to re-install it but it wont let me because of some error message

    Hi eitrnel,
Just a thought: give a try to un-intsall the Rescue and Recovery from the Control Panel first before re-installing it.

  • Help with Lenovo Rescue and Recovery 4.31

    Hello,
I work for a company that uses Ghost images for deploying laptops. We have recently decided to try the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery software built in with the new T520s when doing our local backup before sending the laptop out to the user.
What we decided to try is building the base image, creating the backup locally on the computer using R&R, dumping the image to our server using Ghost and then imaging other laptops with that image.
Our reasoning for creating the local backup first, is that time is not that big of an issue when creating the initial image, and neither is imaging other laptops because we create spares that we have built and ready to go out. What we would then do is apply any updates since the laptop was imaged, and have R&R create an incremental backup again, which would only take a few minutes and the laptop would be ready to ship.
Upon using this method, we have found that you cannot view the original first backup created in R&R on a laptop that it was not created with. The backup content is there, as the drive space is used and booting into a DOS prompt and browsing the C:\RRbackups\SZ\<UID>\ folder shows the data.
What I'm looking to know is how the R&R software generates that UID, and if anything can be done to allow the other laptops to recognize, whether it's rename the folder with a UID that the new laptop is going to use, or if it's something within the software files that's changable. Or even the registry.
Any ideas or suggestions would be great.
    Thanks!

    kylejg, welcome to the forum,
R&R is a little system specific. How many systems are you expecting to deploy using the method you describe?
It might be worth taking a look at the "Big Brother" of R&R namely Image Ultra Builder as it should be able to, with ease, realise exactly that which you are aiming for.

  • Lenovo rescue and recovery will not run a new backup

Tried several times to make a new backup using "rescue and recovery" (i've done this regularly over the years) .. But "rescue and recovery" freezes and then shuts the computer down. This has happened at least 4 times so far.
    x201....3249-CTO....i7....4GB RAM....64-bit OS....Windows 7

    1. What are the current and previous versions of R&R? When it was upgraded?
    2. Did you have the such issue with previous R&R version?
    3. Did you try to uninstall previous version and install the new one? Or reinstall the current version? How current vesrsion is upgraded from the previous one - manually or using System Update?
    4. Was your OS version upgraded from previous one? I mean as an example XP -> W7

  • Rescue and Recovery 4 DOES NOT RESCUE/COPY LARGE FILES?!

    Hello all,
Thank you in advanced for helping me out/any helpful advice you may have.
    System:
    Windows XP Professional
    T61
    4 GB RAM
2.50 Ghz Dual Core Intel Processor
    120 GB Hard Drive
140m nVidia Quadro video card (256 MB available memory I believe)
    Problem Summary:
I ran into the unlucky computer problem of having a Microsoft.net framework addon for Firefox 3.5.3 result in a fatal interaction leaving me unable to boot up in both safe and normal mode. If you do have this addon, please uninstall it NOW, so that it does not happen to you. There is no current fix or patch for it as far as I know. Luckily, I have the (formerly) fantastic Rescue and Recovery 4 to backup my files and fix things.
So in sequence of what I did:
Tried several different attempts to fix problem to no avail (via google searches on the Rescue and Recovery Browser)
Decided that it would be best to just reformat the drive and start a clean install.
I had not done a real back up recently (several months due to my own carelessness and being busy).
I chose to do a full factory restore using the 'Rescue My Files' option, since I had never done a backup using the included Lenovo Software, I usually just ran my own manual ones in Windows.
To be on the safe side, I just decided to transfer my entire hard drive directory 'C:' to my 500 GB External Western Digital Hard Drive. I know I didn't really NEED all the files (like program files I would just need to reinstall anyway). I just wanted to return my computer to how it was as fast as possible.
Rescue and Recovery registered as copying all my data (rougly 50-60 GB) of data to my external USB Hard Drive.
I then unplugged my External USB Drive From the computer once it said it was complete. Rescue and Recovery proceeds with the factory restore.
Things are going well, factory restore is successful, no problems yet.
Once Windows was functional again and I had remade my usernames and settings just as it was before the crash, I plugged in my External HD again to restore my files.
Every file that I copied was there EXCEPT FOR MY MOST IMPORTANT ONES. It appears the directory, 'C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\My Documents'
    AND
    'C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\Desktop'
DID NOT COPY. I DID A DOUBLE CHECK, and the program said that all files had transferred successfully and I saw the directories on the USB Hard Drive in the Rescue and Recovery View. (I did not do a double check on another windows computer with my USB Hard Drive, however as I did not have access to one at the time and I was trusting in the Lenovo software, which did actually manage to rescue all the files, except for my most important ones.)
    Is there anyway way that:
That because these files were so large (probably account for 50% of all data copied to my external USB Drive or 10-15 GB a piece), that the Rescue and Recovery file simply "passed over them"? The other files appeared to copy perfectly fine.
There was an error with the program, like a file size limit cap that Rescue and Recovery cannot surpass so they were just skipped over?
My own carelessness? Are all the root files not selected when you choose the entire 'C:' Drive as a directory? I did just choose to copy/rescue the entire 'C:' Drive and everything else (besides my two most important files) seemed to copy over so I do not beleive that this is the case.
I did not individually, select each file in the 'C:\Documents and Settings' because I assumed that it would select each of the root files within it. (Is that not the case?)
That the files are 'hiding' somewhere due to their large size?
    Most importantly of all:
IS THERE ANYWAY THAT I CAN RECOVER MY DATA? There is about 2 years worth of photos, music, documents, etc. that I would like to have back that I do not have a recent back up of.
If anything, does anyone know WHY this happened? It was my understanding that Lenovo Rescue and Recovery was some of the best software for emergency crashes out there. And now it has failed me miserably. I'd at least like to know why it happened so that I may not repeat my mistake (or put too much faith in Lenovo) for the future.
I've run some data recovery software but I know it will not recovery all the files that I once had in their state before my hard drive was reformatted back to factory settings.
    Thank you,
    -nofeet3
    Justin

