  • T61 screen brightness

    Hey all,
I was playing around on the T61 on my campus book store today as I am interested in purchasing one. The bookstore has the 14inch widescreen model with the WXGA+ screen. Is it just me or is this display horribly dark? This notebook was next to a macbook, and when comparing the two it almost seems as if the thinkpad's backlight is broken or something. Do all you T61 owners out there find that the screen is really badly lit?
I cant see anyone using a laptop like this... I feel lucky that I didnt purhcase the laptop without seeing one in real life - how can Lenovo sell such a laptop? (Just so youll know, I did try to increase the brightness using the function key and the brightness-up key, but it was at the max)
Just incase there was something wrong with the notebook on display, do any of you out there find that it is really dim?
    Thanks
    Ushir

Hey all and thanks so much for all your replies.
Okay, so I think perhaps my wording was poor here. I think instead of brightness, I should have maybe said colour reproduction. I went back to the bookstore today and played on the T61 there and tried my best to play with the Nvidia display settings - but I just couldnt get a very good setting. I find the colours on the screen to be very washed out and the screen is a bit dim. I couldnt help feel that compared to the macbook pro, this screen was awful. Im having a tough time here because other than the screen, I really like the laptop alot. Its the perfect size, the keyboard is awesome, its got a decent graphics card and the resolution is also pretty sweet. But then I look at the macbook pro and I see the wonderful screen, the camera, the awesome gfx card (256mb nvidia 8600 gt) - not to mention that the MBP has a 2.4ghz processor whilst the T61 being sold at the bookstore has a 2.0 ghz processor.
So heres what I like about each:
    Macbook Pro:
    Pros:
    Better Processor - 2.4ghz
    Better Screen - 300 nits
    Weight is slightly lighter (5.4lbs)
Awesome Graphics Card - nvidia 8600GT
2 Operating Systems (OSX and Vista)
    Cons:
A little larger than I would like
Dont like the keyboard and mouse (no right click)
    Thinkpad T61
    Pros:
    Awesome keyboard
    Perfect Size
    Runs nice and cool
    Rollcage
    Hard drive bump detection
    Cons:
    Crappy display - 220 nits
    Crappy processor - 2 ghz
Mediocre gfx card - NVS 140M
    No camera
So at the moment, Im leaning slightly toward the MBP. Can someone post some pictures of their WXGA+? Im interested to see if the showroom model is farked... Because frankly, the screen is the deal breaker...

  • Help - Screen brightness is very low

    Hello all,
I am having problems with my touchsmart.  The screen brightness is very low and I can't see anything unless I have a flashlight.  The brightness is already at 100%.  A couple of things I noticed.  When my computer is in sleep mode and I move my mouse to get out of it, the screen will appear normally for a few seconds.  When I changed the screen resolution to 800x600 and click apply, the screen brightness will go back to normal for a few seconds and when I revert it back to 1600x900, it will go to normal again for a few seconds.  Here are my specs:
    HP Touchsmart 300-1025
Processor:  AMD Athlon II X2 240e Processor 2.80 GHz
    System:  Windows 7 64-bit
    THanks for any help.
    Tim

    Hello tim1218:
Lets get you started with calibrating your display. Go to Help and Support click on it. Opens type in brightness will take you to: Adjust your monitors brightness and justment.  In secound sentance  at the end of it click after word (see) Click on Calibrate you display Next window will give direction follow them. If you are unable to get it resolved by running calibrations . Then I recommend that you take your computer in for service. I wrote this bold and large type for you to be able to read it on dark screen.

  • Satellite A100 (PSAA9): Win7 + screen brightness adjustment issue

    Hi
I have installed Windows 7 64-bit on my toshiba A100 (psaa9) machine, and i cannot modify screen brightness anymore.
It is maximum brightness always. Fn key does not work, and neigther i can modify the brightness manually through nvidia control panel. nvidia driver is 7.15.11.7967, installed automatically with windows.
    In a similar thread http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=182780
i've read suggestions about Value Added Package to be installed, but there is no package like this for my model.
how can i fix my problem?
    thanks

    hi all,
    thank you for reply!!!
ok, i tried to install VAP and Flash Card Utility for Satellite L500. first, installing Flash Card Utility i got invalid serial number error. i've read in forum that it might be due to inappropriate driver for my version on laptop or if i did not install VAP first. so, second, i tried to installed VAP, but i get value "Setup tvap error 0x8146045B" :(
according my display driver: it was nVidia driver automatically installed with win7. in fact there is no display driver for win7 64bit version on toshiba website... i guess i have more problems with display, as my secondary display blinks every time some system event like driver/program installation or usb device plugging-in or -out happens.

