T61 Persistent Graphics Driver Failure

Last November my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 died. I was able to wipe it and reinstall Windows, but it would only work with an external monitor. So it's working fine with an external monitor and I update Windows fully and then it stops working with the external monitor even. I can get into Safe Mode, so I go back and then install one thing at a time from Windows Update. The update that caused the external monitor to stop working was "nVidia - Display - NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M", the display driver.
Now here's where it gets weird. When I install this driver, about 1 time in like 15-20 it works after rebooting and my laptop monitor works normally like it's supposed to. However, while it's working, the monitor will sometimes randomly freeze up and I'll get a display driver error message and then the display refreshes itself. This will only last a couple days before it fails completely and totally and I have to go back to Safe Mode and uninstall that driver so that I'm back on external only again. Usually I just tell Windows Update to ignore that update and run it on external, but I really need my laptop to be a real laptop again, so sometimes I let it run and pray for the best.
What do I need to do to fix this? Looking around, it seems like the problems with this graphics card are common enough that the thing should have been recalled, but since Lenovo doesn't seem very likely to do that at this point, what are my options? Can I replace it myself or is it going to cost me more than the laptop is worth to get someone to fix it?

Also...
When the laptop monitor isn't working, it is simply black and apparently unpowered.
When the driver is installed and the external isn't working, it has columns of blue dots across it.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 extremely slow wondering if hard drive failure

Hello, I want to start off by saying I'm not a huge computer guru, so that is why I'm coming here first. My Macbook Pro worked very well for a year, and then it has slowed down drastically. I've always been a windows user so mac is kind of foreign to me, but I'm trying to learn.
Some problems I've encountered are 1. Extremely slow running whether internet related, or just an application. I have checked the activity monitor and nothing is hogging up my memory. 2. Spinning wait cursor (rainbow circle) when I try to do ANYTHING. It takes minutes to start computer once it makes it to home screen. The circle just spins for a few minutes. Even just web surfing it's there. 3. Battery drains from 100% to less than 20% in 30 minutes, which again is annoying. 4. When battery drains the fan turns on and seems to drain battery even faster. 5. I get a lot of random errors forcing shut down of programs. I have ignored this problem for two years by not using my laptop or using it very minimally, but I am going to be needing a laptop again for school and not just my iPad and phone so I was planning on taking my macbook to genius bar, but wanted to check here first since Apple is an hour away. Plus I want to be able to use the piece of equipment that I spent a decent chunk of change on. I used time machine to back up everything today. I know its not a space issue as I have 300+ free GB on hard drive. I have tried to read through similar posts, but its overwhelming so I came here to post my own question.
I ran disc utility and there were some errors, which were able to be corrected after a couple tries. Computer still slow though when trying to do anything and running rainbow circle.
In recovery mode I reinstalled OSX
I was finally able to install updates after completing the above that were not able to be installed before.
I ran etre check, this is the report that came up:

Basically I'm wondering if anything sticks out in this report. I was thinking it could be a possible hard drive failure. I know my computer has been dropped on the floor at least a few times. Thoughts are appreciated. Thank you for your patience.