    Hello , and ARGH !
I AM HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM RIGHT NOW !
If anybody could help this would really be appreciated .
    Here is the story
    Lenovo SL500
    Windows XP SP3 I think
    Specs maybe not too important
My computer has some corrupted file and will not boot in normal or safe mode . When I try to do either , it starts booting , but before it finishes the load-up-windows screen , it displays an error message which says
    " lsass.exe - System Error
the endpoint format is invalid "
and then goes no further , and the machine simply restarts itself again and would do this indefinitely if I didn't stop it .
SO when it starts booting and shows the Lenovo Logo , I press the Lenovo Help/Tool Button to enter Rescue and Recovery [not sure what version it is , I cannot find information within it] and it gives me the option to Rescue files before recovering the system . I have the same problem as Nofeet3.
It rescues all the small files
BUT WILL NOT RESCUE ANY OF MY IMPORTANT FILES
CERTAINLY IT DOES NOT RESCUE ANYTHING BIG [or bigger than roughly 2mb]
It rescues picture files BUT WILL NOT RESCUE MUSIC FILES !!
It may not even rescue bigger picture files , but I haven't noticed any pictures it has not copied since I can't go through ALL my picture files to see exactly what it has / hasn't copied.
However , not a single music file is copied.
It will NOT show up on the hard drive . What is strange , is when I try to plug the hard drive back in to try and copy the music files again , as I tried it a few times , it asks me if I would like to Write these files over the files already there , as though it has already copied. I check the hard disk , and these fils have definitely NOT copied onto the Disk . They are nowhere to be found .
I don't think the files are hiding , but if they are , maybe somebody could tell me where.
I suspect though that Rescue and Recovery has "recorded"  the files as having been copied , some kind of record , EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVEN'T !! Or if they have , they are absolutely invisible . WEIRD !
    nofeet3
It is NOT because you selected the whole C drive , and is not due to any carelessness on your part. I have selected all files individually , and have tried time and time and time again , when I plug the ext hard drive into my other laptop to see if the files copy , they don't . I have tried this over and over and over again desperately all today , it is not working , even going so far as to select individual files rather than bigger directories to try and transfer in smaller in smaller batches ,just in case it couldn't handle large transfers all at once . That is not the case either . It just simply will not transfer files roughly bigger than 2mb . NO MUSIC !! THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING !!
I am not sure at present whether this program can rightly be called "Rescue and Recover". It is one of the main reasons I selected Lenovo  , and this is not a good demonstration of it's abilites at all .
    PLEASE HELP ME !!
ANY HELP WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED !!
Thanks so much in advance for any help anybody can give , and best regards ,
    Carl .

