T61 recover from xp to vista

The original os of my T61 is vista. I installed xp and kept the recovery partition. Now I want to recover to the original vista but cannot find the option when I press ThinkVantage at startup! The recovery partition is there but just cannot be used. What should I do? Thank you.

There're 2 solutions.
1. If one of your friends owns the same model and has created a set of recovery DVDs, borrow the DVDs and you can restore your machine to the out-of-box status.
2. Borrow a standard Vista installation DVD (any version works) and install. Skip the serial No. during the installation and enter the one belonging to your machine after the installation. You'll have a clean Vista this way.
Good luck!

  • Recovering from a network drive

    Hey all
I've been successfully using Time machine on a network drive (using "defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1"
in a console). Unfortunately, my HDD broke and apple support had to install a new one.
Now, how do I restore from that network drive again? I have a freshly installed and fully updated Leopard already and would like to just restore the users' settings. But, the network drive isn't visible in the migration assistant.
I even tried to copy the network drive's content to a firewire disc... still nothin visible.
    What else can I do?
    Thanks a million!!!
    Bernhard

Yes, I can mount the image and thus have access to all revisions stored by time machine. Maybe I could use rsync to get the data back in place? My hope was to make time machine recognize the image on the (now) local drive and recover from there... is that possible?
I know that it's unsupported to use time machine on a nas, but - for me - running time machine on a local hdd just doesn't make much sense (I want multiple computers to do their backup to the same drive and I also want to separate the backup drive from the original drives physically). I also don't see why this should be so difficult to implement (Vista can do it btw... :-)), unless, of course, Apple wants to sell its time capsules...
Anyway, I didn't want to complain, I would just like to get my data back.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Urgent solution to this problem "Attempt to reset display driver and recover from timeout failed"

    Hi wonderful people at HP,
I would be glad if you can solve this problem in my system. I want this to be urgent enough because I am graduating by March 1st 2011 and I want many things to be completed on my system.
I have previously purchased warranty with hp for three times for tune out service, software and hardware help but nothing has been materialized, I am sorry to say but I just lost my money.
My system, from the time of purchase, had the same persistent problem of overheating and also heavy noise, I told this to several people of HP but they never seem to respond properly. In fact my friend had a similiar problem in DELL and they responded promptly and sent him a new computer system. I don't know what to do. It will be ok if my system can function for one more month. I WOULD BE GRATEFUL TO YOU IF YOU CAN SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

    Re your 116 BSOD...
"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the Blue Screen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".
Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OS's like XP to crash.
As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.
If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.
If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.
Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.
Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.
If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.
I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

Advice offered in good faith. It is your decision to implement same.

  • UpGrading from XP to Vista

    Hi there.
Im thinking of upgrading my T61 from XP to vista.
I know I can just format my c: drive then install Vista just like desktops.
However, i m aware of that there is a hidden drive with operating system image and other important staff in it. If i format my disk, i will probaly lose the data in the hidden drive. That's cruel and not what i want.
    The question is this:
Is there anyway to upgrade both my OS and the hidden drive to support Vista together ?
For example, i want to be able to use the blue ThinkVantage buttun to recovery my system with Vista, just like what i can do with recoverying my XP now.
Also, I have my own Vista Business, is it possible to install my own Vista without paying for a new one ??
    A lot thanks...

First, make the XP recovery discs just in case you ever need to go back.
Second, The easieast way to have a Vista recovery partition is to use the fectory Recovery discs. I think you can do your own Vista install, Install Rescue and Recovery along with the other drivers found here. Then Rescue and Recovery will make a recovery image for you.
If your Thinkpad has a Seagate Hard Drive you can use Disk Wizard to make your own recovery discs. With the full version of Acronis you can make an "Acronis Secure Zone" which is a hidden partition you access with F11 at startup. It allows you to restore the computer from there.

  • Moving library from XP to vista

Hey guys i just purchased my new laptop with vista on it. I moved all the music from my music folder on xp into my music folder in vista. i also moved my itunes folder including my library and stuff. When i imported my old library into the newly installed itunes on my laptop, it recovered everything including all my songs, ratings, and playlists. The only thing is though, that it marked every song as "not found". so i basically have to put all the songs in and then delete all the duplicates? or is there another way to import the library from xp to vista?
    Thanks so much

Quit iTunes on teh Vista machine.
    Copy the entire
    \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ folder from XP
    to
    \Music\ on Vista.
Start iTunes. Everything should be there and work fine.