Eab, I feel your pain! I am replying simply to share my similar ongoing experience with my early 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro, running Mavericks with seeming ample hard drive space, [applications requiring less than 100GB, about 200GB data (total drive space of 500GB)] & 4GB RAM. (Disclaimer: I am not a wise or computer-savvy mac guru - simply a fellow traveler who has had a very similar set of problems - apps taking forever to load, rapid battery depletion & super overheated MacBook.  While I am a Genius Bar groupie, getting to the Apple store is, for me, akin to an antarctic polar expedition (i.e. problematic). Having spent endless hours struggling with a similar issue, I offer you a synopsis of my struggle/experience.
    STEPS TO DATE:
1.Installed several memory utility programs (Daisy Disk &  MacCleanse) system
maintenance program to regularly and thoroughly empty application caches (Adobe apps & internet browsers being tremendous hogs), identify and remove language elements and other redundant space hogs, etc.   Result: Small, but real improvement when I forced myself to perform a "scan and delete" session every second major computer run (typically about 6-8 hours in length). However, this did nothing to help the problems regularly detected when I run the Disk Utility which almost invariably demonstrates disk permissions that need to be repaired and, with increasing frequency, has demonstrated actual disk errors that require restarting and walking through a disk repair protocol. I did bring it to the Genius Bar where they kindly reinstalled Mavericks which they could do in about an hour versus the several hours that doing this at home requires.  This did identify that my RAM was, on fact, a limitation on the speed at which I could run certain apps.
    2. My next move was to install an additional 4GB of RAM. I bought the new RAM on eBay for about $90 because, with 3 kids equipped with MacBooks & iPhones, I simply couldn't afford the official Apple RAM. I even installed it myself, with the help of a YouTube video. Result: Giant improvement in speed (starting up or switching apps. If I had realized how simple it turned out to be, I would have done it well over a year ago. Some minor improvement in the overheating problem, but persistent problems with disk permissions continually requiring repair and periodic disk repairs (using Disk Utility) required.
    PLANNED FINAL INTERVENTION:
    3. I am purchasing and installing a solid state drive (ssd) and simply chucking the original hard drive, after considerable discussion with my savvier mac friends. It has become clear to me that, sadly, every hard drive has a finite life affected by a variety of factors. I am, in fact, hard on my equipment - running multiple graphic apps simultaneously, transferring massive GBs of data between my laptop, time capsule and an array of hard drives. I will let you know how it goes, but can share that the decision to get a solid state drive followed many conversations with multiple Mac guru-types (in the hope of saving you similar painful tribulations). The cost varies according to the size of the drive, but $400-$500 would buy a reasonable starting size. I am waiting for Black Friday sales, myself. Amazon (where I will likely purchase the ssd) is already offering a number of pre-Black Friday deals.  While I don't really feel like putting out that amount of cash, I reassure myself that a new drive will almost certainly solve the disk errors (with a solid state one offering more durability) & will help me prolong the life of my MacBook Pro by a couple of years hopefully. It beats buying a new Apple MacBook only three and a half years after investing close to $3k for this one!
I am certain that more experienced forum users could point you to software that could help defragment your drive or may be able to offer other solutions. I've simply had enough of struggling with burning thighs and head-banging behavior triggered by slow performance. I hope this is helpful to you in some small way.  The war is not yet over, but I'm feeling good about the battle plan!

  • Hard drive failure on Pavilion dv6-6000 laptop (LT069AV)

I posted this as a reply on another thread (xxx).   Thought I might get a quicker response starting a new question.
Persistent BSODs and disk errors culminated in a "disk not found" error yesterday on my dv6-6000 laptop PC.  Windows 7 Home, Intel i5 processor, 6GB RAM.  I like the PC overall - nice screen and usually great performance.  I look forward to getting it back online as it serves as my work as well as personal computer.
So, I need to replace my hard drive and reinstall the OS with a an HP recovery disc that I have yet to purchase (I can't find a recovery disk I produced myself after several moves), and then restore using my cloud backup solution.
The HP part number for the SATA hard drive is 621046-001 (this is a 640 GB volume).  I noticed that a replacement for this drive is available at CPU medics for about $90.  Would I be foolish to order a replacement, having just experienced a drive failure with this part?  Should I look to other manufacturers and perhaps go with a 750 GB volume?  Also, do I need to replace with a 7200 rpm drive?  Is there any disadvantage if I went with a 5400 rpm HDD?
    Any suggestions?

You have options when installing Windows 7 to create partitions, you could just select the complete space & install as one partion then once installed use windows disc partition manager to adjust it to you requirements.
Windows 7 can be loaded to a memory stick & the link provided includes a tool to make the bootable memory stick.
Plenty of step by step guides on installing windows can be found on google, it is quite easy but first time is always going be slower due to learning curve, if you like super simple then hp recovery discs could be worth the money dor you.
Link below is guide on installing Windows 7, useful as a rough guide on what involved.

  • Which MacBook Pros are safe to buy used and not recalled for video graphics/display failure (due to overheating)?