  • Recovering backup data from a previous version of Rescue and Recovery

    Dear All,
can you please advice how can I restore the system&data (Windows 7)
I created recovery CDs and did the full backup (USB drive)
I changed disk (diagnostic reported warnings for the old one)
    I recovered system from CD
I wanted to recover full backup/image from USB drive, however
after reboot R&R 4 starts and error message "... backup taken with previous version..." is displayed.
I wanted to recover single file (R&R 4.31)  from USB drive, however
error message "The list box identifierwas not found"  is displayed
What shall I do? upgrade R&R to 4.51? downgrade R&R to 4 (where are downloads)? something else? what R&R versions exist for W7?
    thanks in advance.

  • Rescue and Recovery failed destination network location can no longer be reached

W510, running Windows 7 Pro SP1,  updated with ThinkVantage including BIOS 1.37 along with Rescue and Recovery 4.31 yesterday. Using Backup locations "Local hard drive" had not problem, but when it was set to "Network", it gave me "The backup failed because the destination network location can no longer be reached.". Prior to running RR, I manually mounted the shared drive on W510 and could read and write files. The user that mounted the shared drive was not "Administrator" but has Administrator privilege. The network shared drive was a folder on an Windows XP SP3 computer. The shared drive had Full Control granted to Everyone as well as for Sharing. I rebooted W510 before starting RR. After the "network location can no longer be reached" error popped up, a long while later, RR actually wrote some files in the shared drive and then finally it aborted. It created on the shared drive RRBackups\SZ\<UUID>\... (among other folders and files); under <UUID> there's a common\rr.log with:

    The events don't make sense:
    a) Why would RR says "network location can no longer be reached" - the wording suggests that it was OK, but now it isn't.
    b) The br_funcs returns Error 0x501 (NOT_IMPLEMENTED or NOT_SUPPORTED), but RR still attempted to call mapdrv.
    c) Apparently mapdrv was successful otherwise it shouldn't try to delete the t0.dat on the shared drive (which didn't exist - hence Error 3 (PATH_NOT_FOUND)) and unless it has reached the remote computer, it wouldn't know the file wasn't there.
I'm curious to find out if anyone has run into this problem and how to fix it.

It errored out after it has already created some folders and files as indicated in the first post.Tried the same steps several times just make sure it was repeatable by closing Rescue and Restore app and starting it again. The network between the share host and my W510 was a direct RJ45 cable connection, so zero hop.  In the end I used Windows 7 Backup and Restore to do full backup, using the same \\server\sharename, the network share was mapped without a problem. But then Windows 7 Restore CD wasn't able to map network share - giving me 0x800704cf. Googling shows lots questions raised on this but no fix.
    Update:
Last night, I gave it a shot again. For some reason, RR was able to mapped the network share using \\IPaddress\sharename (this time I used a different folder and a diferent sharename). OK great, but after 10 hrs it's at 88% completion, did my math, estimated elasped time is 12 hrs, Wow! The image backup with Windows 7 Backup took 5 hr 51 min with 132GB in the WindowsImageBackup folder. RR is 2x slower!
On the other hand, as it's still running, the est. backup folder size is 106GB. RR does a better job in compression - a 20% reduction in size compared with Windows' at the cost of 2x time.
Going back to the Windows 7 Restore CD 0x80704cf error when mapping the network share, found an Internet user posting that he succeede by providing a NIC driver.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.3 for Windows 7, installation