  • T61 Upgrade From Windows XP to Windows 7

    Hi guys,
My T61, 7664-A12 in 2 months will have its warranty expired. After it expires I want to want to upgrade the battery to a 9 cell ( the 6 cell default is dead already) a 42T4511. upgrade its current 2 GB memory to a 4 GB. And also upgrade it to Windows 7. BTW, I opted for the downgrade previously when I bought this machine and bought the recovery discs for windows xp, as the OS that came with it is Windows Vista 32 Business ed. Anyway, I have been reading about the upgrade in several forums but unfotunately, most of what I read was that were upgrade done during windows 7 beta phase and obviously, it had lots of problem with its drivers. Now that windows 7 is mature enough (I guess) are the drivers updated already? will everything be updated with the system update? or I shouldnt use the system update, or should I not update at all. Most of what I read was about the drivers of fingerprint reader, bluetooth, and intel turbo memory. among other trouble, these three seems to be prevalent. Nonetheless they were able to use the said peripherals using work arounds or installing via compatibility mode to Vista. most of these were done some time late 2009 and early 2010, so im guessing that by now, everything is working out just fine.
If any of you guys have upgraded your T61, using the final release of windows 7, please post the steps youve done for a clean install. BTW, I'm want to install the Professional 32 bit version of Windows 7. and if you encountered problems, what are they and what did you do to fix it.
Does Intel turbo memory works now with windows 7? BTW, I am not sure if I have this device or its capacity either since I couldnt see the device in device manager, it could be that i have updated the system using system update and that the exclamation mark for the device have been disabled by the update from lenovo.
Please help and thanks in advance
    Solved!

    Hello,
At work, I use a T61 (machine type unknown) .  It has been upgraded to 4GB of RAM and runs Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition x64.  When I received the computer, it had 3GB of RAM and was running Microsoft Windows Vista x86 (I do not recall which edition). Here are the steps I took to upgrade it:
Removed 1GB RAM and replaced with 2GB RAM for a total of 4GB of RAM
Removed the old hard disk drive and replaced it with a new hard disk drive.
Booted machine from Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition x64 installation disc in the DVD±RW disc drive and installed the operating system using default settings.
Installed the latest version of the ThinkVantage System Update program from a USB flash drive, which downloaded the latest device drivers and ThinkVantage software from Lenovo onto the T61.
Ran Microsoft Windows Update to download all of the operating system updates, patches and hot fixes from Microsoft.
Installed remaining software (various third-party application and utility programs, employer's proprietary software and so forth)
Restored all of my data from its backup to the new hard disk drive.
It took me about half a day to accomplish all of this.
The T61 has an Intel Turbo Memory Module in it, and it is recognized by the operating system.  However, between the 4GB of RAM and the fast hard disk drive I installed, it is hard to tell how much of a difference it makes, performance-wise.
I have never tried doing an upgrade from Microsoft Windows Vista to Microsoft Windows 7, so I cannot say how well that works, but the clean installation of Microsoft Windows 7 together with Lenovo's ThinkVantage System Update program worked just fine and the ThinkPad T61 was immediately usable, afterwards.  I did not have to change any settings or hunt down any device drivers on web sites.

  • Cannot Delete CPTL file from Desktop using Vista

    Hi All,
I cannot Delete CPTL file from Desktop using Vista. Explorer
crashes. It is a Captivate 2 file.
I have tried (with no luck):
    - logging in as a different user and deleting the file.
    - running explorer as an Administrator
    - uninstalling Captivate.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Raef

    Hi Raef,
That is a strange issue. Here are a couple more ideas you
    could try:
    - Have you tried renaming the file (including suffix)?
    - Have you rebooted?
    - Do you get any error messages when trying to delete, such
    as "Acess Denied"?
    - Is your machine networked? Is it possible someone else has
    the file open?
    - Can the file be moved to another location or put in a
    folder (and then deleted)?
    - Have you tried using the Command Prompt / DOS mode to
    delete the file?
It sounds like it could be a Vista issue so I would look at
the Microsoft Vista forums too. Sorry I do not have an exact
    answer.
    IHTH,
    Aaron

  • Can't recover from sleep sometimes: "Oh no! Something has gone wrong!"