I've had some bad luck with MacBook Pros lately. I bought a 2010 model but it was effectively a Total Loss because of a vehicle accident. From searching with Google, people have reported logic board failures. Who knows if mine would've failed, too.
Then I bought an older 2009 MacBook Pro and that eventually failed due to the graphics chip failure. There was a recall on it but the problem occured JUST after the recall period expired. I don't have a microwave solder lying around or a proper setup to fix the problem myself.
Now, I im in the market for a used MacBook Pro, as a gift (I can't afford a new one right now) (with the luck I have, I'm basically done with them but the person wants one).
I've seen some 2011 models priced quite attractively, which caused me to do a quick check and find that the (early) 2011 models also have video graphic failures. I don't get it. I understand paying for the name, but the name also has to have reliability and you don't hear about video graphics failures from some of the more well known PC manufacturers..just saying.
I'd strongly prefer to not purchase any retina models, if at all possible. I want a mechanical SATA HDD and an optical drive. I oppose proprietary components -- as I understand it, the retina models make it nearly impossible to upgrade.
Which used MacBook Pros are safe for purchase? In other words, which ones do not have recalls or are susceptible to video graphics/display failures? I don't want to put the money down for one, only to hear it kicked the bucket and it needs service and is out of warranty.
    Thank you for your time.

I have an early 2011 MBP and have haad zero problems since it was new.

  • Intel HD Graphics Driver Update

I have an HP Pavillion g7 Notebook with Radeon HD 6470M graphics. I was prompted to udate the graphics driver through HP assistant. I have downloaded it 3 times and each time it will not install. When it gets to the install part it gives me a warning that my internet security is shut off and then gives me an installation failure. If I go to the AMD website to get the update it says I have to do it through the manufacturer of my laptop. Anyone know why I cannot install this update?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
You should ignore any Microsoft updates or ANY update (from HP, Microsoft or AMD) for the Intel video in your PC.
The only driver you can install in your notebook is the AMD driver from your notebook's support and driver page, which also installs the Intel video driver.
The problem is happening because these auto updates don't know that you have switchable graphics and it is detecting an older version of the Intel video driver and wants to install a newer version.
The problem is the AMD driver on your PC's support and driver page only supports the older Intel video driver and trying to install it will either not work or will mess up your video.
Nor can you use any driver directly from AMD. None of those have the Intel driver needed for the switchable graphics to work.
So, you can hide the update, ignore the update, whatever setting you need to select to not see or install it.
If you see an HP update specifically for the AMD/Intel switchable graphics in your notebook, you can install that.

  • Second Hard drive failure in one year

I have a mid 2007 imac purchased on February 7th of 2008. 2.4GH, intel etc. I love how my apple product is working when it works. I am off to the apple store in Chicago, an 88 mile trip, for the second time in this first year with a hard drive failure. Each trip costs met from 35-40 dollars in tolls, parking and gas.
I wonder if I can ask for a replacement machine since there is clearly something wrong with this one. I do not have air flow problems as the machine is out in the open and does not seem to run hot. Each time I pull out my old dell to problem solve whats going on with this expensive one year old Mac I get a sick feeling.

    Hi Bonawe!
Saw your post and I understand where you are at. Several months ago, both my PC desktop and laptop's motherboards died so I had to replace both. I was told Apple was best for graphics so I decided to get an iMac and a Dell for the laptop. I have to tell you, I love this iMac. The operating system is so easy and intuitive. If you have experience with computers, you will love how easy it is to begin using. So far, I have found it to be an amazingly stable operating system as well. In 3 months, I've had only one freeze up and I use this computer a lot.
I hate Vista - just don't like the operating system at all. I wanted the flexibility of having the apple and PC since some software I have would not work on the iMac. In retrospect, I would have gotten both laptop and desktop from apple. Seriously.
The support at apple is crazy good. I couldn't get the iMac to connect to the internet when I got home - from my unfamiliarity with this operating system. I actually had support on the phone after 3 rings and was on the internet in minutes. I about fell out of my chair. It's that good.
Like it's been said, people who are having no issues are not going to come to the forum. I come here to learn - the responses from experienced users have taught me so much about how this computer functions and how to prevent problems. So don't use these posts as a decision maker in your process. I've visited Vista forums that have so many more problems.
My daughter became an apple convert as well. She got the Macbook Pro for Christmas and loves it.
Sorry for the long post and hijacking this thread but I really wanted to let you know my experience to help you with your decision.