    Hello,
I purchased my system June 16, 2009 with Vista downgraded to XP Pro so I was not able to purchase a upgrade disk from Lenovo.
This week I purchased the Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium upgrade package at a local store.
I did the upgrade (clean install) Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on my ThinkPad T400 type 2764-CTO. Also successfully installed all Win 7 64 bit ThinkVantage software with System Update 4.
I downloaded Rescue and Recovery 4.3 for Windows 7
The documentation for the installation of R&R 4.3 is difficult to comprehend and I could not find a post on this board that deals with my topic.
The recommended procedure before installing Rescue and Recovery on computers running the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows 7 is:
you must download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package (x64) SP1.
That was done with no problems!
To make the Rescue and Recovery program work with Sysprepbackup in the Windows 7 operating system, you must download and install the Sysprepbackup accessory package.
The Sysprepbackup operation changes in the Windows 7 operating system because a new version of Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) is built in the Windows 7 operating system. When you run the System Preparation Tool (Sysprep) and use the /generalize option, the Sysprep operation disables Windows RE by removing the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) entry to the Rescue and Recovery Pre Desktop Area (PDA). To make the Rescue and Recovery program work with Sysprepbackup in the Windows 7 operating system, you must download and install the Sysprepbackup accessory package.
and here starts my problem installing the package!
    Instruction:
To install the accessory package in the Windows 7 operating system and take a Sysprepbackup on a USB hard disk drive, do the following:
Type the following commands to start the Sysprepbackup process using administrative privileges: cd "\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery" rrcmd sysprepbackup location=U name="sysprep backup" The "...run sysprep now..." message displays. Note: Before you take a Sysprep backup on the USB hard disk drive, make sure that there is at least one backup on your local hard disk drive.
Go to the C:\Windows\Systme32\Sysprep directory and launch the sysprep.exe file. The System Preparation Tool window opens.
Be sure to select Quit from the Shutdown Options drop-down list box. Click OK to save the setting. The Sysprep process begins.
When the Sysprep process is completed, run the msi file that you downloaded using administrative privileges. Wait until the package is successfully installed.
Restart your system. Then, it will automatically boot to the PDA to continue with the Sysprepbackup process on the USB hard disk drive. For the detailed parameters about the restore operation commands using RRCMD, refer to the Rescue and Recovery 4.3 Deployment Guide. Software versions to use with this release.
3.At the end Install the Rescue and Recovery 4.3 package.
Ok that should be simple to do.
What is "Sysprepbackup" and do I need to follow the installation procedure above to be able to install and run Rescue and Recovery 4.3 for Windows 7. I dont think I need to or want to do a "Sysprepbackup on a USB hard disk drive". or may be I will when I understand what it is.
Can I simply install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package (x64) SP1 and  the  the Rescue and Recovery 4.3 package.
    Thank you
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I installed Win 7 Pro 64 on my T400, ran TVSU and installed R&R 4.3. Fortunately, I didn't read those instructions first, or I might not have done it
Have you tried just installing R&R? If it needs anything else, it should ask for it during the install. IIRC, it does require the VCC+ package.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.3 on Windows 7 Pro

I've just upgraded my ThinkPad R61 to Win 7 Pro, successfully installed all Win 7 ThinkVantage software and here starts my problem:
When I try to create a backup using RnR 4.3 I get "Gathering system settings and data. Please wait" window, r2r.exe is working for a few minutes and that's it. Nothing more after 11 hours. I thought it may be related to ESET Smart Security, but no.

    I have:
    1.  Instslled a new 160GB, 7200 RPM Lenovo HDD
    2.  Clean installed Win 7 Ultimate (retail) x64
    3.  Clean installed all Lenovo and Microsoft Win 7 x64 updates
    On my:
    Lenovo T61p, T7700 2.4 Ghz, 4 GB Ram
I downloaded Rescue and Recovery..tvtvrnr43_en.exe and saved it to my desktop.
When I go to install the RnR I get the following error message:
"Microsoft  Visual C++2005 Redistributal (x64) SP1 needs to be installed before you can install RnR".
One of Microsoft's important updates was the above MS Visual C++ which I installed.
I phoned Lenovo support in Atlanta and they said they offer no support on a retail version of Win 7.  They
said that I was "missing some kernal" that came with the original OEM software which isn't on a retail clean
install.  I'm baffeled since all other Lenovo Win 7 updates were able to be installed and are working properly.
    I'm stuck.  Any Suggestions please.

  • Ideas to improve the Rescue and Recovery System

    Hi,
some weeks ago I ned to restore my system, while this process there was some difficulties with the Rescue and Recovery. But First my configuration:
I'm using a T61p with Windows Vista Ultimate installed.
On the System there are 5 Partitions
    1. Rescue and Recovery
    2. Windows Bootstrap
    3. BitLocker Encrypted Windows Partition
    4. Linux /boot
    5. Encrypted Linux LVM
So, one morning I tried to start my ThinkPad and nothing worked anymore. After a Short time I found out that the boot sector of the windows bootstrap partition was corrupted. The Linux Partition worked fine and was startable with a GRUB CD-Rom.
Ich checked out the Rescue and Recovery system and was sad that I isn't possible to recover the boot sector of the bootstrap partition. The only way to rescue my system was to reinstall windows at all!
Thats a bad solution, because you can recover the boot sector with every OEM-DVD of Windows Vista, but this DVD is not available for a ThinkPad user.
So I backuped my files and reinstalled the system. While the reinstallation process rescue and recovery gives the option to install windows on C:. But on such a multiboot configuration it is not very clear what drive C: is. After some experiment I think he is taking the first parition after Rescue and Recovery or the first free space after it. At this place it would be much better if I can choose a parition for the installation.
So, if a Lenovo engineer is reading this, please think about to:
    - Include some tools like boot sector recovering in the Rescue and  Recovery system
    - Adding a mode where you can choose the parition to install Windows.
Over and above that I'm really happy with my ThinkPad.
    Thanks for reading.