Also whenever I change my volume using the fn+F7/fn+F8/fn+F9 keys, the little on-screen display doesn't pop-up any more. I would like to fix this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 - Screen Brightness Problem

I  have two Nokia Lumia 1520.
Both of them have the same problem. I will explain the problem to you in detail and before that let me assure you I am a Windows Phone long time user , have been part of the development , developed several apps for the platform and I have used Lumia 800 , 720 , 920 , 925 and now 1520. So I am well aware of all the settings , sunlight readability , automatic brightness etc. This problem is not due to any of these , I can assure you
    Now the problem ,
I set the automatic brightness option OFF
I move the brightness to HIGH
    Then I lock the phone
When I unlock the phone , the brightness drops by 10% suddenly without any intervention
This problem happens sometime. Some days I see this problem , some days I don't and there are few days where I see this problem very heavily.
I purchased another 1520 and it has the same problem. I am very sure , from my experience that this is a firm ware issue. This is NOT a hardware problem , but a serious problem from your software end. It is prudent that Nokia recognizes this problem and finds a solution to this. Interestingly , I am not the only one who is facing this problem , the whole globe is facing the same problem and for such a pricey phone , this is a frustrating experience - very frustrating. I am sending some links , which will show the problems users are facing:

The phone is rock solid and amazing except this irritating problem.
I have only few days within which I can request a exchange from the merchant. So if any Nokia official can confirm that a software fix is on the way , it would be super helpful
    Nokia , please help !
Moderator's note: We have removed the IMEI numbers. Posting of personal information is not allowed in this forum for security purposes.

I have Nokia Lumia 1520 Black.
I have also been facing the same problem with screen brightness.
The problem occurs only when the Brightness is in Automatic mode.
--> When the Brightness is set to Automatic mode & take out from dark location to bright location the display turns out to weird grey color.
--> And then if the brightness is set to low, medium or high display comes to normal.
Is this issue related to the hardware or software.
If it is related to the Software will you be able to fix it ? or else How about the replacing with the new one ?
    Awaiting for the response.

  • T400 screen brightness standby issue

When my T400 comes out of standby the screen brightness goes to 100% even though the Power Scheme prior to standby was lower than 100%.  This causes me to have to manually adjust the screen brightness.  Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening? I have the ATI video adapter and I am making power setting changes via the Power Manager.

Is everyone running XP with this issue?  I had the same problem when I got my brand new T400 and after 5 calls to tech support for this and quite a few other nuisance problems they gave me an RMA to send the thing back after I reloaded with an XP set they had sent me thinking I had received a bad copy of XP.  Day before I was going to send it back I went to reload it again to get my info I had loaded off.  Well for whatever reason I chose to load it with the Vista recovery discs instead and it took care of all of the nuisance problems!!  I have no idea why but its not an issue now, all I can figure is whatever software is not checking the brightness when it comes back from standby doesn't properly run with XP as with my few other nuisance issues.  I'm loading 7 this weekend, will update to let everyone know how it works.
(Other issues included the LAN/Bluetooh icons in the task bar next to the clock-even after telling them to "go away" in the properties they failed to do so.  Sometimes the screen wouldn't even come back on after coming out of standby so I'd have to blindly shut it down and reboot.  Wireless connection was sporatic and fingerprint softwarewas finicky in not letting me load fingerprints(that one was a driver update issue though)-Like I said, Vista took care of all of it, not that I'm endorsing Vista because I do bellieve Vista was a total failed attempt at an OS by Microsoft and was released WELL before it was ready and properly tested.  My guess is the software/drivers for all the hardware with issues were developed under vista so it'll work with XP but doesn't like to and will be finicky....)

  • S10-3 Screen Brightness Linux work around

I am running Mint 9 and Ubuntu 10.04 on my S10-3. Very happy with the platform overall, but as many have found their screen brightness keys do not work. My web research indicates that the latest kernels will have a fix, but that probably won't be commonly available until the end of 2010. In the mean time I have implemented the following to get easy control over the brightness. It's not perfect but it gets the job done. Create three launchers on the desktop with one each of the following commands. Select the screen brightness icon and title each launcher as Low, Med , High Low> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=35 Med> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=55 High> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=75 credit to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/538256 http://lgallardo.com/en/2010/08/31/control-del-brillo-de-lenovo-s10-3-video-gma-3150-on-linux/

Maybe this topic is outdated, but probably this info will be useful for S10 linux users: official ubuntu kernel 2.26.35-25+ works good. This means new Ubuntu, Mint 10 and similar forks works good with brightness adjustment with no additional tools or tweaks.

  • ThinkVantage Power Manager - idle time for screen brightness fixed at 1minute (very anoying)

    Dear all,
    Please consider this problem:
I have just recieved my new X301 which I am very pleased with. However the ThinkVantage Power Manager has a very annoying bug. When creating a custom power scheme everything works as it should (as far as I can tell) except for one thing. Whilst in the "Idle timers" section the first drop down box which allows you to select the "lower display brightness" time in the "battery settings" column I find that I can select any of the options provided, i.e. "After 1 minute", "After 2 minutes", ...etc "After 45 minutes" or "Never". HOWEVER, regardless of what option I select the power manager instantly reverts back to "After 1 minute" as soon as I exit (selecting the "apply" button or the "okay" button does not help). This is incredibly anoying as it means I'm constantly harrased by the sreen changing brighness when I don't want it to OR having to set the "Lower to" setting to the same as the active screen brightness which means there are no power saving advantages at all and I get the anoying flash of the brightness bars on the screen every 60 seconds (that's 60 times in a working hour!)
I have done the following to try to resolve the problem:
    1) updated the power manager to the latest verion: 1.54
    2) uninstalled the power manager comletely and then reinstalled it, then applied the updates bit by bit and checking the problem at each stage
    3) completely restored the entire system to factory setup (formatting the SSD and losing all data and settings...)
NONE of these options have worked. Please note that this is a brand new system out of the box... (cost 2800USD...)
Can anyone please confirm whether or not this happens on their system as well? Is it just me or is this a global problem? I've called the Lenovo ThinkVantage call centre in the US but they couldn't help.
    Thanks for your help,
    AMS.