  • Hard Drive failures on X60 Tablet

I've now had two hard drive failures on my X60  - and wondering if something is wrong with the laptop
Only thing I can think of is that someone knocked it off a stand when I was using it for a presentation  and it fell hard enough to break the battery casing exposing the cells inside - this was the point of impact.
I've replaced the battery but wonder if summat else might have gotten dislodged?
These were Western Digital Black 320GB drives if to know that that makes a difference to your reply  - an upgrade from the original 60GB drive that I still have.
Is there any way I can test it  other than trying another drive - a somewhat expensive process!
    Thanks all

Well, a fall can damage/destroy a hard drive, but my assumption is that you just had bad luck with them...
I've owned several X60/61 tablet and non-tablet units and have encountered no issues whatsoever.
All my machines (apart from T43p) run on Seagate drives...
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,

  • Chronic T400 Hard Drive Failures

Our company has been using Lenovo laptops for five years, depending primarily on the T61/T400/T410 family of laptops.  We first purchased T400s in late 2008, and deployed almost 40 of them between 2008 and 2010.
Beginning this spring, we have had a string of catastophic hard drive failures on T400s purchased in 2009.  In nearly all of these cases, we end up with a HDD Initialization Error (or similar) that render's the drive unrecoverable, particularly because we use PGP to encrypt the drives.  With the PGP encryption, if we cannot access the boot sector of the drive and decrypt the disk, it is impossible to recover any data.
In the past three to five months, I believe that we have had almost ten T400 PCs experience a catastrophic disk failure.
The 2010 cohort of T400s have been more reliable, but perhaps that is because they are younger.  I don't believe that any of our T61 machines experienced a disk failure before their 36 month refresh date.
I have heard from another company in our region that they have experienced similar problems with 2009 T400s.  Has anyone else experienced this, and more importantly, diagnosed the root cause?  Is it heat related, caused by manufacturing defects, or related perhaps to PGP?  Although Lenovo is always prompt with disk replacements, the overhead associated with reimaging and risk of data loss is becomming a challenge for us to manage.

i think the OP is referring to multiple T400 as T400s, the T400s was not around in late 2008, it was released in the end of June 2009 if my memory serves me correctly.

  • Imminent hard drive failure message

can i return my laptop to the store for a replacement.. it is less than 5 months old and i am getting an imminent hard drive failure message. totally unacceptable

HP will replace the hard drive under warranty. Not too many stores will permit a return after 5 mos. We can also assist with a hard drive replacement.

  • Data Recovery After Hard Drive Failure!

Ok, basically, I've got a 2 1/2 year old iBook G4 with a bombed hard drive, and unfortunately, the last time I backed up was around 3 months ago. Here's what happened right before the crash: some applications like Widgets and Safari were acting fluky, and it wouldn't let me open Word documents, so I restarted, because I thought it might have something to do with the fact that i had downloaded the new version of itunes not that long ago and hadn't restarted since. well, when i restarted, the gray screen with the wheel and the apple symbol went on for a really long time, and then the blue screen came up with the cursor, but nothing else happened, and the blue screen just stayed there. as far as i know, the hard drive wasn't making any unusual noises, just the usual occasional soft sounds that my hard drive has always made (there are usual sounds, right?) a piece of information that might be useful is that the hard drive was almost full (it only had about 5 GB left, which i understand is how much you should leave) could this have caused the failure maybe? anyway, i tried using the hard drive as a target and tried getting another computer to recognize it and pull the files off, but that didn't work. so, i brought it into the apple store, and they got it to boot up but using some external hard drive, i think. they tried disk utility, but that didn't see my hard drive. then the tried disk warrior, and that saw it and repaired it or something, but then it couldn't get the drive to mount. so, i'm assuming that because disk warrior didn't work and couldn't get it to mount, then other software like data rescue, etc... won't either. like all computer users, i've got some REALLY REALLY important data on there, and all the data recovery places i've gotten quotes from are pretty pricey. if the drive doesn't require physical data recovery, only non-physical, as i hope, the cheapest is still $350. even so, the person on the phone there didn't seem to know nearly as much as the people at the more pricier places. so, are there any other options besides expensive data recovery? i read something about using dd - a unix thing, but i don't know the first thing about it (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) so i'm not sure i want to risk messing it up even more. and, if worse comes to worst, then i'll use a data recovery place... but can anyone tell me if they've used any of the data recovery companies below, and which ones are good?
(first three do evaluation for free, and then you decide if you want to continue based on more accurate price idea)
    MacintoshDataRecovery.com
    $500 non physical
    $1100-1600 physical
    Heroic Efforts
    http://www.heroicdata.com/data_recovery
    $350 non physical
ships to another (very expensive) place if physical
    ACS Data Recovery
    http://www.acsdata.com/index.htm
    $600-700 non physical
    DriveSavers.com
(recommended by Apple, probably the best, but the most steep, too)
could cost anywhere from $500-$2700 and $200 evaluation fee even if data is unrecoverable
Since this is our fourth hard drive failure in four different iBooks in 2 1/2 years, i am starting to become seriously disillusioned about the quality of the hardware Apple uses...not that i would ever get a dell or anything, but still....
THANK YOU in advance for any tips you might be able to offer, and also for reading this extremely long post!