    Greetings,
This isn't so much a reply to Cobelius, or a solution, but a commiseration of sorts.  Or at least an "I hear ya, buddy, I wish they'd improve some things about Rescue and Recovery, too."
I notice that no one else has replied to this thread.  I hope at least that someone will read these posts, and pass 'em on to the appropriate developers.
    Here's my story:
I am, overall, extremely happy with my brand, spanking new T500.  So far, I'm only running a single OS, Vista Business 64.
However, I did make the following 'tweaks' to my setup, which brings out the flaws in the Rescue and Recovery software:
    1) I used Truecrypt 6.1a to encrypt my system partition (leaving the original rescue partition intact)
(Side Note:  Where my original drive C came with tons of empty space, I used DISKPART to shrink it a bit an created another primary partition as drive D.  Hey, why the heck not?  Originally, I wanted TrueCrypt to encrypt the entire drive, but this failed.  Truecrypt said this was due to a hardware failure, but 20 hours of my life wasted scanning the drive with HDD Regenerator 1.51 revealed no bad sectors.  So now Drive D is encrypted as an ordinary TrueCrypt container and mounted upon login. I'm okay with this solution,  but if anyone wants to research why TrueCrypt couldn't do the whole disk, you have my thanks in advance.)
    2) I bought a Maxtor BlackArmor(tm) hardware-encrypted USB external drive to use for my backups.  I successfully used the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery tool to both create specific file backups as well as to image my entire drive C onto the BlackArmor device, once I mounted it (by running a built-in executable and supplying it with my secret password)
    3) I set a Lenovo BIOS password for unlocking the boot hard drive.
So far, so good.  I type the BIOS drive password, then theTrueCrypt password, and Vista takes over 12 minutes to become usable and, well, that's a Microsoft issue, isn't it?
But, here's the deal: WHAT IF I CAN'T BOOT FROM THE HARD DRIVE ANYMORE?  Well, TrueCrypt made me create a bootable rescue CD which can restore my encrypted boot sector or permanently decrypt my hard drive.  What it can also do is let me press the ESC key to boot without providing a password, which does a supposedly wonderful thing -- since it fails to boot my drive C, it takes me straight into the Lenovo Rescue And Recovery session.
The problem is, the Lenovo boot (version 4) takes me AUTOMATICALLY into a self-repair utility which wastes another 10 minutes of my time to finally tell me --d'uh-- that my boot sector is 'corrupted'  (it isn't; it's merely ENCRYPTED by TrueCrypt.  As it should be).
FLAW NUMBER 1:  Rescue and Recovery should provide a default menu where automatic diagnosis is a CHOICE the user can elect not to make, or abort if it has begun.
FLAW NUMBER 2: You guys should enhance what appears to be a Vista PE environment (or BartPE, or whatever) with a few utilities, including an Explorer-like browser to examine the disk (which would snow nothing in my case, as my drives are encrypted),  and a command prompt, and the ability to launch executables.  The environment should also recognize USB drives.
As it happens,  I used a third-party Vista PE rescue CD, Active@ Partition Recovery, to boot an environment having the utilities I needed.  Using this tool, I was able to recognize a USB key that had TrueCrypt installed in 'traveller' mode (no windows registry keys needed).  Running this app and providing my truecrypt password enabled me to unlock my Drive C, albeit by mounting it as another drive letter.  This made it possible to read and write to my disk.
The encrypted Maxtor drive is visible, too, from this boot environment,  but it appears as a CD-ROM drive, and yields no secrets until you run an executable file on it and enter the drive's password. And that worked, too.  So I could find files to copy over to my hard drive, if I needed to.
However, in order to RESTORE files to my drive, I'd still need to be able to run Rescue and Recovery, or at least the Recovery portion.  Which  brings me to:
FUNDAMENTAL FLAW NUMBER 3:  You need to create a Recovery tool that can run from within an external USB drive, without requiring shared .DLLs in various subfolders or windows registry entries.  Lord knows, I certainly tried to copy  RestoreNow.exe from C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery onto my Maxtor drive, along with whatever DLLs it called for, but it was hopeless.  The damned thing just wouldn't run from the USB drive on the PE environment.
The way I see it, then, is that there really is no way to restore my hard drive should I suffer a catastrophic failure.  Major bummer.
FUNDAMENTAL FLAW NUMBER 4: When I got my laptop, I created a series of recovery disks using the Lenovo supplied software. Booting with the first CD, however, only proved depressing, as I had to agree that the ONLY purpose for this CD was to recover my PC to factory-shipped condition.  Which meant erasing my drive and restoring it with the contents of the other DVDs.  But I want to restore what I backed up with Rescue and Recovery!  My life SINCE the laptop shipped from the factory!   Geez, Louise, why not let me choose to do THAT, too?
(Of course, the boot CD would need to allow me to execute the Maxtor program that unlocks my encrypted USB drive, and also let me execute TrueCrypt to unlock my hard drive.)
I sure hope someone forwards this to a developer who'll take it seriously, after s/he stops chuckling.  You guys should just ship a usable Vista PE rescue CD with every laptop, I think.  And a recovery-only tool that doesn't need DLLs or Registry Entries to run. It would help in so many ways.
In the meantime, I guess I'd better do all I can to ensure my laptop's hard drive doesn't die on me.
Again, other than for this teeny problem that "don't amount to a hill o' beans in this crazy world," I'm really happy with my T500.
Thanks for reading this, too.  And happy holidays.