I'm running gdm + gnome-shell (force fallback mode) on a Thinkpad W520 with intel integrated graphics only (via bios setting, so no optimus). Once a week or so, my Laptop fails to go to sleep properly and to recover from it.
It basically works like this, normally when I close the lid, the sleep LED blinks a couple of times, and then stays on (and you can hear the fan turn off). When sending the laptop to sleep fails, the led blinks indefinitely (like, all night, if you let it), the fan keeps running as well.
Once you open the lid again, you are greeted with the message "ACPI: Unable to dock!" on a black screen. This happens when successfully recovering from sleep mode as well, though.
Shortly afterwards, instead of seeing a password prompt, you see this:

I tried to search the problem but couldn't find anything that was quite like my problem. I did however find someone saying the ~/.xsession-errors file could contain clues. So here is that:

If I copy the Itunes folder from my old pc onto my new one in the music folder will I be able to sync just as if it were the old one? This is from a Widows Vista machine to Windows 7.

I suspect design rather than a bug, it's too useful. The behaviour seems to have been consistent for quite a long time on both Windows and Mac machines...
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above right, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library will be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another, or even between Windows & Mac computers, without breaking the links between the library and the media, and being self-contained is much easier to backup (You do backup, don't you?). Anything that isn't stored inside the media folder must stay put or be restored to precisely the same path on a new machine or iTunes won't know where to find it. Within the media folder the relative paths from the library to the media remain unchanged and iTunes can cope even when the absolute paths are updated.
Should your library not be in the usual layout I've written some general posts on how to make a split library portable or I can give specific instructions on request.

I SUCCEEDED IN TRANSFERING ALL MY BOOKMARKS TO GOOGLE CHROME. THIS WILL ALLOW ME ACCESS TO WEBSITES WHILE I WAIT FOR A METHOD TO REPAIR MY FIREFOX PROGRAM. IN A PREVIOUS MESSAGE, I EXPLAINED THAT I WAS UNABLE TO ACCESS ANY WEBSITE USING FIREFOX AFTER COMCAST, MY ISP, RECOVERED FROM AN OUTAGE THAT LASTED 5 HOURS. WHENEVER I TRIED TO CONNECT TO A SITE, A POP-UP MESSAGE APPEARED INDICATING: "UNABLE TO INITIALIZE THE APPLICATION'S SECURITY COMPONENT. THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE IS PROBLEMS WITH FILES IN YOUR APPLICATION'S PROFILE DIRECTORY. CHECK THAT THIS DIRECTORY HAS NO READ/WRITE RESTRICTIONS." I EVEN REMOVED FIREFOX FROM MY COMPUTER AND DOWNLOADED IT AGAIN, FIGURING THAT BY NOT MERELY USING AN UPGRADE, I WOULD BE INSTALLING A COMPLETELY FRESH DOWNLOAD. UNFORTUNATELY, I RECEIVED THE SAME DISAPPOINTING RESULT, WITH THE SAME POP-UP MESSAGE RE-APPEARING. HOWEVER USING BOTH GOOGLE CHROME AND INTERNET EXPLORER, I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT TO WEBSITES. SO I HAVE TO CONCLUDE THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH MY INTERNET CONNECTION.

  • Upgrading from XP to Vista with no recovery drive.

    Hello,
I plan to upgrade from XP to Vista. I have the whole 160 GB disk allocated to XP as a C drive. I have no problems in formatting it while changing to Vista.
The problem is that Lenovo gave no Vista DVD when I bought the laptop. Everything was given in the recovery partition which I formatted when I downgraded to XP. So how should I change back to Vista ?
Also I was browsing through the Lenovo Drivers website becoz I need Vista drivers once I install Vista onto the laptop. There are different versions of drivers available for my laptop's type-model, so how should I know that which one works best or which one was given in the factory installation from lenovo?

The simplest answer is to purchase the recovery cd if you were shipped with vista. The tech center can help with your purchase but they can order only what was originally shipped on the laptop. The cost is $45.00 plus s&h and local taxes.