I have read good reports concerning Data Rescue although I have not used it myself.
Once you get your data back, focus on a regular (even daily) backup routine, because as you know only so well, the question is not if a drive will fail, it's when.
    My condolences, by the way.

  • Reset NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics driver

How can I reset my NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics driver in my MBP 2.2 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, Mac OS X 10.7.2?  When I start it up, white screen appears OK, but when the login window should appear, the screen goes black, and I need to connect my external monitor (Apple Cinema Display 23-inch DVI) to see the image.  When I finally log in, and I go to the System Preferences panel and try to detect my MBP display, it seems that it does not exist.
I have tried everything: resetting PRAM, fixing permissions, etc, but nothing happens. I even formatted the HD, and tried to reinstall OS X Lion, and in this case, both monitors work as mirrors (weird, eh?).  As it did not work, I tried to install the original OSX that the installation disks have, but starting the installation process from the disk did not work, because the video is scrambled (weirder!). So it is not a hardware problem, and I think the NVIDIA drivers are corrupt, but I don't know how to fix this problem.  Can anybody help?  Thanks in advance

    Hi
Are you getting the MacBook Pro repaired ?

  • Possible Imminent Hard Drive Failure?

First off I have an Early 2011 MacBook Pro running OSX Mountain Lion.  Avast version 7.0 is running as my anti-virus software with current definitions.  I'm a network administration student so I run 2 or 3 virtual machines simultaneously to replicate a domain environment for learning.  With that I decided I need space for all these operating systems plus my music and pics, so 10 Days ago I purchased a new Seagate 750GB HD Microcenter and upgraded to 8GB from 4GB of ram while I had the case open.  HD has worked like a champ and the computer has been faster for days until last night.  I was on Facebook and suddenly I got the spinning beach ball of death.  Giving it the mac 3 the mac version of the three-finger salute didn't help me so I went for the hard restart.  After that I got the blank grey screen.  I restarted with the option key and all I saw was my Windows Partition, but when I tried to boot to it I got a kernel panic.  So I went and got the OSX Mountain Lion thumb drive I made (didn't expect to be needing that so soon) and used disk utility. Disk Utility could not verify the disk and told me to format the disk and reinstall OSX.  Knowing that I have everything recently backed up with time machine and Winclone I went ahead and formatted and restored my time machine backup along with my Winclone backup.  (My attitude was, what were my options)
During the restoration process of OSX I had zero problems, while doing the restoration of my Windows partition with Winclone I was watching the console log and saw this.....

I'm not a beginner Mac user but I'm not an all-knowing genius of the Mac either, but I know the GUID has something to do with the file structure of the hard drive.... Either way after I performed the restoration everything seems to be back to normal. The same fast computer I had before with no glitches and disk utility has even verified my disk on several occasions now and hasn't reported any issues.
So here is my ultimate question?  What would cause this random failure in the first place if not the HD?  Is the forum's consensus that I should take the HD back anyways even though all checks are passing currently?  And, if not the HD how can I prevent this from happening again?  Let's face it, I'm a college student, I need my computer.  Luckily it died when I was going to bed and I could let it restore overnight.  Also, It's lucky for me that I didn't have class this morning and have no assignments pending that are immediately due so I can complete the windows restoration in the morning.
I'll be looking forward to everyone's insight.