  • Error runtime. rescue and recovery. wizrr.exe

hi all hope you can help me. I'm trying to restore a system with Rescue and Recovery but to get 5% gives me an error "Runtime error c: \ Program Files (x86) \ Lenovo \ Rescue and Recovery \ wizrr.exe"
Tell me know how to fix it. Thank you.

    To recap:
    (1) the machine seems to be fellow student on your team with a W520
    (2) said  machine will boot to windows OK (ie, the restore failure did not mess C drive up, it boots)
    (3) user add new printer /drivers to machine, which dont work and wants to go  back to earlier backup of system
    (4) RNR version is 4.5.2 and backups are to USB
    ==
    Technical:
RNR standalone does the restore. This software is found:
    A. windows RNR.  order the restore.  It will switch to standalone  RNR partition (on his W520). The order is placed on windows RNR, after selecting restore point.  <<< this will be automatic, after order placed.  It will reboot to the PDA, progress 5% screen.
    B. Fellow user booted to the standalone RNR at boot time (PF11, thinkvantage blue button) AND had to go thru panels to order up the restore.
    C. User had the USB plugged in.  The BIOS boot sequence has USB first, and it booted standalone  RNR software from the USB,then user had to go thru select panels.
D.Standalone RNR CD boot.  This would require RNR, windows, create RESCUE media, and CD first in the boot sequence.
    ==
Regardless of  a, b, c,d.  Have user use ? of standlaone program to see the verison of the standalone software. The standalone version will be slightly different then the windows platform version (like .0 vs .1 in version number).
    ==
I suspect user booted from the USB which had an old standalone RNR version.   version mismatch.
    1) Remove USB in BIOS from the start up boot sequence
2)Order restore via windows platform, it will switch to PDA on HDD -or- boot to pda(pf11) and order restore via panels.
3)I also suspect when user upgraded to 4.5.2, the USB was NOT connected, thus the RNR standalone boot software on USB is older release.  BUT the backups are 4.5.2 This not a issue NOW.   Later....... Just RNR , create rescue media, point to the USB. Make sure the DO NOT DESTROY flag is set (default). This will upgrade the USB standlone RNR to 4.5. 2.

Post back if this matches the scenario.