This is clearly a bug in PM 1.54. I get the same thing with my old X40, Win XP, SP3. I've recently installed PM 1.54, and have the same problem. It has nothing to do with scheduled tasks, as (a) I don't have any (and don't run the Task Scheduler service on my machine), and (b) it happens immediately (ie. edits are lost as soon as I try to apply them).
Does anyone know if there is an official place to log bugs for TP software?
[editM also kicks in with the 'idle' timer while I'm working.I like its functions, but PM does seem buggy]

  • PSE 7 Screen Brightness

New to PSE7. I'm getting used to PSE7 and thought I saw an adjustment to screen brightness somewhere. Not image brightness and contrast.
I'm trying to adjust my new LCD HP laptop monitor to be less bright and am having no luck finding a way to do that. Can't find manual adjustment buttons or adjustments from Vista. Want to set temperature and gamma.
The ultimate result I want is better printing since my prints aren't matching my monitor.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Sandra,
    > thought I saw an adjustment to screen brightness somewhere.
You may be thinking of Edit > Preferences > General > User Interface Brightness. This simply adjusts the color scheme of the user interface (from grey to black). It has no effect on how images are displayed.
    > I'm trying to adjust my new LCD HP laptop monitor to be less bright and am having no luck finding a way to do that. Can't find manual adjustment buttons or adjustments from Vista. Want to set temperature and gamma.
Most of the graphics chipsets in laptops (Intel, nVidia, ATI) will come with a utility that let you adjust the brightness and other attributes of the display. For example, the Intel chipset utility lets you adjust the brightness and gamma (but not temperature). Usually these utilities can be accessed via an icon in the System Tray in the lower-right corner of the desktop. The Intel utility can also be accessed by right-clicking the desktop and selecting Graphics Properties; the others are probably similar.
    > The ultimate result I want is better printing since my prints aren't matching my monitor.
Though you can try manual adjustments using the graphics chipset utility, it could be very hard to make a significant improvement. Youd be better off calibrating your display using a device like the Spyder2Express:
    http://www.amazon.com/ColorVision-Spyder2-Express-Win-Mac/dp/B000ES4PYU/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UT F8&s=software&qid=1235362706&sr=8-1
There are other low-priced devices as well.
Note, however, that many laptop displays cant be calibrated very well. If thats the case with yours, then youd have to get an external display (which youd calibrate) for your print-sensitive editing.

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15" screen brightness is dull?

I winder if someone can help me with a issue regarding my machine.
I have recently had my early 2013 Macbook Pro retina replaced with the late 2013 model and found that the screen brightness  at maximum is (or appears) to be somewhat less?
    Can any anyone help?
    Regards

    The low-end 15” rMBP with a 8 GB or RAM and a 256 GB SSD costs $2,000.
    The low-end 15” rMBP with a 8 GB or RAM and a 512 GB SSD costs $2,300.
With 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD it costs $2,500.
    The high-end 15” rMBP with a 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD costs $2,600.
All cost $500 dollars more with a 1 TB SSD.
So the SSD size is not a differentiating factor unless you prefer 256 GB.
If you think you need 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD then you might as well spend the extra $100 for the high-end model.
The high-end model will make a difference on gaming and graphics-oriented applications.
They tend to run other applications at about the same speed.
Both models are rated with 8 hours of battery life.
Benchmarks on PhotoShop comparing memory sizes:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5659174?tstart=30
The speed was about 10% different between 8 GB and 16 GB models.
On other applications your mileage may vary.
    Application benchmarks:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2059215/15-inch-retina-macbook-pro-review-a-tale -of-two-laptops.html
The low-end and high-end performed the about the same on non-graphics oriented applications.
    Graphics oriented benchmarks:
On the Cinebench OpenGL benchmark the high-end was about twice as fast.
On the Unigine Heaven Benchmark benchmark they ran at about the same speed.
On the Unigine Valley Benchmark benchmark the high-end was about 1.5x as fast.

  • F5 and F6 keys (MacBook Pro) do not adjust screen brightness after upgrade to OS X Lion

    Hi All,
since "upgrading" my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard to Lion, the F5 and F6 keys for adjusting the monitor brightness do not work anymore! No matter how I set the settings for the monitor, the keys do not work.
Sometimes, the MacBook now just uses a low brightness and the only way to modify this is to open the system settings and change it there.
Does anyone know how to fix this so that it works properly (like in Snow Leopard) ?
    Thanks,
    Kristian.

The screen brightness adjustment is F1 and F2.
You can also adjust in System Preferences > Displays.