    Thanks for the info.
I just bought Techtool Pro last week when I my hard drive directories got chewed up the first time. The box has a "Tiger Compatible" sticker on it so I imagine it's at least v4.0.4 on the CD. (Although I will check now)
However, I think now the problem has progressed. Now the hard drive goes into a 1-2 minute cycling routine a couple times per day even if the computer is idle. Out of nowhere it starts up and it makes this repetitious reading/writing sound. It lasts 1-2 minutes and during this time the computer is hung-up (round-rainbow animated icon) and can't do anything, just have to wait it out.
At this point I'm thinking of calling it quits and I'm just going to take the machine in while there is still a warranty on it as I'm really starting to believe it's drive failure and not a problem with software.

  • Hard drive failure message, and Short DST fail

    Hello, and thanks
alright, this is the first time i have had this issue.
only thing on the computer that was changed recently was a windows update yesterday, it came up automatically, shut the computer down, and restarted automatically. Java has wanted to update for a couple days
if its worth anything, the error came up when i was watching instant streaming on netflix.
half a year old (maybe) Pavilion dm1
    windows 7 64 bit
    AMD E-350 precessor
    product ID 00359-OEM-8992687-00010
gave me a warning message that hard disk drive failure was eminant, and adviced me to back up everything. computer seems to be functioning normal other than the error/warning message.
when i restarted the computer and ran the test that comes up i ended up with this, it says it may take over an hour, but this comes up after about a minute.
    testing drive : 1
    SMART Check: Passed
    Short DST: Failed
    Failure ID: 9LNF2M-5K55RT-MFH14J-60WA03
    Product ID: XY961UA#ABA
    Hard Disk 1
not sure where to go from here with it.
only other thing i have had happen with it is video driver crashes when i have a stale youtube video left in a tab. i assume that is unrelated, and i just trained myself to avoid that.
    thanks! i appreciate the help.

    Hello Frederic45.
You need to replace your hard drive.  You should be able to purchase the parts on the notebook's HP Parts Surfer Page.
Had you previously created any Recovery Media such as a thumbdrive?  Without this you'll be unable to reinstall the operating system when you replace your hard drive.  You'll need to contact HP Support in order to get one of these kits.  The number for US/Canadian customers is 1-800-474-6836.  If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.

  • Having hard drive failure every year

Trying to find out why the hard drives on our computer HP TouchSmart 310-1124F keeps failing.  Purchased this computer new in 2011, in February of 2012 the hard drive failed, message was "Hard desk failure is imminent have it replaced" so I did.  Now in 2013 I'm getting another message " we strongly recommend that you back up your computer to avoid potential data loss ... contact your computer manufacturer to determine if the disk with errors needs to be repaired or replaced."  The computer is attached to a good battery backup, it's not used for extended Internet work, No new programs have been downloaded, it is not used to download or upload information and although it's not our main computer it is used daily.  What is going on, is anyone having same issues.  I feel the computer itself is a lemon.  This will be the 3rd hard drive in 2 years on this machine!  By- the- way I did contact the Tech. department telling them the error message but was only told this computer was "not in warranty now" and that ... "you'll need to purchase a new hard drive"  No offer or indication as to a possible repair could be done. Yeah that dosen't make me feel that great about this product.  I just want to find out why the hard drives installed on this machine only last one (1) year! Any advise would be appreciated, thank you.

    WRI-Jupiter,
Your computer may not / most likely doesn't have anything to do with the hard drive failures you have experienced. Drive manufacturers have been reducing the warranty period on drives for years. Also, as drive density has gone up, it appears that quality control has gone down.
Was the first drive replaced under warranty by HP or did you do it yourself??? Have you kept the computer free of "dust bunnies"??? What is the average temperature where you live???
By the way, the "we strongly recommend that you back up your computer to avoid potential data loss ... contact your computer manufacturer to determine if the disk with errors needs to be repaired or replaced" message was primarily just for your information. Because the warranty has expired, HP will no longer repair the machine without you incurring additional costs.
    Your best bet is to;
    1)  Follow the advice of the message above and back-up any and all data you wish to save before the computer encounters a major hard drive issue.
    2)  Run the hard drive diagnostics from the boot menu or DOWNLOAD and run the HP Vision Hardware Diagnostics CD Image.
    3)  Also consider downloading and running the hard drive manufacturuer's diagnostics routine and see if it generates an error code. If the drive is still under warranty and you receive an error code, contact the manufacturer for an RMA.
    4)  When replacing the drive make sure to blow all the dust out of the computer and continue this practice about every three months.
    Please send KUDOs