  • Rescue and Recovery Password not Accepted

There is a previous message with the same title but, it is marked solved.  The solution does not work for my machine.
    My ThinkPad T2300 (0768 -2UU) has crashed.
When I press F11, the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery 3 screen appears.
    - I assume it is Version 3.
The Rescue and Recovery Workspace Logon window then appears.  It has  the following fields.
    - User Name: AutoFilled with my main ID (Jim).
    - Windows Password: blank
    - DOMAIN: Autofilled with Lenovo-xxxxxxxx
    - Check box: "I forgot my Windows Password"  It is grayed out!
When I put in my Windows Password, I get the following message.  "Authentication failed.  Please try again."
If I change to another id: Administrator, John etc. I get the following message. "The user has not been enrolled with the Client Security Solution.  Only enrolled users may log on or recover their password/passphrase."
When I boot the machine, the best I can do is to get into DOS.   I have no passwords set in Bios.  I have tried to remove the password with the following command  (C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove) .   I have scanned my machine and cannot find "app.exe".
How can I fix this problem?

    Hi,
based on the informations, that you provided, this looks, like if the RnR partition was configured as secure for your CSS application.
So here are the steps, on how to get rid of the password request:
    - start into OS
    - open CSS
    - go to Advanced-> Manager security policies
    - in this new window you will see on the left side the option "Log on to Rescue and Recovery". Please select it and on the right site you can choose the correct option, that you want to user. Or just dissable it.
Your situation is, that you, or someone have protected the RnR partition with the CSS security policy. The command, that you noticed, that is not for this purpose, because there are multiple ways on how to set a password into RnR partition:
    1) useind RnR => this is the option, where the command "pe_masterpw_app.exe -remove" would help
    2) using BIOS => this was only by older systems
    3) using CSS => this is the situaiton, that you see. The main hint is the domain field, which can be only comming from CSS
Let me know, if this helps.
    Cheers

  • How to manage Rescue and Recovery Backups

Hi I've been using disk image backup solutions since the days of powerquests Drive Image. And have had my days with Ghost and Acronis Trueimage. I recently built a clean Vista image on my T400, and I'd like to take advantage of the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery 4.21 tool since it the recovery technology is already part of my system and I have tested it once.
I'm used to the idea that a backup tool will produce an image file, which I can manage myself, moving to various media....hiding under my bed etc. With RnR, I've noticed it prefers to control the directory's where backups are placed (this is a bit annoying to me, but I can live with it, as long as it's isolated to the RRBackup directory - which it appears may not be the case). I do appreciate it's ability to specify various backup media locations (network, CD, 2nd HDD, USB) and recognize that it's a simple approach for basic usage.
Recently I've backed up my image to USB drive, and also to the local disk. I'd like to take that back up and split it up into DVD's and burn it to disk. I know there is a built in RnR feature which lets us copy backups from the local drive (why only local drive ??) to USB/Network/CD, but unfortunately the CD copy feature burns directly to my thinkpad burner...which is a CDR device, not a DVDR device. I'd like to use the DVDR device on my desktop...
Anyway, I'd like to know if there is more resources on how to manage RnR Backups. I found the following guide http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70344.html (which is hard to get on Lenovo's site...google finds it better), I'm still reading it, but so far it appears more focused on the pre-desktop area than backup management.
    Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Danielle,
Consider this allegory; factory settings will make your thinkpad like a never driven 0 meter car [with reference to software]. Hence it will be far-flung from it's previous state. Apart from what you have already saved on memory stick, all settings and the software you have installed on the notebook will be lost.
    I hope this helps.

  • Rescue and Recovery will not open

I wanted to back up my system to an external hard drive after finding out that it hasn't been backed up in over 200 days even though when prompted periodically , I select the option to "back up now." However, it seems that neved did back up. When I tried to run Rescue and Recovery (4.21) from Start -  All Programs - ThinkVantage - Rescue and Recovery, nothing happenend. I restarted my computer and this message came up when it rebooted :
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    "Runtime Error!
    C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Rescue and Recovery\rrpservice.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I do not recall 100% but I think I got a very similar error message, only worst situation.  I had to replace HDD because the original HDD crashed.  I installed a new HDD and when I went to re-store with the ORGINAL IBM LENOVO RnR + Product CD's, 7 in all, I got something like you got.  I called Lenovo and someone in the service department told me that because my T60 was out of warrantly I needed to buy a new set of CD's !   Interesting hey,  I told him that the Original CD's that came with the T60 had corrupted files and this from day 1.  Anyway, long story short NO WIN XP as of yet.  Good thing there is UBUNTU Linux.  Good luck with issue.
